The Urban Dictionary definition states: Anime (pronounced an-ni-mey), is the reason you are losing an average of 4 hours of sleep every night; seeing your grades drop steadily, and at least losing 5Gs of data on your phone or computer; slowly becoming bankrupt (for some 'weird' reason) and slowly evolving into a hermit crab that only moves occasionally to feed on pocky often forgetting that there is something called 'outside'.

It is also the concept that brought a genre and a community together in an element, formed a bond, uh changed your sentiment on life and took us on individual adventures (despite the fact we never actually you know got up out of our beds to do so); last of all opened up a new world of fanbases to enjoy and/or cringe at but as this Full Metal Alchemist character put it:

"The world isn't perfect. But it's there for us, doing the best it can....That's what makes it so damned beautiful."

I guess someone should start something off here if this thread is going to be a thing now:

What was your first anime? (as in, your first actual anime when you originally got into anime, not early morning anime you might've watched as a kid) Did you enjoy it in the end?

I think the one that got me into anime was Attack on Titan, although I stopped watching after the first season when the story was getting ridiculous. It was also when I learned sub is indeed (at times) better than dub.

Started with Toradora myself. Friend of mine mentioned it to me way back during the days of Skype and I gave it a watch on Crunchyroll. Ended up being one of the better anime I've watched out of all the crap out of I've seen, IMO. I actually have the manga from back when I was super into anime/manga, though it's been forever since I've actually sat down and read it through again.

First anime DVDs I owned and pretty much a bigger gateway than even Dragon Ball Z or Robotech was. Still relatively holds up.

The first anime I was into, discounting the Sailor Moon dub since that was early morning kid anime time for me, was Dirty Pair and Dirty Pair Flash which aired on Friday and Saturday nights on Shotime. I was young and didn't really get it other than "girl cops in cool adventures" but when I re-visited it as an adult I loved it even more as some prime 80s anime vibes.

I remember a series of manga about various Legend of Zelda games. Like a two part about Ocarina and Majora's Mask.

Yeah, there's a couple Nintendo-licensed manga out there. I know Pokemon has the long-running Pokespec manga, probably a few others I'm forgetting.

I think the first actual anime I watched was Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. After that it was Fist of the North Star. Unless we're counting either Avatar: The Last Airbender or The Boondocks, then it's one of those.

I'd more or less count the Boondocks as you'd have been likely old enough to have not just stumble upon it late at night on television. At least I assume so as I never did as a teen watching Adult Swim in the early 2010's.

I don't think Avatar and Boondocks count, IMO. I've always considered anime to be Japanese-made, particularly but not always with the distinct style that we know as anime today (as things like Chinese donghua exist). At best I would say things like Avatar or even RWBY and what not fall into an "anime-inspired" or "anime-influenced" category. I know anime as a term in Japan includes all animation in general, but that's not so much the point or content we're talking here I'd think especially as we're not looking at this from a Japanese perspective.

Honestly, it's kind of a slippery slope. I've just never been one to directly consider non-Japanese animation anime, that's all.

I decided to watch the seasonal anime (thirty plus shows worth) and expected to hate almost everything I watched. But I'm closer to being 50/50 in terms of what was watchable.

The best show thus far (that's not Bungo Stray Dogs) might be a fun 7/10 action show, if it can keep up the same pace as its first episode. "High Card" (Plus, it's not a fucking Isekai. So that's another positive in its favor.)

So people keep telling me SAO is bad after the first or second season, everything after is all downhill. That right?

SAO in general is a bad show.

It isn't worth watching unless you care to watch mainstream stuff.

@Dark Cloud You'll hear contradictory things about the show and its spin-offs. But as someone who watched it, when it first came out. (Before everything had been overanalyzed into oblivion.) I quickly stopped watching around when the little girl was introduced. Because the pacing had already slowed to a crawl at that point. And the plot itself had become so obvious, that I stopped watching before most of the really bad stuff had even happened yet.

And honestly, there's so much better "mainstream appeal" anime that do the exact same thing as SAO. So if you need old or current anime recommendations, I can give you far better options.
