So… I explained it very poorly here, but one of the “rules” in this universe is that there are “tiers” to cybernetics. The more vital an organ you’re replacing, the more of your ‘humanity’ you’re trading away. Most ModDocs view this code as a Hippocratic Oath of sorts where they will try and encourage less drastic mods, but there are some who just don’t really care and will do whatever so long as you pay.

Hmm, wondering how that'd affect my character, since a synthetic or at least modified vital organ is part of her backstory. The idea is that she was born with a potentially life-threatening illness, such as heart disease, and in order to pay for her surgery, a parent resorted to theft/embezzlement and got arrested for it. She ran away from the care system, choosing to disconnect from Geonet and live with other street kids, helping others via illicit means as she was once helped.

What effect would, say, an entire artificial heart have on her? Or it could just be a replacement valve, or something of the sort.

I should also clarify that by actual effect I mean in regards to the person's mental state and not just a social faux paux where others view overly augmented individuals as having given up large chunks of what made them human, but said individuals are still (mostly) the same to what they once were mentally and personality wise.

I have an idea for a kid that used to be experimented on by the Heirs but at some point managed to escape (Maybe someone saved him? Could be Black Maria.) The result is that he has plates and pins all over his back and maybe a quirky cybernetic. He would owe a lot to his benefactor that saved him, either by duty or in the case of Black Maria, perhaps a debt or indentured servitude. I like the idea that he needs a serum or access to certain resources for maintenance because of his condition, tying him in deeper with potentially bad people.

I want his heart to be with the Sk8te kids though, where he has a strong personal conviction around freedom and helping his downtrodden buddies. Despite his intimacy issues and trauma from his past, he ultimately wants the best for his friends even if he has to fall apart to do it.

Does anyone have any ideas for a flavorful Cybernetic for this kind of character?

Without seeing a list of what cybernetics are actually allowed, and knowing what kind of cybernetics actually exist in the setting as a sort of baseline, I at least cannot make a suggestion in that regard.

I’m currently at work right now and don’t have access to my laptop where my notes are. I’m open to most options as of now. To answer the question about cybernetic ethics, the major problem with using cybernetics in this universe is anything dealing with the nervous system. Since all cybernetics need to be connected to the brain in order to work, the brain has to be capable of handling the new implants and have the proper “power output” to control them. Too many cybernetics and the brain would struggle to handle all the new electrical impulses.

Couldn't that be handled either by utilizing a brain computer interface (or at least partially offloaded), or by altering a person's neural structure? Granted, the latter if possible is probably highly illegal, black boxed, and likely a thing only the AI controlling Geonet knows how to do. That and it would render anyone undergoing the procedure completely unrecognizable to who they were before, if they even still think or function like anything remotely human.

I'm going to guess that's what NoCo means by loss of humanity - at a certain point, the brain would have to be altered to handle all those cybernetics.

If that is the case then that makes more sense.

I suppose I should give some more detail on the character idea I've got going. It's basically Adam Smasher if he were less of a strictly sadistic asshole and more of a cold and pragmatic mercenary working publicly for one group (E Street), while secretly serving another (the AI in control of GeoNet) in order to bring about a new age of metal and steel rather than one of flesh and bone. Him having been, possibly, seduced by the AI's idea of becoming the de facto caretaker of the human race, since humans obviously cannot govern themselves given their history and even the current reality brought about Megacity Plan and its elite adherents. To say nothing of the Corporate Wars and whatnot.

On the other hand I could also see the AI thinking it controls humanity already thanks to it being the internet basically, the one thing almost everyone is hooked up to and uses to get info and views, etc. In this scenario my character would be employed more to protect its interests (even if that means assassinating certain Heirs or other key figures) although he would still agree with its ideals I imagine.

I could see this creating friction with every group more or less, pleasantly so in a narrative sense. Especially if you need an antagonist to throw against the other groups.

@AardWolf Happy to have you!

@Havoccultist@LuckyBlackCat And to answer that, Lucky has the right idea. Eventually, mods applied to the brain will ultimately start eroding your humanity. Basically, more “human” traits like emotions, ethics, and morality would be superseded by programming and you run the risk of becoming a slave to your own body.
