Bozo the Bard

Wading through a tightly packed crowd was always a struggle, but Widry was half the size of the people around her. Many of them swarmed her for another performance and a few of them she obliged, dazzling them with a simple trick or a short song, usually something they might have heard before the ban, old drinking songs, or work tunes. When Widry could pry herself free of her next batch of enraptured onlookers, she would scurry as fast as her tiny feet could, slowly making her way toward the King's chambers.

As Widry drew nearer, she noticed fewer people were bothering her, and her ears perked as she found the explanation. The steady beat of drum played in a way she knew well, and more evidently, the shout the dwarf bellowed out, demanding the already commenced revelry begin anew. Widry was happy to oblige and sang out to him with her flute. Guiding her way with a series of swirling orbs of light, the crowd parted for Widry Briefly enough for her to come face to face with a fellow clown. His expression had been sculpted and painted into a permanent frown, juxtaposed with the beaming smile his smaller friend gave him. Quickly she rushed to his side as she continued to play in tune with him. As she finally pulled her lips from her flute to gasp for air, she asked him quickly.

"Grimi need me?" Was all she could mutter before her exaggerated lips were pressed against her mouthpiece again and releasing a beautiful menagerie of rapid-paced notes. She added a comical jig to her display, bouncing about in front of Happy and twirling about. The crowd seemed to always demand her attention, as even after posing the question she never looked over to Rockmar. She was far too entranced in their harmonic performance.

Miss Light

As the others signed Grimi's contract, Miss Light moved over to Grimi himself and offered him her hand. The first time he had presented her with it, Arkerym had leapt from her hip and sliced the contract to ribbons before she could even start reaching for a nail. It turned out that the hexblade wasn't keen on his warlock signing contracts backed by an otherworldly patron that wasn't him. Secrecy needed to be guaranteed however, and so the two patrons struck a bargain between each other that would be symbolically sealed by a handshake between their two warlocks every time Miss Light came to the King's Chamber.

Once the handshake had reaffirmed the agreement, Miss Light watched the latest show to kick off on the stage. Widry, Rockmar, and the rest of the band were playing for the audience. The band played their various instruments as amazingly as they always had. Rockmar played the drums with a skill that only those aware of a drum's full potential knew existed. And Widry played her flute and danced a merry jig for the crowd, stopping only to breathe and speak briefly to Grimi.

Were she capable of doing so, Miss Light would have smiled at the sight.

Normally, she would have joined in. Dancing and tumbling to the music, stopping occasionally to make a minor jest at the expense of an inattentive onlooker. But Miss Light couldn't do that now. None of her usual performances would have the same effect while her cloak concealed her costume. And she couldn't cast off her cloak without revealing Arkerym's presence to the genasi. So instead Miss light simply enjoyed the show and waited for further developments brought on by these two new arrivals.

Chapter 1

The Grim Lodge

The Doctor watches Grimi as he demonstrates, and after the rest of the party do so (or chooses not to do so), she follows suit. After signing the contract in blood accordingly, she mutters, "Fascinating..." before following them to a table where they were to discuss. She looks to the entertainers, Happy and Bozo, both in awe and concern as they performed. It was like she never saw anything like it before!

She snaps out of her thoughts by Iota's words, beckoning her to tell them how they can help.

"Oh! Right! You're right! We don't have much time,"

She cleared her throat and addressed everyone who joins her and Iota,

"Thank you for...hearing me out," she speaks quietly before taking in a deep breath through her nose, and she recounts her tale of troubled woe.

"A few weeks ago, I attended a dig in the Murkmire that unearthed a furrowed, light-green stone. I'll give you all the details, but the bottom line is that it isn't a stone at all—it's the egg of an eldritch horror. Moreover, my research indicates it'll hatch at 7:30 tomorrow morning! When all of the patrons will be in the museum!"

A look of horror crosses her face as she recounts that realization once again. But she steels herself and she looks to the party again, keeping herself as calm as possible.

"Trouble is, no one will listen to me. The university ignored me, and I was caught trying to steal the egg from the museum so I could contain it. Now I've been fired, and I was threatened with arrest for telling a fictitious story if I tried to tell anyone else. The Murkmire Stone display at the museum opens tomorrow, and the egg is about to hatch,"

Underneath the cutesy raccoon cowl, cape, and mask, is a look of determination this time.

"You've got to steal the Murkmire Stone and bring it back so I can save the city!"

She then fishes out a piece of paper and places it on the table for everyone to see. "I drew this map for reference. Hopefully this can help. It is based off of the maps given to the public, so it's not quite complete,"

She continues, "I just need you to bring the Murkmire Stone to me, and then I can neutralize it. It can only be neutralized by encasing it in a specially prepared crystal container. I created one for this purpose, but it still has some cracks I need to seal. I can handle that while you get the stone,"

She brings up, "There is a chance to case the museum if you need it. The curator is hosting a private gala at midnight tonight for the....wealthier donors to see the Murkmire Stone before the rest of the city. I do have tickets to help you enter, but you will need formal wear,"

'Happy' couldn't help but watch Widry as she danced and played the flute. His drum beats matched her movements. He watched her hips as they swayed in time to the music. ~Haflings aren't too different than dwarves. Are they?~ He doubted he could keep up with her energy and constant happiness and cheerfulness. But he liked to watch her move and dance. He chuckled to himself as he watched her dance. He thoughts he had...

When Widry asked if Grimi needed her, Rockmar just shrugged. "I dunno. Should we ask?" He took his drum sticks and stood up. The other musicians were still playing. Rockmar headed over towards the table where the Doctor and everybody were sitting. He wanted to see what was going on. Steal some stone? Yeah, they could do that. Easy. Rockmar was in.

Iota

In the thrombus of a university where ancient and modern worlds coagulate, the water genasi, her cognizance a symphony of the ocean's chuchotement and its wavy undulating endearment, coasted, with an Ungoliant hunger, through the blueprint of the once esteemed archaeologist. Cloaked in the future guises of aficionados of bygone stories, her true intent, as fluid and enigmatic as her aquatic lineage, authenticated solely by an uncensored, but resurrected author. The midnight gala, a likely tapestry of glittering soirees and historical revelries, loomed near, its secrets cradled in the velvet shroud of eventide. If they were to masquerade as Lufthansan guests intoxicated with the heady perfume of relics and the libations of reverie, their Ptolemaic conversations would have to weave through the crowds, akin to expertly thrown silk of an Anansi, a dance of Kunsthal espionage set to the tune of clinking glasses and hushed admiration.

Jesters adorned with the shadowy luster of societal gems, cosmetic visages glinting with the maquillage of a spelunker's fervor.

Her sapphire eyes, reflecting the depth of Mariana's trench and the clarity of a sunlit lagoon, perused the map with the meticulous care of an Ortelius charting unexplored territories. Within her mind, a maelstrom of strategies and subterfuges swirled, each thought a ripple on the circumscribed moat of her cunning. The Murkmire Stone beckoned her memory palace with its siren song. This gem, ensconced on the second level of its sanctum, resided in an abode of liminality, just beyond the mundane refuge of restrooms, beneath an attic's forgotten spoils, and hoisted above the cerebral landscape of administrative toil.

Summoning the arcane gifts of her phylogeny, the Marid-brood magically transformed the guide for all to see, into a hovering hallucinatory topography. This ethereal hologram evolved, unfolding like a Raskolnikov lotus in bloom, with each contortion and correction to the shammy semblance of constellations, revealing the intricate anatomy of a narcissan daffodil. Hallways stretched like sinews of ancient titans, labyrinthine rooms opened like the desperate petals of a Middlemist's Red. Every alcove and avenue stood in phantasmal relief, an architect's dream woven into the fabric of apparitions.

As the sorceress navigated through the latest revision of her spectral cartography, her inquiries were as precise as the jeweler's loupe scrutinizing a diamond's heart.

"Guards and alarms?"

She sought knowledge of the sentinels of this fortress, the guardians garbed in the uniform of modern vigilance. Her inquiries about surveillance, emoted an intellectual paternoster, climbing and deciphering a Sator Square, seeking to unlock the language of impregnability that assuredly haunted these cryptic walls.

"Patrons of interest?"

Her feet began to encircle the warlock's table, slowly, like a trepid naiad snaking through the river of time, her questions lapping gently at the shores of knowledge. She asked the doctor about figures of import, those beings whose presence might shape the destiny of their nocturnal quest. With Argus pupils, she awaited descriptions of benefactors whose wealth rivalled Croesus, and of any scholarly guests whose understanding of the archives were as deep as the Abyssal planes. With the stars about to bear witness, they would need to move through this throng of history's children, hearts beating in unison to the rhythm of adventurous ambition --- for the jewel, born from the womb of excavated dust, awaited them, an unhatched prize shrouded in the shell of an Eldritch horror.
Mechanics: Iota memorizes and matches the names on the contract with the faces in the room as they commit fealty. She then employs multiple instances of Minor Illusion, flickering a myriad of drafts before settling on a version. She then makes her rounds, hoping to gain any insight on parole, security and persons.

Grimi Ekleipein
Location: The Grim Lodge -> The Speak Easy -> Office of Crowns

The first time he had met Miss Light was a trying experience for the old man. He was unsure if he could really trust her. However, he didn’t really trust people… did he? Perhaps he was getting too old, too soft. He could see his comrades from the past in these fun younglings. Perhaps they reminded him of his son who he hadn’t seen in years. Nevertheless, he couldn’t help but hide his smile for them. They would or could live to do great things. He hoped. These thoughts were swirling around in his head as his head rested on the cool table. He could smell the coppery smell accustomed with bloodletting.

His smile waned when he thought about Miss Light’s first contract. The one cut to ribbons. The one he braided together and hung on his chair. It was his form of “fatherly” affection for these kids. A reminder of what makes each one special and why he fights for what he believes is right. He could tell when she stepped closer. Could feel her presence. All he did was raise his hand in order to shake hers. That was their contract.

He was listening to the conversation as best as he could. Sometimes his eyes would fail him so he diverted his senses elsewhere. He was never one to just walk into an area without knowing the crowd, escape routes, safety zones, guards and their patrols. It was nice that Iota took the lead in gathering the information. Which for him was a nice reprieve. With his will he summoned his butler and had him work on formal clothing for everyone. Knowing their personalities, likes, dislikes; he had hoped that the costumes would be to their liking.

Unfortunately, masks and makeup would be replaced with hats, fans, and spectacles. There were going to be a few options for each person. However, given the limited timeframe there won’t be many. The almost invisible form moved through the area into the dressing room. It pulled an empty rack and started collecting and gathering the required clothing. Art was another form of entertainment. However, it was something that teetered on the edge of allowance within the kingdom. Mainly because people liked fashion and it was a sign of status as well.

Grimi waited for everyone to finish signing the paper and took it. Once he had it he slid it into a drawer. Were it up to him he would do without all of this. Perhaps again it was a sign of him getting soft in his old age. Perhaps his mind was going and all he wanted was to recall the pleasant memories. With a grin he lifted his head off the table and watched the illusions. Quite fascinating. In another life he would have been a scholarly type. Someone much like his friend in the past. She could do things like this but that is what it was. The past. His features changed as he wanted to know why. Why did he keep going to the past when it had been ages since he last spoke with them?

Grimi didn’t want to interrupt the festivities with one of his old stories. Not again. He grabbed his staff and opened the drawer with the contract. Once he finished that he took it with him and shut the drawer. He moved over to what looked like a bookshelf made for scrolls. The diamond shaped cutouts held many scroll cases and he pulled an empty one from a basket nearby. Opening it was a simple task… for most. Grimi however, had issues with these things. A stream of curses in different languages came pouring from his mouth much like someone trying to expel a night of bad drinking.

Eventually he remembered that they had twisting lids and turned it the correct way. He didn’t even look back as he was so frustrated at this point. Finally he rolled up the parchment and placed it into the scroll case. Once finished he looked for a specific place to allow it to rest. It was his form of trust in his patrons. Then again this room was sealed and had a joint locking mechanism. This was why he had issues unlocking the door sometimes. Because things as mundane as placing a key into a hole or two was hard for him.

His fingers stroked the strings that he took from the lute earlier and he went to another wall. Many strings like this set hung on the wall. Feeling the type of string was the trick. That and he needed to keep them waxed in order to keep them in shape. Which animal did it come from or what type of metal? It really depended on who manufactured it. However, he could always tell if it was different from what he already had in his collection. He found the spot where the strings belonged and placed them with their new family. Heck as far as he knew they were from the same animal. Once finished he moved back to the group and listened to the plan and only then would he try to improve it, if needed.

Arthek Yarnspin

As Arthek listened intently to Doctor's words, his eyes were drifting over each of his companions as he took in their expressions and body language during this exposition dump. Obviously, he couldn't put this scene in his next novel - thanks again, Grimi's eldrich benefactor - but he found it was always important to keep a read on your characters, to know what they were doing and thinking even when the reader wasn't privy to that information. It kept things consistent between scenes.

His eyes lingered on Iota in particular as she effortlessly took charge of the questioning, seeming to have gleaned some of this information already at an earlier point. That didn't surprise him so much. What did surprise him was how no one seemed to object to her presence here, not even Grimi who historically was not one to trust so easily.

However, even as the water genasi was asking all the right questions, there was one thing that was bothering the writer about the Doctor's explanation. "Excuse me," Arthek interjected with a raised hand. "Not to slow down the narrative or anything, but err, one thing is bothering me." He pointed to the doctor. "If this stone is indeed what you claim, how did you come to realise its true nature? And if you could figure it out, how come no one else has?" He paused before quickly adding. "Sorry, just, err, bit of a plot hole that I would like to have, err, filled as soon as possible."

Miss Light

As the others continued to question the Doctor, Miss Light decided to start preparing for this gala. If there was an opportunity to look before they leapt, taking that opportunity would be a prudent move. Miss Light made her way into the backstage changing rooms and over to a wrack of formal clothing. She selected a formal dress from the wrack that she would be able to wear over her clown garb without showing any sign that it was there. Setting the dress down on a nearby table, Miss light then took up her backpack from where she had left it, reached inside, and drew out a set of weaver's tools with reverent care. Miss Light then got to work on the dress, subtlety weakening the stitching that held the dress together so that it could be quickly and dramatically torn away should the situation call for such a thing.

Once her work was done, Miss light cast aside her cloak and removed Arkerym from her person. "I have a feeling that swords aren't on guest list." The half-elf said to the hexblade "And with the genasi still out there, well... you get the gist."

'I understand.'

"I'll return to collect you when it is time for the theft." Miss Light said as she placed Arkerym down on the table and picked up the dress. "With any luck by then the genasi will have left."

'I advise thee not to count on it.'

Deciding to leave figuring out how to work around that for later, Miss Light donned her dress and then left the dressing room to rejoin the rest of the party.

Bozo the Bard

Bozo made a big display of leaving the stage seeing as she had only been up there for mere moments, and to happy it would be clear that leaving the spotlight was painful to her, like ripping a band-aid from a still healing wound. With a final rapid burst of musical rantings from her flute she shone thousands of spinning lights around the room like a fantastical disco before hastily slipping back into the crowd. From there, she followed Happy as the burlier man managed to clear a path to where the real party was going.

The real party seemed rather boring to her when she got there. Scholars and nerds alike, especially Arthek and his sheepish words and general book smarts. There were new faces too, the most interesting being a strange Genasai asking rapid-fire questions. It took halfling a moment to gather what they were gabbing about, but she listened intently knowing that Grimi seldom wasted his time with the pedantic pleasantries that might be found outside of a speakeasy. When she realized this was a heist Widry struggled to contain her excitement, but let the others ask questions. Questions that no doubt would have very important answers. In her mind, the thrill of such an enticing mission was enough, especially if it meant spitting in the face of those who had burned her home down years ago.

[Color=DeepPink]"You hear that, Happy? They need us to steal" She chirped with a giddy tone, bouncing in place as the excitement bubbled over inside her.

"If you need help then you've certainly come to the right place, Madam!" Widry announced as she hopped onto the table the group had been mingling over. Brandishing her flute high and standing with in a dynamic pose the tiny clown was grinning ear to ear.
"It's dangerous, it's exciting, it's filled with tribulations! I am sure this adventure would make for a wonderful song, hahahah!" She said with a spin before lunging forward to put her face close to the distressed researcher's.
"Just let me get this grease paint off and I'll be ready. And where Bozo goes, the giggle gang is never too far behind. Isn't that right gang?"
