There were times when Tianshi wished that he was a more patient man. Perhaps it was for the best that he was not. A more patient man would have never left the temples behind, believing change could come from within the withering Earth Kingdom.

For what patience he lacked, it was clear enough that many of those present found themselves in ever greater scarcity of the precious virtue. Were it so simple that he could explain to the young woman the folly of her ways—that he could explain to them all the folly of their ways—then the war itself might have been halted before it started. But the people of the Earth Kingdom were the stalwart type. Their views were as difficult to uproot as the very ground itself.

Not that there was any lack of trying on that front. The sudden arrival of a gust of air surprised him, for such a feat was only truly possible for one of his kin. Yet all the same, when his dark hues cut across the impromptu battlefield, all he saw was a strangely dressed young man with a fiery hostility in his eyes. That sort of look was as foreign to a nomad as the action that followed, and the towering monk's eyes as he thrust his staff forward to loose a swift blast of air which connected with the intervening bender's strike with an explosive 'crack'.

For one of his people to throw an attack of such force against an unsuspecting opponent was already ridiculous enough. The tirade that followed only baffled Tianshi the more. His mien shifted from severe to incredulous for a time, and a thousand words played at his lips. Who was this young man? Who was he to speak with such disdain for the nomads whilst considering himself a contemporary? The boy could airbend, that much was not in question, and yet how could somebody who so readily spoke with pride at the notion of 'sides' in a conflict consider himself an airbender?

A more damning question to ask, perhaps, was how much good would refuting his points do?

The young woman who had kicked oil into the metaphorical fire certainly cared little for his preaching, and already she was off in search of her fellow 'rebels' in what was looking to become quite a skirmish. Shortsighted as he was prideful, the Earth Kingdom commander seemed to have locked his horns with the notion that both he and the newcomer had no right to oppose their authority. The earth itself seemed to quake beneath Tianshi's feet, as the ground grew into a tomb to encase those who remained. At the same time, it seemed the waterbender whom he had earlier dispatched returned to take up arms with the other airbender; a vexing state of affairs.

"I share allegiance with no aggressor. My 'side' is my own."

A quick puff of air saw the hulking monk take to the air with uncanny grace, his toes just barely gracing the lip of the growing barricade before another carried him further into the air and backward beside. The roof of a nearby shop facing the waterfront made for a convenient perch in the heartbeat it took him to decide his next plan of action: he had intervened in this conflict to try and divert attention away from the fishery. It was inevitable that the Earth Kingdom soldiers would circle back around to pillage through it in search of more 'convicts'.

What is past is left behind.
The future is as yet unreached.

The wisdom of the sutras carried him forward. There was no point in lamenting what was, or agonizing over what will be. Only in doing what could be. If the remaining soldiers were to capture an airbender, then he would see that their duty carried them away from the wharves as a whole. Thick arms braced along the length of his staff, and as the soldiers pivoted to face him, Tianshi leaped once more into the sky, this time cutting through the air in a wide, sweeping stroke. The wind that collected along his precious glider took flight in the way of a long, blunt wave of wind that served to knock all four of the soldiers from the root of their stances and onto their backs. In the moments they found their footing again, so too did Tianshi, landing along the footpaths leading off in the direction of the others.

He stared them down only for a moment, as if challenging them to come after him, and then with an unnaturally quickness, turned heel and began a hurried retreat farther into town.

As he awaited the monk's response, Ryschi felt the ground move beneath his feet as the soldiers had recovered and begun raising a conical cage to surround them. He lowered his stance and quickly jabbed twice at the raising wall with his airbending. One shot a hole into the rock and the second shot through the hole and struck the soldier in the chest knocking him back and leaving the wall only 75% raised. His swampy friend outside the cage had also assisted by taking a guard out before his work was complete.

"I share allegiance with no aggressor. My 'side' is my own." claimed the monk as he leapt out the hole in the top of the cone.

Of course. The man sounds like the elders. 'My side is my own, I'm so unbothered.' I hate that guy already.

"Ryschi, can you tell yer friend in there to cool his gourd?" He heard the waterbender yell as the uninterrupted half of the earthen cage closed.

Ryschi launched himself upwards, through the gap left by the unfinished walls. He stood atop the structure and saw that the two guards had already gotten back up and the other two were watching the large monk leave. Suddenly, a wave of air collided with the men and they were down yet again. "I was working on it!" he called back to Huo as he ran over to him, "I heard that woman earlier call out for Shunon when half the guards ran off to chase a suspected firebender. We need to clean up here and go after her." Ryschi stood to Huo's left and turned to face the four soldiers and their captain.

Two soldiers took off to give chase for the other airbender, the other two held their ground against the pair. Two versus two might seem like fair odds, but Ryschi knew that this would be light work for him and Huo. He spun to his right, swinging his right arm outwards after it would no longer collide with the waterbender and brought his left arm inwards, the air gathering at his fist and becoming wider as he spun. Once he made a full circle, he fully extended his arm and let the wide blast fly towards the one soldier. He then stepped forward with his left leg and switched his arms positions, jabbing a smaller but quicker blast through the first. When the small blast struck the soldier, he would be knocked off his feet only for the large blast to catch up and continue to drag him all the way to the edge of the makeshift battlefield.

Trusting Huo to handle the other guard, and seeing that the captain still seemed to busy barking orders to also fight, Ryschi took off in the direction he saw the lady run in. He made his way along the docks using his airbending to increase his stride and quicken his pace. He made sure to keep close to water as he ran so that his ally could follow him at this speed. Upon reaching the textile district, he heard commotion going on further in but also saw other guards heading towards the sound themselves and elected to wait for Huo to catch up fully before making the decision of whether to head in or not.

The Knotwood Fishery

A pillar of earth erupted next to the stumbling soldier just before the larger wave slammed into him and he managed to regain his footing. The capitan stepped forward, unimpressed with both his own men and the gangly waterbender, as the other scrambled to his feet. Two air benders and a water bender doing everything they could to defend this little ship - the intel was correct this time. Finally, someone is doing their job right.

“Fetch the girl and the air benders. I’ll deal with this one.” The captain barked, immediately striking the pillar and sending three large stones hurling at Huo from every side. The other two saluted and bolted after the air benders, hopelessly out paced but working towards finding their comrades further in town.

Lazhou Alleys

The blazing flames did not go unnoticed. Shouts echoed down the street and people surged away from the area, including the poor owner of the rug who hastily snatched it out of the fire’s reach, as smoke billowed out of the alley’s mouth. The soldiers charged the flames, shoving their way through the crowd as they tried to navigate it with the grace of a bull in a china shop.

Two of them barely paused to pull on rocky armor as they charged through the flames, breaking through the burning crates with no care for if the flames spread, while the third flipped a plate of rock on top of the blaze to smother it. The two dropped their armor as they looked around, prepared for a fight as they continued forward cautiously.

“Oye, you.” The third soldier barked at Jin. “Did you see a woman with a lily blade run through here, or the fire bender who set blaze?”

Black Eel Inn

The woman stretched as she shifted from her perch out front the Black Eel Inn. She grimaced at the awkward pop in her shoulder, but shook it off. The excitement out front the Fishery was nearly wrapped up; the total abandonment of the water bender took her by surprise. Leaving the boy to deal with a hardened military man by himself was a cruel task; either his friend was confident in his skills or he didn’t know enough about the bender to stay back. Still, her part was played it seemed and so she’d finally take a moment to relax.

“May I have this game, friend?” She asked the old man at the Pia Sho table, waving down someone to fetch her a drink. She’d barely waited for the old man’s response as she brought out her own pieces, her red Rhododendron well worn.

Jin had expected the young man to suddenly start cowering, and run from the woman that was armed with a sword and described as a serial killer. What he did not expect in the slightest was to see them take flight, followed by the boy displaying the fact he was unambiguously a firebender. "What?" he managed after a moment. He went to give chase, but with the fire spreading from the crates Jin groaned. He couldn't just let them harm the property of whatever poor souls owned the buildings to either side of the alley. His lips turned to an O shape and he took a soft breath that almost whistled before crushing a few loose rocks underfoot to sand and using them to smother the flame moments after it was born.

The warrior stared in the direction of the fleeing fugitives, wondering what exactly the boy was. An accomplice of the vicious killer? Truth be told he didn't look the part in the slightest. No weapons about him, and he looked skinny. Moreso even than others tended to be relative to the rough hewn folk of the Earth Kingdom. Then again, if he was muscled like an ox, it would certainly be a lot harder to hide in plain sight.

Regardless of if he was a devious killer or just an idiot, the girl he was with was far worse than a mere murderer. On the plus side, the fact they were running from him meant they were scared of him rather than vice versa so he figured he stood a pretty good chance when he finally got to confront them. All of this thinking that happened in less than a second was interrupted as he realized that more former comrades appeared behind him. As Temujin listened to their question he scoffed. "No, just a few dozen dragons who accidentally lit those boxes on fire. Don't bother me if you're too incompetent to catch a dangerous criminal." With that he yet again erected himself a pillar to jump on the roof of the nearest building to try and get a view of where the fleeing duo had gone.

Squinting, it took a few moments to spot them but once more he gave chase. Hopping between buildings he roared at them. "Challenge me, coward!" Anyone who ran like them probably didn't have ego enough to be goaded into battle by a mere request for a duel, but who knew.

Huo

There will come a day, Huo, that you're going to have to fight for your home...

Huo quickly sprung into action, launching the whip immediately at the first of the large chunks of pillar coming his direction. The jet of water quickly pushed the projectile out of the way, and Huo spun around with his hands outstretched to form a new whip from the ocean behind him. He was able to spin and hit the second stone, knocking it just off course enough to impact the ground a mere foot to his left. However, Huo was out of time. He just barely managed to lift his arms to shield his face as the third stone hit him dead-center, sending the waterbender spinning and landing on his face on the shore. The pain was extraordinary, his nerves ablaze with desperate pleas for relief that would go unanswered. He could feel his heart beating through his extremities as pushed himself up onto his hands and knees. He turned a gaze up towards the captain, who just seemed to smile in sadistic amusement.

... I know it's not in your nature to fight. You want there to be another way...

Huo pushed himself up to his feet, and immediately threw two sweeps of his arms towards the captain. In response, two jets of water shot forth from the ocean behind Huo at the captain. The captain planted his feet in a wide stance and lifted up both arms to his sides, creating two small barriers to block the attacks shortly before they landed. The water splashed against the rock, but lacked the force to even make a dent in the flimsy barriers. Huo didn't let up, though. He swept his arms in slightly wider arcs, curving jets of water around the barriers towards the Captain, but the captain simply pulled his arms back. The earth shields moved to block the new attacks as well, to which Huo fired a water whip down the open center towards the captain. Huo's opponent merely smirked, took a forceful step forward, and a new barrier blocked the whip. The waterbender lost sight of his target behind the barrier for a moment... but only just a moment. Before he knew it, the new barrier lifted off the ground by an inch and was punched forward by the captain. Huo tried to sweep up a wave of water in front of him to create some sort of shield, but it proved fruitless: the large slab broke through the wave and knocked Huo onto his ass.

... you'll plead, or reason, or beg...

Huo spun around onto his belly, waves lapping up into his face and burning his fresh wounds. He gritted his teeth, only to find his mouth full of liquid already. He spat out its contents, opening his eyes weakly to see a cloud of red in the sea foam. His mouth tasted like iron and salt, as Huo once again tried to push himself onto his hands and knees. He felt the slight rumbling of the ground, and didn't even look up as he saw a shadow pass over him. His muscles burned as another slab was slammed onto his back with force. Huo's face was bashed into the sand, a fresh wave scooping saltwater into his mouth mid-gasp. His fingers dug into the sand, a desperate ploy for leverage to try and push himself up... but the weight was burdensome. He closed his eyes, unable to breath nor lift himself up in that instant.

... but the catgator ignores the cries of the fish. Some folks won't listen to words...

Huo felt, underneath his fingers in the sand, water pooling around them. In a desperate instant, he flexed his fingers. Water poured up from underneath the sand in a jet, catching Huo's palms. His upper torso bent up, the slab suddenly hoisted off his back and into the shallow shore behind him as he sat up on his knees. The waterbender watched the smug expression of the captain fade, the latter shifting back into a strong power stance. Huo, on the other hand, had lifted himself up onto one knee. He pressed one forearm into that knee, lifted himself up to his feet, and readjusted the leaf hat on his head. Huo's breathing was labored, and his arms hung to his side. He stood motionless, watching as the captain slammed one foot into the ground. Five vase-sized hunks of rock lifted out of the ground and hung in the air in front of the trained earthbender. The smug, toying expression was gone.

Huo waited until he saw the flexing of muscle in his opponent before he acted. The second the standoff was over, Huo lifted his right hand to send a large jet of water from the ocean propelling the stone slab forward in a high arc. The captain launched one rock straight forward. Huo spun around the projectile, using the arcing movement to pull up a wave from the ocean under his feet. He rode the wave upwards and towards his left, to which the captain responded by firing two of his ready rocks towards the moving target. Huo's arms dipped into the wave, and two jets of water cloaked themselves around his arms. Huo lifted these new water-tentacles up and lashed the ends of them around the new projectiles. With a mid-air spin, Huo used momentum to launch the two rocks back towards the captain. In a panic, the latter fired his last two projectiles to intercept. A cloud of earthen debris obscured the captain's vision for a moment, but not enough that he didn't notice the slab from before was plummeting towards him. The captain raised an fist, launching a pillar of stone to shatter the slab into pieces.

... some folks need to be taught some manners, swamp style.

The captain didn't notice how quickly Huo had closed the distance until it was too late. Huo had let one of the tentacles splash into the ground, and instead focused all his attention on his right arm. Huo rolled on the ground at the captain's feet, and rocketed up on his heels into a flying uppercut. The jet of water around his right arm propelled upward in front of his fist, enveloping the captain's torso and legs in a bubble of water. Huo's exhaled as the uppercut knocked the soldier just off his feet, and the blowing wind immediately began to freeze the water. Within the blink of an eye, the Earth Kingdom soldier's limbs and body were immobilized in a tomb of ice. His head was exposed, and the immediate outrage on his face was satisfying for Huo to see. The waterbender stumbled backwards, head still reeling from the sizable hits he had taken moments ago.

After taking a second to absorb his surroundings again, Huo filtered out the barking orders of the temporarily restrained captain. His eyes darted towards the direction he had seen the lady with the painted sword run off to. The ice wasn't going to last long... and he was sure a cheap trick like that wasn't going to work on him twice in a row.

Zai had no real plan. He only knew he needed to escape - the “where” and “how” were ancillary. He only knew he had to make it as hard as possible for his pursuers to follow if he didn’t want to leave Lazhou in shackles.

He kept up a merciless pace as he weaved through alleys and side streets, making a long and winding path to hopefully confuse any pursuers. The girl was an afterthought, though to her credit she managed to keep up enough that Zai wasn’t slowed down. He was making for the edge of town, then after that, maybe the woods; Earth Kingdom soldiers might be more hesitant to give chase if they had to fight their way through a blazing inferno.

Zai’s focus was split between the arduous task of putting one foot in front of the other at a punishing speed and listening for his pursuers. The rumbling of earthbending was still close behind, the nearest soldier crying out like a madman for a challenge. Zai was so concerned with the goings-on behind him that he almost didn’t notice the person in front of him until it was too late.

Skidding to a halt (only narrowly avoiding tripping altogether), Zai defaulted to a wide defensive stance in response to the blue-clad stranger, releasing the girl for a moment so he could have both his hands available. His eyes widened, however, when his opponent channeled water around his fists instead of earth. A waterbender? Here?

There was no explanation; instead, an accusation of being part of the resistance, and an offer of aid. “Are you crazy?” Zai exclaimed in response, “You’re going to get yourself arrested too!”

He looked hurriedly over his shoulder, noting the clouds of dust behind him and the approaching madman jumping between buildings. The waterbender was right; there was no time. Zai didn’t know anything about the resistance, and he would be wary to divulge anything even if he did. But the girl might know something - when she mistook him for Shunon, she talked like they were part of something organized. What had Shunon gotten himself into?

Zai regarded the waterbender anxiously, using up precious milliseconds to decide how to proceed. In his circumstances, he was loath even to admit he was a fugitive - but unfortunately, that lie went up in smoke along with the crates in the alley. And in any case, a waterbender was a lot more trustworthy than anyone else he could think of in Lazhou, and he needed all the help he could get.

“I’m not with them -- but I might know someone who is,” Zai finally answered, wasting no more time. He looked the waterbender in the eye, doing his best to gauge his sincerity. “Help me and I’ll help you. Deal?”

The rumbling behind them grew ever louder, and Zai took off down the street without waiting for an answer. There was no time to negotiate; he could only hope the waterbender would accept his bargain.

The Knotwood Fishery

Huo's victory had left the captain completely trapped, the man spouting a variety of nonsense. The fisherman, Bido, poked his head out from the fishery, in awe of the scene before him. The people that had stuck around out of sheer curiosity were also in quiet awe of the scene that had unfolded before them. A few courageous kids approached the ice, surprised that the captain had been detained.

Bido approached Huo, looking him up and down. "Well! I guess the swamp people really do have their own way of doing things," He noted, scratching his head. He looked towards the town, letting out a huff. "Guess I should wait 'till things settle down, but uh...if you're looking to play some shogi later, ask for Ena. She'll show you a good game." His words likely made little sense but he said them low enough only for Huo to hear.

The Streets of Lazhou

Zai's sudden flames had Ena on alert, although she put both her hands up in front of her as he noticed the shift from question to accusation. She shook her head, hoping to deescalate with what she hoped was a reassuring smile. "I'd ask you why you know him, but..." She was interrupted by the sudden soldier popping up. Zai reacted faster than she did and the next thing she knew was that she was being dragged through the streets. The boy was deaf to any complaint and she had to focus more on not tripping or stumbling, his iron grip not giving her any leeway in form of slipping out.

It wasn't until he came to a halt that Ena's luck ended, and while he was lucky not to trip, the sudden stop and him still holding on to her caused her to lose her balance. It wasn't until he let go that she actually fell, slamming her hands to the ground to avoid eating any dirt. She threw a glare up at Zai while she picked herself up, dusting herself off. She paused at Tao's words, letting out a tiny sigh.

"I think I'm the one he's talking about. This one's innocent in all this," Ena admitted, albeit she wasn't expecting Zai to just take off. "Wha--hey! Don't--"

She quickly gave up, knowing he wasn't going to stop for anything. Instead, she gave the waterbender her full attention, pointing both her fingers at him. "I can't leave the fishery defenseless, so I have to stand my ground here. If you're an ally, help me. Or...at least don't tell them where the guy ran off to. Refugees are quick to scare, so he's probably going to go hide somewhere. Hopefully."

The rumbling got closer, and at that point, it was time for her to make her stand. "I'm Ena of the Lily Blade. If you're going to flee, just ask for me at the Inn later, when things have calmed down. You'll get pointed in the right direction," She promised, withdrawing her sword and waiting for the rumbling of the earthbenders to get closer.

Tao's readied fist stayed trained on the firebender as he started to flee in preparation to drag him back for a proper answer, but the waterbender hesitated. There wasn't any time. The approaching eruptions were getting louder and accosting him would only get them both caught. His offer wasn't much to go on - namely because Tao still had no idea who he was or how to find him when the time came to collect on the promised help - but thankfully the crazy woman filled in the blanks for him. Still not ideal, but at least he had a name and a location.

If the rebels had the inn and the fishery, they must've had quite a hold on this village. Or this 'Ena' was still crazy and this was a horribly risky plan, which was still a distinct possiblity. Worse still, she wanted his support while she stood her ground. He'd happily help her flee, but to stand against every soldier in town in a cramped little alleyway? He hadn't wanted to even next to the ocean! How was she going to meet up with him at the inn when she clearly had a deathwish? Tao's eyes darted this way and that, mulling over risk versus reward and coming up blank.

"What, you're gonna fight all of them?" he whined, "I'd hoped you at least fled for backu-" Tao cut himself off as the sound of grinding stone grew too close for comfort, which heralded the appearance of a soldier on the rooftops above, shouting for a challenge. With no chances left to consider his options and his heart pounding in his chest, Tao finally made his decision.

A coward's decision, but a decision.

He staggered backward, putting on his best display of frustration. Well, the frustration was real, but the source wasn't. Tao's arms flailed, waving his frozen hands about as if he'd gotten something gross on them and he was trying to shake it off. He put distance between himself and Ena, regarding her warily as if she were an opponent that had bested him. For the second time that day, he fell back onto the ground as his eyes sharped into a glare.

"Get your stupid waterbender back here to unfreeze my hands so I can fight you properly!" Tao snarled up at Ena. Hopefully she wasn't too daft for the bit to go over her head, but he assumed she had to have a working knowledge of subtlety as a resistance fighter. Maybe.

As soon as the airborne soldier grew close, Tao called up to him. "Thank the spirits- all the benders fled that way!" He made a loose gesture down one of the side streets the firebender hadn't taken, pointed further away from the fishery. "You can probably catch them if you hurry!" His father would've been proud; the story was simple but his delivery was hopefully convincing enough. It kinda made him sick. He hoped that was the adrenaline, or at least added to his defeated demeanor.

Either way, he'd played his part. Going after the firebender might draw the soldiers, even if they weren't suspicious of his story, and fleeing back to the fishery was likely to keep him in the line of fire. The inn was a possiblity, but he doubted he'd get any information with the commotion still going on, and the risk of a soldier hearing him was too great.

So he did what he did best - Tao crawled away from the swordswoman and waited for an opportunity to come. The tides of the battle were still in flux; it was too early to commit to a course of action safely. If the woman lost, he'd still have the firebender. If she won, he had helped her. At the cost of his pride, no less! That had to count for something.

"Cowards!" he Jin roared, still running across the roofs. He paced his breath, for the duo he was chasing was certainly quite limber. Still, he would not give up. Evil was here, in great abundance. He couldn't just let a murderer like that get away freely just because he was working up a sweat. Those medals, they had to mean something. Another snarl came from Temujin as he redoubled his efforts. For but a moment he thought to help himself to use the earth in the tiles of the roofs to make himself go faster. But no, he could do it by foot. If he began to start choosing these sacrifices in other people's names, that would begin the exact same slippery slope that everyone in the Kingdom that wronged him went on. The same path that made perhaps once good souls into villains.

In anger over this injustice he channeled a second wind, until very abruptly his attention was taken away. Some kid yelled at him. Jin looked down at him, and tilted his head. The boy looked scrawny enough that he'd struggle to get a blanket off of himself in the morning. "Run away kid. This is dangerous, it should be safe over there." he pointed in the opposite direction of where he presumed Ena and her newfound companion were going. "Get out." he commanded, not really even considering what the boy said. Hopefully he had sense enough to save himself, unlike the strange young firebender with the girl.

The thought of the wellbeing of the weedy boy suddenly brought Jin back to his memory of the old man he had left to fend for himself. "Damn." he cursed under his breath. Not that much time had passed, and yet it was more than enough for Mr. Hanwei to get lost or even hurt again.

For a moment the veteran looked back at the rest of the village, pondering if he should go back.

No, he couldn't. He was one man, and Jin had to hope he would have listened and stayed put. The Laughing Lily was said to have killed a lot more than one person, and would kill again. "You cannot outrun me!" he bellowed, and gave chase once more.

A grin came over him as he spotted the two fugitives. He dropped down, again entering a boxer's stance with either arm upraised and covered in earth, a similar affair upon his legs to avoid getting embarrassed like the other Earth-Benders Ena had beaten.

"You, boy." the stranger was a Firebender, but in this moment Jin just couldn't see him as a violent sort. He couldn't just batter him down. Besides, it wasn't like there was a bounty on him. "My problem's not with you." Three stomps with a briefly bared foot, and Jin erected a small staircase for Zai to climb to escape. "Get out, run fast." he was about to turn to Ena, before another thought hit him. "There's an old man out by the first shop behind the wall I made. One of you, Fire Nation. Help him. He's got a green cloak, brown bandana, little gold pendant on his neck. Eyes the colour of fire."

Finally, he could turn his attention to the Laughing Lily. "Now, drop the sword and put your hands on the ground and this can go smoothly. There's nowhere to run, and I'd rather not have to break you." But to demonstrate he was more than willing to do so, he banged his rocky fists together, producing a small light-show of sparks.
