This was inspired by Jade Empire. It is a work in progress, takes place in a setting similar to Ancient China, includes Asian folklore/culture/ethics/weapons/names/society, and will be focused on martial arts. In this roleplay, everyone is capable of using 'Chi'; Chi is an internal energy that every living being has, but it can only be tapped into by the most determined martial artists. Chi takes the place of magic in this roleplay, and plays a big role in each character's abilities.

Story
The story begins at Master Wu's Dojo, a martial arts academy built high atop a mountain. Your characters came here to learn martial arts, and were not allowed to leave until Master Wu formally recognized them as a mater of at least one style. Unfortunately, Master Wu's past catches up to him and events take place that force the group to leave the mountain-top and embark on a vital quest across the 'Broken Empire' where you'll meet new characters, learn new abilities, explore dark catacombs, climb high mountains, and face the deadliest of opponents.

If you're interested in a backstory: The land was once divided (like the Three Kingdoms period in China, or the Sengoku period in Japan). The land was ultimately unified under a single emperor, but his reign would quickly end and his throne was abdicated by another more harsh and cruel emperor. Master Wu started his academy in his younger years and decided to live out his life to train students in martial arts... but is their something darker at play here, and what connections does Master Wu have with this 'cruel' emperor?

Martial Art Styles
Each character has a unique and special martial arts style they'll use throughout the roleplay. Your character can learn additional styles by training/sparring with the other player-characters. All styles typically follow one of three disciplines:
Fast - Fast styles are the weakest of the three disciplines, but they rely on quick attacks and are known for their agility, best used against Strong styles.
Balanced - Balanced styles do not trade speed for strength or vice versa; they are versatile and the most common discipline, best used against Fast styles.
Strong - Strong styles, while slow, rely on raw strength and brute force, best used against Balanced styles.

You should appropriately name your unique martial arts style. After that decide on a discipline. You'll need to describe/explain your style as well. Do you move fast like a tiger and pounce on opportunity with a relentless assault? Or are you calm and relaxed like a gentle stream? Do you strike out with the unforgiving strength of a gorilla? Do you rely on counters, blocks, and/or evasion? Do you prefer to analyze your opponent before moving in, or do you blindly attack them?

Techniques
Techniques are special skills and abilities your character has learned and/or mastered. Any Chi abilities go here (healing, additional speed/strength/perception, fireballs, wind gushes, water powers, orb of energy, Chi blasts, etc). Techniques can also be physical talents you know, such as a character's signature 'paralyzing palm-strike'. If you have any questions on abilities, just ask.

Dragon's Peak Temple - Ancient temple that was destroyed during the Warring States period; it was renovated and reopened by Master Wu nearly seventy years ago.
Master Wu - Current Master of Dragon's Peak Temple. He is a wise old man, alive even at 101 years old, but he remains a capable and powerful martial artist.

I'm interested, but who/what will the enemies we face be like? Are they the emperor's soldiers, giant creatures, or what?

There's an enemy faction we'll be facing mostly, but we'll also be fighting soldiers, ghosts, demons, and other Asian folklore creatures. I still need to do my research.

Also, I forgot to mention that you can also have weapon styles... that is, if anyone wants to use weapons.

Well guys let me just come up with the cast of characters I want, then plan out the beginning of the RP, and I may post an OOC/IC.

Go ahead and be thinking of a martial arts style you will want to use.

Conveniently enough, I've had a wuxia character drawn up for a while now and have been waiting for quite some time to use her in something. And I'm thinking of making her use a strong, hard-style martial art the specifics of which I shall figure out soon enough. Although I tend to base hard martial arts on Lau Gar kung fu since that's the stuff I know, but we'll see how that turns out.

...I may need to change her name and the actual basis of her martial arts if they're too silly for the kind of tone you're going for, but other than that, um... Yeah. ^^;

Can I base my character's style on Taekkyeon? Because I was thinking of basing the style on Taekkyeon. Mostly the kick based aspects of the style.

Guys, I don't know much about martial arts. I took karate for one month, and I watch MMA, but other than that I don't know a whole lot about martial arts. Your martial art styles are entirely up to you.

Wow, I've met very few people that have even heard of Jade Empire on the net. Let alone people that would want to RP it. I'm sold!

Jade Empire is a BioWare RPG with a martial arts/Chinese backdrop.

I still believe that one day they will make a Jade Empire 2.

Hmmm, looking it up it looks pretty fun... Might check it out at some point. It helps that Bioware did make my favourite western RPG series (Baldur's Gate! ^_^) so I kind of trust them a bit here, but we'll see. XD

Hang on now, this is not based in Jade Empire, it is a separate setting. Jade Empire was just a huge inspiration.

I am interested as well just finished replaying jade empire. For tr first Time in a game where it's an option that I am not sure if I want to be a wizard archetype.

Edit: I just mentioned jade empire because it got me really interested in that setting again and martial arts

I've heard about it, but my computer is too crappy to actually run it.

Making up a martial arts style should be fun though :P
