Seriously. That there's *one* other person out there right of center is shocking to me.

I'm a green, obviously. I generally believe that the state should not interfere in the private lives of individuals, or infringe on their rights for any reason, unless they have strong, undeniable evidence that that person has or is going to infringe the rights of others. Essentially, people can do what they want, as long as they're not damaging others in some way. I do, however, also believe in the state as a publicly-accountable medium through which society can act cohesively in order to support one another - I'm a huge supporter of public healthcare, for example.

I'm not sure that most people with that viewpoint fully understand its implications. There are numerous things which society deems unacceptable and that are thus legislated, but do not directly harm others. Should all of those things be made legal?

My use of "harm" is fairly broad - I mainly mean infringing on the rights of others in some way. Whether it's direct or indirect in its effect is irrelevant. Of course, the practical implementation of the belief is therefore limited, as very few things can be said to in no way adversely affect others, and thus we end up in debate of how much one is reasonably allowed to affect others. The principle isn't necessarily useful once you try to apply it practically, but I still support the theory behind it.
Can I ask for some examples of what you were referring to, just to get a clearer picture of what you're getting at? I'm not sure if you're including things like the seat-belt argument from earlier in the thread, which only really affects the driver directly but certainly affects others indirectly, or...?

I'd have to say, i'm pretty much all over the spectrum, including a few off the wall ideas. Let's see, Conservative, because I'm pro-life, traditional marriage and a strong military keeps your enemies in line, progressive, because I believe in unions as a way to ensure workers are properly paid, and know that there are some incredible fat-cats on both sides of the aisle, ya, Kock and Soros both are crooks. I do also think there are a lot of loony laws out there, but as well there are more loony lawyers who make a lot of money off of people suffering, after all, how many people get rich chasing ambulances, besides doctors? I believe in the Darwin awards, and that they need to remove safety labels and let God sort out who survives and anyone dumb enough to juggle chainsaws should not be allowed to sue the company for his or her own stupidity. If you're smoking by a gas pump, you're an idiot, and if you blow yourself up, thanks....now we don't have to deal with your genes.
In terms of society, I think there is a strong lack of common sense, morals, ethics, values and behaviors in this day and age...ya, i'm old, but at the same time, we didn't have school shootings, rampant desire to legalize everything, and that if a car was backing up, hello, stop and wait for the car? Nowadays we see a generation growing up believing in entitlement...and it's frightening to wonder what the next 30 years will play out with.
Lastly, let's throw a major curve ball. Communism, if done properly, would be a good thing. How? Simple....Communism doesn't have a welfare state....you have to work, to eat. No work, no eat. No need for money...granted, communism isn't well-known for having a major use of lawyers or over-priced doctors...but at the same time, communism suffers from two fatal flaws: In communism, there is no major desire for people to better themselves...greed wouldn't exist, because what are you going to do, hoard food? Secondly, is that naturally people are greedy, and with greed, fosters a desire to do more....sometimes for good, sometimes for worse. Hey, look at what we did with airplanes, in the first fifty years that it was around? A rickety glider, to the ability to wipe out a city with a single bomb...scary, but that's progress.

Oh, depending on who you talk to, i'm pure evil...but that happens. As for politics, it's all relative, depending on who you're trying to impress, get money from....after all, look at Obama. As soon as the powers that be threatened to pull funding, he "suddenly" had an "evolving" opinion on same-sex marriage. To spell it out, his buddies in New York, California and Mass all decided for a big stink, if he didn't throw his hand in. Conservatives have their own groups, but surprisingly, get more bad press because, well....the media put Obama in there....they don't want to lose their "imperial leader".

The media put Obama in power. Really? The right wing, patriotic, conservative, slightly racist media put a center left leaning, African American, progressive-ish politician in power. Makes sense.

I define myself as a libertarian, but the extremes of my party go too far.

As far as the test shows I'm slightly off right, but halfway if not more down. My social policies would never allow me to drift too far off to the conservative end, but granted I tend to qualify such issues instead of taking one side or the other.
