Hello, this RP caught my interest, and I'd like to make a request. I understand that this may not exactly fit what you're all trying to do here, so if you feel this idea is disagreeable, I'll simply pack up and leave. I'd like to play as a character/characters without magic.

Now, I never really got into Strike Witches. I tried watching it once or twice, but it never really caught my interest. One question I always had when watching it though, was 'where the hell is everyone else'. I mean, short of the beginning scenes where they're on a carrier, you don't really see too many men running around, and this is WWII, or at least a sort of continuation of it. This was pretty much the largest war the world's ever seen, and all sides had massive armies of men ready to murder each other, and now everyone's working together in the face of an alien invasion and... they never really show up. Perhaps they showed up later, during the majority of the series which I didn't watch, but at least from what I've seen, Castle Barin looked really empty. I think striker techs were shown, like... once? So, I found this RP here, and thought, 'hey... this seems like a good place to play out all that stuff that I imagine happens offscreen, with the more 'regular' war effort.

Like I said before, I completely understand if this doesn't fit into what you guys are trying to do here, and there won't be any hard feelings or anything if you say no.

Actually, funny enough, I was going to have some more involvement with the regulars of the base the 509th is stationed. Most Strike Witches wings distance themselves from regulars because usually those massive armies your talking about get brushed aside by the Neuroi pretty swiftly and brutally (not to say conventional weapons are entirely useless). But yeah, the soon to be tour of the base was going to include both the introduction of a few key regular characters and the bigger ideal that we are all in this together, witch and regular soldier alike.

So! I'm going to say post your character and I'll see whether it fits in nicely or not.

I had the same thoughts when I watched it last; you see a few instances of normal soldiers fighting alongside Witches (the Zeroes flown from the Akagi in the last few episodes of season 1 for example) but they tend to be redshirts killed off willynilly. It'd be interesting to see a few soldiers who didn't die a few second after being introduced.

Incidently, I'll be away for a few days. I'll have my phone and I'll try to keep up but don't expect long posts til mid next week.

Um, I feel like I should point out that the reason regular soldiers don't do much in Strike Witches is because they're not very useful against the Neuroi and it would kind of be a waste of life to send them out there to try and fight them all the time. Sometimes planes and ships act as support for the Witches but that's not very common because the Neuroi can take them out very quickly.

That said there were engineers and stuff, just not direct combat personnel hanging around all the time. People in charge of technology and stuff were still around.

A 'regular' war effort doesn't really work against the Neuroi, which is why the Witches are used like they are. They don't want to just get people killed.

Also, WWI and WWII did not happen at all in Strike Witches. There were no huge armies ready to kill each other because the circumstances in Strike Witches' world were very, very different. Everything you see in the show was developed to be anti-Neuroi, and even then it was only the Witches who proved to be effective against them. Any non-Witch effort to fight the Neuroi kind of goes terribly terribly wrong.

Um, just felt like I should point that out. ^^;

Yes, we've covered well how the grunts in the series were fairly ineffective against the Neuroi. But you'll see how I'll play it out in the RP once everyone has gotten in their first post (Rin and Lost Cause). Like I said before, I would be more than happy to see the potential of this unknown story being told from the view point of the regular supporting soldiers of the 509th. Also, apparently through reading the some of the light novels and the opening to the movie, the writers seem to imply that the Neuroi have been appearing again and again through history. Sooo yeah.

Now this is not to say that a Flak 88 can't take out a Neuroi, it's just a hell of a lot harder when its being crewed by soldiers and in a fixed or less mobile position.

I'm not saying that there's not supporting forces or anything, I'm just saying they aren't just standard ground forces. They're always using AA guns or on ships or stuff like that, ground soldiers aren't going to be useful enough to have them risking their lives all the time.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, it sounding like the initial suggestion meant just standard ground troops and not people crewing more substantial weapons or transports.

And Neuroi have been appearing throughout history, but I think the only time where it got to this point without them quickly disappearing was during the first Neuroi War.

I dunno. I'm of the opinion that, since absolutely nothing we're writing will be canon, we should feel free to explore outside CERTAIN boundaries set by our fearless leader/GM. The story canon should be guidelines for our own.

That's what I've got to say about that.

Now I'll just shut up and pet the kitty!

I was under the impression the RP wasn't meant to diverge from canon even if it's a situation that isn't described in canon.

Basically this. I... Honestly think that fandom RPs should remain faithful to the original works, because otherwise you may as well just make your own original thing based on it if you start changing big things. And I honestly don't really like the idea...

...Been having difficulties coming up with a post since I've been feeling sick over the past couple of days, but... We'll see. Depending on how things go, should hopefully have one out by the start of the weekend but we'll see.

*sigh* Jeez, never thought this was going to turn into a big deal..... Okay, I'm not diverging from Canon in the sense that suddenly regular troops become effective, I just want to have fun with the notion that instead of what they did in first season and essentially "shun" the other staff of the base because Minna was being all weird about it, we can actually have a much more characterized community of both witches and regulars. I'm not making any "big changes" to alter the Canon, just our wing commander isn't Minna and is a hell of a lot more laid back about troop-witch interaction than Minna was. That's it. I think it was quite obvious from the beginning of Strike Witches that the real reason behind the typical shunning and absence of other base staff was to fully encourage and/or make sure that the viewer gets that this is a yuri focused show when it comes to relationships.

Anyway, I'm not messing with anything major in the canon settings, I'm just saying that Alivia isn't Minna, and it may be interesting to have a played character be a regular, though I do want to see the CS first before I make any final decisions. Besides, I think there was a misinterpretation of Aleranicus post. Of course, correct me if I'm wrong, but I read it as this RP doesn't stick to canon story, and that you guys are free to have fun with items that may have not been fully covered or explained in the show. The canon setting is the dough of the jelly donut, and we're just switching out the fillling (or however that's suppose to go XD) Just have fun guys!

And hey, rest up and and I hope ya feel better! Looking forward to when you can post Rin.

I don't have an issue with them appearing more, as long as combat-wise it's still like what it was in canon.

Also keep in mind that while regular forces are seen fighting the Neuroi, it's not until the latter half of season two and the movie that they're actually seen being effective. (See also the captain of the Yamato referring to newly developed specialist ammunition in S2E08)

Huh, WW2 never happened? I was under the impression that WW2 did happen, and that the neuroi just kinda interrupted it. Well either way, I'll get a character up soon, currently debating what role he's going to be, as in infantry, tanker, engineer, etc. Any recommendations would be readily accepted.

I would recommend engineer if you want your character to live long. And I would heavily heavily suggest you read the wiki for Strike Witches just to get a better idea of what's going on in the world.

And here we are, my two character sheets. If you're wondering why I ended up doing two, I had originally decided to go with an engineer kind of character, as Avalant had recommended, but I soon figured that I'd have little to nothing to do whenever combat rolled around. So I decided to create an infantryman too. The reason for the infantryman was that if I'm going to be playing a soldier who was utterly outmatched and outgunned, might as well go all the way, but if you feel that Daniel is too fragile to be any kind of recurring character, i can change him to become a tanker instead, though I'd have to do some research seeing as I know less about tanks than I do about regular infantry.
Name: Daniel Shatter

Age: 19

Appearance: Standing at a rather average height of 5’9”, and looking to be of decent fitness, Daniel doesn’t quite cut an imposing figure, and he lacks any real distinguishing feature. His brown hair has been cut to military standards, and his eyes are an entirely average shade of green. His pointed chin bears no sign of facial hair, mostly because Daniel has an awful time growing any kind of decent beard, as it tends to come out extremely patchy, and as such, he’s taken the time to make sure that he stays clean shaven. Daniel is stronger than he looks though, and he has to be, seeing as how he’s been issued a light machine gun.

Nation: United States of Liberion

Rank: Corporal

Weapons: Browning Automatic Rifle M1922, Colt M1911 sidearm

Role: Infantry Light Machine Gunner

Personality: Daniel was once impulsive, stubborn, and often got in trouble at school. Army basic training solved most of these issues, but some of these old habits still shine through from time to time. He is the kind of man to think with his heart, and more often than not, is the kind of man following orders rather than giving them. Daniel is by no means stupid, but he isn’t exactly a genius either, but what he lacks in smarts, he makes up for with bull headed courage.

Bio/History: Daniel had never been one to stop to think things through. He had always acted on impulse, one of the reasons he always seemed to get in trouble back home. The first time that he had ever found himself indecisive about something came when he finally finished high school. He had always planned on take after the family business, managing a small construction supply store, but when his close friend, Byron, decided to join the army, Daniel was conflicted between staying home or joining with him. His selection from the draft made that choice for him.

After his training, Daniel spent several months in one of the safer areas of Africa, some distance away from the front lines. His regiment still faced the occasional attack from the Neuroi, but Daniel himself was lucky enough to never see actual combat during this time. This seems soon about to change as the 350th Infantry Regiment now sees itself drawn closer towards the front lines.
Name: Byron Harrison

Age: 19

Appearance: Byron stands at a flat six-feet tall, and carries a handsome face, though he is a little on the scrawny side. His blonde hair is grown out as far as military regulations allow, and then some. He has amber colored eyes, and he has just the slightest bit of stubble on his chin. Byron has a scar, going from right under the right side of his mouth, running diagonally up to his cheek. He likes to say that he earned it in a fight back home, but the truth is simply that he gave himself a rather nasty cut when he tried shaving for the first time.

Nation: United States of Liberion

Rank: Corporal

Weapon: Colt M1911 sidearm

Role: Striker Mechanic

Personality: Byron is a quiet man, often lost in his own thoughts. He has a sharp mind, and learns things easily, which is what earned him his position as a Striker Mechanic. While he is a man of few words, that does not mean that Byron is an entirely serious man, and while he is not as boisterous as most would be, Byron still finds enjoyment in the small things that a group of friends can bring.

Bio/History: A close school friend of Daniel’s, Byron often found himself trying to reason Daniel out of any number of bad decisions. It would come as a shock to Daniel when Byron seemed to take a page from his book, and enlist with the U.S. Army in the spur of the moment. His smarts found him availability for a wide range of jobs, from which he was selected to be a Striker Mechanic.

As many witches found themselves stationed near the front in order to respond to Neuroi threats more quickly, so too, did Byron find himself stationed with them, near the danger of the front lines. He found himself attached to a Joint Fighter Wing, where he worked with other mechanics from around the world and learned to repair and maintain numerous different kinds of Striker units. He was transferred to Africa just a little bit before the new 509th witches were, in order to prepare for their arrival.
