So I'm free to IC as long as it's not Kasahov related?

Also how is 1/4th a galaxy too small? That's literally billions of star systems in the playable area. The scaling of this NRP already a wee bit loppy seeing how crazy picky with star systems factions seem to be, but I'd not assume the RP small because of that. It's more that there is a hell of a lot of wasted space more than anything else.

What? Nobody said it's too small.

Announcement of Utmost Importance:

I, your almighty and sometimes irrational GM, have decided to speak regarding an issue.

As Arawak and others have brought up a couple of times now, our empires are not nearly large enough to fill 1/4th the galaxy, but the map makes it appear as though they do.

I've decided, therefore, that we should assume the area we are RPing in is only a small part of the alpha quadrant. In other words, we are in a small fraction of a fraction of the galaxy, because space is enormous and it would take hundreds or thousands more years of expansion to actually fill the Alpha Quadrant to it's complete capacity.

Our explorers, it can also be assumed, are not necessarily exploring the part of the galaxy depicted on the map. If you want, we could say that your character has flown off somewhere to the left (or right, or south, or north, or up, or down- it's all subjective in space) of our map to explore the mostly uncharted territories of the Alpha Quadrant.

That is all. You may return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Originally was going with a mercenary, but I may go with a military type character, a member of the Federal Exploration Corps.

@Ozerath
The Commonwealth has made a huge mistake if they attempt to "nab Xim space".

As my N.S. (which is coming in a few hours, everyone) will show, the Xim have the weakest invasion forces in the entire galaxy (hence why they couldn't hurt the Federation and probably never will), but the strongest defense. Of all the nations, I would daresay that the Xim are the most difficult to invade.

Don't get me wrong, you could wipe out a Xim offensive like it was a mosquito, but you would get crushed if you approached one of their planets. Their ships are pathetic in every way, but more than ships defend them.

If it doesn't sound to OP of me to say this, your ships wouldn't stand a chance the moment they entered Xim space. Now, stay OUT of Xim space and you could utterly destroy anything they send at the Federation, but the moment you're on the Xim's turf, you're going to start losing badly.

Of course, I don't blame you for making that mistake, as I don't have an NS up yet. Sorry

So, basically, it's like fighting Russia. Fight them off their turf and win, fight them on their turf and you've done goofed.

Yes. Well. No. There are custom-made rules for each member state to keep them in check, but each member state was appropriately satiated before the edicts went into effect through Adjustment Teams. Furthermore, there are three general laws: 1. Don't be unreasonable. 2. Don't destroy the Coalition without proper approval. 3. Don't attack fellow Coalition members.

The third law has been interpreted to mean that no Coalition member may be captured for the purposes of enslavement within Coalition space unless local law says otherwise.

The cast-offs have colored Coalition's stereotypes of other nations, but that's just the stereotypes. If the Coalition has contact with the civilization in question, most people can see past that sort of thing.

Understood. And makes sense, the galaxy is beyond huge. Even the biggest of our empires are tiny compared to the galaxy as a whole.

I should be done ironing out my NS and posting tomorrow. Glad to be here to RP with everyone.

I concur, my empire is among one of the smaller ones and the Doctrinate can barely fill up a mid-sized nebula.

Also I'm going to beef up my economy section, but apart from that is my NS good?

Still working on my sheet and first IC post, but it might be a lil bit before I can be really as active as I'd like to be, since I'm doing finals this week and will be returning to the United States from Spain on Friday. But, fear not, I am still invested and want to take part in the RP.

I might very well finish my first IC post before the sheet, just because I do a good deal of worldbuilding in the actual writing of posts and find it somewhat difficult to write out everything there is to say before I actually get around to playing with it IC. Not to mention I'm not as used to writing sci-fi as I am fantasy and haven't read as much sci-fi as I have fantasy, so I need to get a hang of it.

First post starts out with an accounting of the first usage of il-ship tech (suicidal whale bioships) during the 3rd Siege of Huy :3 Battle scenes acoming!

By the way @Hael, can you remind me of the policy on telepathy? I'm trying to find it in the thread to no avail.

Ah, telepathy. It's the closest thing to magic seen in most Sci-fi. It's an amazing idea, but unfortunately, it has some limitations.

Most sci-fi with telepathy excuse it by claiming that the species evolved to possess this ability naturally, and thus is capable of reading the thoughts, or at least feeling the emotions, of every living thing they encounter (see: Deanna Troi). I call bullshit. Yes, I believe it would be possible for telepaths to exist, but I cannot think of any logical reason why they could sense the thoughts of other species. I imagine that any telepathic species would communicate by sending mental signals out using an organ presumably located in their brain, which another member of that same species would "hear" using a similar organ.

Now tell me, what if Species A is able to telepathically communicate through these organs, but Species B does not have them, and therefore does not send out mental signals? How would Species A pick up on the thoughts of B?

Hint: they wouldn't.

Use telepaths all you want. Telepathy is cool. But don't attempt to say that your species can read the thoughts of every other species. It makes no sense.

The only possible exception is if the telepathy worked through some sort of technology, but we'll cross that bridge if we get to it

This is what the OP says.

@Lauder Thanks oodles, I looked at the OP as well but I suppose I missed that part!

Just wanted to make sure telepathy was kosher. The Hierophant of the Ascendancy is in possession of quasi-telepathic ability, but I'm not sure yet whether this is due to his technological modifications or because somehow he has preternatural skills. Still trying to work that one out.

Also really trying not to draw too many parallels between the Rashidun Caliphate and the Ascendancy but I have to admit that their whole jihad thing and Islamic-inspired military ranks might seem a bit obvious.

However the collectivism vs. individualism debate which I want to raise with the Mur-Po does not reflect my IRL opinions.

@Lauder Yeah! I think so as well. The Mur-Po have cultivated a sense of collective warrior identity due to their long history of militarism. The war with the Atlas Parliament was so fierce and so costly that no room could be made for individual concerns. An entire neuter sex was artificially engineered (though they are effecitvely braindead but capable of copulation and bearing to term) The Hierophant, ultimately, desires the instrumentality of the Mur-Po race, the harmonization of their minds and bodies to form a single military entity.

I have a lot of ideas about how I want to explore the theme of individuality and identity with that. Without ripping off the Borg too much ;)

Oh wow. The X'Cor, while very militaristic, have always been for individuality. Hell, their government is based on the individual kills of a person. If the Mur-Po asked the X'Cor for their opinion then they would say individuality.
