To be devils advocate, the randomization would probably simulate the panic and uncertainty of a first contact situation better; just because your captain says hold fire, a single gunner's panic could overwhelm any order etc.

You would think! However, construing it in this manner does not create a story based on Circumstance but rather Convenience.

Allow me to explain. There are three civilizations, named A, B and C respectively.

A and B jump into the same system and A (who is RP'ing a militant faction), declares war on B. Their initial contact has ended in hostility.

The very next turn A and C meet each other. 9/10 Player A will opt for peace with that nation, because he is at war with another nation.

The aspect of chance here is represented by the fact that while you represent your civilization, you do not control the utmost decision making of every single person/construct within it. This is not undermined by an inability to make peace following initial hostilities, however. So have no worries.

If need be, ask yourself what you would do -- were you a soldier -- and you were guarding the President of the United States when an alien space shuttle landed somewhere in the domestic United States. You're ordered by your superior to protect the President at all cost, and the aliens walk down the ramp with what appears to be assault rifles in hand and body armor on. They point it at the President. What do you do? Right, right. You just started an intergalactic war and all that alien was trying to do was get a seismic reading on the planet on which he had just landed.

Or maybe you don't shoot, and he blows the fuckin' Presidents head off. History is made of impulsive stuff.

I'm not very interested in continuing this RP if the social interactions between players are subject to random number gods. That's frustrating and defeats the point of RPing in the first place.

I'm curious as to how these rolls are made, exactly, as well as the system that's in place to determine what happens and what doesn't.

The only thing that is held to chance (and at worst case scenario a 3 out of 4) is how your civilization reacts when first encountering another galactic civilization. Everything else is up to you.

The determinant is up there. The mechanic is random.org

This RP was advertised as having a focus on first contact scenarios. By taking control of how those play out out of the hands of players, you are not fulfilling that promise.

well, what I would have done was stand in front of the president while aiming a riffle at the aliens, if they were to shoot, I would shoot, I they didn't, nether would I, simple =3 how it would go from there I have no idea XD

The correct answer is don't have your president present when aliens with questionable tools land outside.

In any case, I'm dropping out of this.

If people want full control of their ship's captains decision making. They shall have it, then.

I'm sorry, but I'm having a really hard time here as well, albeit for other reasons.
Applying the cultural and psychological standards of humans uniformly on all forms of alien life seems completely unrealistic.
Simply taking for example the Srephariin, Noir'an and Lunarians, some species have limited, if not non-existent, concepts of destructive conflict.
One suggestion I would make would be to add psychological and cultural modifiers to the game.
For example, Lunarians would be far less likely to have violent first contact than the Athanatos. It is simply logical.

While the risk might always still be present, I find it simply unrealistic to give every single species the exact same.

I question how jet fighters weren't scrambled and surface-to-air missiles weren't tracking the vessel. In general, the president would have been evacuated and the craft would have been destroyed.

If it was trying to get readings from the planet, it could have done this in space.

That scenario is a little...'off' to say the least.

As far as I can tell there are now two open slots in this RP. May I ask who will be filling them?

I would post, but as the racial bonus of the Insectoids is still a matter of debate I am afraid I cannot utilize my turn to the best efficiency if I rush it. The Second Dominion is all about efficiency compared to the first one, so I would do wrong to my people if I did that.
