Name: Nadya Alexandrovna Volkov-Johnson (Волков-Джонсон Надя Александровна)
Nickname: Let the characters think of one - maybe she'll let you use it.
Age: 26
Gender: Female, lest mine eyes doth deceiveth me.
Nationality: Russian-American
Appearance: In-Depth Personality: Nadya is an openly caring and surprisingly vulnerable soul - the world that is fast approaching is one that many would say she is not fit for. However, she was raised not with tough skin, but rather with a malleable spirit and a hard head. In one word, she could be described as compassionate. Due to this more sensitive side, Nadya is a more skilled medical expert (see background - Emergency Room Nurse) and friend. On the other hand, it also means that even at work she takes each and every loss quite personally and in force. Being a mother, Nadya also has an overwhelmingly nasty protective side, even for friends and the defenseless. Thanks to her work in the Emergency Room, despite her empathy, the former nurse has a strong stomach and hardly flinches at the sight of blood or even something as significant as a seizure. She has a very professional attitude when the pressure rises, but as soon as the dust has settled, Nadya turns a switch from the girl that only her co-workers would know to one that they would think they had never met.
Character background: Born in Saint Peterburg, Russia, Nadya grew up in a Russian-speaking household. Her mother and father were divorced when she was rather young, so her memory serves her better when it comes to her mother's second husband - the man she called papa. He was an American studying abroad for his Doctorate of Science and after he finished his work in Russia, he was able to take his new wife and step-daughter with him to the U.S. There, she grew up outside of Baltimore, Maryland before moving to Columbus, Ohio for her own undergraduate education in Nursing. She had clearly adapted well to the American Private School system, as opposed to Russia's public one.
After receiving her first degree, she found a job working in a Chicago Emergency Room and was also thusly accepted to a part-time Master's Degree program in a highly renown school there. Amidst all of this, Nadya met her future husband, Derek. He was a fresh Police Academy graduate and, like her, he wanted to make the world a better place, but rather as a protector than a savior. In a city like Chicago, with all of the other stress Nadya dealt with, the last thing she needed was a man on the Force to think about all day - a man that she knew could be the next one wheeled in on a cart with no hope. Time and time again she turned him away. Finally, she caved in to his request when he showed up in her ER with a bullet hole in his shoulder after he made a joke about finding a fight just to get dropped there. Not even her parents know which came first - the baby or the ring - but they got married just under a year later.
Thus ended the happy, albeit hardest-working, part of Nadya's life. Two years after they got married, Derek was killed in a firefight. But, unlike she thought, he was not rolled in on her shift. No, it happened in the middle of the day, while she was taking a nap during one of the rare moments that her son, Joseph, was not begging for attention. She answered the door in pyjamas and a man stood there before her with stars on his uniform's shoulder boards and a cap in his hand. At his side stood a Chaplain. She can't even remember how she told Joseph that his father would not be coming home, or how she told her mother... Or when she let Joseph go to Maryland to spend the summer with his grandparents... She can't recall a mere summer turning into the rest of the year... Before she knew it, Nadya was visiting her son, rather than his grandparents coming to visit him. He always said how much he missed her, but they talked all the time. Her house was always a mess after Derek's passing and she said that as soon as she finished her degree and got a less crazy job, then she would move out to Maryland to be with the whole family. Her father said he knew a Johns Hopkins Alum who could get her transferred, but she almost done already - it would be simpler to just stay where she was, after all.
Just as she was reaching the culmination of her degree, Joseph turned two - she felt like she'd missed so much. Maybe not his first steps or words, but everything else were naught but photos. But never again, she vowed. She just had to put in a couple extra hours this fall and she could finish early - maybe spend some of her pent-up vacation time to get in the extra papers and projects, then she could move.
That's when it happened... It started as reports in the warmest parts of the world - this new disease was spreading. Is sounded like a weirdly mutated Rabies with the infectivity of HIV. It seemed more than abnormal, but surely it would be contained. Then it started traveling north - it seemed more serious than previously thought. Nadya was already packing to go back to Maryland, only a little bit of time. She didn't quite get to finish her degree - she had to extend just one more semester, but she was ready to move already. Her apartment lease was nearly terminated and her notice was already in at work. Days before she was going to move, her parents called and said they were going farther North - to meet them in Toronto, at their second apartment there. They claimed not to be afraid of the infection, but were just erring on the side of caution. Nadya understood - plus, it was a closer drive and she was happy they were protecting Joseph. They were getting older, so staying ahead of the danger was their best option.
