Name: Shun Baba
Age: 74 (looks 14-16)
Gender: Male
Race: Demon
Appearance: Despite his intimidating glare, Shun barely stands to the shoulder of his younger brother (horns included). His face HAS matured slightly since he became a demon, though he is decidedly on the ‘younger looking’ side of demonhood.
Personality: Shun is quite, disciplined, calculated, and cool in all situations. He has a reputation of being the only Baba of the trio who can do anything with any degree of reliability, as well as being the smartest of the three by leaps and bounds. However, like his brother and mother, he can be overly frank, often dipping into outright rudeness is he’s not careful. He is also nowhere nearly as friendly as either of them, though he is trying to improve on this. He deeply cares for his family, though admits to not liking being around them much, claiming they are ‘insufferably cheerful, thick, loving and intolerably dim.’ All of which being traits he is admittedly still awkward at handling, even after 70 some odd years of life.
Abilities: Affinity- fire: More specifically, Shun has a strong affinity for detonation magic in its various forms. For obvious reasons, he is hesitant to use spells from this field to their maximum potential and has since mastered a level of control that would impress even seasoned mages. While he can cast explosive spells at a singular point, he perfers to use his catalyst ‘gun’ to fire projectiles, using a combination of finely tuned explosive spells and spells for forming rubber and metal ammo. See equipment for more details.
Keen reactions, weak body: Shun is a finely tuned machine at drawing his weapon and firing. In his more prideful moments, he likes to compare himself to a Japanese Tom Horn. However, he’s long neglected his natural demon strength in favor of speed and it shows when comparing himself to other demons.
Skills: Gunslinger: Shun is an expert sharpshooter and quick draw. There are few officers in the I.D.P.D that he’d consider better shots (begrudgingly, Yongzheng Huang is one such officer).
Baby face: It is easy to forget that some in the yokai community can be ageless. Shun, while never happy at his circumstances entirely, has learned to exploit it, and even emphasize it, when he desires to be overlooked as harmless.
Equipment:Catalyst ‘gun’: A modified Smith and Wesson Model 500. While the gun can no longer serve as a ‘traditional’ firearm, for the modern spellslinger there are few better examples of craftsmentship. The hammer has been removed, replaced with smooth steel etched with a series of runes which act as a ‘firing’ mechanism. When the trigger is pulled while the thumb is pressed onto the firing rune, a small explosive spell is detonated in the cylinder, propelling the ammo forward.
The cylinder is also unique tri-chamber design that does not rotate once the gun has been fired, instead requiring the user to manually rotate if they wish to change chambers. This was an intentional design choice, as it allows Shun to manually adjust the lethality of the weapon to suit his needs. He has color coded them for convenience.
Blue chamber: Runes form a rough bullet shape made of rubber. Use for non-lethal takedowns and is Shuns first line of defense. While the bullets cannot kill most yokai (save for rare circumstances), they can be an exceptionally painful deterrent.
Red chamber: Lethal force. Runes form a rough bullet shape made of copper equivalent to .500 S&W Magnum cartridge. There is nothing special about these rounds, beyond their capacity to do serious damage.
Gold Chamber: Lethal force^2. Runes form a rough bullet shape made of copper equivalent to .500 S&W Magnum cartridge, and an additional detonation spell is applied to trigger on contact with a target. Detonation is small, but shaped to cut into the target. Used entirely as a last resort, as the mana required to fire just one round is equivalent to five rounds in the red or blue chamber.
Beyond these modifications, the gun acts in much the same way as its non-magical counterpart, with an effective range of 200 yards,
Brief Backstory:Shun was born around the year 1942 to his mother Aiko, deep in the ending years of WW2 to an unknown father. Like many supernatural beings of the era, the war had displaced MANY of the long standing sanctuaries for their kind, and Shun spent his early years moving sporadically across country with his mother, looking for stable and safe living. His mother did her best to cheer him during these years, though there was only so much the elder demon woman could do besides teach him the basics of rune magic and hope for the best. While he has no confirmation of this, he believes that the pure anxiety of his childhood (despite his mothers best efforts) may have forced his demon abilities to activate at the young age of 14. A fact which he knows his mother, while in private moments, feels deeply guilty about.
He was 24 when the Imaginary District first opened its alleyways, and it was amongst the first taste of sedentary life he’d ever had. Not wanting any young yokai(or demon) to go through what he did, he volunteered quickly to join the (then) small police force, to help protect their relatively new home. While those near lawless days are a far off memory, Shun none the less continued to serve as a beat cop up until six years ago, when his brother (a person his mother had oh so playfully NEGLECTED TO MENTION FOR THE BETTER PART OF SEVENTEEN YEARS) came into his life. Annoyed that he’d never been told about his sheepy (in all the wrong ways) sibling, Shun quickly demanded to be raised to the rank of detective, intent on taking the accompanying raise and moving into his own apartment. As of now, he’s held his position for five years. Although he is still considered green by most of his coworkers, whose decades (if not centuries) of experience he struggles to compete with.
Likes: his family, taller women (which is most), police work, cherries.
Dislikes: taller men, joke about his height, threats, his family, pointless destruction, tomatoes.
