Pokemon: New World


"Pokemon: New World" exists within an alternate reality, three hundred years after the era of Ash Ketchum and his legacy. "Silph Co." and related companies have long since been absorbed by the conglomerate known only as "Poke Corp." This company now oversees all aspects of Pokemon technology. They produce the Poke Balls. They run the Poke Centers and Poke Marts. They have multiple television channels broadcasting gym battles, contests, reality T.V. shows, Pokemon related news, and much more. They are a true monopoly in the field of Pokemon. Lucky for us, they are quite benevolent (or so it would seem).

Life is much better now than it was in the past. Poverty has all but vanished from the face of the planet. That doesn't mean that money is no longer a factor. On the contrary, there are two types of currency still present in this world: Coins and Trainer Points. It is true that all basic housing, food, and other essentials are provided for free by the governments of the world, but in order to live beyond that easy survival mode you must choose one of two paths.

One, you can work a regular job and earn coins, which are used to purchase higher quality food, housing, and basically everything besides what you can buy with Trainer Points. Your second option is to register with "Poke Corp." as a trainer and receive your very own Pokedex. Trainer Points will be uploaded onto your Pokedex whenever they are earned. These trainer points are used to purchase items from Poke Marts, such as Poke Balls, Battle Items, and more. It is also important to note that simply having a Pokedex will grant you entry into practically all "Poke Corp" facilities, such as the Poke Marts themselves.

So what's it like to be a trainer? Surely, it's filled with peril at every turn, right? Not necessarily. While it is natural to come across abnormal situations in the Pokemon world, you do not have to choose a dangerous path. You can pursue beautiful Pokemon Contests. You can join a scientific research team. You can even wander around the world freely, sight seeing. There is no reason to be battling at every turn. However, the thrill of battle can be quite exhilarating. For those that enjoy this thrill, you can hone your skills in battle leagues, defeating gym after gym. Or you can take on exciting missions to protect innocent civilians and Pokemon in need.

The most important thing to remember here is that you are free. You can choose whatever path you like, do whatever it is your heart desires... just be careful. There are those in this world that are not interested in playing nice.

Central city is one of the oldest cities in all the land. Legend has it, this town is home to the first ever Pokemon master. It is also the home to one of the worlds best known retired trainers, Thomas Rikon. Now elderly, Thomas passes his time making a trinket known as the "Battle Amulet"; he does not sell this item, but instead, donates them to the local Poke Mart. The population of this city does not grow very quickly. It's more of a tourist stop than a place to actually settle down.

The cobblestone streets of Central City stretch out unto fields of beautiful flowers and farm land. These fields are alive with Grass type Pokemon. The city and its surrounding farm lands are always alive with Normal type Pokemon. There is a river that runs from the north, bringing in wonderful array of Water type Pokemon. Surrounding the city on both sides are volcanic mountains with thick forests at their base. The forests host a variety of Bug type Pokemon. On bright sunny days, Fire type Pokemon will emerge from mountain side caves to frolic in the light. Flying type Pokemon typically nest in mountain side trees.

It is rumored that the mythical Pokemon Shaymin protects this land, keeping it vibrant and beautiful. A hand full of people have claimed to have seen Shaymin, but many believe these sightings to be false. Still, the rumor mill works its magic, bringing in trainers from across the globe hoping for just a a sight of this adorable Pokemon.



Central City Poke Mart

Located in the heart of Central City, you will find the town's quaint Poke Mart. While the inside has been completely refurbished to match the sleek styling of Poke Corp, the outside retains it's historical value and cozy charm.




Central City Mission Board

In the town square, you will find a large double sided cork wall underneath a grand gazebo. On both sides of this wall there are stylized posters stapled against it. On each of these posters, you can see the many requests that the city's inhabitants have left for brave Pokemon trainers. Citizens can submit there mission postings to city hall, just across the street. Trainers can then tear these postings off the wall and bring them back to city hall in order to accept the mission at the front desk.

The sun shone bright the day that May left her home on her family's ranch for the busy metropolis of Central City. Ever since she could remember, the young girl had desired to start her journey as a pokemon trainer in this city. However, having only a bus ticket, a backpack, and one lonely pokeball (and no pokemon), even this hopeful thirteen year old knew it was going to be a rough start.

Now, baffled by the sheer size and beauty of the city, May stood in awe at her surroundings. She almost forgot - only for a moment - what she had come for. But where should she go? What should she do? She had been mentally preparing for this moment for what felt like forever and the poor girl was panicking on the spot. A small farm girl like her wasn't used to the big city. May looked around her but everyone seemed to be too busy with their own affairs, rushing off to whatever it was they had planned. They didn't have time to help her even if she asked.

Determined not to be discouraged by her sudden intimidation, May began to walk in the direction of a trail that a sign told her led to a small forest on the outskirts of town. She wasn't sure what she'd find there but she was an adventurous young girl and was ready to start her journey.

The sun shone brightly through the leaves over the path from through the woods to the river, and already the sounds of various bird, grass, and even water type Pokemon filled the air. In one of the trees near a lone hiker's position on the path, a Treeko leaps from one branch to another, playfully chasing another as they flitted back and forth. Overhead, he hears a Spearow call out as a small flock head to the fields to search for food and the hiker smiles. Look at all these Pokemon, so full of life. Gives me hope that I just might make something of myself here. On his hip was a single collapsed Pokeball, empty for the time being, but hopefully soon to have an occupant.

The hike lasted for several more minutes, with a couple of breaks to rest and drink some water thrown in to make it last. Finally, however, he found his way to the river, where already many water types were gleefully splashing about or sitting on the shore. Tommy, the hiker who'd made the trip found his usual spot and sat down, watching them all. However, after a few minutes, he found his gaze inexplicably drawn to a group of Froakie, all training and playing as the sun made the water glimmer. Perhaps he'd catch one of them for his first Pokemon and forge a powerful bond with it. But it wasn't in his nature to just catch one of them, he'd ask for a volunteer after a few minutes. For the time being, he just wanted to enjoy the sight.

Nick walked though the woods toward town, down a path that he'd only taken a few times before. He would walk the path more often, he thought, if only it wasn't an eight hour hike. But today he was in a rare mood. With a Poke Ball in one hand and a Pokedex in the other, the whole world seemed so different... and new!

He found himself looking at the Pokemon in a completely different light. He could catch so many of them, maybe that Spearow, Starly, or perhaps the Fletchling. One thing he knew for sure, his first Pokemon had to be a Flying type. But he wondered long an hard about how he could possibly make that final decision.

He opened his Pokedex every time that he saw a new Pokemon. Sure he'd met them all before, but hearing the Pokedex describe a Pokemon was too entertaining. The information provided was so minimal and statistically focused, nothing like the in depth knowledge he had due to practically living around them. But still, he was entertained to see what information every other trainer would be seeing!

While looking through the Pokedex, Nick saw something update. In the corner of the screen, a number went from 0 to 5. Curiously, he tapped on the number to learn more. Text boxes popped up, guiding him through the whole Trainer Point concept. His mother didn't say anything about Trainer Points when she gave him the Pokedex. Nick's mind then began to wonder... could he afford to buy anything at the Poke Mart in town with these Points?

His paced picked up as he had found a new goal. Get to the Poke Mart he told himself!

The meadow was peaceful, the only sounds the gentle rustling of wind in leaves, the trickling of the stream, the calls of Pokemon, and a soft melody carrying through the air. On a rock by the water sat a young woman, strumming a slow-paced yet bright rhythm on her guitar.

It wasn't any song in particular. Cici did this when she was thinking - improvising music helped her to plan, and right now, she had a lot to consider. What Pokemon to catch, where to go next, what her long-term goals as a trainer would be. So many options... The rhythm picked up, reflecting her growing excitement at the adventure that awaited her.

A squeaking noise at her feet pulled her from her thoughts. Looking down, she saw a Whismur bobbing to the song, as if dancing. She let out a laugh. "Hello, there," she said, switching to an even more energetic tempo. The Whismur started bouncing around. Cici's smile widened. Rather than just observing Pokemon, she couldn't wait to actually start befriending and training them.

By the time May had entered the forest and become engulfed by the sizable trees and shrubs, she was seeing all kinds of pokemon...but no fire types. But of course, she should have known she wouldn't find any fire types in a forest. She had been so eager to start her adventure that she had just jumped on the first thing she thought of. Now wandering around the Central City forest, May watched all sort of normal and grass pokemon frolick around her. But she only had one pokeball - which one should she catch? And how should she go about catching it? She had read that you should first weaken a pokemon before attempting to catch it but she had no pokemon to weaken it with.

Sitting against a tree to think, she heard the whistling and crooning of a pidgey who was perched on a branch above her head. Looking up at him, May meekly extended her hand out to him, pointing her finger out as a perch for him. "Come on, little guy," she coaxed him to come down. She'd seen lots of pidgeys before but never one that seemed to be so at peace. The pidgey ignored her invitation to perch on her finger but instead flew down from the branch and landed on the grass in front of her feet. It bobbed its head as it looked at her.

"Please come up on my finger, pidgey," she invited him once more as she slowly extended her hand once again. The pidgey was certainly hesitant and took its time deciding if it trusted May but it eventually fluttered onto her finger. The young girl giggled at her success. She sat by that tree with Pidgey for what seemed like hours, just talking to it and attempting to pet it. She hadn't even thought about catching it until much later. Would the pidgey get scared of her if she tried to catch it with her pokeball? She hoped not.

After some time watching the water types play, one of the Oshawatts noticed him and came over to where he was sitting, tugging on his pant leg to join them. "Oshawatt! Osha, osha!" Chuckling, Tommy stood and walked over with the little water type to the edge of the river, kneeling down as the other water types finally took notice of him. Of course, the Froakie immediately rushed over along with several other water types and the water war began. Ducking a water gun, Tommy splashes it's owner in return, surprising the Squirtle as he laughs. However, the young man quickly wishes he'd brought his water gun as being stuck by the river's edge put him at a disadvantage to the water types who could move on land. They quickly took to ducking and weaving and hiding behind things to avoid the young man's splashes of water, but it was still all fun and games.

After several minutes, with Tommy ending up pretty wet, one of the Froakie hopped up on his shoulder and took to aiding him, squirting water back at Tommy's assailants while he took to avoiding it. Eventually though, the Pokemon noticed the Pokeball on his hip and a curious Piplup pointed it out. "Piplup pip?" Following it's pointing flipper, he sighs and pulls it off his belt, allowing it to grow.

"Well, guess I couldn't put it off forever." Sitting down, the young man calls pops the ball open and closed several times before continuing. "You see, today I start my Pokemon journey, but I need to catch a Pokemon to become the first of my new companions and, well," he looks at the Froakie who was still on his shoulder and the others who had gathered around, "I was hoping one of the Froakie would join me. Not that I don't want to take all of you, but right now, I can only pick one." Immediately the Froakie on his shoulder jumped down an pointed at herself.

"Froakie, Froak. Froakie." Tommy chuckles and looks at the others, who nod vervently in agreement and Tommy smiles.

"Well alright then. Froakie, I choose you!" Standing, he throws the Pokeball at the little Froakie, watching it disappear into a beam of light. With a snap, the ball shuts and the center of the button glows red as it wiggles back and forth for several seconds before dinging that the Pokemon was caught. Retrieving it, Tommy smiles and looks at his Pokemon friends. "Well, I guess this is it. My journey's begun."

Leisy Takigawa


Leisy couldn’t help the grin on her face as she practically skipped down the stairs of the last of the city steps, finally planting both feet on the dirt path leading outside the city and into the forest for the first time. She’d always been warned to not step out of the city without adult supervision. It’d always been “too dangerous” with the wild pokemon roaming about, especially at night, but today was different. Today, Leisy had a pokeball.

I wonder what pokemon I’ll see? Leisy thought, thumbing the pokedex her parents had gotten for her. It was a custom-colored black-on-white model, and Leisy instantly fell in love with it. She was just about to put the pokedex away when a bush to her left rustled, causing her to jump. Oh my—

A caterpie crawled out unceremoniously from under the bush, slowly inching its way across the path. Leisy’s eyes widened, and she slowly turned and faced the pokemon, opening her pokedex.

Ding! Caterpie, the Worm Pokémon. To repel enemies, Caterpie releases an unpleasant odor from its red antenna. It molts several times while growing.


By the time Leisy looked back down to where the green and yellow caterpillar had been, it was gone. She groaned internally. Of course it’s gone! The pokedex is set to read every entry out loud. Let’s see, Leisy thought, scrolling through the white-colored device’s menu. Done. Voice options off. The girl frowned, looking at the bushes through which the caterpie had presumably left. I think I ought to invest in a camera instead.

Shrugging, the black-haired girl continued along the path down towards the deeper area of the forest. She’d have time to find the right pokemon—a pokemon that she felt a kindred spirit with. One that spoke to her without a single word exchanged between them.

A sphere, half red and half white, with a little black band in between, was something very small and insignificant from a practical standpoint. Sure, Olivie had seen them all her life, as well as the staggering varieties of creatures with which they were associated, but for nineteen years the entire concept of training Pokemon never garnered from her a second thought. For too long, she knew, she'd concerned herself entirely with people—what they thought of her, in particular. More than anything, Olivie celebrated the end of that chapter in her life. All the same, she'd never realized exactly what she was missing until, from a birthday present given to her the evening of the day before last, she opened a measly little ball. Sitting now on a wooden bench just outside Central City's signature locale Delphine's Diner, she remember having been acutely puzzled as to just why her parents gave her, of all things, a Pokeball.

What followed, Olivie thought with a smile, had been an experience that had most likely ingrained itself on her mind as an irreplaceable memory. Her father, a quality assurance worker at a local corporation involved with Pokemon, explained his gift by telling her a story from his own youth, one never imparted to her before. Though it lasted more than an hour, Olivie found herself enthralled. The tale of a young man full of courage and ambition, traveling the world with a Pokemon friend by his side, seemed like something straight out of a story book. Her parents finished by talking about her, and what she'd been through over the last few years. As luck would have it, the very people she in her dark moments insisted would never understand her turned out to understand her even better than she did herself. Olivie's heart had swelled with joy as her parents told her how proud they were that she'd managed to sort out her issues and discover her identity. Recalling from their daughter's youth how much she treasured friends, they told her that the little ball in her hand would be the ticket to making friends to last her whole lifetime. In that moment, looking at the Pokeball, Olivie understood how much that measly object really meant.

The sound of a bell jarred Olivie from her reverie with a start. On her left side, the customer leaving Delphine's Diner gave her a quizzical look, hoping that he didn't scare her. Rather than a reassuring smile, he earned from the sitting girl a glare with one corner of her mouth downturned, her teeth together but barely showing, and her eyes half closed. “What're you looking at?” Faced with the expression of a person pissed and being disturbed, the man did not hesitate in continuing on his way. After watching him recede for a moment, Olivie stood up. After submitting her notice of quitting to the diner, she'd parked herself here to collect her thoughts. Now, after reliving the defining event of her birthday night, she felt more invigorated than ever to get started. She allowed herself one moment to adjust her hair, then started to walk.

Looking with the eyes of a would-be Pokemon trainer turned up facets of Central City she'd never really seen before. Practically everywhere she looked she could find a Pidove or two, picking at some scraps or waiting expectantly around picnic tables or cafes' outdoor seating. Olivie passed by at least two dozen and was nearing the river that ran south through the town's middle before she suddenly remembered the little device she'd gone out and bought with her birthday money: a Pokedex. Pulling it off her item band, she snapped the thing open. An older model, it did not sport any holographic interfaces or super-advanced displays, but it would do the job. Tickles ran down her spine as the Pokedex, aimed at a fat Pidove perched on a length metal rail along the edge of the river, dutifully recited, ”Pidove, the Tiny Pidgeon Pokemon. These Pokémon live in cities. They are accustomed to people. Flocks often gather in parks and plazas. This very forgetful Pokémon will wait for a new order from its Trainer even though it already has one.”

Following the explanation, Olivie found herself looking at the bird in a new light: one that stank. ”Not just stupid-looking, it's actually a bad Pokemon. Forget catching one of those,” she sneered. Turning left, she started walking north along the river, leaving the Pidove none the wiser. As she walked, she glanced into the water. A small school of ugly brown fish with pink lips swam by, causing Olivie to furrow her brown. ”Pff. I'm not even gonna think twice about any lame-looking Pokemon.” Crossing her arms beneath her chest, she continued her northward trek with a bored expression on her face. Perhaps better candidates could be found outside of town.

Leisy Takigawa


Leisy walked along the path, eyes trained on the dirt path in front of her. It’d been hours since she’d stepped foot out of the city, and she still hadn’t seen anything other than that damned caterpie. I don’t suppose the pokemon all collectively decided to shun me? Leisy thought, amused by the thought. That’s impossible, right?

While she hadn’t seen any pokemon with her eyes, Leisy had heard plenty of rustling bushes scattering rocks to know that pokemon were indeed nearby. Leisy sighed as she checked her watch—almost two thirty in the afternoon—and decided to stop by a walnut tree near the edge of the road. She leaned against the tree, enjoying the cool shade and the only slightly detectable breeze. I’d almost forgotten how hot Central City can get sometimes, Leisy thought with a grin, shedding her thin jacket and pulling a water bottle out from her bag.

Savoring the not-so-cold liquid, Leisy wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, taking a moment to survey her surroundings. After she’d stopped moving around so much, Leisy realized that life suddenly returned to the previously quiet forest. Bird pokemon could be heard singing in the trees, jumping from branch to branch as their chirps filled the air. The bushes rustled lightly here and there, and pokemon started appearing. Purple mouse-like pokemon scrambled out from the undergrowth, whiskers twitching as they sniffed around for stray berries or nuts. Black and white bird pokemon flew down from the trees, calling to each other merrily as they pecked around for stray seeds as the little tuft on their head swayed with every movement. A group of brown bunny pokemon with cotton ball features hopped out from a bush some distance from the tree against which Leisy was leaning, playfully cooing at each other as their floppy ears flapped with every hop. A magnificent rabbit followed in their midst, its light cotton ears and feet fluffy and beautiful as it gracefully trailed behind the group of rowdy young pokemon.

Leisy sucked in a breath at the sight of the larger pokemon looking kindly onto what Leisy could only assume was her litter, wishing now more than ever that she had a camera. The next town I find, I’ll get one, Leisy thought. Even if I have to break my promise and phone Mom and Dad. Just this once, just for a camera. It’s absolutely essential.

Slowly maneuvering her hand to her back pocket to retrieve her pokedex, Leisy crossed her fingers in her head in hopes that the family of rabbit pokemon wouldn’t move away too quickly. Just as she was about to open the slim white device, a rustle of leaves overhead alerted Leisy to the fact that she was being watched. Looking up, the girl met the yellow-tipped eyes of a orange-hooded bird with a stunning black-and-white plumage on its tail. Leisy stared in amazed wonder at the bird as it watched her, silent and unmoving on its perch.

Please don’t leave either, Leisy thought, raising her pokedex to the bird on the branch. I’ll give up the on all the whiskered mice, the white-faced birds, and fluffy rabbits if you stay still on your branch. Just for a minute--this minute.

The Whismur gave more of those barely-audible, yet happy cries, and jumped about as Cici kept playing. Figuring out what kind of music got the best reaction, the trainer-to-be varied her rhythm several times. This energetic Pokemon seemed to prefer faster songs. Cici strummed her way through one that the few crowds she'd played to had particularly liked. The song brought back memories of old friends and happy times, of shouts and arguments, of faces she knew well yet were somehow like those of strangers. Her voice wavered as she sang the familiar lyrics.

She couldn't stay stuck in the past, she reminded herself. This was a new start.

Finishing the song and putting away her guitar, she took one of her new items, her Pokedex, and tried it out. "Whismur, the Whisper Pokemon," it informed her. "Usually, its cries are like quiet murmurs. If frightened, it shrieks at the same volume as a jet plane."

Looking up at her, the Whismur let out more murmurs, plaintive ones this time. It pointed one of its stubby arms at the guitar. "You want to hear more?" Taking the guitar from the case, Cici started strumming again.

She thought of the other item she'd received besides the Pokedex - one Pokeball, one chance to catch her starter. Could this Whismur be the first to accompany her on her journey? "Hey," she said. "Want to come along with me?" She stopped playing again, took out the Pokeball and waited for the Pokemon's reaction, half-expecting it to run away. Instead, the Whismur slowly approached and tapped at the Pokeball. The capsule opened, and in a burst of light, the Whismur disappeared into it.

Cici stared at the Pokeball for a few moments. That had been much easier than she'd thought. "I... I did it," she muttered. "I did it!"

Leisy stared in amazement as an image of the orange-hooded bird appeared on the device in her hands.

Fletchling, the Tiny Robin Pokémon. Although Fletchling's chirp is quite beautiful to hear, it is relentlessly tough with those who enter its territory


Fletchling. So that’s what he’s called, Leisy thought, raising her eyes to the bird pokemon who was still peering down at her with curious eyes. Leisy hesitated before offering the bird a gentle smile, unsure of what to do. She had no pokemon, no method of “weakening” the Fletchling, but Leisy wouldn’t have wanted to do that anyways.

"You’re just curious, aren’t you?” Leisy whispered, looking up at the Fletchling. “You’re just taking a break from flying to watch the clueless human blundering around the forest like an idiot. It really did take a long time for me to figure out that the best way to find pokemon is to stop trying to find them.” Leisy sighed, looking back around her at the forest full of pokemon. “I guess the key is to stay off the path and be a part of the forest.”

Straightening, Leisy stretched a her arms and adjusted the straps of her bag, giving the bird in the tree a little wave. “I’ll be going now, Fletchling. I wanna get to the main river before it gets dark—people say you can find water pokemon there, and I can’t wait to see some.”

Leisy set off again, but she went through the forest this time. Even though she’d been wearing all her hiking gear, it hadn’t occurred to her to actually take the route through the undergrowth. Although the pokemon still scattered as she passed, Leisy seemed to pose less of a threat to them now that she was traveling through their terrain, clueless and naive as she rustled bushes and crunched leaves below her feet. Every one of her moves was transmitted throughout the woods, and the pokemon seemed to understand that this girl, however noisy, wasn’t dangerous.

By the time Leisy heard the soft gurgling of the river, she was completely drained. A rustle in the trees above her head alerted Leisy to a pokemon’s presence. Looking up, she saw the familiar Fletchling staring at her pensively. Leisy flashed the bird a smile, rifling through her bag for a few seconds before producing a granola bar. “Here you go,” Leisy said, breaking off a piece of the bar for the pokemon. ”It’s dried cereal stuck together with honey—nothing dangerous, promise,” Leisy joked, placing the piece of granola on a rock before retreating back to the boulder she left her bag on.

After a few moments, the Fletchling flew down to the boulder, pecking experimentally at the block of dried cereal grains. He seemed to like it, and soon enough the piece of granola was gone. A little surprised that the pokemon had actually eaten the granola, Leisy hesitated before speaking up again. ”Do you want the rest of it as well?”

Leisy regretted it as soon as the words left her mouth. It was already impressive enough that she’d gotten a wild pokemon to eat the food she gave him, but now she wanted to feed him more? Leisy had all but forgotten about the pokemon as she fretted about how spoiled she was acting, but the sound of wingbeats near her ear shocked her back to earth as the Fletchling landed on her shoulder, waiting patiently.

”Wha—” Leisy squeaked in surprise, nearly tripping as she righted her balance in accordance to the new weight on her shoulder. After recovering, Leisy giggled a little before breaking off another piece of granola and offering it to the bird pokemon. ”Here you go,” Leisy said, smiling at the Fletchling as he finished off the bar.

Turning slowly around as to not disturb the contented robin, Leisy picked up her bag, her eyes catching on a flash of red and white in the satchel. The girl retrieved the pokeball from her bag, staring at its smooth, red surface thoughtfully. ”Say, Fletchling, what do you think about coming with me on a journey?”

The Fletchling cocked his head for a moment in thought before chattering lightly and ruffling his feathers, pleased. Leisy hesitated before putting the pokeball before the Fletchling that promptly pecked the white button, releasing the red light that sucked the bird pokemon into the ball. Almost dropping the pokeball in shock, Leisy made a dive that landed her on the ground, the pokeball nestled in her arms.

“Bidein,” Leisy said, bringing the red capsule up to eye level. “I’m going to call you Bidein.”

The pokeball glowed red with contentment.

Could it really be that this many Pokemon existed in Central City all this time? Nearly every minute of the hour Olivie spent prowling the city found her asking herself that question again. Everywhere she looked, whether up or down, in an ally or on the street, she discovered all sorts of critters. Pidoves dominated the city's skyspace, but other birds sat on posts, signs, and sidewalk trees as well. When Olivie spotted a bizarre pink thing nestled in the crook of a streetside oak, she did a double take before pulling out her Pokedex. “Hoppip, the Cottonweed Pokemon,” it dutifully informed her, not at all alleviating the grimace on her face. “This Pokémon drifts and floats with the wind. If it senses the approach of strong winds, Hoppip links its leaves with other Hoppip to prepare against being blown away.” Not once did it mentioned why the thing looked so stupid. After glaring for a few more moments at the oblivious little beast to make sure it knew its place, Olivie continued on her way.

The end of this exploratory hour, however, brought with it a new problem. As it was wont to do, her back began to ache. It began as a totally forgettable sensation but progressed into the territory of irritation before too long. Reaching behind with her unsleeved right arm to try and rub between her shoulderblades, Olivie found herself looking at the sky. A hint of evening permeated the heavens. ”Have I really just been wandering around this whole time? I shoulda been out of town thirty minutes ago.” Her eyes fell on the river, along which she'd been more or less making her path, and they followed its course northward. With a little surprise she realized that the informal edge of Central City lay only a hundred meters or so ahead. ”Oh. Lucky break, I guess. This ache's a real pain in the ass, though...” She took a quick look around and saw nobody. Sighing, Olivie leaned forward onto the riverside railing to rest. Her bust lay atop the metal, relieving momentarily the weight always straining her back. As a breeze from the north rustled her hair, she stared at the light playing across the river water. Beneath the surface, one of the ugly squirts she'd found out were called Feebas stared back at her. Odd that this normally social fish would be alone when the river seemed chock-full of the miserable things. Perhaps it, too enjoyed a moment out of the public eye to rest. The thought brought a small, secret smile to Olivie's face. In that instant she did not at all suit the image of the no-nonsense, thickheaded thug she strove to cultivate.

“H-hello?”

Just like that, the private moment of tranquility shattered. The sudden voice scared Olivie badly, but when she whirled around, her face was a mask of rage. The very sight of it caused the voice's owner to flinch visibly. Plainly he'd been meaning to say something else, but for the moment he'd been stunned into silence. Feeling as though she recognized him, Olivie narrowed her eyes. As far as she could tell, he'd been a schoolmate of hers throughout highschool. He'd been in a disproportionate number of her classes, but he'd never spoken to her. This came as no surprise; he fit the bill of a nerdy introvert. Sporting large, rectangular glasses with black rims, a thin physique, wavy platinum blonde hair, a green button-up shirt, black track pants with a green stripes, a triangular backpack, and a wool beanie, he did not exactly stand out. ”Hell's your problem?” Olivie demanded, eyes aflame. ”Sneaking up on someone like that is just asking for a sock in the jaw!”

Clearly distressed, the boy took a step back, his hands held up placatingly. “I'm...I'm sorry! I didn't mean to! It's just, I, I, thought I'd, um, tell you something. Just happened to, to see you, and something crossed my mind. I've actually, uh, known for a while, but I never got the...got the chance to let you know. You know?”

”Hmph.” Olivie wore a scowl, but on the inside, she was giggling. He's so awkward! Like a puppy caught tearing up toilet paper or something. Crossing her arms beneath her chest again as a shelf to ward away a resurgence of pain, she told him, ”Well, I'm waiting. Spit it out already!”

A glimmer of hope appeared behind those spectacles. Though still seeming a little shaken by Olivie's manner, the boy worked up the courage to say, ”Well, see...gosh, it's so hard to say. I'm sure you get this a lot, but you're like a celebrity. Or were, until a little while ago. People, um.” He withered slightly under Olivie's gaze, which told him to get to the point. ”People are drawn to you, you know? But I always felt bad for you. So many people wanted the glamour of being your friend that they pretty much just used you without caring about how you felt. At least, that's how I saw it. I never knew why you kept just letting them. The kids who didn't want to cozy up to you for some reason or another would always say mean things about you to make themselves look better, but you never stood up for yourself. Then, last year, you started acting different and everybody left you alone. I figured you were tired of people walking all over you. I totally respect you for that. Actually, I've always...um, respected you.” He took a deep breath. ”What I'm trying to say is...I have my own issues, but seeing you is like seeing sunshine after a rainy day. It inspired me to stand up for myself, too. I don't expect that you'd think twice about me, but all the same, if I never see you again, I thought...I thought I'd let you k-know. No matter what, I think you're a cool person, and I like you.”

A quiet moment passed. A pin dropping could be heard while the boy nervously withstood the girl's scowl. Finally, Olivie manifested a look equal parts derisive and incredulous. ”Hmmmm?” The word hung in the air. Olivie put a hand to her ear in grandiose fashion, as if to better hear him and decipher what he said. ”Like me? Respect me? Sunshine? What's with all that crap? You're dumber than the broad side of a barn if you think you're bein' cool. Listen, kid. I beat the snot out of people that annoy me. You lookin' for a quick trip to the hospital?” She cracked her knuckles, though unfortunately no sound came out. Lame...

”No! Uh, heheh.” Rubbing the back of his head, the boy gave a short, anxious laugh. At the same time, though he seemed oddly relieved. In his head, a dreaded question had, for better or worse, been answered. ”I thought as much, anyway. I'll leave you alone, I promise. Just thought I'd tell you how I felt.” He took another step back and started to turn around, pausing only for a second halfway. ”...See ya.”

Olivie watched him go, wearing an amusing expression. Before he disappeared behind a building, she cleared her throat and called, ”Hey, you! What's your name? I wanna think of something to call you.”

The boy froze, then looked over his shoulder with a barely-restrained look of hope, not daring to believe. ”Oh. Sure. My name's Bernard.”

His response earned a guffaw of laughter. Grinning viciously, Olivie said, ”Perfect! In that case, I'm callin' you 'Barnie'! I'm goin' to become a Pokemon trainer, you know. If you've got Pokemon, I wanna wipe the floor with your dumbass next time we meet, Barnie! Now, scram!” The next moment Bernard was gone, but unbeknownst to either of them, both nineteen-year-olds had small smiles on their faces. Looking over the riverside railing, Olivie found that the Feebas hadn't moved. ”That kid. What a dork,” she told it, and watched it burble in response. Then she continued on her way, and in only a few moments later stepped out of Central City onto fresh green grass.

Cici headed back towards the town centre with a new spring in her step, humming to herself, the guitar on her back. Well, the spring was more like a stomp, her scuffed boots clunking against the path, but she'd never felt quite so light and carefree. Her first Pokemon... She had her first Pokemon already. The occupied Pokeball was now clipped to her belt, hopefully soon to be accompanied by others. In her hand was the Pokedex her mother had given her. Tapping buttons, she watched a number come up on the screen.

Six Trainer Points. She thought over what she'd been told. Apparently, these points would slowly generate over time, serving as currency for PokeCorp items. Did she already have enough for anything new? It couldn't hurt to find out.

As she made her way back through the meadow, she pointed her Pokedex at the various Pokemon that filled the area. A Wurmple munching on leaves. A Poliwag leaping around in the water. A flock of Pidgey flying and squawking overhead. A Snivy curled up under a tree, dozing. She eagerly took in every piece of information, listening for any sound, looking out for any movement - and failing to notice the sign post right in front of her.

"Ow!" Stumbling back, she looked up. Well, here she was, back in the city. She put the Pokedex back in her bag and wandered around the streets, watching where she was going this time, until she reached the Pokemart.

It turned out she did indeed have enough for an item, either a Potion or a Pokeball. The choice was easy. She'd need potions if she was going to battle later, but for now... Once she'd spent her points, she left the shop, humming again as she put away her second Pokeball.

After catching the Froakie, Tommy let her out so she could play with her friends some more before they left while he sat back and popped open his trumpet case, pulling the silver colored instrument out and putting in the mouth piece. He did a couple of warm up scales, the sound echoing through the forest, before he set into a real song. It was a touch upbeat, but he felt it fit and so he played, letting the music echo through the forest as the water Pokemon gathered around him and several flying and grass types as well. He didn't often play out here, as he usually used it to get music ideas, but when he did, it drew Pokemon from all over that could hear him.

When he finished, he realized that the sun was beginning to set and, with a sigh, placed his trumpet back into the case and turned as his Froakie joined him. "Well, I guess this is it. I plan to set out for one of the other towns tomorrow, but I promise to come by before I leave, alright?" A chorus of different sounds met him and he smiled before turning to the Froakie. "There's just one more thing to do, and that's name you. If that's OK?" She nodded and waited while Tommy thought. He wanted a name that described her and their friendship. Finally, he decided on one that fit. "How about Amica? Something unique for the two of us."

After a moment of thought on her part, the Froakie nodded. "Froakie." Nodding, Tommy stood with his case slung across his shoulder and hanging from his hip as he pulled Amica's pokeball from his belt.

"Alright then, time to go. Amica, return." A red beam shot out from the button and his first Pokemon returned. With a sigh, he shrinks the ball and places it back on his belt. "Remember everyone, we'll be back tomorrow, alright?" After the chorus subsided, all the Pokemon returned to their business as Tommy headed back to town, humming to himself as he walked. With in considerably less time than it had taken him to reach his riverside spot, he could see town. Remembering the red and dark green pokedex he'd bought a couple days before, he fished it out and looked through it, spotting his trainer points. "Lets see, if I remember correctly, I can use those for pokemart purchases, right?" He tapped on the icon and got a tutorial, which both confirmed his memory and told him some new things. With a nod, he heads to one of the sandwich shops and buys his regular and a pokemon specific one before sitting outside to eat, letting Amica out and giving her hers, the pair set to eating their food happily.

After Leisy had let the new pokemon she'd caught out, she’d taken the liberty to take a walk along the stream with her pokedex out. Orange otter pokemon splashed around in the stream alongside horned red-and-white goldfish. Leisy’s pokedex informed her that the pokemon were named Buizel and Goldeen respectively, noting little quirks about the two species that she absorbed greedily.

Water pokemon are so playful, Leisy thought as she stared at the pokemon swirling around in place and performing tricks for each other underwater. But, Bidein’s great too, the girl thought, looking at the bird pokemon through the corner of her eye. He was quiet and careful—the perfect travel companion.

As she walked, Leisy realized that Bidein’s weight on her shoulder had become natural. The robin weighed barely anything compared to the pokemon her parents had owned. The family Skitty was the smallest of the bunch, but even the cat weighed a significant amount more than the Fletchling that was currently preening itself on Leisy’s shoulders.

”Do you have anywhere you want to go?” Leisy asked the pokemon on her shoulder. Bidein ruffled his feathers and settled itself down on her shoulder, which Leisy took to be a no. The girl paused to give the Fletchling a look. ”No friends in the woods you want to say ‘bye’ to?”

The robin gave his feathers another puff of no, and Leisy didn’t push it.

”Let’s drop by Central City to get some supplies before heading out to the mountains then,” Leisy said. ”It'll be a long walk, but I need more supplies before I can start up the mountain.”

The sound of a beak chattering through the dark told Leisy the bird pokemon agreed.

A short foray into the wild turned up more than a few Pokemon, but Olivie never once got the impression that she saw all of Central City's vibrant green outskirts had to offer. Starting with the river, she watched clusters of frogs and otters, some playing together, others on the prowl for food. Very quickly, she learned that very few Pokemon seemed comfortable being in proximity to her, which -thought it made her quest more difficult- she could understand. After all, unlike the habituated city Pokemon like Pidove, which had grown bold enough to sit on the backs of chairs opposite people eating on their own, these creatures regarded practically anything with suspicion. Searching for a vantage point, Olivie located a boulder sitting in the riverside meadow's middle, clambered up its side, and lay down on her stomach with her fists holding up her head and her bosom squished against the hard surface. Ahh...relief. Mere moments after she ceased to move, sinking into the scenery, she could suddenly see much more. By the water that sparkled brilliantly in the gathering evening sky, she spotted a blue frog creep up on an oblivious caterpillar and snap it up with its tongue. The sight awoke an inkling of surprise in her; the notion just never occurred to her that the world of Pokemon held predator-prey dynamics of her own. She produced her Pokedex and logged the aqua-colored amphibian, though she didn't feel like making a disturbance by having the device read about the 'Froakie' aloud. Truly, she found herself fascinated.

No smog fouled up Central City's skylines, trash seldom wandered from its cans, and very few grimy backalleys could be found, but when Olivie closed her eyes and breathed in deeply, the air felt remarkably clear and free. Very soon, the sun would begin to set. Giving a sigh, Olivie roused herself and began navigating down the boulder. To begin her journey tomorrow, she needed to commit to getting a Pokemon tonight. Relaxing could wait until later. As she moved through the grass, stopping at each bush like a ship on an island-hopping campaign, she found herself thinking about traveling. Without any kind of vehicle, the ordeal that lay ahead of her sounded like a whole lot of walking. Just the thought of walking for miles and miles every day made the brunette's heart hurt. There's got to be an easier way... With an inward groan, she stooped over another bush.

“Cha?”

Startled, Olivie instinctively stepped back, but instantly she regretted it. What she did just now fit the old Olivie to a 'T', but it didn't suit her new self at all. Noticing this caused anger to boil within her, and with face already twisted into a scowl she peered underneath the bush. Standing just a foot in front of her, rigid as a statue, was a little brown Pokemon with a red nose, beady eyes, and huge buck teeth. Dumpy, boring, and not at all sweet-looking, it was an animal that nobody would think twice about having as a pet. Olivie stared at it, eyes hard and mouth slightly open in a critical, and she murmured, ”This angry little beast...I love it. I'll take you.” She reached out to touch it and, with zero hesitation, the Bidoof opened its mouth and chomped down on her fingers.

”Urgh!” Olivie grunted, standing back up to her full height. Determined to protect its territory, the Bidoof did not let go, instead dangling from her hand as the girl held her arm up. ”Little fight in you, huh? Good. The trainer tip I got from the 'dex said to weaken Pokemon before catching them. Now, how'm I gonna do that and pay you back for biting me? Huh!?” As she yelled, Olivie drove a right cross right into the stubborn thing's belly with furious force.

The Bidoof didn't just let go—it flew. With a low-pitched grumbling noise it hurtled through the air to land in the grass, tumbling on impact. Coughing badly, it twisted around to watch Olivie approach. By the time she drew within four feet of the Bidoof, she'd already slipped her fighting gloves on. A nasty grin dominated her features, and upon seeing it, the Bidoof bared its teeth and snarled. By gnashing its teeth together, it generated what appeared to be shockwaves, and when it let out an enraged chatter the jolt of electricity surged forth. Stepping to the side, Olivie attempted to dodge her target's Shock Wave and closed the distance, but the tiny bit of lightning arced toward her in midair and zapped her. Ignoring what little discomfort the weak attack brought, she disregarded her gloves to throw out a low kick that beaned the Bidoof's head from the side, the force of which sent it rolling about a foot into the grass. This time it didn't get up, only grumbling weakly, and when it blearily looked up it found Olivie crouching above it. It chattered, its teeth bared again to sink its fangs into her ankle, but before it could launch the attack a red and white shape zoomed toward it. Olivie smacked the Bidoof with a Pokeball to stun it, and before the critter could recover it had already vanished into the capsule. It barely struggled, and a moment later a click signaled a successful catch.

Breathing lightly, Olivie stood back up. Her ferocious glare melted away. Without hesitation she opened the Pokeball, causing the haggard Bidoof to appear in the air. She caught it in her arms, gently as she could, and squeezed it against her chest in a hug. ”You're mine now, buddy,” she told the confused creature, ”Two cuties with killer fightin' spirit. Together, we're gonna be the strongest team there is. I'm gonna take you to a Pokemon Center to get you healed up, tough guy. I kicked your ass this time, and I'm not sorry, but I hope we can be friends even if we use a little tough love.” So saying, she made her way back toward Central City as the shadows grew longer and the sky blossomed into a gorgeous and fortuitous orange. In her arms, the Bidoof didn't have the energy to struggle, but somehow it felt no fear. Only moments ago Olivie had been battering it left and right, but now she cradled it like a baby, and it found comfort in her words. It closed its eyes to block out the dazzling rays of the half-gone sun, and nestled closer to its trainer.

The city's streetlights came on just after Olivie reentered the town. Not wanting to get lost, she retraced her earlier path alongside the river. Unfortunately, she absolutely did not know where in the city a Pokemon Center might be. To that end, she kept an eye out for other trainers to ask, and after a few minutes of looking zeroed in on a likely-looking dude seated at a riverside sandwich shop. Holding her now sleeping Bidoof close, she stopped about two feet away from his table, putting most of her weight on one leg. ”Hey, you.” With him sitting down, she could look down on him imperiously. ”You gonna tell me where a Pokemon Center is, or what?” Not exactly the most cooperation-inducing request, but she hoped it would serve. When faced with an uncouth demand, an ordinary person would answer quickly and brusquely to minimize interaction. From this guy, Olivie predicted just such a response.

Halfway through their trek back to Central City, Leisy opened another granola bar, breaking half off for Bridein.

”Here you go, Bridein,” the girl said, holding the piece out for the robin that was resting on her shoulder. Bridein took it, cocking his head inquiringly as he held it under a foot. Leisy laughed, pulling another foiled bar out from her bag. "I've got plenty, Bridein. Dein. Dei," Leisy said, testing the name on her tongue as she looked at the Fletchling. "How do you like 'Dei' for a nickname?"

Bridein gave his feathers a ruffle that puffed them out, making him look like a fluffy hedgehog. Leisy laughed.

"Let's get going then, Dei," she said, fixing the backpack's straps on her shoulder as the bird clung onto her. "I can't wait for you to see Central City."

The trek took a few hours, but Bridein took her mind off the time, filling the silence with quiet coos and clicks. The Fletchling was rarely quiet with Leisy alone, but when other pokemon approached he went silent, eyeing them warily out of the corner of his eye. His opinions of various pokemon were expressed through his own language: short, succinct chatters for approval and long, slow ones for dislike. A ruffle of his feathers meant that he either didn't like or wasn't familiar with the pokemon species. This he reserved for the odd bagworm pokemon—Burmy, according to Leisy’s pokedex—that dropped out of the trees suddenly, surprising both Bridein and Leisy as it dangled innocently on a string, staring at the pair with its unblinking, yellow eyes.

Soon enough, Leisy could make out the tips of the city over the treetops, and she was both excited and elated to be returning. ”Look Bridein! That’s Central City’s Poke Corp building. It’s the biggest in the area, and people often travel from far away to buy supplies,” Leisy explained excitedly to her pokemon. The Fletchling studied the big glass-paned building with narrowed eyes. ”You wanna go in and see it?”

Bridein chattered his beak, and Leisy grinned. ”Let’s hurry up then!” she told her pokemon enthusiastically as she broke into a run. The Fletchling lost his balance on her shoulder for a moment before recovering, shooting off from his perch and flying at a comfortable height over Leisy’s head. The girl looked up to the pokemon with a grin.”Race you there!”

Bridein was unimpressed by his trainer’s below-pokemon-average running speed, but he deigned to humor her, flying at a slow pace to act as if she had a chance.

The temperature had cooled down, and the few clouds overhead had taken on a pink-orange tinge. There was so much Cici still wanted to do, but some things would have to wait until tomorrow. Right now, it was probably a good idea to relax, and spend time with her new friend.

She released the Whismur from the Pokeball and sat down on a nearby bench, searching through her bag for the sandwiches she'd made earlier, as well as the Pokefood she'd bought in preparation for the journey. She softly sang to herself, aiding her concentration as she wondered something. What would she name this Pokemon?

The Whismur sang along, quietly at first, but his voice grew louder and louder. Wincing, Cici put her hands over her ears. "Wow... I think I'm gonna need my earplugs around you," she laughed. The Pokemon stopped singing, letting out his usual murmur. "Well," she said, digging out the sandwich and the Pokefood, "I know what to call you. How about Forte?" The musical instruction seemed to fit pretty well as a name. Squeaking in agreement, the Whismur started munching on the snacks.

The moment he'd finished eating, Forte turned around, ear flaps slightly raised, looking over. Something, or someone, had caught his attention. He pattered over to where a young man sat with a Froakie. A girl in sports clothes, with quite the attitude by the look of it, stood over the boy, demanding directions from him. "Hey, come back!" Cici called, picking up her bag and running after her new Pokemon. The Whismur didn't listen, and started playing with the Froakie instead.

”Hm,” Leisy hummed, examining the shelves of merchandise. A colorful array of bottles and containers lined shelves of the Pokecorp store, but Leisy was unfamiliar with it all. Burn heal, Leisy read off the label of a green spray bottle. A spray-type medicine. It heals a single Pokémon that is suffering from a burn. The girl pursed her lips, frowning. Is this usable for humans?

Setting the bottle down, Leisy made her way over to the counter where a cheery clerk in a blue uniform apron greeted her. “What can I do for you today?” he asked, flourishing his hand over his wares. “See anything you’d like?”

”I’m actually at a loss for what to get,” Leisy admitted, flashing the man a awkward smile. ”Any pointers? I’m heading to the mountains for the first time, and I only have one pokemon.”

”Well if you only have one pokemon, you should probably get a pokeball,” the pokemart worker said, pointing to the red-and-white capsules in the shelves behind him. ”They’re five trainer points each.”

”Trainer points?” Leisy echoed, confused. The clerk gave the girl a friendly smile.

“It’s the currency popularized by Poke Corp. Whenever you see new pokemon, catch pokemon, or defeat wild pokemon, your pokedex will automatically add points to your account,” the man explained, pointing to a list of items for sale hanging on the wall behind him. “Here’s the items that the Poke Corp is only selling for trainer points. All other items are sold for regular currency, so even the richest individuals can only get so far as a trainer if they don’t do any training themselves,” the pokemart worker explained. “So, what about that pokeball?”

”That’s perfect,” Leisy said, handing over her pokedex. The man did the necessary button-pressing before handing Leisy her pokeball with a smile.

“Use responsibly,” the man said, smiling at her.

”Thank you,” Leisy said, receiving the yellow bottle with wide eyes. Waving goodbye to the clerk as she exited the pokemart, Leisy suppressed a wave of giddiness. She had her second pokeball!
