Instead of a 'mumble, grumble's which can easily be seen as simply mocking a person more. Because I saw no amount of sorryness in that line.

Only John being his usual bigotry ass, saying - 'mumble, grumble'. Try that line on a Commissar see what happens.

You didn't even wrote out any indication that this was his way of being sorry. All I saw was him mocking her. A little humilty wouldn't kill someone, in his case it might save his bacon.

But if you have appeared as an ass, and do no indication to fix it - then people are going to see him, as a jackass.

Well, he will require more than a mumble - to show he isn't a jackass, after acting like one.

The first time I read his reply, I honestly believed he was mocking Meris, again. Only in the second reading and you pointing it out, did I spot some semblance of an apology and a bare one at that.

If you want him to play his jackass part have him show the reason behind it - instead of being dick-to-all.

A maybe one-time non-ass speech about why he is like that. You can't get away with that crap alone, or without someone watching his back.

Otherwise he will be just remembered as that crazy-nutjob and nobody around to defend him. In an army that executes people for the minute infractions.

That's not how I see it, although if you want to keep your old reply go ahead I suppose. The way I see it, mumbling is a sign of humbling, kind of like peasants dropping to their knees to some lord bastard.

But since we're cut off I guess you can impose whatever will on him you want now, at this point John will be nearly mute to people speaking only when spoken to.
