I'm back; I still don't feel particularly great though.

@CrazyShadowy
Good to know, I guess. Contrary to popular opinion, I'm my own biggest critic; I'm not biased.

@NekoMizu
Heh, perhaps, or just wing it each time.

It has been said you are your own biggest critic, that's always a hard thing to do. Impress yourself enough to reach that point.

Honestly I've been thinking about for a few minutes just how toxic the anime community is. Like, it's so bad that people are literally afraid to tell others what they enjoy, since they may get attacked for their opinions on certain shows. I mean, that can be said for any fanbase ever, but this is probably one of the worst fanbases out there. Not the worst, but one of the worst.

If by "worst" you mean it's one of the ones most likely to receive undeserved bashing from self-ordained bigots, then I agree with you. I actually discussed that in very small detail in this post just now.

In some instances I'm one of those people who are afraid to say what I enjoy (on Youtube for example). Generally when people call fandoms toxic I see people talking about fandoms attacking other fandoms, but the anime community is so bad not even people in the fandom are safe. There are worse communities, but anime's fandom is just really bad.

I think you've mostly experienced that due to the fact that you have more subjective experience with that community due to being a part of it yourself. You'll find that no matter what community you take part in there will always be toxic people; that's part of the point I was making in the debate that took place not so long ago in this thread. Generalizations are a bad thing in general, and they even contribute to a lot of problems within fandoms.

Ah, I forgot to include "Same could be said for any community" I did not mean that it's not a prevalent thing in every community, just that it's VERY easy to find in the anime community. I've seen many discussions about toxicity in the anime community and a ton of people agree that it's possibly one of the worst in that aspect, maybe top 10, top 20 most toxic. But I'm willing to say it's in the top 5.

While it's still a thing that can be seen pretty easily (like say bashing on fans of SSB Brawl and such), the Melee community, from what I have seen is pretty nice and is probably the least toxic community that I have seen. Again, it does have its moments, like any other community, but Super Smash Bros. Melee (in case you didn't know what I meant by Melee or SSB)'s is probably the least I've seen.

But yeah, anime community is kinda shit and I want to avoid it, but at the same time I don't know if I really can.

Actually, I've yet to meet someone in the Super Smash Bro. community who I didn't think was toxic. If you happen to be one of them, or someone else in this little group of ours is, then you're the first example I've seen otherwise. Like I said, it's all entirely subjective; the anime community is going to have plenty of problematic people because it's a very large community. The majority of people in other fandoms that I've encountered (comic books, D&D, Warhammer, etc) were all really toxic too; it's simply what happens when there's so many people in a fandom and so many people happen to be assholes.

On my end I just avoid communities in general; even being on this site is something very uncharacteristic of me.

Everyone I've talked to in the Melee community have been very helpful and I haven't seen anyone saying something like "If you are not good at the game, you might as well give up. Possibly on life." lel. But this is just what I've seen, you clearly have seen differently.

I don't know if it counts that I enjoy anime and talk about it often to others who enjoy anime as well, but I consider myself as part of the community, which that is why I am sad to see so many people harassing others in the same community for having a different opinion of a show, genre, or idea/concept/trope.

Like just having an opinion is all right, as well as stating said opinion. But they all have very extreme views that they feel they need to force in others, because if they don't they will not be able to sleep knowing someone likes lolis when they do not. lel But who knows? Maybe I'm the one with extreme views on things.

I understand why it bothers you; I sometimes feel "dirty" for enjoying certain things simply because it means I could be counted as part of the community, but I don't consider myself part of any fandom outright, since I don't involve myself with them for the most part.

The most recurrent types of toxic people I find in the Super Smash Bros. community can be categorized into two groups, I believe; people who bash each other because they don't agree on what rules or settings or items or stages should be considered "legal" in competitive play, and people who bash anything if it's not Nintendo, period. The latter is more toxic to me, because the former exists in every competitive community sadly. You cannot provide viable justification for why you're not interested in what they like because they block out anything they don't want to hear; they live in their own little world.

I know Nintendo fanboys that will bash a new addition to Super Smash Bros. if that character isn't one of Nintendo's creations, and people who literally think they're a superior form of life compared to anyone who doesn't think Nintendo is an almighty messiah that can do no wrong. These people would literally get the next Mario game even if Nintendo decided to turn Mario into a stand-in for Hitler and completely defended, nay advocated the Holocaust; they're fucking degenerates.

For the rules thing, I've definitely never seen anyone fighting over rules and items and such, the amount of legal stages available in competitive play make it nearly impossible to lose any more stages, there are like 5 that you can possibly play on 1v1, there are never items in competitive play, and in Melee no characters are banned, so that's good. Settings are also generally the same, 4 stocks 8 minutes. I haven't seen it differ, nor have I seen people rioting about it.

For the latter category, that's typical for any game, console, or company. But I've seen Nintendo get as much hate for being Nintendo as Kingdom Hearts gets for being Disney. But yeah, that's not to say the nintendo community doesn't antagonize other gaming communities (It's been established and brought up more than once in the discussion that every community has its toxic fans)

That actually makes me think though. I've been complaining about the anime community so much for its toxicity, but I've hardly (if at all) talked about the positives of the community. There are tons of toxic people in the community, but at the same time there are tons of nice, helpful people who actually want to partake in the community rather than attack their own fandom.

The rules thing is a lot more apparent when you find people who create the rather logical argument (an argument I myself use) that the game isn't even "balanced" at all in the first place if it has to have such an excessive amount of its content banned in order to be able to have a reasonable competitive community. As far as I'm concerned it's just a party game and shouldn't be taken seriously at tournaments due to that. The worst you usually get in a real fighting game is perhaps one or two banned characters (or moves) and it being illegal for players to choose stages on purpose instead of selecting random; that's about it.

Every community does the bashing I just mentioned, but the bigger named the company is the more likely it has to have a very toxic community similar to what I just described in my last post. Mob mentality and popularity contests, as well as reliance on reputation or social position in the world, never result in anything but the poisoning of the human consciousness.

Pretty much; there's good eggs and bad eggs in every bunch. Nothing I've been saying in these posts was meant to be universal, but rather was just my own experience and I don't hate a specific community for those things; I simply have no desire to be part of a herd.
