This is a conceptual roleplay set in the Naruto Universe within the framework of an alternate universe.

What this means though, is that for the most part canonical characters and events are absent from this continuity. There is no Naruto Uzumaki, and as a byproduct there are no events surrounding that character and Kishimoto’s original timeline in this roleplay. This allows a fresh interpretation of the base universe, new ideas to flourish without needing to cross reference every specific fact, and of course creates a constantly building continuity as mysteries and legends unfold before our very eyes. This is a role-play that does not exist with official canon, however while this is so events have branched similarly to some effect. Core characters from aforementioned official canon have been removed from play but their clans continue to be shaped similarly.

Players will begin with an academy student in Konohagakure that is awaiting the results of the genin exams. This is, in part, due to my belief of what Naruto is about as a setting. Basically, I believe at the heart of it that Naruto is about the character's growth as a genin, the camaraderie they create with their friends, the bonds that deepen through experience, and ultimately the path they take. So all CS’s should be marked “genin” level unless you are applying for a jonin-sensei. Players are encouraged to have as many characters as they can handle, but remember quality-over-quantity as well as to be mindful of many characters. I would personally prefer players to have no more than three characters at the start.

With that said, the RP itself will be as equally plot and narrative-driven as it will be character-driven. I take influence centrally from the first Naruto series in this regard. Character development is central to a good story and at the root of it this is just another collaborative story loosely based on the Naruto setting. I will explain more when the OOC goes up in the subsequent weeks, but I wanted to get our momentum going early. If you have questions, concerns, threats, or thoughts it would be apt to voice them!

Seji Period

Otsutsuki Hagoromo, the Sage of the Six Paths, and the prophet of ninshu.

It is said as the offspring of Otsutsuki Kaguya that the enlightenment of chakra gave him understanding that no other man could comprehend and is the one who repurposed mundane thieves, monks, and ronin into one entity. The places he visited were said to be the ancestral beginnings of the great ninja nations of modern day. Hagoromo however, despite his complex understanding of chakra and ninshu theory he never found the time or vitality to continue his line as such the Otsutsuki Clan would die with Hagoromo, but to that point there was also sort of men that he would call his children— his ten disciples; one of which that would continue the teachings of ninshu whilst the other nine would meet a fate that nobody could perceive: the biju.

The origin of the biju (or tailed beasts) is something deeply rooted into shinobi mythology and are important in conjunction with the early stories revolving around the prophet of the shinobi arts, Ōtsutsuki Hagoromo. Various sources cite the biju as beings sent to punish man for trying to challenge the gods while others claim they were always a natural force in the world. Whichever the case, the Sage and his disciples set out to bring peace to the realm and many of them were sacrificed to stop the world from collapsing from the sheer power of the biju. It is said that the sage himself died alongside nine of his disciples against the biju. The canonical and literal aspect of this story is unknown and it has many interpretations, but it is the foundation for all “fairytales” of the biju that are used to scare young shinobi into behaving properly.

The one surviving disciple, continued to instruct until he too died which decades after his death brought forth the shinobi era.

Konton Period

Also known as the “Warring States Period”, the Konton Period was established following the disappearance and speculated death of Otsutsuki Hagoromo’s sole surviving disciple and the last known ninshu Sage, Tsuchigumo Musashi. After sixty-three years of spreading the ninshu philosophy, teaching the basis of chakra, developing kenjutsu, and forging a variety of swords a loss was felt when Musashi vanished; a disappearance that made many people believe he had passed on. Outside of his teachings (and the teachings of his master), Musashi only left two legacies—his clan and his legendary shinobi swords.

The Tscuhigumo Clan’s temple on Mount Katsuragi and village that would in time become known as Yamagakure would become meccas for the Ninshu faithful— and as Musashi was known as a philosopher, prophet, disciple, and swordsmith it would in time lead many shinobi to travel to the locations for a variety of reasons. However, despite what was to come the Tscuhigumo Clan refused to be loyal to a daimyo or interact in any war; devoted to the beliefs of their founder.

Beyond the Tsuchuigumo Clan and the Swords of Musashi was the legacy of his teachings amongst three cultural factions—the monks, samurai, and shinobi. Outside of the monks, the factions would find themselves in a completive society where minor lords and people with power needed quick solutions to their problems. This would lead to infighting amongst shinobi clans and rivalries between the samurai clans and for several hundreds of years this continued constantly as a statement of humanity’s sins and false sense of virtue. This would continue until four individuals came to prominence amongst the shinobi in the realm that had become known as “The Land of Fire” following a conquest by the Hono Dynasty. These shinobi would lead to the centralization of the village that was renamed Konohagakure following the end of their rivalries and the rest would shortly become history.

These shinobi—Senju Idarama, Uchiha Ranmaru, Hyuga Takahiro, and Sarutobi Ujimasa—would set a precedent for the future.

Fukugen Period

Known as the current era (CE), the Fukugen Period, was established with the foundation of the major shinobi villages and their alliances within the elemental nations they called home.

The era has been for the most part defined as a time of restoration, change, and rebirth following the devastating warring states era that defined not only the shinobi world but the imperial world as well. Unfortunately, it seems the Fukugen Period is more than willing to repeat the mistakes of it’s predecessor. For the last several years, Konohagakure has been in a tense peace resulting from the peace accords signed by the major shinobi nations— though this hardly is absolute as other major conflicts are beginning to take shape that could bring another great war. It is here in the one hundred and twelfth year of this era that Konohagakure struggles with maintaining neutrality when rivals, enemies, and even allies alike are beginning to see how much they can encroach on before Konoha joins the conflicts outright.

Konohagakure is one of the oldest shinobi villages in the known world and it continues to be one of the largest to this day despite the struggles it has endured throughout history.

Konohagakure has an erratic history and a storied reputation, one that has led the founding clans to strengthen their bonds and techniques as they work towards ensuring the safety and survival of the village no matter what the consequences end up being. The leading government of the village is a council led by clan elders— specifically that of the Senju, Uchiha, Sarutobi, and Hyuga being the highest on the pecking order of Konohagakure’s long list of noble shinobi clans with the greatest of influence and power. Above the council is the Hokage, whom of which serves as the face of the village though is not completely autonomous in power due to the council’s democratic weight and influence.

The council of elders is currently made up of several noteworthy individuals who have in recent seasons taken up an approach to the state of the realm as a telltale sign that reinforcement of borders, expansion of their presence, and punishment of their enemies is necessary. With the passing of the former Hokage they deem this as an opportunity to remind Konohagakure’s citizens what exactly the Will of Fire means.

The Shinobi Great War: 84-101

_{Daimyo Hiryu Yoshiyuki of the Land of Fire and others sign an agreement that ultimately becomes known as a set of peace accords that end the conflicts between Konohagakure, Iwagakure, and Sunagakure. This becomes known as the end of the Shinobi Great War following the defeat of Kumogakure at the hands of the ruthless tactics of Kirigakure. As a result of the end of the violent conflicts ending several lands result to isolationist or classist policies to protect themselves as they look for ways to defend themselves in the future from external hostilities and insurrection. Some nations are critically damaged and their infrastructure crippled. Rebuilding begins.}

<sub>A violent and bloody spring occurs at what becomes the tail-end of the war— Konoha continues to be the epicenter of the conflicts:

The Day of the Fallen Leaves — Due to their involvement in defending Sunagakure and The Land of Fire, Konohagakure is brutally attacked in a massive shinobi raid led by Iwagakure’s most notable ANBU operative, Bushou Eikichi. Eikichi’s tactical strike team assault the village just before the break of dawn with information that the village’s central threats are away in Kirigakure, Kusagakure, and Sunagakure thus leaving the Village Hidden in the Leaves an “easy” target. Konohagakure’s losses are high and the battle becomes iconic when the Hokage, Uchiha Kazunari, faces off with Eikichi himself. Eikichi uses his mastery of the Eight Gates to eliminate the Hokage and several key targets but ultimately dies when he unlocks the final gate of his technique.

The Night of the Red Dunes — As the majority of jonin and ANBU operatives are assigned to the capital of The Land of Wind, Sunagakure is attacked by the lead ANBU operative of Iwagakure, Kurai Heishi, with a strike team similar in composition of the one sent to Konohagakure. The elderly Kazekage, Chikamatsu Kazuhiza, personally dies on the frontlines while several academy students and non-shinobi flee. Kurai Heishi orders his “face card” (Kamizuru Shigeru) as well as his ANBU partner (Bushou Youki) to headline the assault whilst he personally flanked the village at their shinobi academy. Shigeru is killed in the process. By the time of battle’s end Bushou Youki orders a retreat after Shigeru and many others are killed in the battle. Heishi is presumed dead.

The Assault of the Storm Fleet — A joint task force organized between Kirigakure and Konohagakure to be the critical point of pushing Kumogakure and the Land of Lightning’s fleet out of The Land of Water. Utilizing the natural current of the winds of the sea and shinobi mastery of wind and fire release, Kirigakure’s lead tactician and kenjutsu specialist (Uzumaki Seijuro) utilizes a ruse to cover up a massive fire attack on the Storm Fleet. With total cooperative and cohesion among the task force, history remembers Kumogakure’s critical loss at this battle— and the burning ships that sunk in the shadow of a full moon.</sub>

◈ Autumn, 91 CE
_{Kirigakure calls on a treaty signed by the Land of Fire and Konohagakure for them to join them in defending their lands against the invasion headed by Kumogakure. Refusing to break a treaty, this puts The Land of Fire as the epicenter of conflict and divides them between two fronts— defending Sunagakure/Wind and Kirigakure/Water. It will in time prove to be a costly mistake.}

_{Conflicts continue after a few years of peace when Iwagakure is ordered to attack Sunagakure assets to force the Land of Wind’s hand— Daimyo Ishigaki Daisuke claims it is simply an acquisition of territory that belongs to them that had wrongly been held by its rivals for several decades. This becomes known as one half of a Great Shinobi War after the Land of Lightning invades the Land of Water in the same year.}

The Iron Invasion: 51-84

_{After living a rough life, Yamanaka Inoiko passes on— the injuries sustained from the battles against the Land of Iron proving too much to bear. She is succeeded by an ex-ANBU shinobi by the name of Uchiha Kazunari.}

They become an inspiration to missing-nin and nomadic shinobi alike who wish to bring back the warring states era.}

Character Creation

Character creation is limited, but still inclusive.

What this means is I will be accounting for depth, characterization, motives, and capabilities of the character extensively to see if they are appropriate for the vision and tone of the RP—the process will be more critical on characters with higher ranks within their village’s hierarchy.

Players are expected to create characters that are reasonable in design. Given that the average age of a academy student is around eleven to twelve years of age I will be looking at how the character comes off. Given that this is an anime-based RP there will be a lot of suspension of belief, of course, but ultimately we have to remember that these to-be genin are still children. They may know the violence they are preparing to involve themselves in as a shinobi, but they have not experienced what is going to be their reality. The moderation staff will be looking at CS applications on a moderate level— I don’t want to be over-firm but I don’t want to be overtly accepting everything that might not jive with me to make face.

In the interest of narrowing things down at least a little to start off, there should also be some ground rules set about Nature Transformations. If you've taken the time to glance over the character sheet by now, you'll see that there's a "Chakra Nature" section. While not necessarily explicitly spelled out there, we're going to hope you have the better judgement to have one chakra affinity, barring some really convincing arguments to the contrary. So, what does that mean for your jutsu list? Well, as a genin, there's a good chance that any chakra using an elemental nature are going to be done using the chakra affinity outlined in the sheet. That being said, in the genin's quest for self-improvement, there is always the chance that they can dip outside of their affinity and become more versatile as a result. Bonus points given if your genin actually learns something from their sensei rather than some sort of vague self-study course.

As long as your CS is reasonable or can be justified you'll likely do fine.

Oh, one more thing: just for semantics and people not pining over google for hours or even a few minutes— genin height should be in the ball park of 4’9”, if you want a shorter genin they’d likely be under that by only a few steps and vice versa for taller genin. So basically if you make a genin who is six foot even I am going to hurt you.

Jutsu Guidelines

Masashi Kishimoto is a creative individual who has throughout the publication of Naruto created an extensive list of jutsu of varying levels of power that in a RP could be frankly bullshit. But unlike other Naruto RP’s I will be clear and say sometimes bullshit is okay— if it’s approvable bullshit with a merit to the story progression or character depth. A genin with abilities that can rival a Kage or Sage? Not at all likely. But given the nuances of prodigies, fools, and kunoichi there is a lot of room for margin of suspension of belief. Even in the canon’s earliest (and most sane) moments, we had characters straight out of the academy who had skills/affinities/talents their teammates didn’t.

For example— Sasuke had a variety of techniques that were beyond “Academy Techniques” as he was not only talented but from a prominent clan with various affinities. Sakura had chakra control down so well she could walk up trees whereas her comrades couldn’t. Naruto utilized creative jutsu like his perverse twisting of the transformation technique. If we keep this in mind during character creation we can create clever and dynamic characters that make sense but even more than that are fun to interact with because everyone has their own niche.

How does this apply to “approvable bullshit”?

That’s a large question—but use your imagination in the character creation process, talk to me and your peers, and see what works and what doesn’t. Hell, if you’re a player I know really well that might not even be necessary. Academy Students should have all academy techniques (or presumption knowledge of them) listed in their E Rank hider. Beyond that they should have 2-3 D Rank abilities, and 1-2 C Rank abilities. If you have a good argument for one more then make it in PM or notation; elsewise this is fairly concrete. Presuming I accept chunin (and jonin) the scale would increase.

Non-canon (aka Custom Jutsu) should be written in with rough description of a fundamental definition, weakness, and general mechanic.

Restricted Content

I’m going to be honest, despite the flexibility I offer within characterization there are limits to it. Unless I have had an in-depth conversation with you that leads to me approving a controversial or powerful affinity, technique, or bloodline you are going to get a no. This applies to certain high-level jutsu, jinchuriki, custom kekkei genkai, sage abilities, overpowered curse seals, and so forth. There are only a few exceptions to this restriction but unless you have a good argument or long-term plan I would highly suggest you forget about it.

Writing Level

The writing level I expect is somewhere around medium expectations (high school-level equivalent). This means comprehensive understanding of basic grammar and spelling is expected, characterization is important, narrative is important, and detail behind those are appreciated. I’d want maybe two paragraphs as a rule, though if it fits a post that there is enough to respond to and react with in one paragraph than that’s fine, but one-liner’s will definitely be off-base. Keep with the fluidity and enjoy yourself; though quality posts don’t have to be textbooks and I severely doubt I will require a “novel”-esque post.

A good guideline is this quotation that I adhere to for my own posts:

“Advanced roleplaying should focus on developing interesting and complex characters that become part of plot-lines which catch the imagination and inspire the writer behind them to exercise creativity. It is mature, humorous, imaginative, tragic, terrifying, passionate, and rife with descriptive language and characters with real personality and relatable cares. Quality posting is far better than needless novels, yet one should never neglect detail when one feels the need. However, while word and paragraph requirements ought to be unnecessary, single paragraphs cannot contain enough detail to suffice.”

With that said, I will not be putting posts under extreme analysis nor will I be inciting a “word count”. So just use your personal judgment and we’ll be awesome.

Etiquette

Rule number zero of my perspective is pretty simple; don’t test my patience or be a irredeemable jerk.

Generally, the idea here is a simplified version of any sort of rules since we are “veteran” members of RPG and we pretty much know the big rules—follow the host site’s rules, communicate, collaborate, and don’t be antagonistic towards others or at the very least keep the toxicity to a bare minimum. Playful banter and crass jokes are one thing; but actively making somebody feel unwelcome is another one entirely. There is a difference between being blunt and being tactless.

Within the framework of the RP we know that communication is very important, so we should consider a few things in the regard of IC interaction. I will not tolerate sentiments such as “figure out how to defeat my character on your own” as sometimes characterization is above the player’s own ability; so if somebody PMs or opens a discussion about wondering how to defeat your character, help them if it is a good story hook or adds depths to an arc. Though with that said, don’t metagame; even if you know the weaknesses understand your characters own ability as well as what would be best for the story.

Hyuga Tsugumi

Twenty-eight years old. Hyuga Tsugumi as we all know is the recently elected successor to Sarutobi Shinichi, who served us well as Godaime Hokage. As Rokudaime Hokage, she has a lot on her plate to take care of though I do find it odd that we would elect someone so young to lead our village even with her accomplishments during the war in mind. Beyond that there is nothing particularly suspicious about our new leader despite how much I look. I know she had an affectionate relationship with the Kagetsu migrant, but as far as I can tell his disappearance and her assignment as an ANBU operative has pretty much made any relationship to be impossible. It would’ve likely ended in tears, at any rate; the Hyuga don’t like out of clan consummation and romance.

Admittedly, my assessment may be particularly my own fault for still seeing her as a bubbly head-in-the-clouds genin— she has gotten more recognizably serious in recent years. She’s been a capable member of ANBU despite sometimes being relatively frustrating to deal with, and yes I am well aware she has access to these files. I am hopeful for the future, but I expect the worst before all else.

Hatake Toshiro

Twenty-eight years old. Hatake Toshiro is the former “genius” of Team Atsuo—a survivor of the great war that ended eleven years ago following a devastating attack on our village by Iwagakure shinobi. Instead of continuing his path as a jonin like his comrades (Aburame Koyomi and Senju Hotsuma) he immediately shifted focus and applied for a stationary assignment as an academy instructor. His admirable dedication to the future of our village aside, it is odd that he would prefer to remain a chunin given his previous track record.

In recent years he has been promoted to Head Instructor of the Academy, apparently never faltering on educating our youths. Despite his personality being rather stoic and icy, he seems well-received as an instructor by the students and overall is attempting to create unity amongst them. I believe his expectations of the shinobi to be daunting, however, but he does get results and prepare academy students for their prospective futures quite well.

Yamanaka Inokari

Twenty-six years old. Yamanaka Inokari is the eldest daughter of my superior and the leader of the Yamanaka Clan, Yamanaka Inotachi. Calm yet free spirited, Inokari is ranked as a chunin as of this report, Inokari is a specialist regarding archery and lightning nature ninjutsu. She has a high success rate on missions she is assigned and works well with a majority of shinobi. APPEARANCE

A relatively tall girl at around 5'1, Kiri could easily be confused for a boy were it not for her low, messy twintails and her feminine voice. Her eyes are a cold blue and distinctly intense in contrast to the rather pleasant and relaxed expression her face rests with. Despite her kind expression and soft features, her body is a defined and trained thing, a result of many hours of intense physical exercise. It’s not hard to imagine her filling out with more muscle in the coming years, but as it is she merely looks stronger than her average classmate.

Kiri tends to dress in rather traditional martial clothing, from her baggy and ill-fitting blue dougi to her hand wraps and sarashi. Strangely enough, her hands have already started to develop callouses, and she has a few scars on her palm and knuckles. It cannot be said that she isn't a hard worker, and her body reflects that perfectly.

PERSONALITY & MOTIVATIONS

If there was one word to sum up Kiri, it would be ‘charitable’. Undoubtedly a result of her upbringing, Kiri seems to have a philanthropic streak, not only in a monetary sense but in the spiritual and mental senses too. While no genius, she is the sort to go out of her way to help a struggling classmate, encouraging them to do their best. While not rich, she will give coinage to the struggling—and so on. It would not be unfair to call her a peaceful idealist.

But how does becoming a ninja, a literal soldier, fit into the worldview of one who could be called a peaceful idealist? In short, Kiri is not a pacifist. She is a strong believer in self-defence on all levels, from the personal to the national. Naturally, she takes issue with being the initiator of a conflict, but has no qualms with an equal response to an initiation. She desires to protect Konohagakure and the Land of Fire, her beautiful home, from those who would see it sullied. She is her mother's daughter in that sense, if willing to be more proactive to reach that end.

Beyond that, she seems driven by a desire to escape the trappings of her family and the role which is expected of her, to branch out from the family tree and explore the world and meet a certain individual with the opportunities offered to her by the ninja lifestyle.

CLAN HISTORY

The Matsudaira are not a family of ninja, but a shrine family. Their charge is a purely spiritual one, acting as religious guides and intermediaries for the people of Konoha. In a sense they are analogous to ‘shamans’, performing cleansing rites and other rituals which are viewed to be vital towards the more mundane spiritual elements of the culture. Notably, the family structure tends towards the matriarchal, priestesses having more weight behind them than the priests. In order to defend their temple, be it petty thieves or something more dire, members of the Matsudaira family are trained in use of the daikyu and naginata from a young age. Although they are untraditional weapons in the history of ninjutsu-based warfare, they offer a slight benefit to those untrained in the ways of ninja and samurai if used proficiently, giving them the ability to 'pick off' individuals and keep a safe distance. Although civilians, the Matsudaira are tough civilians.

It is not entirely unheard of for members of the Matsudaira clan to leave and become members of some other institution, but the small family generally sticks to their role of priests and priestesses. In fact, it is considered odd by the nation at large when a Matsudaira leaves their clan’s role to take up another given the long and dedicated history of their family towards spiritual matters. They rarely interact with the ninja side of Konohagakure outside of occasionally hiring genin teams to assist them with mundane and everyday matters, and have a more of a more noteworthy presence in civilian life. Any recent, extensive interaction with military matters have not ended well for the Matsudaira.

Aiga Matsudaira, the previous matriarch of the family before the current, was a known element in the world as a rather outspoken advocate for a peaceful resolution between the warring nations, but she ultimately met her end on the Day of Fallen Leaves as an unfortunate casualty— or potentially as an intended target. Likely as a result, the eldest son of the current Matsudaira family members, Saga Matsudaira, left Konoha for his own reasons. The second eldest, Iri Matsudaira, took up the role of matriarch of the clan with her grandfather assisting her, and the youngest abandoned her duties as a shrine priestess to begin training as a ninja.

PERSONAL HISTORY

Kiri’s family life was tense. Interactions between her older siblings, father and grandparents always seemed to have an air of discomfort which she could never quite ignore. Not long after Kiri’s birth, the Matsudaira lost a beloved member of their family— they lost Kiri’s mother. In a sense, she was the then-lynchpin for the family, the point they could all agree that they loved without condition. Without her, there was noone to mitigate the disapproval of Kiri’s grandparents towards her older brother, or for someone to break up the disagreements between her older sister and her father. It all combined to make a very terse setting for a family dinner.

She was raised in relative comfort, and without much conflict, but the absence of her mother and the climate of the Matsudaira household chafed Kiri. She attended to her role as a priestess-in-training, learned what was expected of her, all without as much of a peep of discontent from her mouth, but the feeling was there, brooding away.

The event which triggered these feelings of discontent to surface was the self-imposed exile of her older brother, abandoning his family due to the exact same feelings held by Kiri. While Kiri was far too young to remember her mother, her older brother remembered their mother well. Without her around, he picked up the proverbial slack in looking after Kiri, firmly securing his place as the ‘cool brother’ in her eyes. The one who had provided her relief from the monotony of her education was gone, and suddenly the world seemed that much more uncomfortable to Kiri.

She wanted to leave.

The desire to become a ninja was rather sudden, but it was the obvious path to take in order to escape the Matsudaira household and stretch her legs. Not only would she become stronger—and not meet the same fate as her mother, who could not defend herself despite preaching for peace— but there was also the chance that such a life would allow her to find her brother once more.

Upon entering the academy, it was obvious that Kiri was not from a ninja stock. Her control was less than adequate, and her natural chakra reserves were nothing to brag about, but within her was a drive and a desire to learn which compensated for those failings of hers. One step away from being considered a dead-last or an underachiever, Kiri redeemed herself from such a label through beating enough of her classmates during sparring sessions. Instead, she was considered something of a 'beast', only good for punching and kicking but not for the more refined elements of being a ninja, like ninjutsu. Such an idea hardly phased Kiri, despite the negative denotations, and she instead took it as a sort of compliment to her abilities. Nonetheless, she is still genin material.

INFLUENCE & RELATIONS

Within the village, Kiri is considered the stray daughter of the Matsudaira clan. This isn't necessarily a negative thing, but it definitely isn't a positive thing either. This does not impact on how she is treated, and is more of an afterthought when regarding her. If anything, the worst thing to come from it would be the association with her brother, the one who ran away from his duties at the Shrine and the Land of Fire as a whole.

Among her family, Kiri is regarded as a young upstart. Even her older sister, Iri, wishes for her to put aside her desire to become a ninja and focus instead on her role as a soon-to-be Shrine Priestess, even though she was the one who approved her entering the academy as the current clan head. Conversations with her father and grandparents are few and far between, as she avoids them on her own initiative, believing that they would have very little to say to her beyond their desire to see her 'return', as it were. Her father and grandfather, Furuta and Kitajo Matsudaira, are something of a pair of dour traditionalists, hardened by years of seeing people go off to war to see them not return, only for the war to then come to Konohagakure and take Aiga from them at the very end. Their desire to see Kiri remain with her family is entirely justified, but she remains adamant on her choice, something which has soured relations between Kiri and the eldest members of her family. They don't want to see her meet the same fate as her mother, but she fails to see it as they do.

In the Academy, Kiri has earned the nickname 'Beast' due to her near-savantish focus on Taijutsu and her below-average scoring in other areas. She's not necessarily unpopular, but she is not highly regarded either. Still, she offers what help she can to those who desire it.

Family

Mother † - Aiga Matsudaira(42), both a reputable priestess and a known, outspoken advocate for peace. Killed by Iwa forces on the Day of Fallen Leaves.

Father - Furuta Matsudaira (45), married into the family from a civilian family. A stoic historian and a dabbling martial artist. Disapproves of his youngest daughter's choice to become a ninja.

Grandmother † - Inoue, Matsudaira (81), more of a warrior than a priestess. While not a samurai or a ninja, she could handle herself in a fight better than most. Was responsible for Kiri and Iri's education up until her natural death in the summer of CE 107.

Grandfather - Kitajo, Matsudaira (85), not too dissimilar from his son-in-law, Kitajo is even more of a scholar than Furuta. Because of his late wife's more hot-headed nature, he tended to be the one to handle the more official side of running a temple. A long term planner, and fiscally intelligent, enough so to ensure the Matsudaira family was comfortable with what money it had.

Brother - Daigo, Matsudaira (20), the prodigal son. Influence from his father resulted him taking to martial arts from a young age, focusing more on that than his potential duties to the temple. By the time he left the Matsudaira household for good, he was on the cusp of becoming a world-class fighter in his own right. Cared deeply for his siblings. Location and status currently unknown.

Sister - Iri, Matsudaira (17), the current head of the Matsudaira family. Where Kiri and Daigo picked up elements from around the entirety of their family, Iri is most certainly her mother's daughter. A kind and considerate soul, she is not fond of conflict and does what she can to steer individuals away from it. Disapproves of her sister's choice to become a ninja, but it accepting of it.

Peers

Namikaze Fukushu: The distant Namikaze has Kiri's respect, complete and absolutely. While the term 'friends' is certainly not in consideration, Kiri admires the raw amount of dedication Fukushu has put into her education, from her ninjutsu capabilities (which greatly outshines Kiri's own) to the physical. Although Kiri has no idea why the young Namikaze is the way she is—not that she would dare ask— she'll gladly spar with her, and smiling all the while. If she's able to help her classmate push her boundaries, all the while improving herself, then the reason is unimportant to Kiri, so long as they can both reach their respective heights.

Hakkyokuken, the 8 Extremities Fist: A fledgling style of Kiri’s own design, Hakkyokuken’s basis comes from the lessons of her brother, academy taijutsu and her education in naginata techniques. The idea behind Hakkyokuken, as put forward by Kiri, is to hit where you would be afraid to be hit, and with a force you would wish to avoid. While still a ‘work in progress’, Kiri believes that regions like the legs, neck and thorax are the most effective areas to strike. She is of the belief that the practice of this style will be additionally beneficial against non-taijutsu specialists due to the absence of a comprehensive guarding technique taught to students at the academy. The development of Hakkyokuken is a long-term project for Kiri, and she intends for it to be her legacy to give to the ninja world. To the end of using this form of combat, Kiri has trained her body into a powerful weapon with room to grow further.

FOCUS & SKILLS

Kiri has a rather blatant leaning towards taijutsu to a near exclusive extent. This is not because she is incapable of ninjutsu, but that she lacks an obvious talent for it like a child from an actual ninja family would. She is perfectly mediocre (if leaning towards below average) when it comes to her academy jutsu, but puts in enough effort to make herself passable. However, her physical ability was worth mentioning among her classmates. She took to academy taijutsu well enough to the point where she progressed beyond it, adapting more complex techniques and stances into her fighting style. Her affinity for taijutsu is a result of her brother’s influence, a not unskilled martial artist in his own right. One of her fondest memories is that of her brother first taking her aside and teaching her how to throw a good punch, one she thinks back to as 'the good times'. It cannot be said that Kiri is a taijutsu genius, not a natural one at the least, but rather she is a monster of effort, putting far more into her craft comparative to the rest of her studies.

On a slightly related note, if academy students were graded on their abilities with a daikyu, Kiri could have been considered a prodigy.

EQUIPMENT & INVENTORY

Being less than exceptional in terms of chakra and ninjutsu, Kiri compensates with this by being rather savvy and on the ball when it comes to making use of the standard array of ninja equipment. Her aim with kunai and shuriken is decent, and her ability to make a plan of attack with them is not half-bad either. Beyond the standard ninja equipment, Kiri is something of a prodigy with a daikyu, having near supernatural aim and ability with one, but this is something which will rarely ever be seen due to the nature of being a ninja.

On top of this, she is quite exceptional with spears and glaives. Both the daikyu and the spear were a subject of her initial training in the Matsudaira, essentially taught to pull a bowstring at the same time she learned to walk. Although unlikely to actively be seen, the skills she learned from her initial training have helped her in the creation of her own budding martial style.

When first conceptualizing Hakkyokuken, Kiri encountered the problem of range. In an actual fight, it wasn’t inconceivable for her to simply be outranged and punished for it, so in order to resolve that she began working on the first ‘complex’ movement of Hakkyokuken, the Charging Step.

At the core of Hakkyokuken is the idea of explosive force transferred through striking points, and the Charging Step is no different. Through the balls of her feet, Kiri expels enough force to send her almost gliding forward, closing the gap between her and an opponent at a distance. There is the obvious problem of it being a one directional movement, and therefore predictable, but speed of the movement is nothing to scoffed at. For those at the level of genin, the movement would be observable, but the problem comes with reacting to the movement in a timely manner. It is the simplest expression of Hakkyokuken’s base idea, and a display of how it could grow in the future. The immediate drawback of using this technique is the amount of strain it puts on Kiri's legs. As she currently is, utilizing abilities which require strength of such degree are bound to take their toll, at least until her body has grown to accommodate such a thing.

The tetsuzanko is a rather basic movement in Hakkyokuken, in which force is applied through a turning step into a charge-lean, directing the force through the back of the shoulder. The Flying Tetsuzanko is the same in principle, there being no difference in the fundamental movement, but it is done through the Charging Step Technique, increasing the force- and therefore the force expelled- behind the technique. To those unable to dodge the Charging Step-Tetsuzanko combination, they should expect a blow strong enough to blow through the doors of a temple gate. Its weakness is inherently linked with the Charging Step Technique, given that it is built off of it. Smashing into something with so much force is, much like the initial movement of the Charging Step, bound to take its toll if used without a degree consideration.

Kiri shoots into the air, doing a rapid flip forward to position her descent just above her opponent. When she is in range, she grips what she can (usually the shoulders) and performs another flip with them in her grip, swinging them with her and then slamming them into the ground, upper-back first. Naturally, this taijutsu technique has a not inconsiderable amount of setup, and relies on it not being done in isolation in order to pull of it. If done in isolation, it can be avoided or countered off by a mindful opponent.

A defensive taijutsu technique. While by no means a perfect defense, it is effective at enabling the user to block or parrying a single attack, even if it may result in the user still being harmed to some degree. Kiri covers up her openings in this brief defensive stance, allowing her to move and respond to an oncoming attack. This response is not absolute physical protection, especially from overwhelming ninjutsu or certain weapons and excessive physical force, but it does contribute to mitigating the damage of such. Taking swords as an example, she may 'parry' the blade, but she could still receive a cut. None the less, it is a decent attempt at a defensive technique by a beginner.

Description

In the event of the blocked or parried blow being close range, Kiri can respond to Stone Divides Surging River with River Crushes Stone. She reaches out, gripping the front of her opponent, and drags them into a fierce palm strike to their thorax. The strike is intended to be done with enough force to do serious damage to the sternum, and send the opponent reeling backwards. While a highly situation based technique, once an attack has been blocked by Stone Divides Surging River, the setup for River Crushes Stone is essentially a minimal effort. The potential lethality of River Crushes Stone is reflected in its rank, riding the line between a simple martial technique and a straight up assassination technique. The conceptual idea behind it, according to Kiri, is that of a bow being loosed, and the arrow hitting true. It is her current 'trumpcard', largely untested but unseen by most.

Under the pretense that we never really got anywhere with Team Haitani in Winter, I'd like to potentially extend the "recent graduates only" rule to you two if you wish to transfer over your characters, though you would have to apply just the same and make any adjustments we can to make it fit the setting. If done, our characters would be 15/16 or 16/17 and Madarame would not be dead yet as far as my current plans are.

Tsume is tall for her age, as well as a bit more ‘developed’ as well, due to the fact that Ryuuga seem to mature somewhat faster than most other people, so while she 12 years of age, her body is closer to the 13/14 mark. She often wears loose, form-fitting clothes if she can help it, liking the option of being able to fight in whatever she’s currently wearing at any moment. As for looks, she’s been told on occasion that, when she’s not trying to pick fights or cause trouble, she looks rather pretty, though in truth she doesn’t really care much for her looks at the moment.

PERSONALITY & MOTIVATIONS

Tsume is about as stubborn and confrontational as they come despite, or perhaps because, of her weak body. While most would think that she'd try to stay low and keep from getting into tricky or stressful situations, she constantly puts herself into the business of others, attacking bullies and challenging stronger students in class whenever she can. Despite her need for medications an treatments, she remains about as cheerful as possible about life, being an optimist at heart that is convinced that everything works out in the end, no matter how rough things seem at the moment.

Despite her cheery, if brash, personality, few people can hold quite as much of a grudge as she can. Even if the offense is small, she'll likely hold it against the person in question for quite sometime before she let's it go, if she ever lets it go. It's often best not to cross her, cause while her body restricts her ability to fight, she has a devious mind and often pulls pranks and tricks on those who've manged to upset her in some way.

CLAN HISTORY

The Ryuuga Clan is an ancient clan, old as any of the other greats, yet steep in some amount of mystery and intrigue to outsiders. They appeared during the latter half of the Warring States Era, but only really came on the scene during the battles that took places between clans during the aftermath of the ‘kage decree’ and the formation of Kohonhagakure. They set about with great ferocity to conquer and absorb lesser clans into their own, and with great success as their forces, led by Ryuuzaki Ryuuga, maintained a dominating force on many battlefields, using both the raw strength of their shinobi and brilliant tactics to make village after village fall before them.

However, when the Hokage came to them with a deal, however, the clan head accepted without a struggle, though he did negotiate some concession so that his clan could remain some level of independence as a whole. When asked about this decision by his peers, Ryuuzaki said that it was a simple numbers game. Konohagakure not only had more clans under it’s belt at that time, but also had many that with special skills and abilities that the Ryuuga couldn’t counter on their own. To resist the peace offering that was offered would only be prolonging the inevitable, so he’d rather negotiate.

After that, the clan has remained a constant, if little understood, member of the Leaf. Where they shone the brightest was in the War against the Land of Iron where Kanzaki Ryuuga led many Samurai to the grave using various baiting tactics and false retreats to position his foes in unfavorable conditions, then crushing them in one fell swoop.

When the Great War got into full swing, the Ryuuga clan was usually present in every battle that was fought, having pushed hard to have their shinobi out fighting the good fight. However, during the Day of Fallen Leaves, a good deal of the clan, as many others, were wiped out in the fighting, leaving many with naught to come back to but ashes and ruin. Ever since that day, the Ryuuga clan swore bloody vengeance against Iwagakure, every shinobi they taking special car to eradicate the hated enemy from the battlefield entirely whenever they got the chance to. This hatred lingered on past the signing of the treaty, as many Ryuuga had lost friends and family in that attack, and feel as if they were denied their vengeance by this peace. While as a whole, the clan accepts the terms, any missing-nin from Iwa that finds themselves in a Ryuuga’s custody will find themselves in for a very bad time.

As of the present day, the Ryuuga are trying to better integrate with the rest of the village, as they have been acting like mostly a separate but loyal entity to Konoha since their inception, and while traditionalist don’t find a problem with this, many of them were killed in the war, leaving only the youth behind to take positions of clout and influence policy. The current clan head, Onigawa Ryuuga, had made a mandate so that the children of their clan could now join the academy proper, instead of being trained inside their compound as has been the case till now, as well as having their shinobi form up in teams with outsiders more frequently than has occurred in the past.

PERSONAL HISTORY

Tsume was, in plain terms, a mistake and embarrassment to her family. The Ryuuga are a proud clan of warriors, and thus praise strength and combat utility above all else. Her father, Jin Ryuuga, was a golden boy in that regard, a powerful and experienced Jonin that was able to wield his element with a mastery that was simply terrifying, and his first daughter, Akane, seemed to have inherited her father's skill. However, when his wife bore another child near the end of the great war, there was little cause for celebration. Instead of another proud example of the Ryuuga bloodline, he was greeted with a sickly weak child that needed even more attention then care then a regular infant to see them through those first few years.

Tsume's early childhood was filled with trips to the Konohagakure Hospital, her lungs and body weak and in need of constant care and medications to keep her alive. The family was often told that the child would be lucky to make it to 8 years old, if that, and while her mother and sister ferociously worked to make sure that the young girl lived, Jin simply clicked his teeth in disdain at the weakness before him, of the weakness being shown by his own flesh and blood. Those first 3 years of life marked a significant worsening of the family relationships as Akane and Akari both fought with Jin over his lack of care for his own daughter.

As life went on, Tsume's health improved enough that she no longer walked a tight-rope between life and death, though she still needed to receive treatments so that she could keep it that way. As she grew older, however, she also grew aware of the utter disdain her father seemed to have for her, how he seemed to do everything he could to ignore her existence. Whuke her mother and sister tried to convince her that she didn't need his approval, she still strove for it. Not because she felt she needed it, but so that she could prove him, and others naysayers within the clan, that she was every bit the Ryuuga he was, that she could and would surpass him one day and force him to acknowledge her. This has led to no end of conflicts between the two as they both stubbornly butt heads, trying the force the other into submission. Tsume's constant challenges of Jin's authority are met with a harsh hand and restrained cruelty, asking her to perform tasks that are impossible for her skill level, and then berating her harshly on her failings. Tsume, in return, continues to challenge him, continues to meet his challenges, and sometimes even meets them through sheer determination.

As far as academy life goes, Tsume enjoys her time with those outside of her clan, as they tend to judge her for her frail constitution and often bullied her. Similar events could also happen among the other children, but not as frequently or as harshly, so she could easily ignore those when it happened. Her current focus is on Nin-taijustu, another way of spiting her father as well as a way to strengthen her body as much as possible. As such, she often seeks help from other students and even teachers on the subject as she attempts to form a style all her own.

Tsume, as a member of the Ryuuga family, is born with a very strong connection to her elemental affinity of fire, thus making her fire jutsu’s that much stronger and more efficient as nature manipulation comes to a Ryuuga as easy as breathing, it’s something they can all do with little effort. However, due to her connection to fire being so strong that it even affects her chakra, and thus, other non-elemental techniques(to a certain degree) that she is literally incapable of using any other elemental jutsus.

Also, she has the ability to gain a sort of Berserker Rage if she reaches a high level of emotional turmoil and stress, which wipes away all of the fatigue from her body and doubles her strength for a time(about 4 posts), but also erases all rational thought from her mind as she rushes forward to crush any foe before her. When the rage ends, however, she’ll be left completely defenseless as her body will simply stop moving, the strain of pushing itself so far beyond it’s limitations being too much for it to handle. Due to her illness, this can even damage her body the longer she stays in it, such as internal bleeding, tearing of muscles, etc.

Unlike most Ryuuga of the fire element, Tsume possess very good chakra control, and if she applied herself in the field, would probably grow into a fine medic-nin. As it is, though, this enables her to be very precise and careful with how she uses her chakra, to make sure she doesn’t use more than is needed, and thus, keeps her fighting longer before she blows through her reserves.

Tsume’s innate stamina is lower than that of others of her element, and thus, ill-suited towards the style that she has chosen to emulate. She often tires herself out too, refusing to pace herself and often paying for it dearly in spars where the enemy is able to outlast her initial onslaught. Her illness also robs from her the greater strength and physical ability of her clan, though she could still be consider a bit stronger than a child of her age would be, its hardly noticeable in most scenarios and thus makes little difference.

FOCUS & SKILLS

Planning to be a Nin-taijutsu specialist, she would spend a lot of the time in the thick of the fight, using her father's style in lieu of traditional academy basics, an all out offensive rush of speed meant to overpower the opponent and break down their defenses beneath the explosive might that the clan's special traits gives those with the Fire release. Despite her unwillingness to change her style of fighting, she isn’t entirely unwilling to adapt to her faults, learning jutsu and techniques to provide distraction, cover, or escape opportunities for her should the need ever arise, especially given the drawbacks her body inflicts upon her.

Her training sessions with her father have given her an increased tolerance for pain, as well as helping to mitigate the drawbacks of her frail constitution as well, though it still is a big limiting factor. Her skills with weapons are about average for one of her age, not stellar, but not terrible.

Tsume, after making the needed seals, wraps herself in a veil of flame that vaguely takes the form of a dragon, before propelling herself towards her foe at great speeds via unleashing an explosion underneath her feet to act as the method of propulsion. Upon making contact with her target, or really any object in her way, the flames blast outward in a radial burst, igniting any flammables or fabrics within a meter or so of Tsume, as well as unleashing enough force to stagger most people. The technique is mostly an opening for her to go in and tear into a foe, especially one that’s guarding, but she can also use it as a quick escape/evasion tactic if she needs it.

Description

This jutsu is what allows Tsume to be a Shinobi despite her body's weakness. By focusing her chakra as she breathes, she able to strengthen her lungs so that they can handle the strain of battle better, though she'll still tire quickly if not careful. All this does is keep her from coughing up blood by pushing her body too hard, and it's note something that lasts that long either, going up to about 4 posts before she needs to do it again. Due to the focus this technique requires at her current level, this leaves her open too attack from an opponent if she has no one to cover her or can't find a safe spot to rest for a bit.

Description

Tsume creates a solid clone out of fire, which is encased in a thin, fragile shell of her chakra. While the clone can fight, it only possesses one tenth of her overall ability, and as such, serves a more of a distraction than anything else. However, due to its make-up, it often makes for a more effective one than regular clones. Upon dispersal, the clones burst into a torrent of small flames and embers, both clouding vision of those nearby and inflicting minor burns upon the target, causing more pain than any real damage(unless they happen to get in your eyes or anything).

Actually I'm hung up with the clan relationships because it's an important part of why Nakazono is who he is. Oh, just for semantics and people not pining over google for hours or even a few minutes— genin height should be in the ball park of 4’9”, if you want a shorter genin they’d likely be under that by only a few steps and vice versa for taller genin.

@Raijinslayer Tropey backstory death aside, I'm mostly okay with her. Problem is, she's a little above curve power-wise. Maybe it's the combination of greater physical prowess, great chakra control and superlative Katon. 2/3 of those things on a character I can buy, but all three (as a genin, anyway) smacks of painfully outclassing the rest of your graduating class.
The stamina weakness is a good start, but it's also somewhat offset by her noted explosiveness.

APPEARANCE

A relatively tall girl at around 5'1, Kiri could easily be confused for a boy were it not for her low, messy twintails and her feminine voice. Her eyes are a cold blue and distinctly intense in contrast to the rather pleasant and relaxed expression her face rests with. Despite her kind expression and soft features, her body is a defined and trained thing, a result of many hours of intense physical exercise. It’s not hard to imagine her filling out with more muscle in the coming years, but as it is she merely looks stronger than her average classmate.

Kiri tends to dress in rather traditional martial clothing, from her baggy and ill-fitting blue dougi to her hand wraps and sarashi. Strangely enough, her hands have already started to develop callouses, and she has a few scars on her palm and knuckles. It cannot be said that she isn't a hard worker, and her body reflects that perfectly.

PERSONALITY & MOTIVATIONS

If there was one word to sum up Kiri, it would be ‘charitable’. Undoubtedly a result of her upbringing, Kiri seems to have a philanthropic streak, not only in a monetary sense but in the spiritual and mental senses too. While no genius, she is the sort to go out of her way to help a struggling classmate, encouraging them to do their best. While not rich, she will give coinage to the struggling—and so on. It would not be unfair to call her a peaceful idealist.

But how does becoming a ninja, a literal soldier, fit into the worldview of one who could be called a peaceful idealist? In short, Kiri is not a pacifist. She is a strong believer in self-defense on all levels, from the personal to the national. Naturally, she takes issue with being the initiator of a conflict, but has no qualms with an equal response to an initiation. She desires to protect Konohagakure and the Land of Fire, her beautiful home, from those who would see it sullied. She is her mother's daughter in that sense, if willing to be more proactive to reach that end.

Beyond that, she seems driven by a desire to escape the trappings of her family and the role which is expected of her, to branch out from the family tree and explore the world and meet a certain individual with the opportunities offered to her by the ninja lifestyle.

CLAN HISTORY

The Matsudaira are not a family of ninja, but a shrine family. Their charge is a purely spiritual one, acting as religious guides and intermediaries for the people of Konoha. In a sense they are analogous to ‘shamans’, performing cleansing rites and other rituals which are viewed to be vital towards the more mundane spiritual elements of the culture. Notably, the family structure tends towards the matriarchal, priestesses having more weight behind them than the priests. In order to defend their temple, be it petty thieves or something more dire, members of the Matsudaira family are trained in use of the daikyu and naginata from a young age. Although they are nontraditional weapons in the history of ninjutsu-based warfare, they offer a slight benefit to those untrained in the ways of ninja and samurai if used proficiently, giving them the ability to 'pick off' individuals and keep a safe distance. Although civilians, the Matsudaira are tough civilians.

It is not entirely unheard of for members of the Matsudaira clan to leave and become members of some other institution, but the small family generally sticks to their role of priests and priestesses. In fact, it is considered odd by the nation at large when a Matsudaira leaves their clan’s role to take up another given the long and dedicated history of their family towards spiritual matters. They rarely interact with the ninja side of Konohagakure outside of occasionally hiring genin teams to assist them with mundane and everyday matters, and have a more of a more noteworthy presence in civilian life. Any recent, extensive interaction with military matters have not ended well for the Matsudaira.

Aiga Matsudaira, the previous matriarch of the family before the current, was a known element in the world as a rather outspoken advocate for a peaceful resolution between the warring nations, but she ultimately met her end on the Day of Fallen Leaves as an unfortunate casualty— or potentially as an intended target. Likely as a result, the eldest son of the current Matsudaira family members, Saga Matsudaira, left Konoha for his own reasons. The second eldest, Iri Matsudaira, took up the role of matriarch of the clan with her grandfather assisting her, and the youngest abandoned her duties as a shrine priestess to begin training as a ninja.

PERSONAL HISTORY

Kiri’s family life was tense. Interactions between her older siblings, father and grandparents always seemed to have an air of discomfort which she could never quite ignore. Not long after Kiri’s birth, the Matsudaira lost a beloved member of their family— they lost Kiri’s mother. In a sense, she was the then-lynchpin for the family, the point they could all agree that they loved without condition. Without her, there was noone to mitigate the disapproval of Kiri’s grandparents towards her older brother, or for someone to break up the disagreements between her older sister and her father. It all combined to make a very terse setting for a family dinner.

She was raised in relative comfort, and without much conflict, but the absence of her mother and the climate of the Matsudaira household chafed Kiri. She attended to her role as a priestess-in-training, learned what was expected of her, all without as much of a peep of discontent from her mouth, but the feeling was there, brooding away.

The event which triggered these feelings of discontent to surface was the self-imposed exile of her older brother, abandoning his family due to the exact same feelings held by Kiri. While Kiri was far too young to remember her mother, her older brother remembered their mother well. Without her around, he picked up the proverbial slack in looking after Kiri, firmly securing his place as the ‘cool brother’ in her eyes. The one who had provided her relief from the monotony of her education was gone, and suddenly the world seemed that much more uncomfortable to Kiri.

She wanted to leave.

The desire to become a ninja was rather sudden, but it was the obvious path to take in order to escape the Matsudaira household and stretch her legs. Not only would she become stronger—and not meet the same fate as her mother, who could not defend herself despite preaching for peace— but there was also the chance that such a life would allow her to find her brother once more.

Upon entering the academy, it was obvious that Kiri was not from a ninja stock. Her control was less than adequate, and her natural chakra reserves were nothing to brag about, but within her was a drive and a desire to learn which compensated for those failings of hers. One step away from being considered a dead-last or an underachiever, Kiri redeemed herself from such a label through beating enough of her classmates during sparring sessions. Instead, she was considered something of a 'beast', only good for punching and kicking but not for the more refined elements of being a ninja, like ninjutsu. Such an idea hardly phased Kiri, despite the negative denotations, and she instead took it as a sort of compliment to her abilities. Nonetheless, she is still genin material.

INFLUENCE & RELATIONS

Within the village, Kiri is considered the stray daughter of the Matsudaira clan. This isn't necessarily a negative thing, but it definitely isn't a positive thing either. This does not impact on how she is treated, and is more of an afterthought when regarding her. If anything, the worst thing to come from it would be the association with her brother, the one who ran away from his duties at the Shrine and the Land of Fire as a whole.

Among her family, Kiri is regarded as a young upstart. Even her older sister, Iri, wishes for her to put aside her desire to become a ninja and focus instead on her role as a soon-to-be Shrine Priestess, even though she was the one who approved her entering the academy as the current clan head. Conversations with her father and grandparents are few and far between, as she avoids them on her own initiative, believing that they would have very little to say to her beyond their desire to see her 'return', as it were. Her father and grandfather, Furuta and Kitajo Matsudaira, are something of a pair of dour traditionalists, hardened by years of seeing people go off to war to see them not return, only for the war to then come to Konohagakure and take Aiga from them at the very end. Their desire to see Kiri remain with her family is entirely justified, but she remains adamant on her choice, something which has soured relations between Kiri and the eldest members of her family. They don't want to see her meet the same fate as her mother, but she fails to see it as they do.

In the Academy, Kiri has earned the nickname 'Beast' due to her near-savantish focus on Taijutsu and her below-average scoring in other areas. She's not necessarily unpopular, but she is not highly regarded either. Still, she offers what help she can to those who desire it.

Family

Mother † - Aiga Matsudaira(42), both a reputable priestess and a known, outspoken advocate for peace. Killed by Iwa forces on the Day of Fallen Leaves.

Father - Furuta Matsudaira (45), married into the family from a civilian family. A stoic historian and a dabbling martial artist. Disapproves of his youngest daughter's choice to become a ninja.

Grandmother † - Inoue Matsudaira (81), more of a warrior than a priestess. While not a samurai or a ninja, she could handle herself in a fight better than most. Was responsible for Kiri and Iri's education up until her natural death in the summer of CE 107.

Grandfather - Kitajo Matsudaira (85), not too dissimilar from his son-in-law, Kitajo is even more of a scholar than Furuta. Because of his late wife's more hot-headed nature, he tended to be the one to handle the more official side of running a temple. A long term planner, and fiscally intelligent, enough so to ensure the Matsudaira family was comfortable with what money it had.

Brother - Daigo Matsudaira (20), the prodigal son. Influence from his father resulted him taking to martial arts from a young age, focusing more on that than his potential duties to the temple. By the time he left the Matsudaira household for good, he was on the cusp of becoming a world-class fighter in his own right. Cared deeply for his siblings. Location and status currently unknown.

Sister - Iri Matsudaira (17), the current head of the Matsudaira family. Where Kiri and Daigo picked up elements from around the entirety of their family, Iri is most certainly her mother's daughter. A kind and considerate soul, she is not fond of conflict and does what she can to steer individuals away from it. Disapproves of her sister's choice to become a ninja, but it accepting of it.

Hakkyokuken, the 8 Extremities Fist: A fledgling style of Kiri’s own design, Hakkyokuken’s basis comes from the lessons of her brother, academy taijutsu and her education in naginata techniques. The idea behind Hakkyokuken, as put forward by Kiri, is to hit where you would be afraid to be hit, and with a force you would wish to avoid. While still a ‘work in progress’, Kiri believes that regions like the legs, neck and thorax are the most effective areas to strike. She is of the belief that the practice of this style will be additionally beneficial against non-taijutsu specialists due to the absence of a comprehensive guarding technique taught to students at the academy. The development of Hakkyokuken is a long-term project for Kiri, and she intends for it to be her legacy to give to the ninja world. To the end of using this form of combat, Kiri has trained her body into a powerful weapon with room to grow further.

FOCUS & SKILLS

Kiri has a rather blatant leaning towards taijutsu to a near exclusive extent. This is not because she is incapable of ninjutsu, but that she lacks an obvious talent for it like a child from an actual ninja family would. She is perfectly mediocre (if leaning towards below average) when it comes to her academy jutsu, but puts in enough effort to make herself passable. However, her physical ability was worth mentioning among her classmates. She took to academy taijutsu well enough to the point where she progressed beyond it, adapting more complex techniques and stances into her fighting style. Her affinity for taijutsu is a result of her brother’s influence, a not unskilled martial artist in his own right. One of her fondest memories is that of her brother first taking her aside and teaching her how to throw a good punch, one she thinks back to as 'the good times'. It cannot be said that Kiri is a taijutsu genius, not a natural one at the least, but rather she is a monster of effort, putting far more into her craft comparative to the rest of her studies.

On a slightly related note, if academy students were graded on their abilities with a daikyu, Kiri could have been considered a prodigy.

EQUIPMENT & INVENTORY

Being less than exceptional in terms of chakra and ninjutsu, Kiri compensates with this by being rather savvy and on the ball when it comes to making use of the standard array of ninja equipment. Her aim with kunai and shuriken is decent, and her ability to make a plan of attack with them is not half-bad either. She has a pair of weighted, red gloves and shin guards which she wears when training, not too dissimilar from the weighted gloves used by boxers, if heavier. Beyond the standard ninja equipment, Kiri is something of a prodigy with a daikyu, having near supernatural aim and ability with one, but this is something which will rarely ever be seen due to the nature of being a ninja.

On top of this, she is quite exceptional with spears and glaives. Both the daikyu and the spear were a subject of her initial training in the Matsudaira, essentially taught to pull a bowstring at the same time she learned to walk. Although unlikely to actively be seen, the skills she learned from her initial training have helped her in the creation of her own budding martial style.

When first conceptualizing Hakkyokuken, Kiri encountered the problem of range. In an actual fight, it wasn’t inconceivable for her to simply be outranged and punished for it, so in order to resolve that she began working on the first ‘complex’ movement of Hakkyokuken, the Charging Step.

At the core of Hakkyokuken is the idea of explosive force transferred through striking points, and the Charging Step is no different. Through the balls of her feet, Kiri expels enough force to send her almost gliding forward, closing the gap between her and an opponent at a distance. There is the obvious problem of it being a one directional movement, and therefore predictable, but speed of the movement is nothing to scoffed at. For those at the level of genin, the movement would be observable, but the problem comes with reacting to the movement in a timely manner. It is the simplest expression of Hakkyokuken’s base idea, and a display of how it could grow in the future. The immediate drawback of using this technique is the amount of strain it puts on Kiri's legs. As she currently is, utilizing abilities which require strength of such degree are bound to take their toll, at least until her body has grown to accommodate such a thing.

The tetsuzanko is a rather basic movement in Hakkyokuken, in which force is applied through a turning step into a charge-lean, directing the force through the back of the shoulder. The Flying Tetsuzanko is the same in principle, there being no difference in the fundamental movement, but it is done through the Charging Step Technique, increasing the force- and therefore the force expelled- behind the technique. To those unable to dodge the Charging Step-Tetsuzanko combination, they should expect a blow strong enough to blow through the doors of a temple gate. Its weakness is inherently linked with the Charging Step Technique, given that it is built off of it. Smashing into something with so much force is, much like the initial movement of the Charging Step, bound to take its toll if used without a degree consideration.

Kiri shoots into the air, doing a rapid flip forward to position her descent just above her opponent. When she is in range, she grips what she can (usually the shoulders) and performs another flip with them in her grip, swinging them with her and then slamming them into the ground, upper-back first. Naturally, this taijutsu technique has a not inconsiderable amount of setup, and relies on it not being done in isolation in order to pull of it. If done in isolation, it can be avoided or countered off by a mindful opponent.

A defensive taijutsu technique. While by no means a perfect defense, it is effective at enabling the user to block or parrying a single attack, even if it may result in the user still being harmed to some degree. Kiri covers up her openings in this brief defensive stance, allowing her to move and respond to an oncoming attack. This response is not absolute physical protection, especially from overwhelming ninjutsu or certain weapons and excessive physical force, but it does contribute to mitigating the damage of such. Taking swords as an example, she may 'parry' the blade, but she could still receive a cut. None the less, it is a decent attempt at a defensive technique by a beginner.

In the event of the blocked or parried blow being close range, Kiri can respond to Stone Divides Surging River with River Crushes Stone. She reaches out, gripping the front of her opponent, and drags them into a fierce palm strike to their thorax. The strike is intended to be done with enough force to do serious damage to the sternum, and send the opponent reeling backwards. While a highly situation based technique, once an attack has been blocked by Stone Divides Surging River, the setup for River Crushes Stone is essentially a minimal effort. The potential lethality of River Crushes Stone is reflected in its rank, riding the line between a simple martial technique and a straight up assassination technique. The conceptual idea behind it, according to Kiri, is that of a bow being loosed, and the arrow hitting true. It is her current 'trumpcard', largely untested but unseen by most.

◈ I feel like the incorporation of weights would be more apt to see with development of their jonin-sensei's instruction, but it is fine if you wish to keep it.

APPEARANCE

Nakazono is of average height and weight for his age. He is rather slender and could be described as effeminate even though he doesn't act like it. Nakazono has pale skin and blue eyes. Like all young boys in his clan, Nakazono has never cut most black hair. The longest part is currently down to his butt and to quote him "an absolute pain". The bangs and shorter (about shoulder length hair around his face) is more tolerable and less at the same time because it never stays tied up like it's supposed to. He also has his ears pierced.

For his age Nakazono isn't small. He appears to be about twelve when in fact he is eleven. It doesn't help that because of his clan traditions most people mistake him for a girl either. At least when he's at school he's allowed to wear clothing that isn't specific to girls. Though his formal Fujioji outfit is. Therefore most of time he's seen in just a plain kimono.

PERSONALITY & MOTIVATIONS

Nakazono is the youngest child of four. And he happens to be the least talented. Because of this he has mainly stopped trying his best. He's just kind of floating through school. He used to care, but no matter how hard he tried he could never keep up with his older siblings. Which lead to him deciding if he couldn't make his parents happy he'd stop trying. At least then they'd have something to complain about. With this attitude Nakazono sometimes ditches class to go do whatever stuck his fancy that day (usually reading).

Nakazono really doesn't want to be a ninja. He's thought about running off and hiding forever in a book store or library but he's never done it. It's mainly because he cannot bring himself to disappoint his parents even more than he has despite all of his protestations that he doesn't care. Which is central to Nakazono's character. He likes to pretend that nothing matters to him when in truth everything seems to matter.

CLAN HISTORY

The Fujioji clan isn't a big clan. A select few families joined Konohagakure at the founding in hopes of stability. Before that the Fujioji's were a wandering clan. In fact the majority of the clan still are known to be wanderers and have not settled in any one village. Because of their nomadic lifestyle their traditions are the most important thing to them.

The main tradition passed down from parent to child is their fighting techniques. The Fujioji clan uses a bo staff to fight. They have no unique nin- or genjutsu's to the clan name. Only their skill with a staff. Such skill some of their members have their name is closely tied to the staff they use. Sometimes it's even referred to as a Fujioji Staff since all staves used by the clan are made handmade by the clan. No one who is not a Fujioji is allowed to use the staff. If someone is known to be using one having procured it somehow, a Fujioji will be honored bound to retrieve it. This is mostly because a Fujioji staff isn't a normal bo staff.

A Fujioji staff is similar to a bo staff in that it is about 1.8 meters in length and up to 15 meters in circumference. It is made from a supple white oak. It's tapered from the middle so that it's thinner at the ends. The Fujioji staff ends are octagon in shape. Inlet in the supple wood is iron. Usually in a complicated design in order to allow the wood to maintain it's flexibility and durability. The secrets of the Fujioji staves are found in these designs. Some are hidden compartments for various ninja tools such as poisons and knives.

Each Fujioji staff is specifically crafted for the user. clan members such as Nakazono have plain dyed bo staves. They are for learning how to use the weapon and if lost, it is nothing to cause shame upon the owner. For they are just normal bo staves. It isn't until the clan member reaches the age of fourteen that they are given their first true staff. The design is tailored to the user and reflects their status in the clan and their personal history. It is a serious breach of honor to ruin or lose a staff.

Apart from their staves the Fujioji clan has a very rich tradition for raising their children. No child, male or female, can cut their hair apart from the prescribed haircut. Tradition holds that the first Fujioji, a woman, cut her hair like that and that's the way it has been ever since. Once a child reaches the age of majority they will cut off their long tail of hair to make everything even with their shoulders. All children are also dressed the same in traditional female clothing. Though in Konohagakure they are allowed to wear nondescript kimonos while not in the clan's buildings.

When a child reaches what they believe to be the age of majority they must prove themselves. In the clan it is called The Proving. It's a closely guarded test where the child must fight their parent. If they fail to prove they have sufficient skills, no matter their age, they are not considered adults. A waiting period of usually half a season is observed before a child may try again. If a child does not challenge their parents for a proving they are cast out of the clan and into the wild. They are given nothing but a plain bo staff and told to return in a month. If they never return the child is considered dead. The same holds if the child returns too soon. However if the child returns on time they are considered an adult and inducted back into the clan.

The traditional uniform of the Fujioji clan is a sleeveless black kimono with a gold Uraeri. There is a dark blue blue obi. The sleeves are threaded with gold string to hold them on over the biceps and below the shoulder joint. All Fujioni clan members have pierced ears and with the traditional uniform they wear a tassel with a golden ball attached. The color of the tassels is up to the individual and their status in the clan. Young children are given a burgundy color. Those of age range from Blue to black depending on their skill with their staff.

One of things that make the Fujioji clan different from most others is their matriarchy. A set of three Elders lead the clan in important matters. They are the decendants of the three original women who decided to settle in Konohagakure. The heads of the clan are all female. They also expect their females to be just as good of fighters as the men. Therefore women are not given any quarter in training nor is it expected. Which has caused a few clashes with the Academy because the Fujioji clan doesn't view some of the curriculum (such as flower arrangement) as necessary.

PERSONAL HISTORY

Nakazono was a child conceived from emotion. After the terrible battle at Konohagakure and the loss of so many people, his mother sought what physical comfort she could. And the result was Nakazono. An unplanned but not unwelcome child. For his mother it was reason to remain at home for a long while. Even his father enjoyed having a baby around once more. His brother, Kageteru didn't much care for Nakazono having been the youngest and therefore the most spoiled child. Or had been. After his dethroning by Nakazono he's always held a sort of grudge. His two eldest siblings were wrapped up with their their training and had no time for a baby.

Nakazono's life was set for him from as far back as he could remember. He was given his first bo staff about the same time he started walking. By the time he was four, maybe five, he was expected to be able to use it. It was also about the same time that Nakazono realized he was not the most coordinated and therefore good fighter. Before this point Nakazono had happy memories of his parents. But this was a changing point in his life. Suddenly from this point nothing ever seemed good enough. It was always "Kageteru mastered that when he was your age" "Nagu never had a problem with that move" or "Even Moroari could fail to teach you how not to trip over nothing".

His only saving grace was his Aunt Sanako. When he stayed late in the practice grounds, or tried to hide his bruises from the staff, she was always there. With a soft word or touch she had the power to keep him from drowning in the unreachable expectations of his family. She was the one who gave him hope that he wasn't completely useless. She was the one who smuggled his nonsense scrolls about completely fictional people and places. She was the one who helped him with his drills.

Aunt Sanako was the only reason Nakazono still remains at the Academy and is somehow going to be a Genin. Without her support (and lets face it, her disappointment in his lack of motivation in school) he never would have made it this far. He wants to do better by her, but he can't bring himself to do so. He fears deep down if he starts trying again and fails he wont be able to live with himself.

This deep, dark fear keeps Nakazono from really making friends at the academy. He smiles, laughs and generally gets along with the other students, but he doesn't invest himself in the relationships. He doesn't hang out after school unless it's coursework related. Because of this he knows lots of people but no one he would call friend and he's sure they all would agree.

• Grandfather (Mother's)- Fujioji Nobuuchi- 63- Nobuuchi is your stereotypical grumpy old man. According to the family he used to be really happy and kind. But after his wife died he changed completely.
• Grandmother (Mother's)- Fujioji Masako- Deceased- Masako passed away in 101CE with her grandson Koreshige. She was fifty years old. Even though she was older it was said she fought like she was young woman again. It's not known how she died but her body was found after the fighting was over next to her broken staff.
• Grandfather (Father's)- Fujioji Norihiro- 74- Norihiro is a stern man. As Yaya's husband he takes their position in the clan very seriously and is very concerned about the clan's honor.
• Grandmother (Father's)- Fujioji Yaya- 71- Yaya is one of the elders of the Fujioji clan. She sits on the small council that governs their particular branch. She's already named Nakazono's sister, Nagu, her successor.
• Father- Fujioji Kanemoto- 51- Kanemoto acts much like his father; Stern and kind of harsh at times. He's really only soft around his wife Moku.
• Mother- Fujioji Moku- 42- Moku is often distant. She spends a lot of time off on missions or training. When she's home she spends most of her time with her husband.
• Eldest Brother- Fujioji Moroari- 21- Moroari is a work-a-holic. He's yet to be married and doesn't seem to be inclined to do so. Instead he seems to be married to his work.
• Older Sister- Fujioji Nagu- 18- Nagu is the most skilled sibling Nakazono has. She is also the one under the most pressure. Because of this nothing she does nor her family does is ever good enough.
• Older Brother- Fujioji Kageteru- 16- Kageteru is much like his older brother. He just passed his Proving and is eager to make a name for himself. He often daydreams about life outside Konohagakure and sometimes wishes to join the wandering Fujioji clan.
• Aunt (Mother's Sister)- Fujioji Tsuneno- Deceased- Tsuneno was Nakazono's mother's triplet. She was twenty one when she passed in the year 91CE. When Konohagakure joined the Great Shinobi war she was one of the ninja's on the front lines with her other two sisters. She died defending Sunagakure along with Fuku.
• Aunt (Mother's Sister)- Fujioji Fuku- Deceased- Fuku was Nakazono's mother's triplet. She was twenty one when she passed in the year 91CE. When Konohagakure joined the Great Shinobi war she was one of the ninja's on the front lines with her other two sisters. She died defending Sunagakure along with Tsuneno.
• Uncle (Father's Brother)- Fujioji Narihide- 54- Narihide is the only non-fighter in Nakazono's family. Instead Narihide is a staff maker and a very good one at that. He lost his leg below the knee in 101CE.
• Aunt (Father's sister-in-law)- Fujioji San- 49- San is a bright happy woman. She enjoys drawing more than fighting. However that isn't to say she isn't very skilled with her staff like most Fujioji's.
• Cousin- Fujioji Koreshige- Deceased- Koreshige died in 101CE. He had been a Jounin defending Konohagakure when the war came to their doorstep. According to the clan Koreshige died a hero not only saving Nakazono but many other Fujiojis as well. He's still hailed as a hero to this day. He was only 19 when he was killed.
• Cousin- Fujioji Masa- 28- Masa is married to Fujioji Ama and have two young children. The eldest, Fujioji Ichime, is one year younger than Nakazono. Both of them attend the academy together. However neither of them have much to do with each other due to their being in different classes.
• Uncle (Father's brother-in-law)- Fujioji Tsunenobu- 51- Tsunenobu is thrilled with his brother (Nakazono's father) and wants nothing to do with them due to circumstances when the two were younger.
• Aunt (Father's Sister)- Fujioji Sanako- 48- Sanako is the only family member that Nakazono gets along with. She's the only one who doesn't put pressure on him to be the best. But she doesn't condone his laziness either. She just wants him to be himself.
• Cousin- Fujioji Shigeteru- 30- Much like his father, Shigeteru, also has nothing to do with Nakazono's family. They only see each other at clan meetings. He's married to Fujioji Suko and has one child: Fujioji Michiie who is twelve.
• Cousin- Fujioji Mego- 27- Mego is married to Fujioji Nakakane, a woman who used to be part of the wandering clan. She only settled in Konohagakure a few years ago. They have two children. One is seven and the other is five.
• Cousin- Fujioji Junjii- 24- Junjii is engaged to Fujioji Some. Some is their to Fujioji Gen, another of the clan Elders.
