It was strange growing up for Lorek, as he was the only one of his specific species he would see for miles. He was a typical orphan story, or at least he thought. He assumed his parents found him undesirable or couldn't keep him, so they dropped him off in front of some random house on Gran Pulse, hoping the people there would take him in. Fortunately, they did, and raised Lorek as their own. The eldery couple lived in one of the many rural villages that were scattered across Cocoon and he lived a peaceful, uneventful life. As a young moogle, Lorek showed promise in Black Magic, as he developed the ability to cast the three most basic spells (Fire, Thunder, and Blizzard) on his on. Although the couple was wary of his power, the let him practice it as long as it was in a safe environment. As humans tend to do, his elderly adopted parents passed away when he was 10, extremely young for a moogle. No longer tied down to the village, he went out to explore the lands of Gran Pulse, searching to further increase his black magic power.
As he traveled the dangerous world of Gran Pulse, he learned additional black magic spells from the various Cie'th stones all around the land of Gran Pulse. Lorek had plenty of time and targets to practice on via the numerous monsters he encountered. He traveled the land until he came across a small, secluded village filled with his own kind! No other moogle there practiced black magic, but they had plenty of legends and lore of various powerful spells. The most powerful in all of black magic naturally caught his attention, Meteor. Lorek decided to dedicate his life to learn this spell, and spent several years travelling between the village and the great plains of the Gran Pulse to find this spell.
One day as Lorek returned from his travels to the Moogle Village, he found it completely destroyed and ransacked. It was done by Cocoon, the high tech civilization that neighbored Gran Pulse. They were on a military campaign to take Gran Pulse's natural resources as they already exhausted their own from their homeland. Outraged, Lorek tapped into his latent magical abilities and entered Trance. With his powers heightened, he wreaked havoc on the soldiers who were looting the Moogle Village and left none alive. After his trance finished, Lorek was not left satisfied. He vowed revenge on the Cocoon and began to practice on his black magic spells with a purpose other than just curiosity.
