History: Fearing the coming end of days heralded by the y2k bug, in the spring 1995 a congregation of christian extremist formed the Saint Loyld's agricultural retreat in Elkhart County Indiana, Eli's parents chief amongst these founding members, gifting their considerable wealth to facilitate its construction. Members of the commune believed that mankind had grown distant from god through technology, and only those who abandoned the luxuries of the modern era would be spared the coming destruction.
For a while, the commune was a wonder to the young Eli. Days spent helping his mother and father in the fields, nurturing endless fields of green and golden corn and the jewel red tomatoes shining in springtime warmth. The modest education from the kindly reverend Loyld (who served as the communes teacher and spiritual guide) and close friendships with their Amish neighbors, brought together through their humble life styles and christian fellowship. He remembers, with no small fondness, the faceless dolls he would sometimes received as gifts from the young girls of their neighboring communities.
However, the inevitable dooms day soon dawned on the small community. And then passed with no fire, no planes falling from the sky, no screams of the unfaithful to cower from. Nothing that the small community had prepared for. Reverend Llyod attempted to assuage the more vocal members of the commune, assuring them that the day of judgement WAS coming as assuredly as the sun will rise. However, many elected to leave the commune after this, feeling that their spiritual leader was nothing more than a snake oil's salesmen.
The coming years were trying on Eli. The mood had decidedly soured in the community and they increasingly isolated themselves from their neighbors, much to his disappointment. His education all but halted as Reverend Lloyd took and increasingly active roll in defusing the strained air that permeated through their home, often through spiritual revere. And his fathers increasing agitations of feeling trapped by the community that 'robbed' him did little to help his home life, especially as the town coffers began to run empty. Even the simple pleasures he'd taken in farming vanished as the task evolved from spiritual duty to a necessary task done simply to keep the town alive.
Slowly he began to loath living in what was now called Lloyd's Town and began to shut himself off from the rest of the town, though he saw little chance to really leave. In what few opportunities he had to go to neighboring town for supplies, he'd marvel with almost childlike awe at what modest technology he could get his hands on (smartphones in particular were nothing short of a small miracle to him). And when he occasion struck, he'd sneak small textbooks in from the outside, though he'd often struggle with more complex subjects (especially those which were counter intuitive to his faith). Despite attempts, he made few friends on these trips due in part to his tendency to be overly blunt with others and somewhat anachronistic and faith centric views. He tried to break himself away from these tendencies, but even he would admit it was a painfully slow process, most because he could not shake the fear that, even for all that happens, that Reverend Llyod's teachings may very well be right. After many failed attempts (one in particular where he accidentally red lined a poor tourist's mustang while attempting to learn how to drive) he gave up, and now hesitates occasionally to speak to people he knows very well for fear of offending them somehow.
Initially he'd thought the illness was nothing more than a spell of spiritual weakness and did his best to ignore the scratchiness of his throat and the lethargic weight that seemed to rest itself on his chest. But when the visitors asking to take him away, he was more than happy to play it up in front of family. He'd thought of leaving many times, but only now did he have an adequate excuse. And by god, he was not going to let it slip him by.
Power: Crystal shaping: Eli is able to manifest and control a unique form of crystal with a soft green hue. He can change the hardness of the crystal at will, though currently cannot surpass a 3 on the Mohs hardness scale. The crystals are highly conductive of both heat and electrical currents and are slightly luminescent, but are otherwise mundane.
As of now the maximum he can manifest and control is 60 cubic centimeters of crystal, after which he needs to rest. Controlling previously made samples do not seem to drain him as much.
As his powers develop, he'll be able to manipulate much larger volumes of crystal with little rest, however (due to the material in question), he's not able to create anything other than rudimentary shapes (columns, blocks, spikes excreta).
