“Twenty years we’ve fought back the Far Colony Alliance. Two years straight we’ve hammered away at their bastions in Jupiter’s moons. Breaking their lines is logistically unsustainable. We’re running out of soldiers faster than we’re gaining ground. Veteran pilots, marines, and rangers are few and far between and our expeditionary fleets have limped home for resupply and reinforcement. The United Nations of Earth refuse to concede to the ultimatums of the FCA … but with almost entirely rookies and barely enough vehicles to supply this one last deployment … we are out of chances. Rookie squads will have no chance, even with our few remaining vets in command. The FCA’s victory is close at hand. Soon the unacceptable will be the cold reality.”

So it’s been a long long time since I’ve tried to run a group. My track record with it has been less than great, however part of that is because I put a lot of faith in my group players. I normally do not take the title of GM and hold barely any additional say over the group & plot than any other person. I’m just the facilitator. This time is going to be a bit different. I intend to run this group a bit more strictly than I normally would because that’s just what the structured nature of this story calls for.

The Story:

Humanity has colonized the solar system. Short-distance FTL technology is prevalent. As populations of worlds farther and farther from Earth grow, the colonies in the outer reaches of the solar system of Jupiter, Saturn, and beyond band together to secede from the control of the United Nations of Earth.

As resources and manpower dwindle to terrifying lows in the wake of over twenty years of fighting and a 24 month campaign to hammer through the Jupiter Moon Defense Network has left the UNE’s offensive fleets reeling. One last deployment is planned and should it fail, Earth’s forces must call off the war they waged to prevent the secession lest they risk compromising their own defenses. This last deployment is staffed by mostly fresh recruits. All branches have suffered. The pilots of the Fighter Corps, the rangers of the Mechanized Armor Corps, and even the marines.

Our story will focus on a single platoon of rookie rangers within the Mechanized Armor Corps, both in downtime aboard the assault carrier UES Halcyon and in the heat of combat against the FCA. Soon the recruits will learn that combat is not glamorous. A mech drop is nothing but silent apprehension punctuated by brief moments of sheer terror when the bullets start flying.

The Players:

Players will take the roles of the rookie squad members. I expect this to fill out one to two squads of rangers. At this time there are no plans for pilots of the fighter corps or ranking officers beyond the squad leaders. I am asking for rookie characters which does not mean they are unskilled. I will accept an underage child prodigy fresh out of the academy the same as I will some reckless hot shot who thinks he knows everything but failed his qualifications twice. What I won’t accept is someone coming in with two time mech ace – mech ace being 10 confirmed mech to mech kills. Rookies does mean no practical combat experience. That’s generally going to be the rule barring additional squad leaders.

Additional squad leader positions will be opened only when the previous squad fills. These players will also be my co-GMs so these roles will be less first-come-first-serve and more based on qualification.

I would like to ask for high casual from everyone. I understand I may not always get that, but I would like everyone to at least try. I think it’s fair of me to ask for at least 50-100 words unless the situation demands less.

The Mechs:

These are more practical, military mech designs. These are NOT gundams/anime-styled mechs.

The MR-7 Predator mech stands a mere four and a half meters in normal stance. It has no arms or hands to speak of and its mechanics do not match a humanoid skeleton at all. The MR-7 was developed as an alternative unit to tracked armor for supporting airborne infantry divisions. It proved itself quite effective in hot-drop urban combat scenarios on Earth.

As the war in space began and rapid drop forces became the gold standard, the Predator was the go-to vehicle for reinforcements dropping to re-secure fuel installations on Mars. On the small low-gravity airless moons of the FCA’s bases, it fares worse. Ever adaptable, it was modified for the low-grav environment. Maneuvering thruster systems were added in place of its jet-dash mobility system. Low-recoil plasma cannons were fitted in place of its hard-hitting ballistic mag-cannons. Its cabin seals were improved and oxygen recyclers fitted in place of basic air filters.

Even outside its element, its versatility as a rapid-deployment unit cemented it as a staple of the UNE’s extra-planetary ground forces and the rangers that pilot them are irreplaceable.

Dropping this here to gauge interest. This is obviously far from complete. The whole idea is still very WIP as I’m preparing more materials for an actual RP thread if this makes capacity. I simply care to know about how many people I should be expecting will jump for this. If you have any questions, ask them below and I’ll answer. I may compile a master Q&A list into the end of this post as needed. Thanks for reading!

I for one would like to say that I adore this idea very much and would love to join if it becomes a thing.

This seems interesting. Consider me as a potential player if it becomes a thing.

Three interested parties is enough to make not a full squad - that'd call for 6 people total - but it's enough for me to go ahead and see about making this an actual thing and not just a hypothetical. I'll get to work on the stuff that needs to happen on my end and I'll tag every one of you when I formally open it up.

Well if my notifications box would work right I'd know I have two more interested parties. :) That's one full group (I'd need to find someone to run the second squad). I need to do some work still to finish this up - it's not quite actual RP-ready just yet - mostly of the formalities variety. That'll be done either this evening late or tomorrow morning. In either case, a proper thread is going up tomorrow. I will properly tag everyone here and get a roll-call to make sure everyone is game still.

I'm interested as well! I need some Mech in my life.

Although I am confused a bit on the Mech portion. Two acceptable Mech designs are shown, but you already have some fluff of a Mech. Are we all supposed to use the MR-7 Predator Mech or is that just a example of how these Mechs will operate?

I love anything and everything to do with mechs; especially when realism and 'real-robot' mechanics are taken into account. I used to run a series of mech roleplays on the Guild, but didn't have the time or drive to keep them running for long. I'd be down for this!

Well everyone here is in luck because this is a thing now. There is however a problem: I have more people than I have space for in the first squad. I will need to pick up a co-GM to lead the second squad in order to guarantee everyone slots. At first, I'm giving priority to those who expressed interest first but I will only reserve spots for them briefly before moving on to those next in line. Of course if I find someone I am willing to entrust with a GM role, there's ample slots for everyone and the problem becomes moot.
