Name: Theodore Smith | Dirk Davidson Title: The Resolute Appearance: Standing at 6' 2" and weighing just under 195 lbs, Dirk is very impressive physically. His character would prefer to wear heavy armor most of the time, but due to high costs, he has resigned himself to cheap cloth until he can afford better gear. Dirk seems to have a presence that demands attention, and he speaks in a voice far too loud and bombastic to be considered normal. His hair is black, his eyes are chestnut colored, and he seems to take a few seconds to think before he speaks. His disposition is usually cocky, but he is more than willing to pick up the slack to help weaker players.
Gender: Man Age: 23 Race: Human Background: Theodore was born to a middle class family in an extremely poor neighborhood, and if the name didn't give it away, he was heavily bullied and harassed for this fact. It didn't matter if he came to school dressed in clothes like the other kids or he did his best to hide - they always found him. He was rarely included into social situations with his peers, and sure as hell didn't have any friends. He didn't blame them though - in the neighborhood he lived in, it would be social suicide, and would tarnish whatever hopes of respect the person who took pity on the bullied kid had. His parents, of course, tried to appeal to the school, but that was a failure. The school didn't have the funds to make sure a single kid wasn't harassed, and they already gave detentions to the bullies. That didn't help though - if anything, they made it worse. The abuse and harassment continued to pile on, until eventually, Dirk managed to find a safe haven - Video games.
Theo, as expected of someone with little social interaction, turned to sources of entertainment that only required a single person. Reading was enjoyable, along with TV shows and writing, but he truly found a safe haven in the world of video games. There, you could be anything - A chivalrous knight, a serious detective, or even a superhero! Most importantly to Theo, you could be someone besides yourself. After discovering video games at the age of 8, Theo was in love - he begged his parents for extra allowance to buy a new console, he started doing more chores around the house so his parents would let him stay up late to play, and he even began to mow the lawns of his neighbors, much to his peers amusement. He would do anything to play games. Over time, he began to adopt a favorite type of character, the kind that just sits with you right. A hero that would protect the weak and punish the wicked, looking good and dispensing pearls of wisdom as he did so. The kind of guy that was super strong, that could take a hit without even flinching before delivering a smooth one-liner. A cool dude that people all around loved and praised. The kind of man that Theo truly wanted to be. Whenever he played a game, he did his best to make a character like this. At the age of 10, he created his personal hero: Dirk Davidson.
The name was childish, and was picked from some cartoon character Theo can't even remember any more. But that didn't matter - Dirk was perfect. He was the kind of guy that was cocky, confident, and took all the attention in the room with a single sentence. Always the center of attention, the hero of the story, surrounded by cool party members and NPCs that seemed to only exist to make Dirk even more perfect by comparison. Dirk was always able to win, even against impossible odds. Sometimes he was a fighter or a knight, but he was always the class that relied on strength the most. Dirk was a paragon of good, constantly protecting his friends and defending the weak - even if they hate his guts. Dirk was trusting, he was charitable, and to Theo... He was a savior. Maybe even a god. This obsession slowly increased over the years, to the point where Theo wrote crappy stories about the adventures Dirk went on and commission art of Dirk.
Obviously, Theo wasn't healthy. He covered his room in pictures and pages of text, all about Dirk, the hero, the god. This greatly troubled his parents, who eventually signed him up for therapy at the age of 14. This was seen as betrayal by Theo - how dare they think Dirk was unhealthy for Theo? Dirk SAVED Theo from the constant pestering, gave him an outlet. Theo eventually managed to convince the therapist he was "better", and took down his art. Dirk didn't need that - he was a kind man. He would understand Theo's reasoning. Years went by quickly, Theo's obsession never grew better, but he did grow better as a person - He began to exercise, study more, he eventually found a job. Hell, when he managed to get fit, a few girls even asked him out. He never agreed though - They were just trying to trick him, make him look like an idiot. Theo eventually graduated high school, top of his class, and was quickly offered a decent scholarship at John Hopkins University, which Theo accepted. He never decided what profession he wanted to enter, but his parents were extremely excited at the thought of their son becoming a doctor. By that point, Theo had forgiven his parents for their betrayal, and studied for the medical field.
This was all a great accomplishment for a white kid from a poor neighborhood, and most of the college students seemed very accepting. In fact, Theo managed to make several friends that he honestly felt a connection with. Of course, this never impeded his love of video games and, by extension, Dirk. It was a week after his 23 birthday - the release of the newest and most advanced game console, fresh with arguably the most anticipated game in the world - Talrae! the game cost a fortune, but his parents knew how much he was anticipating the game. With a college kids budget, there was no chance in hell he would get in on the release day - this was, arguably, the greatest gift in his life. Theo called up Joe's pizza, the small pizza joint he had been ordering from for the past 10 years. He didn't want to accidentally starve while playing. He turned on the console, feeling his eyelids shut and the loss of control of his body as the menu came up. The first thing he did in character creation was enter in the name of his character.

Desmond sometimes wishes that when he was born that his father would have just disappeared or just paid the child support and left him alone. His mother was only 19 when she had him while still going through college and working to support him while his Dad partied and drunk his life away. The man his mother started dating a couple years later, and would eventually marry, filled the void left behind. They weren't poor but they certainly weren't rich either which fostered a frugal mindset in him, never buying stuff that was too expensive or pointless. Despite it all, Desmond could never turn away from the longing to have a relationship with his biological father and it would be the source of much misery until he would turn 18. With every promise came a devastating let-down later as they hardly ever came true. The horrible temper didn't help much either which amounted to much more verbal abuse than actual physical abuse. No matter how much he hated being over his house or the disappointment he felt too often, he always believed it was something wrong with him. Why didn't his father love him? It wasn't too long after his 10th birthday that he began to numb himself to the disappointment and sorrow he would feel by choosing not to feel anything at all. He believed if he didn't feel anything or get excited for new things, he couldn't be hurt by anything or anyone. The parts of his life that were filled with happiness began to slowly succumb to his new mindset until the only smile he bore was a fake act. Depression had set its roots firmly into his mind however he would try his best to seem 'normal' to everyone else.
Despite all the hardships his real father put him through, He was the one who introduced video-games to the young Desmond as a ploy to buy his love and occupy his time so he didn't have to spend actual time with Desmond. Desmond became instantly enthralled with them as they took him to other worlds where he didn't have to think about his sadness and could enjoy just being someone else. His father believed he had found the cheap way to his heart but to Desmond he just wanted the chance to escape, a chance to pretend like he wasn't hurting inside. Each year Desmond found himself distancing himself farther and farther to his emotions and thus developing a strong opposition to any kind of social interaction. He became afraid of meeting new people because he felt he was simply not worth their time despite not even talking to them first. Luckily he managed to make friends during school, mostly those who had a similar interest in video games. Desmond never tried to stand out during School and tried to be as nice to everyone as he could and was hardly bullied.Even though he was sad himself, Desmond made every effort he could to help someone else in need when the chance arose. He was the shoulder others would cry on while suffering himself, not wanting to bother anyone with his troubles. His shyness didn't seem to bother him when someone needed a helping hand and nothing made him feel better than to see another smile. His best friend, Robert, was a tad weird but he showed him the door into the world of writing and character building. Desmond was fascinated by the way Robert drew characters and made up an elaborate backstory behind each one. Endless nights of practice finally allowed Desmond to draw out his demons and write was stored in his soul. This proved to be more therapeutic than escaping to another reality with video-games.
Slowly Desmond began to made a mental recovery from all the abuse and suffering his father had caused him and his self-cofidence began to build back up. He graduated in the top ten of his high-school after struggling during one semester and was soon enough on his way to college to study Computer Programming, in the hopes of developing his own games to give struggling kids like him the chance to see a better world. He never fell out of the loop with games and was constantly getting the greatest and latest titles always fantasizing about the day he could enter the world for real. When news of Talrae, a revolutionary development that could allow for a full virtual experience, was announced he was one of the first to jump onto the hype. Desmond had played only a few MMOs before and never really got into any of them, but the chance to live in a different world was too great. Desmond made sure to tell his gamer friends from high school the moment he heard and they all agreed to get the game and play together. He felt an excitement he hadn't had in a long time when he slipped the helmet on and entered the persona he had been living in the virtual world all his life: Reylan

Nickname: Mr. Totes, Totes, Totally
Description:
No matter how close up or far away, it's obvious by first impressions alone about the identity of Totoro. He's simply a giant rabbit with superior strength. His height is around 230 centimeters which does make him appear scary to some individuals. Totoro, on the weight scale, would approximately be near 280 pounds. This does cause him to be a bit slow and sluggish.
However, his arms and legs do have amazing reach. Don't be fooled by the softness of his fur. Nobody would want to be on the wrong side of his tree-trunk of arms.
Hoppitidy Stomp: (100 MP) Totoro may have trouble dealing with some long-ranged characters. His method for dealing with these individuals is to pump some strength into his calves and prepare a giant leap. Whether it be a leap or a jump in the air, Totoro will send out a shockwave capable of dazing the enemies around him. It's an area effect move.
Rabbit Roar: (50 MP) Totoro does have admirable vocals. If he digs deep enough, he can commit to a ferocious roar which can scare smaller critters. This tactic can also be utilized for gaining the attention of a crowd and distracting enemies from the rest of the party.

“Custom appearance? But that’s such a waste of time. Look: long, brown hair; big blue eyes; five feet tall; slightly tan skin. Anything more? Randomize. Good. “Class will be a magic-user of course. Umm… Mage it is, then. So very general, but the promise of specializing lies several levels in. Attributes to go with that would be lots of intelligence and mana and—Wait. Brad is totally new here, right? He won’t care if I have some fun. Let’s have a bit of Agility. “Skills! This is the exciting part. What options do we have… Acupuncture? I can’t resist the thought! Just a few levels, though. Linguistics will be a usable skill? That’s terrific! Lots of levels there. Further down is… smithing? Yes, I think I would quite like to craft my own jewelry later on. I didn’t see an Enchanting skill, though; I wonder if that’s part of smithing or magic? I’ll just have to find out later. Only a few more levels for—here we go! Unarmed combat. Brad won’t mind, I’m sure; he’s only an amateur. It’s a small miracle he was willing to play at all. And after all the trouble I went through to secure two copies! Heehee. This really will be the best game ever. He’s so lucky that this is his first. “Anyway, I need some spells. Only three? My, but that’s so restricting! Is it limited by level? Or will it just be a matter of affording more? Some of these actions look useful, too, but… with only three, I can’t afford it. *sigh* I’ll focus on spells for the start. Jabs and strikes come later. “All done? Good. Now let’s see just how real this virtual reality is. I hope it can… satisfy.”
Today was the beginning of the world of Talrae. It seems pointless do dwell here on what that meant for us; a “death game,” as I hear other players mutter in the streets, is the simplest description. This is a journal, so I will record my own journey in this world.
Firstly, the swordsman I brought into this world is dead. I don’t let myself think about it—or at least, I try not to let myself. For the sake of whomever it is that will read this, I suppose I should be clear though. Brad was my boyfriend. I watched him die, and I realized even then that a part of who I was died with him—not because of what I felt for him, but because of what I didn’t. But again, I do not wish to dwell and so will leave it at that.
From there I met up with a pair of eager fighters: Fyaira, a rogue who seemed pleased with being imprisoned in the world of Talrae; and Jack Goldart, a tinker who didn’t seem to notice or care about the threat of death. We started a simple adventure together: slay ten wild boars. We did so, but the rewards for each boar individually were minuscule. Deciding grinding those starter monsters was inefficient, we returned to the city to restore mana and rest for the evening.
That was where we found another group of players who had readily embraced the challenge that is Talrae. (Rather, I learned later that these were two groups who had simply met up before I arrived.) I was eager to join the large group, but Fyaira and Jack didn’t seem to appreciate the crowd. That was there choice, and we’re still friends—meaning we have exchanged a friend request and can communicate through the chat system. In the meantime, I’m with a larger group of allies and we have a goal to conquer a dungeon beginning tomorrow.
That is my history, short as it seems. There are less noteworthy events: shopping for gear for the swordsman and myself; and again, going out this evening to purchase this book and ink. That particular endeavor led to something interesting: the non-player characters here seem to have personality. I met a shopkeeper and her husband, Francesca and Vincenzo, and I must aver that they are caring persons and pleasant company. Why would the man who created the “death game” create these NPCs? For that matter, why did he create Talrae?
Speculating here would yield little to nothing, so I shall forbear. The final event for the night was meeting the swordswoman, Aster, who is willing to help me practice my fighting abilities in the morning. The party is gathering at nine, and I have quite the to-do list for the morning before then; so I shall conclude my writings here with only this:
Talrae is amazing. And I have seen only the tiniest part of what we might do here.
The past two days have been tremendously informative. The party I had gathered with on that first night set off the next morning to raid a dungeon. It was a full eight hours of travel to reach the site--and certain members arrived late that morning, so we spent a night in the woods and entered the dungeon the following morning. Much to my disappointment, we spent less than an hour inside: three encounters with wolves and one set of chests were all we discovered.
It seemed the party’s morale hit its limit there. I confess, I bear some blame in that. The man called Dubstepp, who had claimed to be a mage (and, much to my vexation, still does) is in truth a trainer. Why he insists on lying about such a fundamental I cannot fathom. In the heat of the moment (and it certainly was hot, for we had just finished combating a large, white wolf), I lost my temper with him. Then the one called Karma attempted to shame him--poorly, I might add. That was effectively the end of our raid.
It should come as no surprise to me that people continue to be people, even in this new world. Perhaps it would be better to say people are even more like people here; many of the social barriers imposed in the modern world can be neglected and forgotten in this place. I suspect we shall see more and more of men’s baser instincts the longer we remain here, as more and more players realize old conventions are not being enforced. I dare say I may fall subject to such notions; the thrill of combat is something new to all of us, and I find myself enjoying it every time.
Not that I believe this to be an evil in and of itself. I feel that many people will find this time to be a refining period--a time to rise above what we may have envisioned on earth. Some will continue to lie and to shame, this is true; there are far fewer repercussions to face now. But some will step forward and offer the best they have, and that best will become something even better now that it is free of the needless rules of the modern world. Take, for example, Reylan: he stepped forward not only to be our scout moving into the dungeon, but also took up a role as our commander to improve our safety. Or look at Dirk who took the brunt of the attacks in our place, or Aster who readily threw herself into the battle. None of these opportunities would ever present themselves on earth. Each of us is slowly discovering a new self for this new world--or, rather, discovering parts of our self we never would have found without Talrae.

Background: Chari did not come to Talrae to bring her old problems with her and so they are to be kept secret from everyone. What she can say is this: The announcement that Talrae was now a death game did not even faze her. When Malgoth delivered his sentence upon all of them, Chari burnt the pages of her own history as well. From those ashes came freedom and a chance to live a life she know she couldn’t. To her, there was no difference dying here or in the real world. She wanted the danger, the adventure, the thrill that this game could provide and beyond all else: she wanted a chance to live a different life. Now there was no other home besides Talrae, and she was content with that.

Appearance: Name: Shiba Akabane/ Markus Moreno Title: None yet Gender: Male Age: 21 Race: Human Background: Markus was a student in college getting his degree in gaming design and technology which only made sense why he would buy the newest VRMMORPG on the market. He considered playing games to be a form of studying so he wanted to make sure to explore it and get ideas for whenever he was able to create games. He lived alone and had all the latest systems and games to keep up with the times.
For the first few days he was online and stuck he worked on getting whatever experience he could taking on regular monsters like boars. He was farming in an attempt to get what he would need to fight against floor bosses. It has become apparent though that it would be easier if he did so in a group.
