The Imperium of Man, the edifice of the immortal God-Emperor, was and continues very much to be a labyrinthine construct of rings within rings within rings...

With the tearing apart of the galaxy this has just made it that much harder to keep track of things, the Ministorum and Adeptus Terra try their best to make it clear under the gaze of the Lord Commander - that thrice blessed Primarch of the Ultramarines - but he cannot be everywhere at once and fighting all the wars on all the fronts, this task he must leave to the billions and billions of men and women of the so-called Astra Militarum, the Imperial Guard.

As with every other branch of Imperial authority, the Guard has secrets of its own that are the purview of the most trusted few - even the High Lords knowing little about the innermost units fighting their wars across the galaxy; all know of the valiant Stormtroopers, those elites of the Militarum Tempestus, but even those agents of the Ordo Tempestus are spread thin in the current storm of the 42nd Millennium.

This is where 'normal' men and women, though extraordinary individuals step up to the firing line, warriors of the Emperor and soldiers of the Ordo Nominis Umbra - literally 'Shadow Order' - a branch of Guard special forces made up not of orphaned and indoctrinated nobles, but of the flesh-and-blood of the Guard. Selected from front-line regiments, proven combat soldiers, they serve and fight wherever and whenever they are needed! Some fight for lofty ideals, some for the Emperor and his construct, but most fight for the soldier next to them.

You have been selected to undergo insertion into this Ordo, sworn to secrecy and under instructions to follow any order given, will you accept?

Righto, so, the forces of the Ordo Nominis Umbra is essentially like our own real world spec-ops in the 40k universe; they're all front-line soldiers, though not necessarily veterans, chosen for particular skills (heavy weapons operation, vox and machine operators, mechanics etc), without being so high up that they're Stormtroopers or so low that they're your average soldier.

They can be of any gender, come from any regiment, and generally be of variable ages but all will have fought before - perhaps not many battles or campaigns, but they're not complete greenhorns.

I say this in almost every Guard RP I run, and I've run a few, but I would like this to be gritty and well written! Due to this I intend to make it a small group recruited from canon Guard formations - more than anything I want this to feel like an experience, every post thought out and checked before posting, every action that can do to have a reaction (ripples on a pond and all that), to feel more 'alive' than RPs generally do.

I'm looking for level-head writers who can fundamentally use their own initiative when it comes to writing, who can 'get inside' a character (sounds a bit pedantic, I know, but it won't be), and have a good grasp of written English; I'm not looking for authors or novelists, my own writing lacks quite a bit itself, but I am looking for those who show their interest, show up when the OOC thread goes up, gets their CS approved and can stay the course until they want their characters killed off or tell me they've had enough.

Character Sheet

Please submit your character sheets by Private Message to me, myself and I - once accepted you can post them in the Char tab.

Name: Your character's name. A pretty obvious one, so enough said - feel free to make it 'regiment specific' I.E. Valhallans with Russian-esque names etc.

Gender: Again, obvious.

Age: Every soldier here is a proven combatant, but has also survived over 15 hours in the Guard; they don't have to be ancient, but I won't be taking any babies either.

Rank: What rank did they hold in their previous regiment? The Ordo probably wouldn't assemble an entire group of NCO's or officers, so bear that in mind.

Former Regiment(s): Canon regiments only, please. (Maze bought up a good point, by 'canon regiment' I more mean culture; feel free to have them from a Valhallan or Cadian etc regiment that doesn't actually exist. )

Speciality/Role: Are they especially skilled at close quarters? Xenos linguistics? The healing of others? Medics, heavy weapons operative etc. Put it here.

Personal Demeanour: What kind of person is your character, what are their motivations etc, and how do they interact with others? Also please include any hatreds, grudges, and so on.

Description: A written description of your character's appearance. No pictures. Please include here any armour or clothing as well.

Service Record (History): A sketch of your character's life and history before and during service in the Guard; feel free to lay it out as a list, a prose-based piece or however you feel. Give me three solid paragraphs (if you choose to go with prose), at least, please.

Equipment and Armament: What do they bring with them/carry on their person? This includes weapons; please note that this will probably be changed during the RP for specific missions and the like.

Miscellaneous: Anything you want to mention but haven't been able to cover yet. Secrets for the GM, particular habits, that sort of thing.

Righto, welcome to the OOC thread - which looks a lot like the Interest thread... - if you've decided that actually you're too busy or this RP isn't for you, please say so now. I prefer dropouts at the beginning of an RP than later on, this excludes those who actually tell me before leaving. They're alright.

Anyway, if you're staying, I've already started the first IC post, so once you've got that done and PM'ed to me (and I've given the green light) then we'll get this thing on the road!

If you have any questions then do ask me, for the love of the Emperor's shrivelled head.

Oshit, didn't see this prior
Would potential players be now going into Scions or Grenadiers? No matter which would a Kriegsman Grenadier be cool? Alternatively a Catachan with biceps powerful enough to stop a Titan's cannon?

No, the entire point - if you read the OP - is that we're NOT Scions, we're bog standard soldiers. That, and we're not associated with any other military branch.

If you can promise me a regular posting, then feel free to give me a sheet, of not then I'd rather you didn't. Regular as in at least once, maybe twice a week.

Krieger and Catachan are both fine.

@Jbcool
I was just a bit confused since I read my codex back to front and found no mention of the Ordo Nominis Umbra, but I wasn't 100% sure if we are Grenadiers or about this order's stuff.

I can for the forseeable future post nearly daily, but that is why I possibly picked the Krieger; having less emotional baggage in a character makes him easier to do (unless somebody decides to play the krieger as having repressed emotions come out but I don't think I'm up for doing that) it's much easier to just follow orders and kill shit, less worries in a post.

So what if I made my Krieger ex-Grenaider a close-up trench raider style of guy; carapace armour, two hot-shot laspistols and a chainsword being his preferred weapons or the two pistols being the ones of the variety with the chainsaws attached as you see for the medics of Stormtrooper models, perhaps along with a shotgun.

You won't find them, I made them up.

A Krieger is fine, but not with that armament, feel free to make him an ex-Grenadier though.

Well I feel stupid

So then could I make either a Grenadier Sergeant with hot-shot lastpistol and a chainsword? Or just a bog-standard Grenadier with Hot-shot lasgun and... that's it?

No need to feel stupid, although I do all the time!

Either one is fine, though just bear in mind that equipment/uniform is subject to change throughout the RP on a task-to-task basis.

Alright, one last question, about what time/era is this taking place? Like, is it earlier in m41 so I could say my guy was in the Siege of Vraks, or closer to the end so I could say he participated in one of the wars for armageddon?

@Andreyich It's the 'current (unspecified) year' in lore; so after Cadia blows up, really.

People seem to be getting confused, you can make up campaigns etc for their service record.

Also, I don't believe there we any Kriegers on Armageddon, though I could be wrong.

@Andreyich@Brocktree@Trivval@Superboy@Poi@CaptainBritton@AdvancedJ3lly

Okie dokie, it has been pointed out to me that some folks may be getting a wee bit confused, and indeed it has been an oversight on my part as well. @Superboy and @CaptainBritton, you may need to edit your character's history for this.

This RP takes place circa 111.M42 - this means the ending of the Indomitus Crusade and the Lord-Commanders shift in attention to The Plague Wars. Essentially Cadia blew up nearly 200 years ago, any Cadian since then most probably born aboard a space-vessel or on a Cadian colony world (such as those within the remainder of the Cadian System. You may even be a foreigner trained in the 'Cadian style'.

Two more points which may have escaped notice.

1. Your equipment and armour is what your character would usually use, standard issue things for them; this is likely to change during the RP, so I wouldn't get too attached to it.

2. 'Canon regiment' is more just about ethnicity (Cadian, Praetorian etc), feel free to create your own regiment from one of the canon worlds.

Lastly, 'service record' can be made up, the battles/campaigns they took part in do not need to be in 40k lore.

P.S.

Hopefully, assuming everyone is still on board, I'll get this RP going by Wednesday 29th; please do your best to get your sheet in by then.

If anyone has any more questions, please ask them.

@JbcoolEdited it so that the character's from a made up Cadian colony instead. Should fix the problem.

@Trivval That's cool, as long as you're still here then it's all gravy. Idea sounds...sound. Need something to break up these Cadians.

@Dogematix Decided to stick around then?

Still here. Life and other RPs have mainly occupied my time as right now, but I have began to work on a sheet. Was going to go Cadian until I saw everyone going Cadian so I'll have to see about another planet.

Right, chipped away a good chunk of the CS, but seeing that it is well past midnight, I'll hit the sack soon. Decided to opt for a more minor world (well, it isn't that minor in importance, but it isn't anything major and famous in 40k like Cadia or Tallarn, etc).
