Patrol (Military Roleplay In The 20th Century)

SLOTS REMAINING: 6

MOSs needed: Rifleman, Pointman (1 max), Grenadier (1 max)

Thought it was a nightmare, but Lord it was so true. They told me: don't go walking slow, the Devil's on the loose...

I'm looking for some patriotic volunteers to head out into the jungles of Vietnam. The story will be a series of Missions with some Downtime in between for the characters to develop some bonds and rifts between each other. This story will require a certain level of maturity, with a focus on keeping it real. As such, edgelords are generally not welcome.

Expansive knowledge of the Vietnam war is NOT required. But if you do know a great deal, do get in touch with me!

There will be some dice involved, but I'll be taking care of all that behind the scenes. All I need from you are ideas, originality and a slightly morbid sense of humour (most American and ANZUS soldiers kept themselves sane in this way).

Setting

  • This RP will take place during Operation Cedar Falls in a region of Vietnam known to you as The Iron Triangle
  • You will be playing as members of the 1st Infantry Division, US Army

Application to serve

  • Give a physical description of your character including height, weight, build, race and any defining marks. Please note that only human male characters will be suitable for this story.
  • Give a short backstory to your character including their name, age and origin. E.g: Are they an enthusiastic volunteer or a reluctant draftee? Are they a part of a the hippy culture? What's their opinion of the war, Communism and President Lyndon B. Johnson? What motivates your character? What displeases them? Be creative!
  • With 24 points total, assign a minimum of 5 to each of these three stats: Fortitude (physical conditioning), Vigilance (mental alertness), Proficiency (technical prowess).
  • Choose one MOS (Military Occupation Speciality): Rifleman (will need a majority of these), Pigman (M60-gunner, cigar included), Medic (everyone's best buddy), Radioman (dramatic screaming into the mic is encouraged), Grenadier (P-TUNK!), Pointman (hard guy who gets all the dangerous jobs), Marksman (special snowflake with a scope).
  • Characters submitted here are liable to change, so don't worry if you're unsure of certain aspects.

Official character sheets will be available once I have enough character ideas posted here.

Sup.

Radiomen were actually selected for their... unnatural calm tone of voice under fire.
(although the tempo to their voice was often a gieger-counter for pucker-factor)
-OH-6 was pretty amazing, as were their pilots, of which I had the privlidge to know one.

Things only got heated over the radio when the RTO eats it and the buttery-bar takes over the chat.
(or screaming over the noise of artillery)

Just generalities, really. Once lead got flying generalities tend to be ignored.

I'm using a ruleset called Patrol as per the title of this thread. The rules are a little difficult to understand in places as the book isn't laid out that well, but if you like war RPGs I do recommend the book - it will take a while to get through cover to cover. I'll be handling all (or most of) the mechanical parts depending how people want to play. Acting out in this game will consist of players providing their intentions for the turn to me and I'll tell them how it goes. They can then write a post describing everything they do in as much detail as they want, using the results of the rolls as a guide.

Hope this makes sense. I might include this in OP for reference.

Tempted to either take 'nade or pointman.

Probably armed with an M16 (The -A1 hadn't come out yet, so no FA) and a Rem870.
The M16 wasn't terribly bad, if you knew how to clean it.
--A can of WD-40 is still a grunt's best battle-buddy.

503rd PIR, right? Good chaps, got a commemorative highway 'round here for them.
-November 1965, kinda relevant. Operation Junction City. Lived up to the reputation they'd earned on what later became Paupa New Guinea in 1944 (which is how my nieghbor ended up living next-door, as he was part of the 23rd Div just up the trail with some Aussies).
