Also, @SanaChan I feel the need to point out- its not that Greatswords were so heavy that most people had to carry it on their back (well, I mean it is heavy, but its more a strain on your belt and pants than your actual person), it was more the size was unweildy, and depending on how you wore it on your hip, it would either stick way out the back and clock anyone unfortunate enough to be standing behind you when you turn, or the hilt would be too high on your breast and get in the way of your arm. Some of the heaviest two handed swords in use during the renaissance clocked in at about 8 pounds.

For referrence, a M4 or M16 rifle loaded with a 30 round magazine clocks in at approximately 7.5 pounds. Its definitely not a light weapon, but its not unbearably heavy.

That being said, I get that this is a fantasy RP, so real world rules and commonalities don't always apply, and its a cool look. Also, yes, this big ole blurb is referencing a singular offhanded comment made in your post. I like talking about weapons. :3

I remember reading how the notion that medieval swords were slow, heavy and unwieldy actually comes from a stigma created around the time when rapier duels and fencing among the nobility were commonplace. "Oh, look at those brutish peasants swinging their slow metal clubs around! Rapiers are far more elegant and civilized, I say!" Eventually swords were replaced by guns, but rapier/fencing duels were still a thing, and these 'experts' would carry on the perception that longswords and greatswords were slow (they were slow in comparison to rapiers, of course, but the difference was greatly exaggerated.) This belief would then worm its way into literature and eventually film, and it also certainly doesn't help that most of the swords carried today are either replicas or ceremonial.

TL;DR: The people who created the notion that longswords/greatswords were slow, actually barely knew anything about them and just wanted to hype up their own fighting style.

Aye, swords are actually fairly quick and nimble weapons, especially given their relatively light weight and good balancing. Sure, most European blades 'cleaved' more than they 'cut', but they relied more on the momentum behind the swing rather than the sharpness of the blade- though a weightier blade definitely helped with extra momentum.

Greatswords in particular are actually quite quick. With how long the hilt is, you actually have quite a lot of mobility and maneuverability with it, the upper hand guides and aims your blade, while your lower hand just drives it forward with some good old fashioned lever action. After that, the heavier blade and the length does the rest of the work.

adding on to this- not that fishing was arguing that rapiers are bad, but just fun facts: The reason why rapiers are such good weapons is is because of their length and mobility. Rapiers are light compared to a greatsword or a longsword, but they definitely aren't light weapons- they come in pretty close in weight to a 1 handed arming sword. However, unlike the arming sword (or other cutting weapons like it), that are balanced several inches in front of the hilt, the rapier is balanced very near to (or occasionally even on) the hilt, allowing a user to pretty easily guide the tip of the blade and thrust with it. That comes at the cost of being able to put force behind your cuts, but a rapier while capable of cutting, is really designed specifically for thrusting with its long blade.

While I dont want to take too much from Legend of Zelda, I very much used a lot of the 'Hylian outfit' from breath of the wild to describe Emil's current look. I imagine in my head the triangular marks and the designs on the hood mark him as one from Lumoise (or at least the Kanan region of Lumoise) the idea is for him to appear less like a mage- because magic seems to be very hit or miss for the people in Caradia- and more like just a traveler.

Edit: Fuck. Doublepost. Sorry x.x please don't smite.

Figured I'd play a bit to my own stereotype. If there was one person in the group who would be just a tad bit racist, it'd be my guy.

I'd ship them.

I'm thinking Gareth could train one or both of the bards to fight over the course of the RP. How does that sound?

Hi. Quick question, is there room for one more? Or is it getting to be too late? @SanaChan

@Not Fishing I'm all about it. Kassandra survives by constantly learning from and having gratitude for others, so it wouldn't take much convincing to get her involved. I think the not so serious bard being trained by someone with a more intense demeanor would make a great subplot as well.

If no one else has a problem with it, I sure don't. But I think you and the person that PMed will be the last one so the group doesn't get TOO big

I know my bio said that Sorus and Caradia are similar in culture, but I think I may retcon it a bit, to make Gareth's exploration of Caradia a bit more interesting (it'll be small details, mostly.) Maybe I'll give Sorus its own religion... yep, that won't create tension between Gareth and the fanatic at all.

@Not FishingSounds good to me! Elodan might take a bit of convincing, though. He's not big on having his shortcomings pointed out.

I'm going to give the newbies a chance to weasel their way in, but I'll be working on my post tomorrow and I should have it up by 4ish, depending on how incapable of managing themselves my students are tomorrow

It's pretty easy for people work their way into this rp because we went the whole "calling all willing volunteers" angle, so no one knows eachother so there's no breaking the ice with a clique of dudes.

We're just a good old fashioned traveling band of murder hobos
