Finally got my character finished. I'm actually surprised I haven't seen any other dragons yet.
Name: Zalek
Gender: male
Species: dragon
Age: 18
Room Number:
Rooming With:
Alignment: good
Appearance: In his dragon form, Zalek is 20 feet long from snout to tail (and he's not even done growing yet), and when sitting on his muscular haunches he's nearly 10 feet tall. His wingspan is approximately 30 feet, and his wing membranes are a light leaf green with three pinions, each having a small claw at the end, though these serve no real combat purpose. The rest of his body is covered in incredibly hard scales that range in color from a dull yellowish green to a brilliant emerald with a few even exhibiting a slightly bluer hue. His spinal ridge consists of a series of short triangular plates running from the top of his head all the way down to his tail where they taper out. He also has 4 horns on top of his head, 2 on each side, angling back slightly. Like the claws on his wings, they do not serve any realistic combat purpose.
When he takes on a human form, Zalek usually chooses to appear as a 5'9" male with fair skin, messy brown hair, and hazel/green eyes, though when he feels mischievous or doesn't want to talk to be recognized he can choose a completely different human form (though this does require he "discard" one of his other forms (see below)).
Personality: Zalek is a nice, friendly dragon, despite the trouble this often causes him. However, he is not a pacifist and will fight visciously to defend himself and others he cares about. He is also somewhat playful and fun-loving with a slight penchant for mischief from time to time. He also has a tendancy to ignore the rules when it suits his purpose to do so.
Bio: Zalek was born to a family of guardian dragons in a large valley. He and his kind have protected the inhabitants of the valley for generations beyond living memory, but the times of danger had long ago passed and the dragons faithfully fulfilling their duties were no longer so highly regarded, and people began to view them more as exotic animals than the powerful guardians that they were meant to be and had been in generations past, some people even attempting to treat the kinder dragons as pets or even to ride them like base steeds. The dragons would quickly disabuse the impertinent people of the notion that they would be "tamed" or ridden, but have never abandoned their watch over the valley and those who inhabit it.
Zalek has lived a fairly uneventful life in the caves surrounding the quiet valley. He was told all the stories of the great wars that the guardian dragons fought in generations past and of the crimes committed by the wicked forces who ruled the valley before the dragons came, and of the charge given to the dragons to keep watch over the valley until the end of time lest the darklings return and once more enslave those living in the shadow of the great mountains, but it has now been many generations since the darklings have attempted to take over the valley, and some even believe that they have been erradicated. None in lving memory have seen a darkling, much less fought against the innumerable hoardes that once plagued the deep places and would rise at night to wreak destruction on the forests and settlements and all that was good in the valley. Even so, some have heard stirrings from deep within the earth, and others have heard whispers on the wind, still others have seen visions in the fires, or ripples across the still lakes, and a feeling of unease is spreading. Something dark is coming, but what it is is unknown.
Zalek has been disturbed by the news of the coming darkness, and if the prophecies are true, then he will be one of the dragons that will have to fight against whatever it is that is coming, and for that, he will need to be prepared as best he can. When Zalek heard of the Academy and that he would be able to learn to master his powers there, he immediately signed up, eager to master the powers that will help him stand against the coming darkness and fulfill his duty.
Power 1: Elemental manipulation: Zalek has the ability to control the six primal elements of nature (fire, water, wind, earth, light, dark). He is most closely attuned to fire and wind
Power 2: Shapeshifting: Zalek can take on the form of any living thing he chooses, but he can only "store" (for lack of a better word) up to 2 forms at a time besides his natural dragon form. For example, if Zalek typically shapeshifts into the forms of a human and a raven and suddenly decides he instead wants to take on the form of a whale, he mush first choose to "discard" either his human or raven form so that he can only change between two forms besides his natural dragon form. New forms, however, are easy to acquire as long as he is aware of what they look like, he just needs to decide which of his current 2 forms he wishes to "discard" to acquire the new form.
Likes: raw/very rare meat (freshly killed (i.e. just minutes ago) whenever possible(yes, he can tell the difference)), flying, freedom
Dislikes: fruits/vegetables/anything supposedly "edible" that comes from plants (he is a strict carnivore), being confined, small spaces, evil, oppression
Family: All the dragons of the valley claim to be descended from one mated pair, and so they are all related, though after so many generations the relations between most are very distant, but they still mostly know each other and regard themselves as family.
Friends: Zalek is close friends with most of the dragons his age, but none of them chose to go to the academy with him, very few of them even believing in the prophecies of the coming darkness. Zalek also has a few friends among the valley folk who are wise enough to regard dragons with the proper respect and not attempt to "tame" or ride them.
Sentimental Attachment: none
Weapon: razor sharp, scythe-like teeth; fire breath; razor sharp claws (he prides himself on keeping his teeth and claws properly sharpened) When he finds himself in a confined space where he can't take on his dragon form, he will shapeshift into something else that has natural weapons, most often a wolf or large cat.
Other: Due to the behavior of some of the inhabitants of the valley regarding dragons as pets, Zalek does not believe in keeping pets.
