The Guy With The Boomstick

Simulated Cavern System, time unknown, lack-age of Danishes

It had only been a minute since the woman, what was her name...crap I forgot it already... told us; "Please close your eyes, and imagine yourself deep underground, in a cave that is eerily silent, except for the occasional sound of water dripping from stalactites hundreds of feet above you." and I found myself leaning back in my chair. I heard one of the others in the room say somethin about ASMR, another about relaxation, and then one, I think it was my inner thoughts say something about food. So, like any normal time I'd stand up to grab a bite to eat, I pulled away from my chair, and...

"OH WHAT THE- OW! Ow owowowowwoowowwoowwowowow…" I kicked a large hunk of rock as I went to take a step, sending rockets of pain through my nerves and up into the core center of my brain. Ow.

I certainly wasn't in Kansas anymore, not that I was in Kansas in the first place, heard that place is actually pretty bad, this was a bloody cavern.

"Wait..." I stopped clutching my aching shoe clad foot and hopping on one foot for a moment to observe the surroundings I found myself trapped within. She wasn't just kidding, she'd actually sent us to the cave described. Her voice briefly flickered overhead, like over an over-com, and then we were alone. Crap.

Lan, Cam, and Adam

"Lan?"

Another familiar voice. Familiar was good, “Cam, that you?” I asked nervously, “I’m over here.” I knew the ginger about as well as I knew Thalia, but anybody even vaguely familiar would probably be good to latch onto until I adjusted.

“I… I can’t hear you, it’s too loud…” came a shaky answer. It was silent in the cave. “S-so many thoughts at once… can’t… seem to be able to shut my ability down... ”

“Just keep talking so I can find you.” My first instinct was to follow Camilla’s voice; so I made my way over, treading slowly and carefully over the damp floor of the mysterious cave to try and find her. “I’ve kinda got the opposite problem. I don’t sleep, I don’t dream, this is basically the exact opposite of what my power does.”

That earned me a shaky laugh. “Lucky you,” Cam huffed, but kept talking until her voice was right next to me.

I reached out carefully and placed my hand on Cam’s shoulder. “This is weird for both of us.” I admitted, trying to steady my nerves. If I was nervous it would only make things worse for her, and then two people are panicking. That was when I heard another voice nearby,

“Oh god damn everything! There’s no food here! Goddamnit why!?” Whoever said it sounded pissed. “Heh...hey...nobody heard that right?” His voice softened somewhat, but it still sounded pretty pissed.

Camilla’s cold hand came to rest on top of mine, as if she was trying to ground herself. I felt her breath get steadier as she listened to the new voice talk, standing still next to me.

I chuckled at the newcomer as he thought out loud, “I think everyone heard you, buddy. Where are you? Try to find us.”

“Crap.” The sound of shuffling followed as the voice’s source tried to move closer, though from the sound of mumbled pain and grunts, they weren’t having the best time in the dark.

“I can see your form, I think,” Cam’s voice echoed in the dark. “You’re kind of under us but not quite; I think you might be like… just lower than us? Is there a ledge close to you?” She was clearly trying to keep herself together.

“I keep a bunch of exploration gear in my backpack, and I REALLY wish it had come in here with us.” I sighed, stepping around Cam to face the same direction; I left my hand firmly planted on her shoulder.

The voice mumbled something, followed by some rocks tumbling over a ledge from the sound of it. “Yeah that would have been nice, I picked one of the best spots to be, a decent sized indent in the ground. Lovely.” The sarcasm was evident in the voice’s tone.

“You wouldn’t happen to have the ability to form stairs? That would be handy,” Camilla commented almost jokingly. My presence was clearly helping her to recover from the mess that must’ve been her mind at that moment, or at least it helped her enough to focus on cracking a joke.

“Cam, will you be alright without me for a minute? I can help him climb up. Not exactly been spelunking, but I’ve done plenty of climbing.” The only reply I got was a positive hum from her. She nudged me to go.

“Wait, I think I have a feel for the ledge, one sec.” The sound of dust echoed throughout the cavern for a moment and then the sound of shuffling, and the dark form started scrabbling it’s way over the top. “Little help? I’m outta shape…” A hand, at least that’s what I could assume it was, reached out to me to help tug them up and over the final stretch.

I kneeled down, extending my hand and grasping onto… whoever’s it was that needed help up. I had a pretty strong grip for someone my size, advantage of the martial arts training.

They were light, that much was evident when I pulled them up. They stumbled for a moment, before catching themself and standing still. “Whew…” They must have sighed.

I rose to my feet, keeping their hand in mine and pulling them over towards Cam where I placed my other hand back on her shoulder, guiding the new guy to place his hand on mine. “Welcome to the huddle! I’m Lan, this is Cam. What’s your name?”

Nodding, at least that’s what I assumed it was, it almost looked like a minor twitch, they shook my hand. “Adam. You too. Thanks for the hand, I probably would have waltzed into that ledge before I saw it.”

“Well, you seem to have a pretty laid back mind, Adam. Or I’m assuming it’s you,” Cam said, only to continue with a slight edge of worry to her tone: “Sorry, I hope that wasn’t inappropriate. I can’t exactly help it, you know.”

“Our priority should be grouping up with the others. There’s not a lot of light in here, so we should link arms. Stay together, and find more people.” I advised, trying to remember the books I had read on cave exploration.”

“At least if we fall and land on something sharp we all do.” His voice sounded both joking, yet contained traces of realism within.
“Easy boy. I don’t think Erina would put anything that dangerous in here with us.” I lowered my hand from Cam’s shoulder and looped it behind her arm, hopefully a more secure way of staying together.

“Yeah, I sure hope she wouldn’t. We don’t exactly know her that well,” Cam commented, but she seemed to trust me well enough. “Most the clutter in my mind is coming from our left, so I suppose the others are somewhere there. That’s where most of the minds are standing, too. I can sort of see where people’s minds are, so I can locate them even in the dark.”

“Guess we’re gonna find out how real all this actually is…” Adam muttered ominously. “Well then, let’s find the others, the faster we do that, the faster we get back to food. Those tasty Danishes…”

Since Cam was the least blind member of our group, I let her take the lead, wrapping my other arm around Adam’s to make sure we were properly connected. “So Adam, what can you do? I don’t sleep so I’ve got endless free time for reading and stuff.” finding out what everyone was capable of seemed like a good plan, plus it would help keep everyone level headed.

Adam didn’t speak for a moment, before he said wearily, “Antimatter, or something, maybe somethin with atoms? I dunno, I didn’t study too hard into it. Basically I can break things up to a certain level. Or maybe I change the things within them… I really should read into it at some point.”
“And I thought my thing was creepy,” Cam said, but her voice didn’t sound mean.

“My Nana owns a bookstore. She could probably order something on particle physics to help you figure it out?” I offered, “probably not antimatter though. I don’t know a ton about it, but I’m pretty sure that stuff is bad news.”

“Might be something about protons or somethin’ then, I once destroyed half a trash can by staring at it for too long. My parents thought I was some sort of crazy after that. At least for a while. That was a weird day. Still, sounds like a nice book store.” He might have smiled, but I couldn’t tell. Cam had also fallen silent at that, just leading us on, occasionally stopping as if to check we were going the right way. I couldn’t tell if she had fallen back into her thoughts, or if she just had nothing to say.

“So it’s like...telepathy? Sorta?” Adam piped up. Cam was silent for a beat, but then…
“Uh, not really. Or kinda? Well. I can see into people’s minds. Mostly emotions, but also thoughts, here and there. I can see the people around me even when I close my eyes; they’re kinda like shadows, only white and bright. And fucking loud.” Adam must have snickered at the last bit.

“That last bit is gonna be super helpful in here, since there’s not much in the way of light.” I offered.
Cam chuckled like she didn’t believe me, but kept holding on to me.
“That’s up for debate. I mean I guess you’re right, altho’ you already know the drawback to it. It’s hella crowded in here,” she hummed, and I could only imagine she was talking about her head. I briefly tightened my arm around hers, a simple reassuring gesture.

Adam must have scratched at his hair, when the sound of nails running over scalp drew my attention for a moment. “Damn it, the cave tricked me. I came here for the food damnit! Not interactions! Arrrgh! Damnit...well I guess my cold demeanor is gone. Man… I was doing so well too…” There was the sound of Camilla’s breathy laughter.
“You can go back to not interacting soon, just wait a moment,” she replied in an amused tone.
“Although going to a support group isn’t really the best idea if all you want is free food.” I chimed in teasingly.

“The others are here. Except for the snarky dude, he’s a bit further away,” Cam announced. Indeed, there were noises around us. Adam’s fingers could be heard snapping. “Nice spy.” I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what was going on in this guy’s head. I’d have to ask Cam about it later.

I chuckled at my own silent joke before speaking up, “Well, looks like we’re here.” I let go of Adam and Cam’s arms, but stayed close by to them without wandering off.

“Anyone else hear the sounds of something I’m pretty sure isn’t supposed to be within this cave? Besides us?”

“Yeah, reminded me of the time I got chased by a guard dog after sneaking onto a construction site. That was a weird day.” I replied absently. “Not as weird as today, obviously. But still pretty weird; it was right before I met Boxcar Joe, actually.”

“That’s the second time you’ve mentioned this Boxcar Joe person,” Camilla’s voice observed. She didn’t ask further questions, though. It was clear she was curious, however.

“His real name is Joseph Callahan, but everybody called him Boxcar Joe the magic hobo. I think it was a reference to some story he read online? He’s kinda the first person I considered a friend, and he’s the one who told me about Atypicals Anonymous. He was an old timer with the group; left recently to go back to his family in… not sure where exactly, but they’re further west.” I explained, not going into a ton of detail for the moment.

“No surprise with a nickname like Boxcar Joe the magic hobo…only people with weird powers get names like that.” Adam mumbled.

“He was never super clear about the kind of power he had; honestly I’m not quite sure he understood it himself. It was something to do with questions, or knowing who had information he needed. He taught me a lot, not just about being an atypical but about how the world works. One of the first things Boxcar Joe ever told me was that if you need to find something, ask the rats. The people society overlooks, the ones that are invisible to most people; the homeless and downtrodden.”

Adam nodded at that. “Makes perfect sense. The rats rarely let you down. I should use that as a quote in my book…” He trailed off into a mutter.

“Sounds like he was either mad wise or mad mad,” Cam mused. “Gosh, what I wouldn’t do to be able to have a drink right now.”

“He was definitely mad something, considering he taught a 17 year old how the ways of the hobo. Every tuesday I take a backpack full of sandwiches to one of the camps around the city, sit and chat with the homeless. You can learn some pretty interesting stuff from them.”

“You both have good ideas. Drinks, and interacting with the homeless. They do have a good few dark jokes at their disposal.”

“Oh, I mean things like… not exactly secret passages, but ways to slip around the city unnoticed, places that the world has forgotten.” I corrected Adam. This guy was weird even by my standards.

“And me killing for a drink isn’t exactly what I’d describe a good idea,” Cam added with a dry chuckle. I remembered the earlier conversation where she had revealed her sobriety to Thalia and I. Next thing I heard was the woman’s breath catching, and her hand grabbed the sleeve of my shirt.
“I-I can sense some weird thing getting closer…” she briefed, “It’s not human… and I can’t sense non-humans normally… what the fuck is it?”

“Probably whatever made that sound. Let’s split up for the moment, talk to everyone else and try to figure out some kind of plan. Just remember Cam, none of this is real. It’s just a dream, a mass hallucination.” aaaand there I go, reminding myself just how alien this whole thing was to me.

“Possible human mutants in simulated caves and no food, things just kicked into overdrive. Let’s get started.” Adam said cheerfully.

“On second thought Cam, I’d rather stick with you for the moment if that’s alright. This whole thing still feels wrong to me and I’m not sure how well I’d do on my own.” I explained nervously.

“Not fighting you there,” was the ginger’s sassy yet shaky response.

Snickering, Adam’s footsteps moved away to hunt out somebody else to interact with for the time being, though they were cautious footsteps.

"Hate to break it to you pal, but I don't shapeshift, I possess." Joseph said to the metalbender. "And sadly, asshole is my default, so there's no changing that either. But you know what? I'm gonna play nice and help you out. Doesn't matter what that thing is, I could beat the shit outta it any day of the week."

He looked back to Thalia, a friendlier tone to his voice again.

"Well, I'm in a cat." He clarified. "Not much of a body, but you can't really be picky when your only other option is dying with your original body, you know?"

He did his best to raise a brow when she suggested that he of all people would have trouble fighting the creature, although he did find a little bit of amusement in the idea that he would be snuggling it to death.

"I'll leave those for plans b and c, but I could do it. You've seen this body, it's frackin' adorable. Still though, have you perhaps forgotten how goddamn amazing my soul is? I could turn this shit into a blade that'd have Guts asking me what I'm compensating for..."

Despite how much he could continue along that line of thinking, he decided to leave it be when he saw the expression on her face. She was probably thinking about Rina's usual thought process when it came to her tests, and while he had originally planned to just ignore the rules and relieve some stress on whatever monster she'd thought up for them, seeing how apprehensive Thalia looked about it made him stop and think for a moment.

"Ah, fine..." He said, turning once more to Heph. "Hey Khal Drogo, hold up a sec. The plans decent, but you might need to change it up a little. Instead, we're probably gonna be looking for a way out, so if you can figure it out, you might wanna alter it to something we can use while on the move."

He then looked back to Thalia, an only slightly irritated expression on his face from her request.

"So now you want my help, huh?" He asked, a smugness that could not hope to be matched by mere mortals in his voice. "Well, fine, but it'll cost you later."

He let her pat him for just a couple of moments, before her position was suddenly different, like an abrupt frame cut in a badly animated movie, and she was saying something about finding a way out.

"Ok... Kuuuh... Conan the Barbarian. That was Jason Momoa rig-... Yeah... Yeah that was him! Yeah, alright Conan, you heard Tali right? We'd better get ready. I'll let you know if I see the monster man with my superior night vision so you guys don't have to fumble around in the dark... You know, like idiots..."

Camilla "Cam" Moris

Location: Cave simulation
State of mind: Wait... a talking cat?!
Days sober: Almost one, although it may go back to zero after this

I stood close to Lan, not wanting to stray too far away from the only person that was even somewhat familiar to me. The truth was I knew none of these people. I was in a cave... hallucination, for lack of a better word, stranded with a bunch of strange people. One of which happened to be a rather rude, kind of beggar looking dude.
What really caught my attention, though, was the conversation happening a few feet from me.
"Hate to break it to you pal, but I don't shapeshift, I possess," a sassy voice spoke. Where did it come from? Wait...
My eyes dropped to the same black cat that had been sitting in the meeting room. My eyes widened in surprise as it dawned on me: this fucking cat could talk. Either I was going mad, or I was still hungover, but I could clearly see the cat speak.
'Well, now I've officially seen everything', I decided.
It made sense, though. Before, when I had closed my eyes, I had seen a human being instead of a cat. So somehow, this must've been a human. Possessing a cat, as they had so clearly stated. Well, he. It sounded like a man's voice.
A very bossy man, as it seemed from the way he spoke. Seemed like a bit of an asshat, I wasn't going to lie. Even though I loved cats, I couldn't say the same for this specimen. I shook my head. Great, an egotistical man possessing a cat. That's something I didn't expect to see when I woke up this morning.
"Thalia, right?" I confirmed as I approached the woman the cat had been talking to. This woman was the second person I was comfortable talking to, given that she had actually introduced herself earlier in the meeting and taken time to brief me in with Lan.
"I can try to locate the source of that noise. Dunno what it would help, but at least that way we could keep a safe distance to it," I offered with a nod. "Should be easy as long as I concentrate. I'd love this cave shit to end so we must take action, yeah?"
I was half lying, it wouldn't be easy. For me, specifically. I had hard enough a time controlling my ability normally, yet alone in a cave full of people who were unfortunately very loud thinkers, with very loud emotions. But I was a killer in hide-and-seek whenever I could get into the right state of mind, so why would it be different with this weird growly creature that was nearing us?
A growl echoed in the cave, closer this time. We were running out of time.

Angela Stewart “The Witness” and Valeria Nicole Alvarez-Knight
Warning: Switching POVs

Proceed at Your Own Risk

It was a lovely spot I’d found myself as I watched a parade of power and pageantry from the middle 1870s. I guessed at the time period based on the fact one of those powerful men I saw was W.F. Havemeyer and he looked as if he were in his third term by his age. Then I heard it, a voice from the now and they were addressing me, at least I thought it was me; "Hey there, I’m new here. Name’s Valeria. How about you?"

So I focused on the now, making that dream world I’d been observing fade smoother than a Hollywood transition to the the modern day. I had been in the old world, in what I called my fallback, and coming back to reality made me foolishly gasp so the pretty coffee-with-cream woman might think I was startled, which I was. You see, when coming back to the now, I get swamped briefly by the life force of the world.

"Oh, hello, Valeria, it's my third visit but Derrick said the other two didn’t count because I didn’t talk to anyone more than 30 seconds." I just blurt out like she knows who Derrick is, and only while dwelling on how spacey I must sound do I realize I didn’t say my own name, so once more I rush headlong into making a case for the Space Ace I must seem to be.

"Sorry, my friends call me Angie, Angel, but the girls at MCDougal's call me Sista Spooky after some comic book hero girl…my real name’s Angela"

I felt my brows raise and a bemused smile form as the woman in front of me gasped, as if astonished someone had approached her at all. "Uh, sorry for startling you…?" I trailed off on a questioning note and listened to her rambling introduction. "Angie it is then," I offered a short chuckle and hoped it came across as good-natured rather than awkward or nervous. I’m usually perfectly fine chatting to strangers, but I have to admit Angela here had thrown me for a loop just a bit, scattering some random info at me like you’d see a lonely retiree do with breadcrumbs to pigeons.

"Derrick’s a friend? Does he come here too?" I asked, letting my gaze flit from male to male briefly. As soon as I did, I realized that if he were there, Angie probably wouldn’t have been standing by her lonesome. I could smack myself, the idiot that I was.

Then, eager to find out more, I couldn’t help but shoot the question I’d been itching to ever since Angela introduced herself. "Why spooky?" There it was, the chance to find out what kind of freakishness the other folk got going for them. I know I sounded overly curious, but that was the real reason I had decided to visit. I didn’t want to be by myself in the weird corner, trying to figure out if I was crazy or not and which would be worse.

"Well that’s because of my talent, I can look into the past and I help the police solve capital cases. Mostly though, I work Lost and Found, pets, jewelry, children, and people with special needs. The spooky part of my talent is when you walk down a sidewalk, you see the scenery and the now, me I see what has happened there before and it's usually the bad stuff.

Lot of murders in this city and they leave lingering traces I don’t even need to focus on. I can’t walk within 5 blocks of the Towers."
I told her then realized I hadn’t told anyone but Derrick about the Towers.

Or the Burning of the Normandie where the Port Authority Passenger Ship Terminal; this city was filled with stories and for me, they were all there to Witness.

"Oh, holy fuck!" I exclaimed. There was only one thing the Towers comment could refer to. "You get to see the bombin’ live when you get too close? Fuck, girl, I only remember some from the TV and the panic back then was huge…An’ here I thought I had it rough," I whispered that last sentence to myself, now torn between relief that, Hell, yeah, this abilities shit was something others dealt with too, and guilt that I could feel anything positive-like at the messed up fuckery Angie had to be going through daily. I couldn’t even begin to imagine seeing murders every day, and what was worse, not getting to do shit about them.

"Damn…I bet you get to spend a lot of time in the past if you can’t control that BS, huh? Shit, I don’t know how you handle knowing sick murdering fucks are out there and then don’t get to catch ‘em all. Hell, I get pissed just thinking about it. Or maybe you’re like one of those noir detectives, all hardened and tough, calm and analytical but all bitter," I pondered loudly, then realized I had just spewed out whatever came to mind, and might have been rude. I can’t always tell.

But since I thought speculation like that could probably get on someone’s nerves, I apologized best as I could. "Hey, just shut me up if I get too pushy, I just never met someone like me before this, obviously, so uh, yeah, here I go rambling again." I gave Angela a chagrined grin, briefly looking away and down from her, making as if I had to put one of the short black locks of hair outta my eyes in what was pretty blatantly a nervous gesture. Man, that would be just my luck (Manners, Valeria Nicole I could hear my mother’s voice ringing in my head) alienating the first person I’d talked to here.

Strange, she focused on my nickname Sista Spooky. But then, maybe that would be normal for most people.

"It’s something I’ve had time to get used to, my first manifestation was when I was 9 years old. I put on a jacket belonging to Sally Fisher and suddenly her mom was hitting me and I was in Sally’s house.

It was the teacher that became my problem because she thought I’d cracked and so did the of administrators at the school so they called an ambulance…… sorry I was rambling about the past."
I said, realizing I was about to tell this woman I’d just met my life history.

"I know people think I’m strange, and it's not far from the truth, I am weird. I suppose it comes with being gifted." I was going to say more, but was suddenly caught off guard by a wolf running through the alleys of a neighborhood.

I have to admit, Angie's answer only confirmed my suspicion, or should I say rambling association, that the PI fit the noir detective stereotype to a t. Though...she did tell me yet more about herself. At this point, I couldn't tell if that was just some kind of a habit of Angel's or if she felt somehow more comfortable speaking to me than she would have to someone else.

"I don't mind you sharing, it's interesting stuff, yo." I encouraged her after she apologized to me. Then she said she knew she was weird so matter-of-factly, I immediately felt a renewed wave of guilt, coming and going like a slow tide playfully crashing into my shins. I ignored the feeling though, since Angie didn't seem to mind, much. "Oh, never-mind that. You know there's that saying, what is it...It's a normal reaction to an unnatural situation? Something along those lines. If you were all chipper and excited even with all the bad crap your power gets you, that would be weird," I reassured her.

We were still standing around, chatting to each other, when Dr. Slate started the meeting. I suggested we move to sit down, and we found two seats next to each other, intent on continuing our conversation. I introduced myself when it was my turn to do so, but Angela didn't. I wasn't sure if she was still there with the rest of us. She'd gotten that far-away look again, the same kind I saw on her before I greeted her. Was she seeing a memory of something right now? Should I do anything or was just waiting fine? On an impulse (probably a stupid one, but we can't all be perfect), I touched Angela's shoulder, saying "Hello?" as I did so.

While I was fluttering in Fallback, Val touched me and was drawn in; the scene I was watching was of a Wolf chasing a cat, but the former did not seem interested in eating the cat, and was instead simply enjoying the chase.

I felt relaxed at the scene, my expression neutral right till the moment I noticed Val and became concerned.

"Val, you are touching me, and if this all is too much for you, all you need to do is remove your hand or back up if you are touching me with any other part of your body."

As soon as I touched Angela, I thought I had somehow relocated back outside, only this time without my warm jacket, wearing only the - awesome but not winter-proof - tiger-print hoodie. I had time enough only to think that the cold I was feeling probably couldn't be countered by any clothes. The next thing I saw was a wolf chasing a cat in an alleyway. I don't think the wolf was me (hadn't I mentioned? I get to wolf-out as part of my superpower). It was quite the pleasant scene, but Angela grew concerned as soon as she saw me. "Nah, it's fine, for now. But thanks for the info," I said, flattered at her concern for me. I blinked a few times as I caught the never-ending darkness, a gaping abyss of nothingness behind her, and admitted (if only to myself) that her concern might have had grounds enough. But I wasn't about to get scared of something so simple.

I wanted to reassure her again, but Angela seemed like she wanted to say something else. However, she only let out a sudden high-pitched shriek. It may have been a short one, but I was alarmed at once. I saw her eyes rolling back, her body sag, and before I consciously realized what was happening, I moved to stand behind Angela on instinct to support her body weight as she fainted. She was pale - sickly so. Equally concerning was the scene shifting. It was jagged, as if someone from the outside had suddenly teleported us to a cave, physically and mentally.

I knew that we were actually in a cave because just as we arrived, I caught Slate's statement that we were all in some kind of a mental simulation. I wasn't a fan. "Oh, fuck this effin' BS, man, you don't do goddamn' crisis-situation team-building with a bunch of strangers," I grumbled to myself. Then I hefted the still unconscious Angela over my shoulder's in a fireman's carry, and followed the potent people scent, not at all bothered by the lack of lighting. I could easily enhance my senses even as a human if I wanted, but I had to imagine being a wolf without actually shifting, so it took pretty much all my concentration - and I still wasn't able to prevent both fangs and claws from popping out, so anyone who looked close enough would see the weirdness. Changing fully into a wolf would have been simpler, but then I couldn't carry Angie.

Eventually, we made it to where most of the others were gathered in a place that had some freaky worms instead of lamps or even torches. Some of the others were panicking, some were both rude and trying to order around, and there was even a talking cat. I wondered if it was a shape-shifter like me. "Heya, Ya'll. Don't you worry 'bout no monster, I can fend it off while you figure a way out. Someone'll just have to carry and keep watch over Angie here as long as she stays unconscious," I said, slurring my words a bit through my elongated front two fangs, the woman I was referring to still out of it and lying across my shoulders.

Lan and Heph

“Such a rude kitty.” I decided. Thinking, that would help me stay calm, right? I turned around in place, trying to take in my surroundings to come up with some way of helping. The dim light of the cave made it hard to see what was going on, “I wish those worms were a bit closer to us…” I sighed, then paused, “Actually... Hey Cam, I’m gonna have to leave you alone for a bit. I’ve got an idea.” I coughed to clear my throat before speaking again, raising my voice “I need some help guys, I’ve got an idea. If somebody has some way of making like a lantern or anything like that I think I can climb up the wall and get some of those glow-y worms.”

“Conan was Schwarzenegger, flea bag!” Heph chided the ebony wonder as the black cat sauntered further ahead, it’s dark form mingling with the shadow of the cave. It was pretty dark, maybe a lantern wasn’t a terrible idea... “Yo, exit or not gimme one good reason I should smash these shivs with a monster on the loose.”

“We can’t fight effectively if we can’t see it, that goes double for finding our way out.” I explained, feeling my way closer to the nearest wall in search of hand holds,

“We got worms and we got weapons, what more could you ask for in a fight to the fuckin’ death?” Wit was more often a shield than a lance as the breathing drew closer. Heph was all in favor of running as far and as far as possible but who knew if this chick with the cat even knew how to get out? “I’ll tell you what, you find me some more ore and I’ll kit you out but I’m not trusting my life to some stranger in a mind cave. This is already above my pay grade.” He called to the woman squat in the center of the cave. “No offense lady.”

“Ore? I can probably do that. What am I looking for? Iron or something else?” This would be easier with a magnet, but I was confident enough that I could tell the difference between rock and raw metal. “I’m Lan, by the way. At least, that’s what everyone calls me.” Finally, I found a few solid handholds and hefted myself up onto the wall, “And at least your powers can do something in here. Know what mine does right now? Literally nothing.”

Heph stood rigid as the voice pulled itself into a view, staunch refusal to turn from the beast’s lair a fine cover for being petrified with fear. “Call me Heph. If I die in her carve it in a rock or something.” Both hands tightened around their respective shank as he peered fruitlessly through the inky blackness. That lantern sounded better all the time. “Look for anywhere the worms’ light reflects off the wall, that’s how I found enough for these. Anything you find, I can use. It’s nothing like possessing a cat or magically finding your way out a cave but I will admit it feels pretty good being the only prick in armor.” Heph smiled a wary toothy grin as the breathing started getting louder once more. “Fuck it, get the worms.” His bravado slipping in the face of imminent danger, Heph corrected himself. “I can use some of my jewelry if all we need is a light source but if you lose it we’re gonna have issues.”

“Oui capitan” I began to scale the wall properly, making slow and deliberate steps up the slick wall, locating a surprising number of solid holds on the way up. Near the top of the cave, I found a protruding mound of something shiny which dislodged readily from the wall, “Think I found some Heph. Stand clear, I’m dropping it.” I waited a moment before letting go of it and finding a new point to grip.

The sound echoed through the cave as the gleaming mass landed, chipping rock from the precious metal encased within. The breathing beast perked at the noise and Heph could hear it drawing nearer to investigate. “Okay, okay, fuck, I just need a minute don’t let it get in here while I’m working.” Unceremoniously, Heph swiftly turned over his shivs to the nearest able body and set to work dragging the metal from the rock. It was a sizable amount and easily made a large enough container for the worms. Without glass there would be only slits for the light to escape but it would have to be enough. “Hey lady,” he turned to the now standing woman in the center of the room. “Yo, how do we get outta this fuckin’ cave? That thing knows something’s in here and I’d rather not meet it.”

As I reached the top of the cave, I reached out and brushed as many worms loose as I could, sending them falling to the ground. The job done, I made my way back down to the cave floor. “Thanks Heph.” I accepted the lantern and scooped the worms up, dropping them inside before closing the cage. It was a narrower beam, but significantly brighter than the ambient lighting. “Everybody listen up. We should form two teams, one for keeping that… whatever it is from hurting us, and one for finding a way out.”
