There is only one thing that can keep evil in check.

Magic. The power of magical girls, whose abilities allow them to purify darkness and destroy the congregations of dark thoughts and negative emotions that form in the night. These dark amalgamations are impossible to harm with conventional weaponry, but to the girls who have been granted the power of magic it is possible to destroy them with ease. And so the creation of magical girls, the process of granting these girls the power of magic, began hundreds and hundreds of years ago. But every hundred years, it was discovered that a massive buildup of negative emotions would occur. These would form an incredibly powerful beast, a massive black stain on the world that could cause untold devastation. Only through the combined efforts of hundreds of magical girls was it possible to defeat the beast, and some among their numbers even perished or were grievously injured by the terrible battle.

An alternate solution had to be found. To allow something like that to happen once more... it was unthinkable.

And so began the Hex Night. It was discovered that, while the regular usage of magic to defeat the ordinary buildups of darkness was not enough, an enormous outpouring of magic, many magical girls using their powers to their fullest, would break apart the giant amalgamation and cause it to manifest in smaller forms, as usual. The Hex Night, more accurately an event occurring for several weeks every twenty years, was created to push magical girls to their limits. An event in which they would use their abilities to their fullest, and the mass amounts of magic spent would prevent the creation of any terrible beasts ever again.

But the only way to push magical girls to such an extent was to pit them against one another.

For the Hex Night is a battle between magical girls, the prize being to wish for anything that the victor desires. Indeed, it can be called a battle royale, occurring once every twenty years in a different country.

This time, the Hex Night is to take place in the nation of Japan.

Who will claim the wish promised by victory in the Hex Night? A veteran magical girl? A new magical girl?

And is the Hex Night truly as it seems?




The abilities of magical girls come from a conceptual source of power. That is, each magical girl has their own Concept as a source of power. For example, a Magical Girl with the Concept of a fairytale as their source of power would have abilities based on that fairytale. Concepts can range wildly, from weapons to events to stories to nearly anything in history.

But this is not the end of the powers of a magical girl.

All magical girls wield some sort of item, be it a tool or a weapon or something else entirely. This item is their Archetype, something from stories or myths that grants them further powers, something related to their concept. A girl whose Concept is Cinderella could perhaps have the Pumpkin Carriage as her Archetype. However, when a girl first becomes a magical girl, they will not be aware of their Archetype. They must figure out what their Archetype's nature is on their own. This will unlock their most powerful abilities.

The Power of a magical girl's Concept and Archetype are influenced by a variety of factors. Age and fame are strong influences, but so to is the imagination inspired by them. This allows for more recent concepts, such as Wonderland, to be quite powerful in their own right.

The powers exhibited by magical girls are vast and broad. Some are straightforward, whereas some are more strange and difficult to use.

And all of them will be tested in the Hex Night of Magical Girls.




+~Rules of the Hex Night~+
Battle May Commence at Any Time.
However, these battles must be kept from the eyes of those who have not been gifted with magic.
All magical girls are granted a single glass orb that symbolizes their participation in the Hex Night. This glass orb is known as their Hex Symbol.
A Magical Girl is considered defeated when she is unable to continue fighting, or she has surrendered. Once a magical girl has been defeated, the victor is granted their Hex Symbol so they may destroy it.
The destruction of her Hex Symbol removes a magical girl from consideration as a potential victor.
A magical girl who has been defeated may continue to participate in the Hex Night as an assistant to another magical girl.
The killing of humans is strictly prohibited. Any violation of this rule will result in immediate expulsion from the Hex Night as well as the removal of all abilities as a magical girl.

What are the specific rules to becoming a magical girl in this universe, or does that not really matter? Want to know so I can get an idea of what the backstory should be like.

Also, what makes the 'skills' section different from the 'abilities' section?

@Ammokkx: Magical girls can come from all walks of life, it's based on a few different things. There's an inherent potential that varies from girl to girl, but also a girl who is determined, has a lot of drive, that sort of thing, they tend to make good magical girl candidates.

Basically, it can be any girl, so don't worry about that part too much.

Skills are basically mundane things your character is good at, abilities is magical girl powers.

Also...

  • Name: Hoshino Hikari
  • Age: 16
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: Like her magical girl appearance, except obviously in a more normal outfit without a massive hammer. Her hair is dark brown, and her eyes are also brown. She is very short and child-like in appearance.
  • Personality: A stubborn girl with a hot temper, Hikari seems like the aggressive and irritable type through and through. It would be difficult to claim otherwise, given that she's the type to get angry at others easily and is swift to complain or deride them for perceived stupidity. However, in spite of all these facts, deep down Hikari has another side. Her stubborn nature makes her dedicated to ideas she adheres herself to, and deep down she has a genuine desire to help people. Deep down, Hikari has dreamed of being a hero who can save others. As a result, she'd jump at the option to become one, even if she doesn't always thing other people are particularly intelligent either. Hikari is fond of sweets, and baked goods as well, and can sometimes be persuaded by these things. Her extremely stubborn nature makes it nearly impossible to make her genuinely give up on anything that she's dedicated herself to, as well. In spite of this irritable and stubborn nature, Hikari is easily flustered and has a jealous streak towards anyone taller and more mature then herself. Indeed, she hates being mistaken for a child.
  • Skills: Hikari is decent at physical activities and does well in most of her classes.
  • Brief Backstory: Hikari was born into a fairly normal family. For much of her early life she was fairly average as well. However, when she was only eight years old, she nearly lost her father in a car accident. Trapped under the wreckage, she thought she was going to die, until someone saved her and her father. Dazed and confused, she didn't figure out who. But someone had pulled her out before anyone else arrived. This incident left a strong impression on her. She had been relatively unscathed, and while her father's legs were damaged he managed to survive and regain most of the use of them. As a result, she was left with a desire to someday return the favor. In spite of this, that didn't change her rather surly disposition. But it did give her a dream deep down... A dream she would jump at the chance to fulfill.
    • Magical Girl Appearance: Design Works!, Neutral Pose!, A bit older but a colored image to give an idea
    • Concept: Festivals
    • Archetype: Uchide no Kozuchi(Miracle Mallet)
    • Abilities: Hikari is a strong and fast melee-based magical girl. Her abilities are largely centered on her hammer. She can create barriers as well, but most of her focus is purely on overwhelming melee attacks. Her hammer can change in size and destructive force. Additionally, the rear of her hammer can fire off fireworks, both as a booster for her hammer strikes as well as an attack in its own right. She can also power up her melee attacks in mid-swing by yelling 'Tamaya', which intensifies her fireworks. Her attacks include...
      • Tanabata Shooting Star: Hikari's hammer erupts with fireworks that surround her body, sending her rocketing forward to close distance, break through obstacles, and deliver a crushing downward blow with an enlarged hammer.
      • Hanami Blossom Breaker: A barrier-breaking strike, the head of Hikari's hammer is accelerated with a blast of powerful fireworks and swung directly into the target barrier. The impact causes it to shatter in a manner that resembles a flower.
      She does not yet possess her strongest attacks, due to being unaware of her Archetype.

@VitaVitaAR - I have a quick question: Should WIP's be posted to the OOC here or sent to you via PM for early review? The feelings on that differ from thread to thread so I'm just asking to be safe. I have my character mostly finished and I plan to finish her just as soon as I get some rest since my brain is screaming at me for sleep but I want to let it be known what I've written up for the sake of others.

Edit: I must rest for now so I'll leave this WIP here. There's not much left, just the appearance and a small section of the abilities. I'll have the rest up as early as I can when I wake.

Personality: Sonya is a quiet, withdrawn girl. Despite her past, she is trusting when given cause and hopeful in any situation despite having such feelings dashed to pieces repeatedly. Recently she has made progress in coming out of her shell, making friends and interacting with others.
Skills: She is used to having to keep a low profile, moving quietly in environments where people that might be around might not have the best intentions. Sonya is very self sufficient, having little trouble surviving on her own.
Brief Backstory:
The optimistic girl relished every opportunity to help others and as a magical girl she exercised her freedom to defend ordinary humans from the darkness that stalked the night. She was a mighty avenging archangel that struck out with righteous fury.

But things changed. All too quickly her world was shattered with the fury and fire of mankind. War erupted throughout her homeland. With the conflict came a greater surge of darkness than ever before. But even with her abilities she failed to have any power during the day, when the most dire threat was mankind. The pressure of the escalating conflict combined with her inability to help in any lasting way drove her to the edge, and she fled the area.

Sonya ended up a refugee in another country, eventually making her way to Japan and ending up with a foster family. The year since has been a period of healing, letting her rebuild herself into someone that can function in society.

Magical Girl Appearance: Angel of Destruction
Concept: Destruction
Archetype: Abaddon
Abilities: Sonya specializes in spectacularly destructive ranged attacks. Outside of the Abyss she is restricted in how she projects this power to a fraction of her normal output. With no restrictions in place and no danger of civilian casualties she is easilly capable of annihilating large buildings and entire city blocks. In her left hand she carries the Key Of The Abyss and he right wields Apollyon, The Destroyer.

Gate of Abaddon: The Key is stabbed into the ground, pulling those nearby into the Abyss when activated, a place of ice and fire that mirrors the real world. It can be entered or left at will by touching the Key.
Blade of Destruction: A beam of multicoloured, distorted light surges from her weapon, causing damage in a straight line or on a plane that follows her point of aim.
Rage of Angels: Multiple arcs of destructive energy burst out from her body at varying angles.
Fires of the Abyss: cleansing fire rains from the sky, obliterating everything in sight. This is only usable in the Abyss for obvious reasons.

• Age: 20
• Gender: Female
• Appearance: Brown Hair, with blue eyes, a long navy-blue skirt, long sleeved button up shirt, and a pair of Green Gloves that she wears frequently. She has a slim frame but is quite tall (6’)
• Personality: She is a very sensible person who is the type to be a teacher’s pet in a class room. She absolutely loves the colour of red she thinks it deeply mystifying and always admired it. Her
• Skills: She is amazing a using a surgeon’s tools for incredible accuracy, and has extensive knowledge of human and most animal anatomy.
• Brief Backstory: She comes from a lower middle-class family who weren’t exactly neglectful but were a lot more focused on their jobs then on her. Although she understood this and made do with the large collection of books that lived in the house. While going about her usual activity’s she found a book Simply called ‘The Anatomy of The Human Body Compared to Animals’ This title interested her to no end. She simply adored this book and all its contents, so much so that after reading it through several times she began her search for all books related even in the slightest to that. The first book may have impacted her for a bit but after reading all the books about anything remotely related to the first book she decided, Her goal in life would be to become an amazing surgeon
o Magical Girl Appearance: this is the best example of what i could find on deviant art
o Concept: English history (jack the ripper)
o Archetype: Jack the rippers medical tools (scalpels, syringes of poison, a lot of throwing knifes, paralysing smoke bombs and 1 very sharp very large knife
o Abilities: Zenith is a support type debuffer with an emphasis on range. Her normal weapons are her scalpels of which are coated in 3 types of poison that can be changed at will by her. She has large supply of these (but can run out after about 70 scalpels have been thrown but after their use is over the scalpels slowly disappear

-Poisoned scalpels: She can change her scalpel's type of poison but must be hold them or must have been touched by her within the last hour, these poisons are: deadly poisons, paralyses poison ,and aggravating poison (which causes wounds to bleed more and hurt more)

- Scalpel regeneration: When she throws scalpels after they have no use they disintegrate into small particles and after a small while come back to her

- Smoke screen: She has smoke bombs that are able to explode at her will and do not effect her, these smoke bombs consist of Poisonous smoke bombs, paralyses smoke bombs, condensing smoke bomb (which condenses into viscous acid after someone enters the smoke)

  • Name: Musashi Tomoe
  • Age: 14
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: Tomoe is somewhat short for her age, with raven-colored hair and brown eyes, and needs to wear glasses thanks to having naturally bad eyesight. Her skin seems perpetually pale, and never seems to burn or tan. Outside of school, she will rarely wear her uniform, preferring to wear shorts, a tank top, and a light jacket.
  • Personality: Usually fairly quiet and standoffish, Tomoe is something of a tomboy. She enjoys anime, manga, and video games, and has a deep-rooted love of westerns, especially of the Macaroni Western variety. However, when she changes into her magical girl form, all of Tomoe's shyness is tossed out the window. She becomes more forward and aggressive, and is more than willing to pick a fight if pushed far enough. Regardless of her form, Tomoe has a strong sense of justice and fairness, to the point that she'll never directly attack someone weaker than her, and in her magical girl form, she won't attack someone with their back turned (even though this has turned out poorly for her in the past). Being somewhat shorter and more petite than her peers is something of a sore spot for her.
  • Skills: While not exceptionally strong or fast, Tomoe is extremely agile, with higher than average reflexes than her peers.
  • Brief Backstory: Tomoe came from a fairly normal family, and lived a rather normal life until she was five years old, when her mother vanished. No note, no signs of struggle, she was just gone. The missing person investigation
    turned up nothing. In the small town they lived in, people quickly went from concerned and sympathetic to judgemental. Gossip spread like wildfire: she'd run away with an old boyfriend, Mr. Musashi had chopped her up and burned her remains. It got so bad that Tomoe's father decided they should move. In this period without any friends, she grew closer with her father, who introduced Tomoe to his love of Western films, especially the Spaghetti Western. As she grew older, she realized that nobody her age liked the genre, if they even knew about it st all. So she found other hobbies that, while not "feminine" in the traditional sense, still helped her find friends. It was a little over a year ago that she obtained her abilities after she was attacked on her way home from school and was hospitalized for a short time.
    • Magical Girl Appearance: Image; while in this form, her vision is greatly enhanced from normal
    • Concept: Gunslingers
    • Archetype: Shishanote (Dead Man's Hand)
    • Abilities: Skilled gunfighter, and wields a pair of magical sixguns she calls "Aces and Eights", as well as a shotgun she's dubbed "Queen of Clubs". Being a ranged fighter, she is a very weak in melee combat. Additionally, while in her magical girl form, Tomoe's vision is strengthened, making her an excellent shot with her weapons to incredible ranges. She is not aware of her archetype at this time.

@Zedling: Er... that name is kind of weird. ^^; Also, while there's certainly magical girls coming from other countries, I'd like to remind everyone that it makes the most sense to have a majority of Japanese magical girls, and that girls from other countries should have some explanation behind them going to Japan for the Hex Night.

  • Personality: Shy and reserved, Fuyuko prefers to observe from a distance rather than actively participate in events. While polite, sometimes excessively so, such formality can be misinterpreted as coldness, and her timid personality doesn't help. Because she goes out of her way to avoid starting or aggravating conflicts, and doesn't like to fight other magical girls, some people wonder why she's even taking part in the Hex Night. The truth is, despite her usually gentle nature, she's no pushover. Just like a soft snowfall can become a fierce blizzard, Fuyuko goes all out to protect others, both from monsters and from more mundane causes of harm. The reason she signed up for the Hex Night is partly to fulfil her duty to prevent the creation of another beast, and partly because a wish could be the miracle her family needs.
  • Skills: Knowledge of folktales and their various retellings, which could help magical girls with related concepts explore their abilities in more depth.
  • Brief Backstory: Fuyuko grew up in a small mountain village, the elder of two sisters, with a father who owned a small bookshop and a mother who worked as a teacher. Considering her parents, it was no wonder that she had a thirst for knowledge from early childhood. Myths and legends in particular intrigued her, and she'd sit entranced as her father told her all manner of stories. As she grew, so did her fascination with folklore, her childlike curiosity and imagination never diminishing.

    Of course, it turned out events weren't as easily resolved as they were in books. One night, something happened that the family would never have expected in such a quiet area; the store was broken into, and several rare books were stolen. Her father was never the same again after that. Struggling financially, his sense of security in tatters, he withdrew into himself, turning to unhealthy coping techniques such as excessive drinking. This sparked many arguments between her parents, and all Fuyuko could do was try to protect her sister from the fallout, taking her for long nature walks and keeping her distracted with the same stories that served as her refuge.

    In the early hours one morning, she lay in bed, unable to sleep for the unusually intense wave of hopelessness washing over her. She closed her eyes, trying to drift off, then opened them again to a sight that made her sit right up. A fairy? She had to be dreaming, yet the shock was all too real when the fairy pointed out something through the window, unveiling the world to her for what it was. Shadowy, monstrous beings gathered around the house like a pack of hungry wolves, seeking to drain away any positivity the family still had. When told by the mysterious visitor there was a way she could fend them off, Fuyuko accepted in desperation. With her newfound abilities as a magical girl, she succeeded in destroying most of the monsters and sending the rest fleeing.

    Since then, she made sure to do her utmost to purify as many manifestations of darkness as possible, but no matter what she did, it never felt like enough. The struggles within her family continued, worsening over time despite people's efforts to help. It was hearing about the Hex Night that brought her a glimmer of hope. She signed up for the chance at the prize, a wish. In her case, a wish that her father would recover.

    • Magical Girl Appearance:
    • Concept: Yuki-Onna (snow spirit)
    • Archetype: A foldable fan that she can use to whip up hailstorms and blasts of icy wind. The imagery on the fan is of a full moon over white-capped mountains, as it represents an Oguni folktale of a yuki-onna, a moon princess who descended to earth along with snow.
    • Abilities:
  • Frost Touch: By touching something or somebody, she can generate ice over a surface within a small radius. This can be used to partially freeze somebody in place, or to create weapons and armour of ice.
  • Winter Mist: She can turn into a cloud of wispy cold mist to evade attacks. While almost immediate at first, the more often she does this within a short length of time (like the typical duration of a battle), the longer the shifting takes. If she's hit mid-evaporation, she gets injured as normal and instantly reforms.
  • Vitality Absorb: When she activates this, glowing blue veins spread across her hand, which she rests on someone to slowly drain their strength and heal herself. This is interrupted as soon as contact is broken, so it's normally used to slightly weaken opponents rather than incapacitate them. It can also be reversed and used to heal allies at the cost of Fuyuko's own energy. Healing someone of a life-threatening injury would cause her to pass out.

@LuckyBlackCat: This is mostly good, but her Archetype needs to be more specific. Maybe a specific Yuki-onna or a location legendary for a yuki-onna, and the fan is the embodiment of that?

@VitaVitaAR Would a white wand with streamers be better, which is what a yuki-onna from a specific legend (Oshika village folktale) is portrayed with? Or do I keep the fan, and since the Japanese fan is associated with the court, should it represent this one story about a yuki-onna who's a moon princess trapped on earth, and feature moon imagery as well as snowflakes?
