Ok, I get the issues. As for his position within the college, it is more of an "outside the normal structure" kind of thing. If you don't want the college being fleshed out yet I could go with the second idea for after the cave collapse. Instead of what really happened his master died in the cave collapse and after Chrollo's escape he didn't return to the college. I could probably think of a reason he would be helping the rose knights.

Instead of that, I could merely lower the rank of his master to something of a "head of a department". That would lower them both down in importance, and avoid touching the main NPC's of the college. Also in regard to the "power-hungry and outright violent", I wouldn't consider Chrollo to be the first descriptor. He has no real need to climb the social or political ladder, and most times couldn't care about rank. And for the outright violence, he is leaning towards a lack of inhibition. He doesn't seek violence or instigate much of it, but you will probably not find him actually monologuing on the merits of pacifism. If in his personality it came off as either of those I can change it up. When I was thinking of his personality I took considerable inspiration from Pariston in HunterxHunter if that gives any good context. I can change the very end of the history if it was giving off that impression.

Ok time to tackle the big thing: Gravity magic. Ok, so I'm just gonna kinda say most of what's in my head about this and hope it makes decent sense. So when you spoke of more small-scale and single-target spells, that is 95% of gravity spells. They can range from changing the weights of objects to manipulating the momentum of a swing. The only traditional attack spell it has is condensing air with gravity and launching that at people. All that is the stuff that would be considered low to low-high tier. Of course, manipulating larger or living creatures take exponentially more mana and concentration.

Beyond that is the range of AOE gravity spells, aka the hard ones. Using them is balancing multiple very fine lines. Of course the larger the area the harder it becomes. (while already being extremely difficult) Another boundary to watch out for is as you said allies. The nature of Gravity is very impartial, and its magic is no different. Both the caster are affected in the area just as much as the intended targets. This makes it a very technical study of magic that has potentially incredible abilities, but a just as dangerous potential for a devastating crack back. The most powerful users of it (which Chrollo is currently nowhere near) can make multiple areas of effect, thus avoiding themselves and allies. The ability Chrollo has is to be unaffected by his own gravity magic (and maybe others idk) thus allowing him to avoid one of the major pitfalls of the dangerous field of magic. An AOE use of gravity magic of 5x5 feet would probably leave a normal person exhausted for a week after using it. An average mage could probably hold that for 10 min before exhausting. Chrollo can probably hold the 5x5 for around twenty min. One of the most powerful mages can probably manage about 10 of those separate areas for the same amount of time. Any large AOEs attempted by Chrollo would probably only last around 10 seconds depending on the size. Anything army-sized probably is out of reach of all but the top 2/3 mages in all the world.

As for his normal attacking magic he mostly uses fire and earth magics around intermediate levels. He could probably manage a high-level fire spell like a fire tornado or something. These are the spells he would have learned naturally studying at the college.

Thx for working with me on this! I know this character is pretty out there, so I appreciate this. Also, I'm sorry I'm filling up a whole OOC page with my explanations lol.

Uh, when I said violent and power hungry I was talking about his teacher.

It's a bit too late in the day for me or Anno to respond about any power-related things, though.

oh ya sure, I can edit his teacher. That shouldn't be difficult at all so I would be more than happy to soften him up a bit.

Okay, so the thing about gravity magic is... you're simultaneously nerfing it too much and making too much of a problem to implement? There's not a good reason for it to be so out of line with other magic to the point it's ridiculously exhausting for small AoEs, beyond "this is an obscure branch of magic so almost nobody has any skill with it" rather than something intrinsic to it. And being categorically unable to exclude targets from it means it's just a friendly fire incident that becomes unusable, because you're also restricting the people who you want to take advantage of it. Being able to exercise more control so it can do something (and operating on a scale of slightly more than spread arms so it's not trivial to get out of) would actually be better. An easier way to limit a powerful gravity effect is just to have it take longer to cast the spell so it's not one post -> nobody in this area can move, it's more several posts -> the enemy can't move (or is at least severely slowed).

As for direct magic, if you mean... a person sized tornado? That sort of thing is fine without big buildup. Anything that would take apart buildings is not (and probably would be rather exhausting from what you seem to be aiming for).

Oh, the fire tornado is just an idea for a somewhat powerful fire spell and completely something I am up for changing around. It was just a silly idea with no real purpose. I was just thinking of base elemental spells that could be used.

Ok so if I'm understanding you correctly, basically I can buff the gravity magic and just give AOE's long casting times. I'm cool with that, but then I would need to think of something else for the tattoos. They could provide a general base mild resistance to magic. (Or something else I would have to think of) So, I can nominate allies to be unaffected and affect larger areas, but it takes longer to cast where I would be relatively defenseless while focusing on the spell. If I got something wrong there let me know pls. Thx.

If you want to tie the tattoos to his choice of magic, you could make them a catalyst--basically, he'd have the equivalent of a magical staff tattooed onto his person. Possibly one that's only good for making a specific type of magic rasier/less intensive to cast, but it would be an idea.

That was kinda my original idea, that the tattoos assist him in using his gravity magic. So instead of resistance to it, it takes less mana and concentration to cast those spells.

I think if you make all these changes you're probably good to go.

Cool thanks, I'll edit the cs and post it here one more time to make sure I got everything and if it is all good I'll put it in the cs section.

@FlappyTheSpybot@HereComesTheSnow@Krayzikk@PaulHaynek We'll be moving along to a new arc in a day or two, so if there's anything you want to wrap up quickly...?

Would it be possible to maybe have until Sunday? Snow and I have something we'd like to wrap up. I just finished midterms, and he works most days but by Sunday I think we could write it out ourselves and wrap it in a post.

I kinda had something in mind, but nothing super important. Life's had me stretched a bit thin lately, so I'll pass on doing side stuff for now.

@pandapolio: I still think you're not quite there with explaining his powers. I want to get a good idea of what he can do in the middle of a fight.

Additionally, his tattoos let him bypass a catalyst entirely like we discussed, so he doesn't need a focus.

Or, rather, a focus is unnecessary anyway but a really, really good idea if you want to throw out high-powered magic because it makes it easier to control and more efficient. But that's just pedantry. xD

Okay, you didn't pad out the other forms of magic? An example or two there?

Also... I really don't get why you want gravity magic to be used as an overly complicated and impractical way of like, doing a fireball. Or attacking someone with air?

Where a normal mage typically requires something like a staff or wand to harness mana into their desired form, Chrollo is able to do it without these things

Didn't I just say it makes it quicker and easier, not that it's required? The sentiment is right but it's not like it's... well, a necessity. xD

Ok, I hope I have it down this time. I guess there was some miscommunication about the tattoos lol. I tried to add a bit more about the other elemental spells, but I don't know if it is enough yet. The difficult part is since these are the more classical "Dnd" spells that I have known about most of my life, I am kinda struggling with how to explain them. It is kinda like explaining how to think in English to a non-native speaker.(if that analogy makes any sense) It is just I have such a comfortable knowledge of "fire magic" I am unsure what I need to explain. It would help if you could give me the information you need, instead of me just repeatedly guessing. Thank you.

Also for those uses of gravity magic, you pointed out, those are just random uses I was thinking of. 90% will hopefully be the more indirect weight and momentum-shifting that allows for outside-the-box thinking. I just thought it would be helpful to have some basic stuff to "fill in the blanks".
