The 23rd century would mark the end of the world as we knew it, through whatever cosmic or divine forces, a small red dwarf was discovered to be on a collision course with the Solar System. Humanity had a few centuries to evacuate the system before the earth would be rendered unhabitable and humanity all lost.
Through their combined efforts, many scientists across the globe had devised a radical, yet hopeful solution to ensure mankind’s continued survival. A Jump Gate, an experimental superstructure that could theoretically propel a vessel dozens of light-years in a matter of weeks, however, for it to work as intended, the Jump Gate would require a second one for an accurate jump, the time needed to built and deploy a second one being impossible.

After many years of construction work, the Jump Gate was fully functional, alongside a great fleet of cyrosleep vessels made to ferry as much earth life as possible off to the beyond.

One by one, each vessel was sent out via Jump Gate to their planned destination, a possible Earth-like world a hundred light-years from their location. For safe precautions, each sleeper ship’s A.I Has been tasked with locating a world suitable for human habitation so as not wonder aimlessly in the void.

Many centuries have long since passed since that day, there was one fatal flaw in the program, the AI controlling the sleeper fleet had deemed the planned destination unsuitable for human life and continued to search the stars. Nearly a dozen, maybe a hundred times they searched across the galaxy, only to be met with failure. The fleet kept on their journey until they had far left the bounds of the milky way.

Long after the earth has been rendered a hollowed husk, the sleeper fleet finally discovers suitable worlds, far from the milky way.

The fleet finally arriving to its new destination, an isolated star cluster that orbited the milky way, a literal island in a sea of nothingness. The star cluster held a wide array of habitable worlds, a small handful of them earth-like. The sleeper felt splits apart as the AIs aboard direct their respective vessels towards the nearest unclaimed world.

Once they arrived, the passengers had finally been awoken from their long sleep, unfortunately only to discover a fraction of the total population had long since died in cyrosleep, a day of both mourning and celebration for the survivors.

And as far as the sleeper crews were aware of, they were the last remnant of humanity. Simultaneously dozens of worlds had been settled by the sleeper ships, completely unaware of one anothers survival.

However, in their ignorance, unintentionally established a vast Jump Gate network that would prove to be beneficial in the end.

As the centuries pass since their arrival, humanity makes two important discoveries, that many more of their kind survived, and that indeed, we are not alone.

Its been YEARS since I last made an NRP, hopefully I'm not too rusty at this. Anyway, welcome to Eden! A small-scale space NRP set in a small star cluster orbiting the milky way, over several hundred years after humanity arrived to the Eden Cluster.

Moderately interested, what sort of timeframe to start are we looking at? I was thinking of a corporatocracy of some sort or living out some epic national power fantasy

@Andreyich Well a little over three hundred years have passed since the sleeper fleet arrived. So a corporatocracy would be possible. Also check the backstory bit, I revised it.

Potential interest if life doesn't get in the way, but I do have a question about the dwarf star. Is there a story behind that? Like it was possibly sent on a collision course by some mysterious force? Or was it just pure happenstance? And as for technology, I assume there's some limit to it?

EDIT: Xenos in this are proper aliens right? Not just mutated remnants of the human sleeper fleet that were isolated for God knows how long before reestablishing contact?

Pirates of the Outer Worlds

Leadership: Rasvan Saroyan
Military/Civilian Assets:

Saroyan and his franchisees are by no means the only pirate enterprises in the Outer Cluster, but they are certainly of the most powerful. The Outer World Pirates operate in remote and sparsely-populated systems well away from the sphere of influence of the established nations. While the Pirates do not have de jure control over any planets, they operate or inhabit dozens of outposts on barren rocks and half-terraformed dustworlds disguised as legitimate frontier settlements. From their outpost settlements in the sparsely-populated Outer World systems, the Pirates operate black markets peddling every conceivable vice.

Business is easy in the lawless Outer Worlds, but the populations and fortunes to be had are quite low. The real money comes from trafficking drugs, arms, and women into "civilized" space. And in order to do business on the planets of the established nations, the Outer World Pirates have acquired fleets of starships in order to get illicit goods from Point A to B. Massive ore freighters have long been the favored mules of pirates, who discovered that vast holds laden with dense metal ore were perfect for concealing small starships buried inside the ore which were in turn laden with a smaller quantity of much more profitable illicit cargo. Recent captures of pirate-operated mule freighters has resulted in a crackdown and much more stringent checks.

While unarmed smuggling vessels comprise the majority of the pirate fleet, the Outer World Pirates operate a number of armed vessels for detaining and hijacking other ships in deep space. Of these, there are many corvette-class vessels: fast, nimble craft used for ambushing merchant vessels and destroying their escorts. But the Outer World Pirates also possess heavier starships: hijacked destroyers and dreadnoughts that serve to defend their enclaves from unaffiliated pirates, or glass settlements that failed to pay their protection tribute.

History:

As long as there are ships, there will be piracy. For thousands of years, pirates have menaced seagoers on the watery seas of ancient Earth. And in the vast emptiness of space, it is no different.

As soon as the survivors of Earth began expanding beyond their destination worlds and colonized the surrounding planets and systems, piracy resumed amid the stars. Merchant freighters ferrying goods and wealth between planets were targeted by pirates in poorly-patrolled reaches of space. The established nations constructed starships - mainly corvettes and frigates - to prevent unchecked piracy. These patrol vessels were effective in reducing piracy, but they were expensive indeed. Established nations could only increase taxation enough to cover the costs of patrolling important trade routes and guarding the Jump Gates. Piracy was therefore, never stamped out, but rather exiled to the more remote corners of occupied space.

Far removed from the reach of pirate-hunters, pirates built up strongholds on remote worlds. Resupply stations in asteroid fields, subterranean bunkers carved out of craters on lifeless rocks, modular settlements within glacial crevasses of iceball planets: these overlooked, inhospitable locales became favored pirate ports throughout the Outer Worlds. From their remote bases of operation, pirate warlords built up strength and wealth, made forays into the civilized systems, and wrought havoc until their presence could no longer be tolerated and the aggravated authorities were sent out to obliterate the offending pirate stronghold. For centuries, piracy occurred in a cyclical basis: quiet lulls with diminished pirate activity after a brutal crackdown, followed a gradual increase in hijackings and attacks until the next crackdown occurred.

The past twenty years have been something of an anomaly - a deviation from the usual cycles. For nearly twenty years, a lull in piracy coming from the outer systems has prevailed and pirate forays into the populated systems has come to a near-stop. This lull in space piracy does not seem to be caused by an increase in the efficacy or frequency of pirate patrols. Rather, it is suspected that many of the pirate outfits in the outer worlds have been consolidated into franchises operated by Rasvan Saroyan - a soft-spoken but ruthless warlord of Armenian stock. Collecting modest tribute from his franchisees, Saroyan allows his pirate vassals to operate more-or-less however they please, so long as they do not attract unwanted attention. For the better part of a generation, the pirates of the Outer Worlds appear to have shifted their focus on building wealth through smuggling rather than outright banditry. Though Saroyan's pirates are now more reserved with their violence, his freebooters are just as cruel and remorseless as ever: using slave labor to operate planet-spanning opium farming projects and kidnapping girls to sell as brides. The pirates have not abandoned their brutality, but rather seem to be holding it in reserve. But for what purpose, nobody but Saroyan knows.

@ZAVAZggg Regarding the dwarf star, yeah it just was happanstance, an unfortunate 180 in life.

As for technology, yes there are some limits. For example of course, FTL-capable ships haven't been developed, Jump Gates being the primary means of traveling between star systems. Nothing else comes to mind for now, but I'll let you guys know when something isn't kosher to the setting.

Also to note to explain why Jump Gates are a thing now despite alien civilizations being established, they were all too primitive to leave beyond their homeworlds or systmes before the humans arrived.

Edit: And yes, proper aliens :D

I see. Well I assume directed energy weapons exist, unless it's all still kinetic. Even then if there's any space combat at all it'd still be done from either side of a system so it still works. Hell probably even better than usual given the lack of gravity. As for the lack of FTL, that actually makes the possibility of discovering it, either as a joint effort or singular fluke, far more interesting. Who knows what could be lurking in hyperspace after all.

Anyway, another question I have is that of shielding. Are we talking energy or relying on pure hull integrity?

EDIT: Asking just so I know what to avoid when making a nation from the get go.

@ZAVAZggg Shields and Energy Weapons are a-ok with me :) And of course there's the standard kinetic weapons thrown in the mix as well. Adds on to the grittyness of the setting.

@Sigma
Just a question; how small scale is this NRP, to begin with? Are we talking just 1 fleet and several million humans, or are we talking more like a planet with 7bn population each?

If you're asking i prefer to keep things smaller scale.

@CleanBreeze By small-scale I mean the scale of the setting. Normally an NRP set in a galaxy always has that problem of the setting itself being far too large when player nations would be quite small compared to the galaxy as a whole. The Eden Cluster however is like a micro galaxy, made up of several dozen star systems, giving more meaning to worlds and systems when nations squabble and fight over them, resources being less infinite and more precious and such.

What about things like psionics? Is that a possibility or a no go in this?

EDIT: Also, power sources. Are xenos, being less advanced when humans arrived, capable of using energy, dark energy, dark matter, etc, to power their craft now? Or are they still limited to chemical engine's that run off of liquid fuel mixes and such?

@ZAVAZggg Psionics are also a thing if a bit "limited". Think Telekinesis, limited mind-reading and such.

Edit: By the present time, the Xenos have been pretty much "uplifted" in a sense by humanity's arrival. Once communication was set up, the xenos that could, had reverse-engineered human tech to give themselves a technological boost. They're capable of using the above.

Alright. Well time to start looking into power cores. Or making non haxxy unobtanium fuel sources.

EDIT: I have this whole idea involving Dark Matter storing crystals and using it in a field form for travel, but it strays into FTL territory quite heavily.

@Sigma So I'm thinking for my dudes they came upon a system in which initially each world was decent for human life having been Terraformed extensively by a previous species present. But unable to communicate the two got to war with my settlers eventually winning but as a final retribution the native xenos scoured their worlds with doomsday devices. The remaining worlds remained survivable but still terrible places to be leading to the people having to go into considerable cybernetics and genetic engineering to adapt to their new conditions, and thus the demographics would be 100% "transhuman" for it. Sound cool?
