For once in her life, Mags used the chat function to notify her team of her opinion on the matter at hand.

[Mags]: Probably hypnotized with the prospect of snake cloaca.

"What, weird like out of character? Seems pretty normal to me. I'd do some wild shit for Snake p-" She paused. "...riendship. Plus earlier. We're kinda 0 to 1 on judging people's characters."

Though, Mags felt a little guilty. After all, she was wearing the robes of a snake. That was pretty messed up. It was like wearing the dead skin of one's ancestors. Though, Mags had no way to confirm this. After all, she'd never seen someone wear the dried husk of Donkey Kong.

Mags didn't really feel much in the room. The snakes didn't exactly seem evil to her. Rather, she respected them if anything else. Sentient people that chose to live in this kind of shithole? That was some set of ancestral ties. Plus, there was that dude with the abacus. You could always trust someone with an abacus. Everyone dangerous used a Texas Instruments, after all.

Now this is something new, there is a whole colony of snake people? But what does she meant by pushing into the goat people's territory? Is this some kind of a quest? Klein eyebrows' raised before filling with exhaustion. If Lugh is here, it wouldn't be very nice to directly ask for loots for doing the quest. But, if that is the case, Klein really doesn't wanna do it for free. Like the mud warriors already pointed out how weak the team is. So can we PLEASE GET BACK TO GRINDING? Klein groaned to himself, feeling frustrated for the past 2 or 3 running around doing nothing. But still, Klein can't steel himself to ask the question to the snake lady. Not in front of the kid.

Klein: Like should we ask for loots? Like I dont really wanna waste my time... venturing into the cavern and probably died for no reason.

Klein paused, before decided to remind the team of their weak nature.

Klein: We almost got manhandled by a single guy. Who knew if there is something like a frogman?

"We would love too, madam..." Klein respond before stopping himself to said any further. He found the snake lady to be lovely, especially with her titties almost fall off the kimono like that. He does found her to be a trustworthy folk, not that there are any reason for her to lie to the team. And again, she has a big personality. Still, that is as far as he gonna go. Big personality is a loveable trait. Still not as worth as his grind though.

“More details?”

Sarasa tilted her head to the side slightly, as if there didn’t need to be more detail than what she had just shared. It was a simple matter of territory within this particular cavern in the Blasphemed Tunnels, after all, and since when did Immortals question anyone when it came to a simple request to kill things? Ames’s follow-up question clarified things though, and the frown that the buxom lady had on her face was the perfect combination of empathetic but helpless.

“Ah, we don’t receive much news of the surface from down below,” she said, shaking her head. “It’s certainly terrible news though, this matter with abducted children. And as for the details you’ve wished us to elaborate upon, Master One-Armed, I must confess that there isn’t all too much to it. Surely you have seen the depraved acts of the gyunin on your way here? We’ve done what we could to hold our own, but unfortunately, their numbers exceed ours, and so does their lust for brutality. Even the undead fake their deaths when those savages are in the proximity.”

She let out a dry chuckle.

“It’s doubtlessly ironic, that my den has fled the surface to avoid the warlike oni, only to find below their inbred brethren. Alas, such a plague of monstrosities ought to be uprooted entirely, and,” her eyes flickered towards the musclebound Klein, who was already itching for some real action, “I’m sure your party is wholly capable of that.”

Raime’s quick scan of the room didn’t manage to uncover any further details about the presence of children, other than what looked to be the remnants of a footprint near the entrance where he was at. It wasn’t the party’s and couldn’t have belonged to Lugh or the snake-people either, who were either barefoot, had no feet, or wore sandals. A quick comparison would indicate that the footprint must have belonged to an adult male…but what did it mean?
@Shovel@Searat@Psyker Landshark@OwO@Yankee

As her vision blackened, then sharpened to supernatural sensitivity, Ari found her suspicions proven correct. With the glimpses of the cart that she could catch while swivelling her head from right to left, she could easily see the outlines of several blue-tinted forms within the space beneath the floor. They had to be small, smaller than a normal adult, in order to fit into such spaces, but why they didn’t move at all was something that she couldn’t answer immediately. Within fifty meters of her as well, there was only the thick yellow brilliance of flora, while right before her, glowing the crimson of the monsters, was the form of Man-Joji.

No real revelations were had, certainly, but it confirmed her suspicions and elucidate her prior observations. All the answers were essentially in her hands now. The only question was what she could do with them.

That wasn’t right.

Before any plans could be made, Ari saw it within the aurascape offered by Xu Fu. The hand of the shapeshifter reaching up and rising slowly towards her face. The precursor to an attack? Or a test to determine whether she had lied or not about her Nuclei’s power? Another crossroads, another choice.

And her mana continued to burn away.

Her hand moved quickly, the scythe's blade moving through the reaching auras and straight towards the man's neck, stopping just a hair from actually puncturing through it.

"You know, cats are well known for their curiosity." There was only one way through now. She had no idea what he was, or what he was capable of. Not to mention she wasn't sure if she was going to respawn all the way back at the first stone or if she was stuck here if she died suddenly. "So, please indulge me in this. Who are you exactly? No merchant would move carpets unfit for even cats to nap on, especially not where we're going."

[Raime]: Noticed a human footprint near us. Can't be ours nor Lew's. Might be related to carriage tracks we followed earlier. More illusory talismans likely in play.

"Apologies, it was not my intention to confuse." Raime said with a practiced smile. The very same kind of smile to fool any out-of-town folk for a sincere one. He'd have to play along with the lamias...for now. While they held the advantage of having the children hidden away somewhere, they were in no position to attack. Though the idea of cooperating with some of the Grove's unholy denizens instead of stopping whatever nefarious plan just reeked of treachery. He can already imagine the reptoid in the black kimono say something along the lines of 'You puppets have outlived your usefulness.' and attacking the party when they were at their weakest after killing the goat men. But he had little choice on the matter. "Our party can certainly try, but I do believe we have yet to discuss the matter of incentive. Specifically for the risk and effort needed for the task." If they were going to help these evil serpentine reptoid bastards in gaining more land, they'd damn well better be compensated for it.

Oni? These lamia hated oni? That was news to her. The ones she met on the surface weren't that bad. Sure, they had a little tub going on and they smoked some horrible things, but they were pretty reasonable people all things considered. Though, like the snake woman implied, there could have been some other bad groups. Maybe it was just the ones underground that had the evil imbred into them. Maybe it was a misunderstanding from hundreds of years ago. Or it could have been something else.

It could have been good old fashioned racism.

Actually, was it racism?

Mags hated shrimp. If there was some hyper evolved, intelligent shrimp people, she'd probably hate them too.

That was food for her bizarre, deranged thoughts.

She turned to Ames again.

"What do you think about doing this, oh mighty Zoltar?"

Mags was mostly on team booba already. She also lacked a moral compass when it came to 1s and 0s, so she'd swing either way.

Amulak al Acturus (Stanislaw)
HP:653/1030 MP:1426/1490 SP:336/336

Annnnnd there it was. Lew befriended snake anthro NPCs. Of course. Didn't explain why he was being so weird about it, but Stanislaw assumed the fucker was just larping really hard. Or, well, since they were in-game, just RPing.

Raime's chat provided an alternate explanation. Sure, Lew/Lugh could be brainwashed. It was certainly a possibility. But in his own mind, it was equally as likely the dramatic little clown was just putting on a show. Ugh.

The whole matter with the adult tracks didn't help, either. Unbeknowst to Amulak, his thoughts mirrored Klein's. What the fuck were they still doing here? They had xp and loot to grind for, damn it.

Amulak: At this point, I don't give a fuck what we do as long as we get some kind of xp or loot to make our time out here worth it. Unlike Lew, I'm not here just for the snake tits.

"Incentive is sounding good, yes." Juxtaposed with the fact that he was entirely capable of using perfect English in text, it was looking more and more likely that Amulak's heavy dialect and diction was put upon purely for shits and giggles.

"We risk own behinds for your benefit, is only fair we receive some kind of commensurate reward, yes? No one in world ever do something for free, unless it for family."

"Family is stronger!!!" Klein yelled before laughing to the reference he made. Don Torito would be proud of him. Maybe Amulak would have hate the Fast and Furious 15 and their adventure in the Death Star, but he was begging for it with that line.

But other than that, Klein doesn't do much outside of standing menacingly behind the group. He isn't the most talkative, nor the most suave of the group. Beside, he trust the group to name a right price for their service. Although, he won't save the kid for free though. They are NPCs. If the team isn't the one save the kids, surely someone else would've done it either way. No reason to waste valuable time for no reward.

[Klein]: Where kids? We have to save kids?

If he doesn't acknowledge the quest, the quest will never exist. Easy solution for something none of their business.

The longer they stayed in the room, the more Ames started to feel that they shouldn't be here. She was getting chills all up and down her back, and the sheer wrongness she felt was threatening to make her physically ill. It was the kind of feeling one got watching a horror movie and seeing a character run head first into the killer's lair. The character was oblivious, but the viewer was stuck knowing how bad the situation was and not being able to do anything about it. It felt creepy and bad. And it was getting worse.

While normally she could appreciate the others' attempts at being suave or weaseling some payment out of these obviously destitute snake people, right now it was giving her a headache. She opened her mouth to say something along the lines of, are you guys serious right now? Do ANY of you feel this?? but she was interrupted by a well time reference from Klein. Her shoulders drooped and she opened the party chat.

"Oh I'll tell you how I feel," Ames said, responding to Mags while she cut a glance towards Sarasa. She voiced her feelings in the private party chat, and once she had Amulak and Raime on her side Ames felt that was good enough to start the process of getting the fuck out.

Sorry, Lew, the redhead thought to herself, maybe someday we'll come back for you.

"We can't help you, sorry. We have other missions to do, and people to find." Just saying that lifted some of the heaviness Ames felt - but not nearly enough to feel comfortable sticking around with these lamia. "You know how to find us though, Lugh."

Despite the confident words, Ames was so eager to leave that he was already backing out of the door they'd come through, ready to sprint away at a moment's notice.

Perhaps there was some way to negotiate with these snake-people, or perhaps there was some way to finesse themselves into digging out more answers regarding the children. But before Sarasa could respond to either Raime or Amulak’s concerns and questions, Ames asserted his own position on the matter and quickly left the room, promptly ending any chance of coming to a deal.

“Well,” Sarasa breathed, her expression one carefully crafted to look disappointed and resigned. “I suppose we’ll just have to rely on Lugh then.”

The swordsman’s own answer was indistinct; by then, everyone else had left to follow after Ames, leaving behind the strange atmosphere of the estate.

Despite Ames’s reluctance to have anything at all to do with those snakes, however, the rest of the party’s demands still had to be felt. Raime was the most hesitant in switching gears, sharing concerns with Ames regarding the fate of the abducted children, but the two of them were out-voted by the more immediate gamer concerns that their other party members had. Klein, especially, looked ready to flat-out explode into a ball of musclebound violence at this point. Being the lowest member of the party and also possessing a competitive streak to match Amulak’s made the Mountain Man the most vocal proponent to essentially genociding the goat-headed men after all. Magpie and Amulak were both on board as well, eager for some action that wasn’t just slogging through these miserable, depressing caves. Cacophony Concord’s realism may have given them supernaturally capable bodies and literal magic powers, but even that wasn’t enough to stave off the boredom and tedium of just…walking down spooky caves.

So, as awkward as it was, the party soon found themselves encroaching upon the northern ruins, where the gyunin lived. Passing by the outer perimeter of skull-hoisting stakes, it became obvious why the gyunin made their territory known in such a barbaric fashion: there were no patrols at all. Of the twenty or so gyunin that could be observed from a distance, their society definitely appeared to be more of a disorganized orgy of violence and machoism rather than anything that could actually be considered a civilization. A great bonfire served as the center of their community, as a tree roasted away. Atop the smoking trunk, the largest gyunin of them all, a freakishly lanky specimen with white fur and curled horns, cannibalized the remains of another gyunin as it stomped its hooves about, braying out indecipherable commands.

Four other gyunin worked on the corpse of a massive bear, similar to the one that Ames and Magpie had seen being torn apart by the oni. Were these big bears seriously just fodder? It was sorta hard to imagine, but considering how the only bears they’ve seen were dead ones, it may really have been the case. Outside of those four gyunin-butchers, there were a few more sitting amongst the bones of distinctly humanoid beings, roasting meat or scraping fat off of hides. They chattered as well, the colossal rage apparently kept in check by having actual work to do. For the majority of the other goatheaded beefcakes, however, they seemed content to just mill about with no purpose, occasionally butting heads with such force that it sounded like a cymbal crash.

Yes, it seemed like savagery was the only deterrent the gyunin had to others encroaching upon them, and though it may be effective for the rational mortal beings of Gala…well, Immortals lived immortal lives of thrill-seeking and power-gaining. With almost such ease that it was baffling, the entire party managed to make their way behind a pile of dead, collapsed trees, the braying and bleating of their prey just on the other side.

If they engaged, it was definitely gonna be the sort of fight that they wouldn’t be able to run away from.

But surely, they wouldn’t get cold feet now?
@Shovel@Searat@Psyker Landshark@OwO@Yankee

A dark chuckle rumbled out from Man-Joji’s throat, the man unflustered even with the Maneater Sickle pressed against his flesh. “Ari, Ari, Ari,” he intoned, a mirthless smile slicing his expression into two. “What did I say when this job first began? I won’t ask about how you do your business, and you won’t ask about how I do mine. Such a simple order. All you had to do was not think about it.”

A forked tongue flicked out.

“Ah, and I had hoped we could’ve had a lasting relationship.”

The merchant’s right eye glowed, intensifying into a brilliant beam. Ari pushed her sickle in, but with only the strength of one and a half men, she heard the crackling of scales instead. Not enough to pierce the iridescent scales that began coating Man-Joji’s skin, and not enough to force his eyes away from her.

Instinct alone, a twitch of her head, allowed Ari to dodge the beam of heat that singed her hair and seared a hole through the canvas of the carriage, before she bounded back off the carriage, her feet finding the gnarled roots of the claustrophobic grove. The mule, terrified by this turn of events, neighed out in distress, but was silenced with a swift strike of the thickly muscled appendage that sprouted out from where Man-Joji’s left arm had once been. His right ripped out from its sleeve as well, a mass of snake heads writhing out, while the merchant’s face elongated into a more reptilian form.

“It is a pity, to earn the ire of an immortal being,” Man-Joji said, towering over Ari. “But alas, you were the one to force my hand, child.”

Time dilated, every sense sharpened within the deep groves that he had lead her to, and with razor certainty, Ari knew.

Only one of them was coming out alive tonight.

Currently, Ames was fuming.

She was sitting on the ground with her back pressed against the rotting wood of their cover, her arms crossed over her chest and a distinct, girlish pout on her bishounen avatar's boyish face. The initial relief of leaving the ruin housing the lamia and seeing her party members leave along with her was intense. Like a window being opened and a breeze pushing away stale air, that horrible feeling she'd had while in the room with the snake people lessened.

She'd expected after that the group would leave the area. Go into the next cavern while taking care of some of the undead Raime had mentioned on their way out. Or maybe she thought they would try and leave the cave all together, and get their PvP training done or something.

But, no. Instead they were still in the ruins of some underground civilization, doing the exact thing Sarasa had asked them to do. FOR FREE, Ames noted, something the guys had been arguing against while talking with the snake woman.

What. The. Fuck.

So now, the party's warrior-animist was sitting there unhelpfully quiet while the others came up with a game plan. She would have left to go check out the last cavern herself if she didn't think she would die pretty quickly on her own in this awful place. Hell, she might still try anyway. The only thing presently holding her back was the thought of her friends fighting that horde of goat men and getting massacred. The least she could do was try and help them out. Besides, she would be a hypocrite if she separated from the party now, given how annoyed she'd been when Lugh and Ari had gone off on their own.

"This is so stupid..." Ames sighed under her breath. If nothing else she could probably work out her frustration by fighting, but given their track record she didn't think it would go that smoothly. Not to mention there were a ton of goat monsters, and they all looked pretty strong.

No new quest.
No relevant info about the missing NPCs.
No Lugh to bring back to the priestess in Nyu Taro.

To be honest? Things were pretty sucky at the moment being...but not a sucky as being overwhelmed and killed by the goat men. Strangely enough, they still opted to fight despite their refusal of Sarasa's request that they do it with the assistance of Lugh. The scout guessed that majority of the group couldn't hold their murderboners in their metaphorical pants anymore. Regardless, they were well past the point of regrets and now had to deal with the present situation.

The one-armed scout peeked through the branches of the dead trees they were using as cover every now and then to keep an eye on the movements of the thirty or so cannibalistic goat men and kept his voice a hushed tone as he gave his two cents on the matter. "From my earlier observations, these goat men mainly rely on brutish physical prowess. Being both stupid strong and tough. But we aren't entirely sure that they are devoid of any ranged capabilities. So I suggest that we do a blitzkrieg tactic. Hitting hard and fast while keeping mobile. But I'm open to suggestion as we only have one ranged DPS as of the moment." He punctuated with a wiggle of his arm nub. He really wished that he was able to use his bow or crossbow effectively right now as the thought of getting struck by one of these monsters' calloused iron-hard fists sent chills down his spine.

He'd gotten somewhat used to the realistic pain he was too prideful to lower, but the experience is never a good one.

She wasn't sure if she was even going to win any fights at all from what she had experienced so far in the game, but at least this time she wasn't dragging someone down with her.

"Nyahaha~! That's your own fault!" Remember the motion, focus not on drawing the weapon, but on the enemy. "Curiosity killed the cat, as they say! That's why we have infinite lives!"

Even as she leaped backwards into the brush, her hands grabbed a handful of knives, throwing them towards the snake, now literally, instead of just figuratively.

Not that he was opposed to more xp, but what was the point of coming here anyways with even less prospect of a reward? Who made this call?

Oh, well. Fuck it. Experience points were experience points.

"We focus fire one at time, or we burn them all down at once? Not sure what AoE rest of you have now." Amulak whispered in response to Raime and the rest of the group. "Can finally use necromancer shit now that we have corpses around, can probably draw some aggro off of us, yes?"

Was it fortunate that their conversation, whispered and frustrated, was unheard by the monstrosities that lurked just on the other side of the toppled tree trunks? Or was such leniency by the gods of the dice simply granted because it didn’t matter? Against the barbaric horde, no longer willing to hold back their own desires for slaughter and having given up on trying to puzzle out why they were here when none of them wanted to be here to begin with, the party plucked up their courage and charged!

Vaulting over the largest tree with superhuman speed and grace, the four-man vanguard all experienced the sensation of time slowing around them as their bodies sailed through the air. It gave them all precious seconds to determine their singular target, and like that, they struck! Magpie, exemplifying the dirty fighting and brute force of her Brawler class, felt the roar of her soul echo into her fist as she delivered an overhead smash that would’ve made the King of Combat proud. The unfortunate target of her violence couldn’t even let out a bray of agony before his face flew towards the ground, the muscular body of the gyunin doing a 180 before bouncing back up from the force.

He did not make it back down in one piece.

Though one-armed and with minimal strength, the similar anatomies of humans and gyunin allowed Raime to pick his targets cleanly, his own sword slicing into tendons and arteries. Murky blood gushed out, but such was his speed in that transient moment that his blade remained untainted by demonic viscera. And from behind, Ames rose up, the flame-haired animist’s hooked sword burning with a powerful radiance to chase away the gloom of the forgotten ruins. Thrusting forth, he drove his sword deep into the monster’s chest, before the additional force of his spiritual energies surged into the gyunin and tore the beast apart from the seams that Raime had sliced open.

The blast of shredded parts splattering against the ground was matched only by the sound of meat against meat, Klein and another gyunin engaging in the manly art of chest upon chest bumping. And still behind the fallen trees, Amulak spoke the cursed word of power granted to him by the miasmic nightmare-tree, splaying out both hands as blasphemous lightning shot out. Arcing across mossy green and crumbled stone, the bolts struck two desiccated corpses, granting unto them the essence of life once more. While the gyunin were all drawn by the brutish violence that the vanguard had displaced, four of them already closing in with braying battle cries, the dead rose amongst them, a green lightning sparking within their eye sockets.

And within Amulak’s mind, new nuggets of information about his undead thralls and the monsters they once were emerged.

Now, how could he leverage this?
@Shovel@Searat@Psyker Landshark@OwO@Yankee

“Infinite lives but limited time,” Man-Joji sneered in retaliation. “You’ll tire of your tenure in the Upper Realms by the time I’m through with you!”

Ari, swift as the cat that she borrowed her motif from, slipped into the brush as blades flew out of her hands, scattering against the serpent man’s thickened left arm as he swatted them away like a cloud of annoying flies. Drawing his writhing right arm back, he thrust out, and the multitude of snakes within fanned out as well, a cone-shaped burst of serpentine fury to decimate the foliage Ari had tumbled into.

It was a battle of the ages.

It was a battle unseen by all but those involved.

And as the corpses of dozens dissolved into light, as battle scars reverted to unmarred flesh, as the saltwaters of a fallen friend was swallowed up by the desecrated earth, as the fires of a tribe died out and the silence settled in once more, all sign of that battle disappeared.

But not in the memories of those who survived it. From combat, experience. From experience, strength. And from strength, more possibilities. The necromancer, his potential still unactualized, felt his arcane might blossom further. The one-armed scout, stubborn in his desire to mold this world into a true second life, began to forget the phantom pain that contained to ache. The mountain man, stalwart despite his internal reservations, finally pushed past his dependency upon the demon of flames residing beneath his skin. And for the flame-haired animist, perpetually repulsed by their surroundings, by the situation, by all that they’ve gone through and all that they had to put up with.

And yet, he still had not yet hit the limits of his tolerance.

The carving of what remained of the massive bear’s rotted corpse was miserable work, but storage was as simple as jamming raw meat and bone and organs into their inventory pouches. The traveling back was pleasant, if only for the fresh air and the brightness of day. The haggling with the butcher was embarrassing, but they got a good deal with the bones. The shrine maiden was confused and remained concerned, but understood at least that Lugh was still alive and thanked them for their troubles. The day continued to fade, the stars revealing themselves as umbra extended over the city-state that seemed so jovial, no matter the horrors lying a mere hours walk away. Worries for another time, worries removed from everyday life. Now was simply the time to wash away the grime and fulfill a final condition before the night’s gaming session could be concluded.

Even at night, or perhaps, because of the night, carriages to the Blooming Springs continued to be active, offering bumpy but speedy rides to the lantern-lit resorts. Smoke from chimneys rose up alongside the vapour of the heated waters, workers adding fire-heated rocks to the upper portions of the springs in order to keep the large outdoor baths to a comfortably scalding temperature. Both Immortals and Riens paid the affordable price of admission, changing out into more easily removable clothing as they entered the mixed baths. There was enough fog here, enough lantern and fire light, that masked the nudity of people as they approached, and by the time they settled in, the waters of the spring were opaque enough to hide what laid beneath the surface.

Of course, for the party of four, having lost their only in-game female, this was really just a boys’ night out. Whether they went fully nude or came in with thin robes on to protect their chastity, the four finally settled into the waters of the Blooming Springs and enjoyed the mundane pleasures of a fully realized virtual game. None had a bath this large in real life, after all, and none could gaze at stars so bright either. Lotus blossoms added an earth aroma to the place, while a tray of warmed sake floated before them, swaying gently with every ripple created by the movements of others. The dark, damp stones jutting out from the pools felt amazingly cool as they pressed their backs against it, and though their Immortal bodies were not afflicted by any of the bothersome muscle pain that reality would’ve granted them, the quartet could nevertheless feel the tension in their body seep away.

This was nice. Beyond the promise of legendary powers, beyond the continent-shaping event that was just around the corner, it was nice, living in a world so different from the dreary humdrum of modern civilization.

And then, another ripple.

The mists congealed. The light gathered. A searing pain seeped into Ames’s right hand, like a brand sizzling against his very bone. And from the concentration of elements, a maiden was formed. Scarlet eyes and fair skin, body encased in white robes with crimson markings, a dark breastplate that fanned backwards into wing-like embellishments. Light brown hair spilled out of the steel-visored hood, while pointed ears poked out from beneath. In the Blossoming Springs, the young girl kneeled with her head bowed down, her countenance noble and unaffected by the environment. One gloved hand rested upon her knee, the other planted firmly into the ground. She lifted her gaze to meet Ames’s.

“Britomart, Maiden-of-the-Castle, at your service, my liege.”

Then she blinked, realized where exactly she was, and flushed as pink as a pomegranate.

The one armed scout let out a relieved sigh. After so much in-game suffering, they finally managed to catch a break. Heck, they even technically finished their first mission. Yeah, it was something akin to an unmarked quest and yeah, the shrine maiden was still worried and even got confused when they explained to her why Lew didn't want to come back. But she did say she was thankful to know that the dark haired man was still living and breathing. That amounted to something and warranted a visit to the Blooming Springs onsen to unwind and wash away the virtual grime off their avatars. Though the location in itself was already a sight to behold. Such a far cry to the resorts and spas he was accustomed to. Not that he was complaining. There were a handful of eastern style spa resorts in Wakeford that he could compare it to, but this was the closest thing to the authentic as he could get. Though as excited he was to experience this authentic augmented reality hot spring, a daunting foe revealed itself upon paying for the usage of the facilities and getting ready for the dip.

There was only one entrance to the hot spring.

Initially, Raime thought it had separated into two separate portions of the spring. But upon passing through the threshold of the entrance, his assumption was disproven rather quickly. He was instantaneously met by a number of both men and women enjoying the springs as well as the views. His mind raced a mile a minute. Darting from thoughts of mixed bathing being a thing in CaCo, to planning on what his next action be, to thanking God that he wore a mask and a towel to hide his embarrassment. A singular beat of the heart had passed and the one armed scout had dashed into the opaque waters of the spring. Expertly navigating the visitors positions with only a look. Garnering a more than a few looks himself as the sight of a one armed man in a mask zip through the fog and into the water was quite a sight to behold. This is gonna be an awkward few minutes. Made even more awkward by the fact that he seemed to be the only one wearing a mask...and staring straight to the starry night sky and nowhere else.

At least he it was comfortable to feel the hot waters melt away his virtual body's accumulated tension and stress in moments. He guessed it wasn't all that weird.

Then a little girl clad in armor popped beside Ames.

"Spoke too soon."

Ames was ready to forget the whole day's events. Well, she would if she could, but the spring's water couldn't wash away thoughts or memories. She'd stayed with the group because they were familiar and fun, and despite how annoyed she'd gotten with them during their trip into the caverns she didn't intend to abandon them just yet. Still, something about the day's happenings still irked her. Still lingered in her mind. She sighed, slipped deeper into the water until everything below her chin was submerged, and then sighed again - contentedly this time.

This hot spring really was a blessing. A perfect temperature, hot but not painful, with a beautiful venue and even more beautiful view from where it say nestled in the mountains. Ames was so glad they ended the day with this, even more than completing the prerequisites for her next class she just really appreciated the pleasant soak. It had surprised her at first that the spring was co-ed, but given that everyone was an online avatar it wasn't that uncomfortable. For most of them. Raime seemed disturbed at first, but at least he was in the water. Ames had respectfully not tried to peek at his junk, though for the red haired Animist herself - or rather in this form, himself - well he was letting it all hang out. It was pretty refreshing, plus with the censor on it's not like anyone could see anything but a pixelated rectangle even if the water was crystal clear.

So Ames relaxed, mostly submerged with her head cleaning back against the warm stone and her eyes closed. Gentle conversation echoed around the spring, and all was well. She might have nodded off if it weren't for a sudden, sharp pain that lanced through her hand. Her eyes snapped open and she shot up straight.

"Fuck!" she hissed, wrenching her arm out of the water and ready to punch whatever asshole decided to mess with her while she was enjoying her bath. Instead she found a mark on the back of her hand, still burning. And a young girl, forming from nothing and speaking to her.

Ames was bewildered. She stared in silence for an awkward amount of time before she understood what was happening thanks to the game's notification. Her own Nuclei, and it was a cute little knight! Ames stood up out of the water suddenly in all of her pixelated glory. Britomart, as the girl had named herself, very purposefully kept her gaze focused on Ames' face. Her own was still hot with embarrassment at the situation she'd been summoned in. Or manifested in, Ames wasn't sure if Britomart was a character that existed before now or if she was created on the spot. Either way, the Animist smiled brilliantly at her.

"Oh my God! You - you're my knight?"

"A humble squire," Britomart corrected, "yours to command."

At this point Ames had all but forgotten the thrumming pain in her hand. She looked over at her party, and consequently the other patrons of the hot spring, posing and presenting Britomart for all to see. If it was possible, the squire flushed even darker being put on the spot.

"How cool is that?!" Ames exclaimed, "a squire! Britomart - oh, can I call you Bri?"

"I... yes?"

"Bri is my Nuclei!" Ames looked as though she was about to read through every line of text in the ability's description to her friends. Right here, surrounded by people in various states of undress. Britomart coughed lightly.

"I-if I may be so bold, my liege...?" she said, waiting for Ames' approval to go on. At first Ames didn't grant it just because she'd never thought to be the lord people were asking permission to speak before, but it clicked soon enough. "What's up?"

Britomart cleared her throat, gathering her wits again. "If you have no need of me at the moment and wish to continue your bath, I would not bother you any further. You can dismiss me and summon me again at anytime."

"Oh, uh, with this right?" Ames turned her hand over, examining the brand etched into her skin. She willed Britomart away to try it out, and sure enough the mists of the hot spring swirled around the young squire. When they cleared she was gone. Sensing that her master might summon her back immediately, Britomart reached out to Ames, her voice much more confident in the confines of Ames' mind.

"We can continue to talk like this if you like, my liege. If you have any questions of me, please ask them."

"So cool..." Ames breathed. She hadn't expected to get a Nuclei so quickly, and definitely hadn't expected it would take a form like this. The Animist reentered the water, sinking quickly back down and smiling to herself. "You guys aren't gonna believe the details on this."

For the remainder of their time at the hot spring, Ames chatted all about her new Nuclei. It's uses, her thoughts on it, and especially about how none of them were allowed to be weird or mean to Bri or else she would "actually fight [them] IRL." She also spoke to Bri through their psychic connection. First meetings were always a little rough, but Bri had had one hell of an ice breaker. As for the day, Ames supposed that all's well that ends well.

It was a blur. Had it really only been two days, when you’ve lived through six? Whether out of desperation to make up for lost time or out of a desire to remain social and keep up with one’s friends, you continued to dive into the fantastic world of Cacophony Concord, breathing in air purer than any that you could breathe outside, experiencing wonders natural and magical, which regardless of repetition, never truly lost their charms. Goldspun Fields and the deadly critters lurking between golden longgrass. Pearl Bloom River and the amphibious creatures at once comical and lethal. Thunderstruck Grove and the shadows that lurked at the edge of your sanity. And Nyu-Taro, the untamed city-state, from which all corners of Horogi interacted without threat of violence, from which all corners of the world first arrived to properly immigrate into the nation of perpetual war. In your dreams, it haunted you, brilliant ideals of a paradise craft of code, outshining the grim humdrum of reality, of political divides and mounting tensions, of acid rain and desertification.

Of course, even the worse news was never about your own cities, your own homes. It was radio static, compared to immediate concerns. Stocks traded in consideration to the calculated whims of the free market. Musings of marriage murmured between dates and kisses. Late night conversations across all castes of the social hierarchy. Brotherly rivalry, reignited through video chat and parental comparisons. Impatient seconds, crawling away as the timer continued to tick. Moments of levity found, even in the maelstrom of academics and filial obligation. Between the necessities of physical existence and the flashes of fantastic living, a life beyond both still peeked in occasionally for you, reminding you of the small joys that persisted still.

But war, war was on the horizon. Chances for glory, for promotion, for recognition, for loot, for blood. It was a war that could shape the entire political landscape of Horogi. It was a war that could engrave your name upon the history books of a world separate from your own. It was the impetus of change, and undoubtedly the termination of many lives. It was something that you absolutely could not miss.

So you plug in once more, feeling technology seep into your brain, dragging your senses away.

And you fall.

Search for it, starve for it, thirst for it, struggle for it, and seize it.

That which you desire most.

War!

Between the Mora-Sho clan, scions to the greatest disaster that befell Horogi, and the Tato-Ie clan, perpetually in the shadow of the titan they split themselves off from! The Ryoku-Jo and Sa-Li, both opportunists, shadowed the outskirts of this conflict, none but the clan heads truly certain of whether they would act. And the Gakui-Re, a people without nations, an army without borders, wildcards that could drastically shift the tides of any battle they involved themselves in. It had been a long time since any of the clans had last pronounced their desire for wealth and land, and now, within the city-state of Nyu-Taro, on the morning of the war’s start, the city was in a fever pitch. Foreign mercenaries from lands as far away as Deneb and Erid strode boldly, lead by leaders both callous and charismatic. Merchants, overstocked with wartime necessities of food and potions, peddled them at prices that announced discounts…from overpriced values. And despite the bloody business of war, there was a festive atmosphere as well, exceeding even that of the conclusion of the continent-wide tournament just nine days ago. Death, violent death, was simply a fact of life for the Riens of Horogi, and Nyu-Taro, ever neutral, could watch any of the battles from a safe distance.

And, amongst those milling about the Keystone Plaza, five figures arrived at the preordained time, all greatly changed from a mere six days.

Of prodigious size, such that even his own oversized axe was rendered small, Klein was the first to emerge from his pilgrimage to the mountains. The blood of giants now flowed through his veins, and he towered above many others, a behemoth of physical prowess, experienced both in battle against monsters as well as against other Immortals. After all, though he did not yet commit to joining the Gakui-Re clan, he had certainly worked for them, ambushing merchants, collecting loans, and all the other small-time thug activities expected of someone who couldn’t truly get involved in the greater operations of the bandit clan. They would welcome him with open arms, if he ever asked. But for now, the Mountain Man had no intention on asking, for on his quest to obtaining his desire for a truly unkillable build, Klein had heard about something else. A rare low-rank job that could only be uncovered in the territories, or perhaps history, of the Mora-Sho clan: [Dead Soldier].

Prodigious size alone did not dissuade a sharpened blade though, and in the time he had spent becoming accustomed to possessing only one truly functioning arm, Raime’s blade had not just become sharpened, but had become teethed and possessing a hand cannon. His own studies, more cerebral in nature, granted him a small collection of common and uncommon consumables at his disposal, as well as the ability to make more if he could find the materials for them. Nyu-Taro was still just the ‘tutorial’ area of Horogi though, home to only a small selection of vegetation that a beginner alchemist could transform into higher quality ingredients. If he sought the battlefield though, following in the path of the Tato-Ie army, perhaps there would be more chance for quality ingredients. Much has been said, after all, of the blood lilies that bloomed upon the Plains of Repentance.

Repentance, or any cerebral activity, however, was the furthest thing from Magpie’s mind. Having had the least amount of time to grind for the war, due in part to her heroic sacrifice within the territories of the gyunin, the Brawler-Strongman-Qi Gong had absolutely destroyed her soul trying to depopulating all the farming zones within the nature. Her body count must have numbered in the hundreds now, her fists stained with the viscera of a dozen demons. If Klein was a mountain, immovable and impassable, Magpie was a drill, capable of piercing both the earth and the heavens. She had become strong. And in the clash of armies, she would grow even stronger. The Path of the Macho was never-ending, after all, and her steps matched the tempo of war.

But if war was the end for Magpie, war was a means for Amulak. His continued progression into the realm of the dead had only added a more and more sinister air around the man, face obscured by an impenetrable veil. Even the stone beneath his feet seemed to blacken somewhat with his approaching footsteps as lightless fire flickered within his lantern. A few faces in the crowds of adventurers buzzing about the war even noticed him, waving or shouting a quick greeting. Though his fame was insignificant within solo arena PvP, which was what people were naturally inclined to valuing, Amulak had formed a half-decent reputation for himself in randomized 3v3 PvP matches, slowly becoming accustomed to expecting the unexpected. With thousands of job classes and an infinite amount of permutations available due to Nuclei, equipment, and personal habits, it was impossible to have perfect counters for every scenario, but very possible to train one’s skill to analyze and adapt on the fly, which he had done to great effect. And if he could replicate that same success on the battlefield, if he could play any significant role in driving back the Tato-Ie army…perhaps there was an opportunity for a meteoric rise into the echelons of the Mora-Sho clan.

Politics and clan advancement, of course, was something that Ames simply couldn’t be bothered to really care about. After all, the flame-haired swordsman was not only the proprietor of a travelling inn, but also, as he learned from his more hardcore gamer friends after that fateful night, the person who possessed one of the rarest Nuclei types currently in the game: the Maiden-Hybrid. Between visits to the Shin-Yu Temple (of which Lugh had never returned to since), keeping up the grind with his other regular party members, and exploring both the potential of The Sweet Maid and the potential for in-game fashion, Ames had been keeping busy, and had been keeping busy in such a way that when the time came for the war, he hardly even realized it. After all, it was just an in-game war. It may as well be treated as a scripted event, like any other large-scale MMORPG event that didn’t really alter the world in any way. So, it must be fine too, then, to just have fun.

After all, Cacophony Concord was just a game. An escape from a grayscale reality.

And, as the five of them shared their greetings, they could all hear the rumbling of an engine in the distance, an anachronism within the Eastern Fantasy environment they’ve grown accustomed to.

The roar of the engine, and the arrival of a friend.

A dark-skinned man with a wild look in his eyes looked at the group with a grin, his hands in his hypothetical pockets and his primitive raincoat opened to reveal his shirtless and tattooed figure to the world. The markings on his skin seemed to be of a primitive bent, with iconography of wolves scattered about a living canvas. On his back was a rather beastly spear, its keen edge looked as if it thirsted for blood. He leaned on what seemed to be the source of the noise: a monster of darkened iron and fire, a motorcycle that was indeed quite out-of-place in this Eastern landscape. Raising one of his hands to his head, he waved to the group coolly once he was sure his presence was known to them.

"Sup, nerds. Finally got some reliable WiFi. Hope I'm not too late." The man spoke a familiar voice in a somewhat gravelly, almost feral tone. It's as if he growled every so slightly with each word he spoke. "Ah, right. I was supposed to say something about snakes, wasn't I?" He quipped, his tongue turning into that of a serpent's momentarily. Of course, it was clear just who he was to the group.

HP 2160/2160 SP 2370/2370 MP 3060/3060

Leif yawned and stretched as he approached the group, snapping a finger at the motorcycle as if it were some sort of subordinate. "Arion, wait for me at the gate." He ordered, the bike obliging as its engine roared, blazing forth in the blink of an eye. "I played around a bit until I got to a good enough timezone for me to meet up with you all, and I gotta say the mechanics of this game is pretty tight. Riding and fishing feel just like it should be. Tho I gotta say, a bit pissed I got myself locked into the Shaman path. A bit too smelly for my taste."

Leif put his arms behind his head as he reached the group, a bored expression on his face.

"Well, I don't know about you all, but I don't give two shits about the war. Both the major sides look too edgy for my taste. Honestly most of the factions seem kinda lame. That said, if you all have a plan to get on one bandwagon or another, hope you all have fun. I've got my own business to settle."

He took out a symbol from one of his pseudopockets, showing it to the group.

"This look familiar to any of you? I've got a bone to pick with a couple of bastards sporting this thing."
