SWPW was nice. I don't really know why. Not enough manpower, elitism, little player interest, I really do not know. However, I noticed someone request permission to start a Mando world. That could be nice. But if I had to lay my cards on the table I would vouch for a comic book persistent world. It would surely have the standard mechanics of what ever worlds there's been and what worlds there may be.

That's my thought. MCU, DCU, canon and original metas and supers etc.

Thanks for reading this. I don't want any kind of an administrative position but I think it would be fun

It's not quite a PW but there has been a Marvel/DC crossover RP that's been going for some time now.

Eh, I don't think it'd be possible, concerning the history of PWs on the guild. The last and only two on nu-Guild have been bogged down by rules, drama, MIA players, etc. There's a lot of issues and kinks that need to be worked out first before any new PWs are made, I'd say. Not to add that we haven't heard anything about whether or not the SWPW will be returning yet.

As for a MCU/DCU/whatever superhero PW, though, I'm not so sure it'd be a good idea. Power creep seems incredibly possible when it comes to superheroes, and canon characters are blargh if not in a background role, at least to me.

I think a PW could work but it needs someone in charge to prevent it from growing too quickly. SWPW pretty quickly had more and more threads. It's a good thing there's the interest but when it explodes that quick it immediately gets unwieldy.

Superheroes might work, IMO, if you kept them at a street level. Maybe have people RP as villains or cops or rivals. Somewhat like Arena where you set folks up with opposing forces. If I'm Batman someone else is Bane, if I'm Daredevil someone else is Kingpin. But it would rely on me and that other writer having a good rapport.

Maybe a persistent universe for a completely original story line? Instead of a fandom.

We already had one of those prior to the SWPW. It flopped hard shortly after release.

All good points yet I still think with enough effort it could work.

How many times are we going to talk about the PW? It needs a lot more than a simple genre/setting swap to be successful.

It should get peoples attention. What is popular right now?

Cyberpunk 2077.

Persistent World roleplays that have an entire subforum dedicated to them will never work on RPG, it is statistically impossible to come up with a setting and plot that will allow everyone to play. SW PW is prime example of this: you alienate a shit tonne of people who don't care for SW, they then alienated a shit tonne of interested people through the era they choice, and the remainder was, effectively, bullied out, until there was barely enough people left to make it a "normal" RP much less a large persistent world RP. There was 1 active thread at any time and that was mostly a self contained group of people.

You cannot find a setting that interests enough people on RPG, because RPG is incredibly diverse in the topics people roleplay about, unless you make the setting so incredibly broad that it becomes uninteresting and provides no plothooks for anyone.

There have been so many discussions about this now that I've even lost all interest in arguing about it, but the crux of it is that both SW PW and the first PW we had were grossly mismanaged, there wasn't enough players (and there are even fewer active members on RPG now, so you will never even come close to the same level of members in any PW) and there were no clear plans for any of the PWs. We could chalk this up to the alleged hateboner I have for PW's but you can ask any player that actually played in the PW's and they'll agree, because I've asked a bunch myself. Neither should have been allowed to become a thing but they did, and perhaps they could have worked, but not on RPG. This is just not the site for it. For a great number of reasons.

I really wish we'd stop pushing time into a project like PW's when nobody on RPG has experience running one, nobody has the drive to do it, and the people who do have the drive for it are not the right people for the job.

EDIT: I also just realized that none of the PW's we've had so far were actually PW's and were gross misinterpretations of what a PW is supposed to do/be. There's a reason you only really see PW's on very large forums or on forums dedicated to a specific fandom.

100%.

It'll be just dead on arrival again if it doesn't see a complete overhaul.

The Star Wars PW had people's attention for a few months before the player count nearly went in a vertical line from everyone going MIA/dropping/losing interest. As Broken said, the setting isn't the matter, it's literally everything else.

There's nothing stopping you from executing a PW on your own to begin with, allowing people to traverse multiple threads with the same character. Doing it on a smaller scale rather than hopping to a giant subforum from the start will probably help, actually.

Yeah; this always bothered me. This isn't a jab at the players, but it was confusing to call the PW a PW when in reality it wasn't much more than a glorified sandbox with individual stories within it. Reminds me of the first PW in which there was a Mod-Only super faction that was essentially the top dog of the galaxy and yet nothing ever happened with it. The faction just sat there doing nothing for the life of the PW, which is kind of what happened with the SWPW too. Didn't really see the Republic and Empire skirmishing, no galactic wide bounty hunts like the Great Hunt, etc. I believe there was supposed to be some kind of thing going on with Ruby's Selene character, but I'm not entirely sure, though.

Finally someone else said it, lol. Give people an entire universe to play with, an entire official set of lore books, and most of them will be content to sit in.. some Twi'lek cantina, drinking beer and looking at eachother in badass ways, without actually doing anything meaningful. The entire SWPW could've been summed up in 3 threads with the maximum character-count worth of rules (which was another issue -- advertise an RP as ''easy to get into'' and then make the CS and rules convoluted as fuck and provide absolutely no leniency to people) and a single thread where people shitposted about thinking Twi'leks are hot, or something. That's it. Send tweet. That was SWPW.

At least the first PW had some stuff going on at first, but it died so fast you'd barely be able to tell something happened. Galactic-scale setting, and not enough people to fill even a single planet.

I think Bango had a good point earlier that I'd used before to explain why the PW's we'd seen aren't actual PW's -- street-level PW's would work best here. I even used superheroes as my example. You'd make a bunch of locations as threads, and people would come and go to these locations as needed. Batman is chasing the Joker from his mansion to, idk, 54th ave, and he'd have to move from his mansion, write an exit post on that location, and then write an entry post in the 54th ave thread, interrupting everyone's RP to chase the Joker into some sewer manhole to go to the creepy underground Jokerbunker, or whatever. IDK, I never watched any Batman. He dances down some stairs or something?

Anyway, simply because you'd need multiple threads (that all need activity, or else it looks bad) and you can really only have your character in 1 thread at a time, you'd need a tonne of people and we don't have enough active users on RPG. So, there will never be a big PW again (at least, if we do the smart thing).

We should rather focus on the strengths of RPG, imho, which is diversity in writing. If we can find a way to turn that into something interesting, then we could have a really successful event. The contests are sorta that but they don't receive enough attention, both from the players and the admin.
