The Fight for Valeroma

1000 years ago there was a terrible war on Valeroma. A war that ravaged the lands. This was not just a world war, it was a global war. It was a war between races, species. Dragons and humans, Elves and Dwarves. It destroyed everything we know. It destroyed the economy of every nation on the planet, it destroyed each government, each countries hospitals, everything. This war sent everyone back to third world technology, swords, shields, but no guns or anything. But it was finally over, and for 1000 years there has been mostly peace among all the inhabitants on Valeroma. Peace among the races and the species.
There is, however, a catch. See, there is always a catch when it comes to world peace. World peace can only last so long. There is an ancient prophecy, a prophecy that speaks of destruction, of chaos. It goes like this:

When the night is dark and the moon is red
Hatched will be a dragon of dread
Eyes like amber and scales like the earth
More than the world his head will be worth
The dragon of dread will be a shifter and more
The kind of monster you read of only in lore
He will seek to rule the last of his race
And make the whole world know of his face

This prophecy speaks of tomorrow night. There is going to be a blood red moon tomorrow night, speaking of the blood shed in that war so many years ago. This prophecy speaks of a terrible creature, a Dragon shifter. He has a dragon form, and a human form. He is extremely powerful. His name? Vaeros.
There was an evil in the world before the war, an evil that seeks to ruin this world, to make life miserable. And for a while, he succeeded. But it was only temporary. So in a last ditch effort, he prophesied about a dragon that would rule over everyone, just when they get comfortable in the new world they've built.
CDragons are the ones we set in charge to make sure the world is safe from war, seeing as they are the kindest, and the wisest, species on the planet. But one dragon will change this...and almost eliminate them.

But with every cursed prophecy, there is a light of redemption. This one? One guide, and a group of Six young men and women, of various races, chosen at the end of the unspeakable war. They are the only ones who will be able to stop Vaeros, together. Together, they will bring peace to the world. Together, they will end Vaeros' crusade.

The Councils

Why are there councils?

Like every world, not everything or everyone is perfect. There are still people who are greedy and selfish. The Councils are there to keep law and order, the High Council also makes important decisions for the country. Kind of like a leader, but it's a group of people instead of just one.

The Lower Council

The Lower council is the local council. Every village should have one, but not all do. Some villages are self governed. Anything not handled by the LC is handled by the Higher Council [HC].

The High Council

The High Council is similar to the modern day Supreme Court in the US, but better. The council is made up of globally elected individuals of any race. They serve a single term of the equivalent of 8 of our years. They handle serious issues in Valeroma, including trials that are deemed too important or dangerous for the lower councils.

Races

Dragons

Dragons are considered the peacekeepers and protectors of the land. They have been the protectors of Valeroma since the beginning of the new era of peace. Despite the myth that they only breathe fire, there are many different elements a dragon can have. They can be water, fire, earth, air, and ice elements. Dragons are known for their kindness. They are open to share their wisdom with anyone who asks, and want to help those in need. This is why their species volunteered for the position that they currently have. Their average lifespan is around 500 years, the second longest lifespan next to the elves.

Now, 99% of dragons fit into the description above. The other 1%, however, are outcasts. To be outcast from the dragons is to be outcasts to everyone. It is incredibly difficult for the dragons to outcast one of their own, it is an absolute last resort. The dragon has to do something so incredibly heinous that the protectors think that they aren't redeemable.

Elves

Elves are proud beings. Though proud, they do try their best to be kind. Their version of kindness isn’t the typical definition of it though, so it’s shown in different ways. They tend to be a little egotistical, but are also easier to humble than they let on. They have a rich culture that varies among the different elven villages. Magic is a common ability among Elves, and is practiced and taught from a young age when a gift is found. They are very family and species oriented. They are the worlds healers, seeing as they have the strongest magic of the races. Average lifespan is around 1500 years.

Culture wise, they are very set in their ways. They have rules for how magic is to be used. Only for good, not for harm. (their version of the hippocratic oath). Things have been done the way they have been for centuries, and they don't see a reason to change it. Most elves are happy in their status quo, sure there are a few who would like to see change and vary their own belief, but in general they don't create uproar or upset. However, there are groups of elves that absolutely hate the status quo, and the rules they have in place regarding magic. These elves have intentionally set themselves apart from the others, or have been discovered and outcast by the elves, to set up their own community. They are known as dark elves. They use what's called black magic. They use it for however they please. They cast curses to harm instead of spells to heal. They're rebels, and want to see things change, they just go about it in a very wrong way. They are dangerous, when they think it's necessary. Now, using magic to harm comes at a cost. Normally, elves have a light complexion, almost pale like. Black magic taints the pigment of their skin, darkening their skin. If they choose to, they can make their eyes glow, but most of the time, they don't. It's just for dramatic effect.

Dwarves

Dwarves are known for their craftsmanship. They are the best blacksmiths and craftsman in Valeroma, due to generations of generations of training and passing down. They are also miners who work in mines to get the metal for their trade. While they tend to be intimidating, they are generally a kind and happy race. They have wicked senses of humor, and love to try to make others laugh. Their average lifespan is about 250-300 years. WIP

Shifters

Nobody really knows much about shifters. We know they are born when another shifter has a child, in fact that's the only way a shifter is able to exist. At least one of a shifters parents has to be a shifter for them to have their ability. They are able to shift between two different species entirely, and no one knows how they originally happened. Shifters are generally integrated in whichever culture they are born to, before they shift for the first time. Shifters are accepted by all races except the Humans. Humans see them as outcasts, the unknown to be feared and hunted.

Humans

Humans are the only race that is completely magicless. They are a fearful race, humans. While they aren't violent by nature, they are ruled by fear. In reality, they want to be what we would consider "good." They are extremely fearful of anything that they don't know about. For this reason, they are very wary of the other races. They are a very reactive race, they act first and think later. This is why they are considered violent. Because of this fear, they do have 'rules' in place that can be seen as discriminatory. If a human were to be in an intimate relationship with another race, they would more than likely be outcast. There are those groups that will fight for the end to these rules [you are welcome to play a human in that group, if you so wish]. WIP.

The Chosen Ones

The Chosen ones are the ones who will be uniting to go defeat Vaeros. Later on, there will be a second part of the prophecy that reveals more about them. I would prefer if we could keep the genders even. These Chosen One's (or CO's as I call them) would come from very different backgrounds, different people. They probably won't all get along at first, but with time, they should learn to act more like a team.

The Guide

The Guide would be more of a minor character in this roleplay. The guide would be what draws the 6 CO's together. He would also guide them along the way, if they need strong advice. Or to get them back on track if they lose sight of their purpose. He would appear to each of the CO's in turn, how he would do that, would be by the player and the GM's choice, but is open for discussion in the OOC. He wouldn't be necessarily traveling with them, but would come in and out the group. A spirit would probably be the best way for this to happen, but if you want to make this happen some other way, feel free. :)

Name: Astrid Ironrune

Age: 65 (equivalent of around 21)

Race: Dwarf

Appearance:

Short and stout as is typical of her race, Astrid stands at 4'3" and weighs a beefy 160lbs. Due to her job as a blacksmith, and her martial training, she's heavily muscled. Her hair is red, thick and wild, streaked with white, and tamed only by a loose braid. She has a ruddy complexion, bearing numerous scars from brawls. As far as clothing goes, she keeps her outfits practical with simple leathers.

Personality: Astrid is as fiery as the spelled weapons she crafts. Her confidence borders on arrogance, and given the opportunity to brag about her deeds, she will (often exaggerating them). Determined to make a name for herself and her family, she's eager to take on challenges, even if they're too much for her. Those who get past this prideful exterior will find she's an incredibly loyal and protective friend, although it may well fall to them to rein in her antics.

Strengths:

• Astrid is pretty good with daggers and hammers - in her community, it's believed those who craft weapons should know how to use them, plus it's best to be able to defend against thieves and mountain-dwelling monsters.
• She knows some magic, specifically the inscription of runes into crafted objects. Her affinity is fire, so she imbues her weapons with this element; when the weapon is held and the rune activated via words in an ancient language of magic, the tip becomes wreathed in flames. If not deactivated on command, the rune will remain active for one minute or so.
• As a dwarf, she's sturdy and able to take hits.

Weaknesses:

• With zero experience or skill in ranged fighting, Astrid is only able to fight close range.
• If her runes are used too often in succession, they can damage or even destroy the item. Crafting a spelled item is also a delicate and painstaking progress - if done badly, the magic will be erratic, and the item could harm the wielder.
• Her pride, stubbornness, and desperation to prove herself can easily land her in trouble.

Brief Bio: The Ironrune lineage was once renowned as some of the best crafters and runeworkers known to dwarvenkind. The items they created and traded throughout the land bore various magical effects - gauntlets that increased physical strength, blades imbued with elemental power, and shields that could generate temporary energy barriers, to name a few. However, 150 years ago, their reputation became tainted. A prominent metalworker, Hakon, was found to have delved into forbidden knowledge and traded cursed items on the black market.

Ever since, the family has been treated with suspicion. Astrid, as Hakon's granddaughter, grew up with firsthand experience of this. The eldest of several siblings, she'd frequently protect them from bullies, getting into numerous fights in the process. As she learned the Ironrune trade and techniques, she put her all into her crafting, aiming for nothing less than perfection in an attempt to salvage the family name. While some recognised her work as honest, whispers and wary looks were still all too common.

It all came to a head when her father found his workshop smashed up by thugs. He was able to rebuild the place, but was still deeply shaken by the incident, and fearful for his children. Astrid promised her family she'd do something to restore their honour. The problem was, she didn't know what. True to her word nonetheless, she left her mountain homeland, determined to find a way.

Other: Chocolate and coffee are the best combo.

Odran Stormweaver

Name: Odran Stormweaver
Age: 121

Race: Dwarf

Appearance:
Odran is a stout and sturdily built dwarf, with a bold stance and an intimidating disposition for one so short. Forged by wine, battle, and song, Odran's girth and thick trunk of a body belies a surprising amount of deft and dexterity. Standing at a height of 4'8", he often stands no higher than the chest of other mortal beings, but is incredibly tall for a dwarf. Despite his diminutive stature, he's denser than most humans, and weighs in at about 200 pounds, an amount comparable to a human upwards of six feet in height.

His body is composed mostly of muscle and bound within the relatively stout frame of his race, and his face is adorned with a dense, rough beard, and the dark brown hair over his head is pulled into thick dreadlocks. This thick dwarf dresses in a combination of padded cloth, and a chainmail hauberk underneath a hardened steel plate carapace, but his short legs stomp on the ground with surprising speed and lightness as he walks. Upon his face sits a wide, fat nose, with a crooked angle from many a fistfight, and sharp eyes of the color of steel. His face is often adorned with a wry grin, and covered with scars from past wars.

Personality:
An earnest, boisterous soul, like many a dwarf of Valeroma, Odran much like other dwarves is a stubborn, but honorable, hard headed bloke who prefers ale and song to politics and trickery. Blunt, straightforward and to the point, Odran is rarely afraid to speak his mind and tell things exactly as he sees it. suspicious of, but not hostile towards magic and the unnatural, Odran will not hesitate to express his unease over the use of such elements but nevertheless admits their usefulness in many situations. Despite his jovial demeanor, Odran has surprising amounts of depth to his thoughts, his loud cheers and alcohol laden breath a masked visage for a more logical, intrinsically calculative mind. Odran has a very solid understanding of physics, and warfare, and a well developed moral compass.

While Odran is vocal and friendly, and quick to throw the title of comrade around, it isn't until another's character has been demonstrated does Odran truly begin showing trust. Odran carefully observes those surrounding him, judging the character of others even whilst he makes jokes and exchanges story and drink. Odran is honorable and relatively unselfish, though if given the choice, he would prefer him and his own success over others. Despite his affable nature, Odran knows how to act when its time to get serious. When its time to conduct business, Odran's demeanor switches to that of a calm and collected professional. A professional soldier through and through, Odran fights with a cold and calm efficiency, and only rarely has emotional outbursts.

Strengths:

• Career Soldier - Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy: Odran is a capable career soldier. Proficient with a variety of weapons, armor and tactics, Odran finds himself most at home sitting inside a suit of heavy steel, and either firing an Storm-Pattern Repeating Crossbow from a fixed position or charging into an enemy's flank with a bayonet. A strong and durable fighter, Odran has considerable staying power in a fight, and has surprising amounts of dexterity and deft.
• Dwarven Ranger - Despite his heavy armor, Odran is surprisingly light footed, and is a capable scout and ranger, moving steadily through the underbrush to locate targets of opportunity to eliminate. He is a proficient tracker and has a sharp eye and keen sense of direction.
• Tinkerer - All dwarves seem to practice some craftsmanship or another. While not a dedicated craftsdwarf, Odran is well versed with the workings of the weapons and equipment used by the Ironborn Free Company, and knows how to maintain and modify his own weapons and armor.

Weaknesses:

• Non-Magical - Odran is currently incapable of casting or creating any magical effects on his own, and must therefore rely on others capable of doing so.
• Short Stature - While dextrous and strong, Odran's stature and heavy armor doesn't do him any favors when it comes to flat movement speed. He prefers to fight on solid ground and would likely sink in the water on account of his heavy weapons and armor. Something about his lack of height also makes Odran a bit fearful of long drops.
• Specialist Equipment - Odran's equipment was specialized for his own use- or use by the Ironborn Company. As a result repairs and maintenance can be painstaking and time intensive, depending on the amount of damage received by his equipment.

Brief Bio:
A career soldier, scout, siege specialist, and sniper, Odran was born to the Stormweaver clan, a powerful crafts-clan of some repute, well known throughout Valeroma for their weapons- particularly their Storm-Pattern Repeating Crossbows, with many aspiring warriors seeking pieces of armor or weapons crafted by his family. While most took up the family trades, Odran instead went about a different way to seek his fortune. Some took to trade, others took to craftsmanship. Odran took to the sciences- the military sciences, to be precise. Odran joined the ranks of the Stormweaver clan warriors, here he would earn his keep through blood and sweat. The clan warriors were divided into companies, each with their own storied past.

Odran joined the Ironborn Free Company as a Ranger in its service. With his technical prowess, as well as his skill in combat, Odran advanced steadily through the ranks, becoming a trusted sub-leader of his squad commander by the end of his first campaign across the dwarven mountains. By the end of his second campaign, Odran was given command of his own squad, and by the end of his fifth campaign, he was the commander of the Ironborn Company's Recon Corps, and a notable veteran in his own right. When he was chosen, Odran would reluctantly leave the ranks of his comrades to join the company of the chosen.

I'm interested if there is a slot still open, and would like to run a concept by you. Humans are magic-less, but would you consider a human with a limited amount of magic that he cannot control? My idea is that he is turned out by his kin because of this unexplained use of magic, particularly in a race that has no magic ability. His character journey would be learning to understand the origins of his magic and where it has come from, as well as trying to learn to control his abilities.
