Urban Shadows - Heebie Jeebies

Hello and welcome to my RP thread for Urban Shadows. An Apocalypse Engine game in which you play as, and I use the term loosely, 'people' simply trying to get by. The only trouble is that these 'people' had the misfortune of being born in a dark urban fantasy setting where politics are the order of the day and debts are not to be dishonored lightly.

Places are still open, so should you get the feeling that this is your kinda game. Make your interest known and click here for the rules.

Here's one I made earlier.

@RBYDark @XxFellsingxX
I'll be waiting a few more days before starting the game to see if I can draw in another player or two. In the meantime, tell me a little more about your debtors and creditors.

While I'm not sure about the other debts, I do know that "You are helping someone realize their true potential through your visions. They owe you a debt" refers to Trinity. She's one of Kendra's roommates and been her friend since college, and Kendra has been using her visions to try and help Trinity in her job in forensics. It's Kendra's way of trying to pay Trinity back for remaining friends with over what has been - in Kendra's mind at least - a tough few years.

Let's see...

• You’re protecting someone from a dark power. They owe you 2 Debts.: This one's definitely Ravindra - as I noted in Mitra's introduction, Mitra kept him from making a deal with a demon. And honestly has to keep making sure he doesn't take bad deals with the other supernatural entities they're both super-aware of now.

• Someone is trying to save you and keeps suffering for it. You owe them 2 Debts.: Chandra Singh - Mitra's mother-in-law - feels like a good candidate for this. I figure she's some kind of politician (city council? Mayor? Assistant/deputy city manager?) but was actually more aware of the supernatural side of things than her son or son-in-law. Of course, if this is keeping things too "inside", I can come up with a friend of Mitra for this role.

• You have a demon patron who holds the contract for your soul. You owe them 3 Debts.: my patron, obviously. Can I select a specific demon or might that mess with the setting too much?

Does Ravindra have some sort of quality that makes the supernatural entities seek him out specifically or is he the one that is always going to them?

I'm fine with all of these things you mentioned. I only ask that Chandra starts somewhere at the middle of the political hierarchy at most rather than the very top. City council is fine now, the Mayor's Office comes later.

The Apocalypse Engine runs on player input. Feel free to select whichever demon you please. You shape the setting just as much as I do.

@rush99999 Ravindra's always seeking them out. He wants to be someone who leaves a (positive) mark on the world and has to be reminded there are people who would care what happens to his immortal soul/personality/life and he can't just trade them away willy-nilly.

Yeah, I'll make her a city council member then. Works for me!

Awesome, thanks c: If I'm allowed a higher demon, Paimon's always been a favorite of mine. If not, Buer's fine too.

Paimon is fine by me. And I'm sure she'd love having someone around who actually respects her and doesn't just think of her as emergency food.

@Guardian Angel Haruki
I don't mind in the slightest.

Tell me more about Grace's debtors and creditors.

Thinking about it for a bit "Someone helps you understand your dreams and visions. You owe them 2 debts" could refer to Kendra's other roommate, Aliss. She's the one who gave Kendra her tarot cards and is into witchy and paranormal stuff (despite the fact Aliss has no power of her own).

If any of the other players want "You've had a dire prophecy about someone, but you don't know how to help them... yet. You owe them a debt" to be about their PC, feel free to ask. Kendra having a vision about one of the other characters and wanting to help them might be interesting.

*Someone, or someone’s progenitor, was involved in your death. They owe you a Debt.
Maybe @RBYDark's Mitra, or Rivandra or Chandra, was somehow involved with Grace's death?

*Someone is watching out for a family member of yours (Little Sister, Charity). You owe them 2 Debts.
((I'll keep this open in case another player comes in))

*You are haunting someone and they know it. You owe them a Debt.
I can't help but think it would be funny for @XxFellsingxX's Kendra to be haunted as well as having visions.

"Hey. Hey, I know you can see me..."
"Go away, Ghost!"

I think Grace would haunt Kendra because she found out that Kendra has been having visions that are relevant, even before Grace's death, so Grace would try to hear those visions so that she can try and prevent more tragedies (example: deaths like her own) from occurring.

That would be a very interesting dynamic. Kendra wants to help people but her previous experiences of telling people about her visions and trying to help have been... mixed to say the least.

Plus I can totally imagine her snarking at Grace.

"If you're going haunt my flat, can you at least pay a share of the rent?"
"I mean, I'm not technically *living* here..."

Also constant jokes about calling an exorcist.

Maybe Mitra on the outside? You mentioned the death being at the hands of a CEO during a job interview, and the Singh family are mostly into politics than traditional business. As mentioned, Chandra Singh is on the city council, and I suppose Ravindra probably works as a law clerk when he's not off chasing paranormal entities. Even then, I think I'd need some more details before I agree that Mitra was involved in a murder. Partly because he's only been a legal citizen for 4-5 years, and I'm a little worried about the stereotypes around less-than-legal migrants.

I was thinking that when it came to Grace's death, the CEO murdered her because she was working on an article that was going to expose corruption from a political official who's higher up on the ladder.

Because that CEO is connected and benefitting from that corruption, but Grace didn't know it at the time, he took the interview as the perfect opportunity to get rid of her.

Maybe Mitra wasn't the murderer, but maybe he was there when it happened, and he couldn't (or simply didn't) do anything?

Being threatened with deportation might've been one way to make Mitra silent, but I'm not sure it would've been effective for long. If the CEO threatened the Singhs, that would probably work in the long run but I wonder if it introduces an element that unnecesarily complicates things. Just, Mitra can be selfish, but I'm not sure he's 'cover up a murder even under duress' selfish, unless it occurred fairly recently? Selling your soul changes a man. Was it within the past 18 months, you think?

Yes, I was definitely thinking that her murder is very recent, say around 1-2 weeks ago.

Then I suppose it's doable that it was Mitra. I don't really have any rational reason to say 'no'.

....I totally thought the second link was going to lead to Paimon from Magi the Labyrinth of Magic, or Paimon from Helluva Boss.
