Species: Carbuncle Folk

About Carbuncle Folk

Carbuncles as a species look like a mix between the feline folk and the vulpine folk. Most carbuncles have white or brown fur while the rarest ones have green or blue; some of them even have two tails. Their most distinguishable feature is a red gem on their foreheads. This has made the species develop a sense of pride within themselves and superiority above other species because they consider being able to naturally grow a precious stone from their bodies is a 'blessing from the gods'. Of course, not all carbuncles agree to this sentiment. Monarchy is still practiced in some countries in the west with most of the royal families consisting of carbuncle folk.

There are two subspecies of carbuncles distinguished by the size and growth of their gems: the horn gems and the oval gems. Horn Gem Carbuncles have gems that grow like a horn on their forehead and are directly ascended from a line of royalty. Oval Gem Carbuncles have normal oval-shaped gems and considered as 'common as all the others that are not Horn Gems'. Aside for aesthetic purposes, their gems also show the health status of the carbuncle: being bright red and sturdy if they are healthy and getting duller and easier to chip as they get sicker or grow older.

Personality: Varis is cheerful and has an optimistic outlook on life. He always greets others with a warm smile on his face and tries to cheer others up to the best of his abilities. He knows one cannot be happy all the time and he sometimes feels about whether he really is naturally happy himself or he's just putting up a happy face for the sake of others, like he can't stand feeling any other emotion but happiness. While his mother appreciates having such a bright and high-spirited son, she still often warns him about the danger of having too much of anything, and his little sister always gets annoyed because of his toxic positivity. It's something that Varis is currently working on himself.

Aside from that, he is courteous and proper, always following the rules and sticking by them no matter what happens. He is thankful for every opportunity that comes his way and is always eager to learn about anything that piques his curiosity. Despite being a carbuncle, Varis likes to keep to himself and never put the spotlight on him, he prefers to work on the sidelines and put the spotlight on others instead. However, he is also much eager to prove himself of being capable on his own even to the detriment of his health or what others think of him.

Feeling betrayed that the love of her life chose his status over her, Winona fled under the cover of night while being pregnant with their baby. The prince didn't know about her pregnancy, and she had no intention of ever informing him either. She went as far away from the prince and his wretched family as she could until she finally arrived at Gloomminster and decided to start a new life there. She worked hard day and night to support herself and her baby son, giving him all the love his father couldn't, wouldn't, give. She eventually found another lover, a vulpine folk named Siegfried, and gave birth to a girl they named Amity. While Amity wasn't a carbuncle, Winona still loved her dearly just as much as Varis.

Growing up, Varis was taught that his father ran away because he couldn't take the responsibilities of raising a family and Winona made sure to make Varis know it was not his fault that his father left. This made the young carbuncle to develop a sense of stewardship not to prove he's better than anyone else, but to become a man that his mother could also rely on apart from Markus. The two began to have a good-heartened 'battle of manliness' between the two of them as they would always compete for Winona's attention by helping her with household chores and with her at-home work, much to the disgust of Amity who hated lovey, sappy stuff as she entered the 'emo phase' of her childhood.

Even though they were poor, Varis was very thankful he grew up in a warm household. He often got teased a lot in school for being a carbuncle and automatically assumed he was just as haughty as the rest of his kin, that he should call on his personal maids and butlers to shine his forehead. The constant bullying was where Varis's eager to prove himself came from along with his strong positivity to show he's unaffected by their words and he's stronger than what anyone thought of him, something that he carried within himself as he grew older. It's also where he started to become a bit ashamed of being a carbuncle.

Varis applied to Gloomminster University so he could better help his family after he graduated and they were all very happy once he got in. However, because of how far their house was from the university, Varis would often spend hours just to get home, longer if there was a trouble with the weather and a couple of road accidents. Winona and Markus spent days convincing Varis until finally the young carbuncle relented to their parents' wishes and found a cheap place to stay at so he could focus more on studying and himself.

History: "Princess" Oluwa, like all of her Mami Wata siblings, is a child of the orisha Yemoja. But in additon to that, the orisha Olokun (in their male body) was her father. With divine parentage on both sides, she is elevated among her siblings. Princess is not an actual title, merely a nickname.

Her siblings are spread throughout the world; not only all over Africa, but South America, Latin America, the Carribean Islands, and the United States. Oluwa herself is from Nigeria. She was invited to come to Gloomminster by Professor Jacob Adebayo, a vampire scholar with various degrees of study and countless publications under his name. Professor Adebayo's obsession of the century is divination techniques, and while crystal balls, tarot cards, and runes have all been covered, so many more techniques remain.

Her parents, as well as her divine aunties and uncles, were quite wary of the invitation from overseas. Their memories are as ancient as the planet, and the British Empire's list of crimes is nearly as long. Still, Oluwa argued for the hope of making new connections to the modern magical world. After some argument, her family extended their blessings, and she left for England. She currently works as a research assistant in Gloomminster under Professor Adebayo's tutelage.

Dianna remembers that time very well, as it was a time of violent hunting of anyone suspected of practing "Dark Arts," where anyone with some magical prowess and the right mindset was encouraged to rise up and root out magic deemed evil. During this time, Dianna grew up as one of the few necromancers, and later in life lived in secret with another woman and child, both of which she loved with all her heart. Their son had the potential to be a great necromancer himself, and so his parents taught him well. They lived in a quiet village set at the edge of a forest, where they would spend days in solitude practicing magic together. It was a simple life with a simple family, in a simple part of the world. Simple was more than Dianna could ask for at the time.

But it wouldn't last forever. One day, a large group of armed fighters called the Sentinels stopped at their village and stayed for a week. The Sentinels were the biggest anti-necromancy force at the time, operating independently of borders or the rule of nations. Wherever they suspected "evil" magic was being practiced, they'd go there whether they were allowed or not. They were only stopping to do patrols of an otherwise unwatched part of the world, but on the second day, the soldiers began searching homes at random, without the permission of anyone in town. The people naturally resisted, but the ones who put up a fight were punished for it. When they broke down Dianna's door, they weren't expecting to be met with a high level familiar standing guard. She and her wife told the two Sentinels to turn around and leave, but the presence of wizards only made them search more thoroughly.

The soldiers found their son reading a book about different types of ghosts, and they didn't even confiscate it before they reached for their weapons. Dianna's wife incinerated them both on the spot. Others came looking, and despite her insistence that she killed them because they tried to harm her son, the entire force came down on the family. Roughly 40 armored battlemages swarmed their house, and they conjured every spirit, revenant, and familiar they could reach to protect them. It wasn't enough, even when their son joined in. Their home was burned down, along with half of the village. Dianna and her son managed to escape, but her wife was trapped and didn't survive. The two of them ran for days, weeks, and months. The Sentinels would not stop until they had exterminated the monsters who practiced evil magic. In her desperation, Dianna made pacts with entities from beyond the physical world, who gave her gifts no mortal person should have. She bound them to her service through unspeakable means, using her understanding of familiars and manipulation of the dead to add extraplanar beings to her list of bodies to throw at people.

Two months passed, and her son turned 18. They thought had finally escaped the Sentinels, but more showed up. The two of them retreated to a city that had regularly denied Sentinels entry. But news of Dianna and her son had reached the high ranks of the Sentinels, and they sent enough soldiers to the city of Mullhend to stage a war. 1000 soldiers swept the streets looking for the two of them, and they were found soon after. Every single Sentinel descended upon the street, and Dianna's son was the first to go. They ran him through with a sword, and burned his body to ash for good measure. The next few hours were nothing but a hazy rage, as a veritable army of undead, demons and other aberrant beings chewed the soldiers apart. Every Sentinel that fell was added to the tide that Dianna set loose. Every necromancer is taught from a young age to always exercise an iron will over their thralls, to never let them so much as think the smallest thought without permission. But the loss of her son and wife broke something inside her. She didn't want control, she wanted annihilation. Her subjects were given free reign to wipe these soldiers from the face of the planet for all she cared.

In the end, every Sentinel was killed and claimed by Dianna, but the chaos killed many other innocent people. The city witnessed horrible things that day, but time eventually moved on. Gradually, the world began to feel less scared of Necromancy, but no one in the world today remembers what happened when the so-called moral saviors of a bygone age sent an army to kill two innocent people. History simply forgot. Today, no one is entirely sure where Professor Bishop comes from, or why someone like her chooses to teach something other than necromancy at a magic university, let along teach anything at all with her demeanor. Some people believe she likes having authority over people, others think she does it solely for the paycheck or the job benefits. What they don't know is that Dianna takes genuine pride in what she does. Educating a younger generation reminds her of her son. She loved to watch him learn what she taught him, and it helps her remember a better time in her life. A time before she was a bitter, vindictive murderer with an army of ghostly soldiers under her thumb.

But the loss of her son and wife broke something inside her. She didn't want control, she wanted annihilation. Her subjects were given free reign to wipe these soldiers from the face of the planet for all she cared.

In the end, every Sentinel was killed and claimed by Dianna, but the chaos killed many other innocent people. The city witnessed horrible things that day, but time eventually moved on. Gradually, the world began to feel less scared of Necromancy, but no one in the world today remembers what happened when the so-called moral saviors of a bygone age sent an army to kill two innocent people. History simply forgot. Today, no one is entirely sure where Professor Bishop comes from, or why someone like her chooses to teach something other than necromancy at a magic university, let along teach anything at all with her demeanor. Some people believe she likes having authority over people, others think she does it solely for the paycheck or the job benefits. What they don't know is that Dianna takes genuine pride in what she does. Educating a younger generation reminds her of her son. She loved to watch him learn what she taught him, and it helps her remember a better time in her life. A time before she was a bitter, vindictive murderer with an army of ghostly soldiers under her thumb.

Looks great! Like the fact that thought her necromancy is no longer forbidden, her devilish deals are. Really like it. Mind adding in what exactly she teaches? Other than that no worries B)

History: "Princess" Oluwa, like all of her Mami Wata siblings, is a child of the orisha Yemoja. But in additon to that, the orisha Olokun (in their male body) was her father. With divine parentage on both sides, she is elevated among her siblings. Princess is not an actual title, merely a nickname.

Her siblings are spread throughout the world; not only all over Africa, but South America, Latin America, the Carribean Islands, and the United States. Oluwa herself is from Nigeria. She was invited to come to Gloomminster by Professor Jacob Adebayo, a vampire scholar with various degrees of study and countless publications under his name. Professor Adebayo's obsession of the century is divination techniques, and while crystal balls, tarot cards, and runes have all been covered, so many more techniques remain.

Her parents, as well as her divine aunties and uncles, were quite wary of the invitation from overseas. Their memories are as ancient as the planet, and the British Empire's list of crimes is nearly as long. Still, Oluwa argued for the hope of making new connections to the modern magical world. After some argument, her family extended their blessings, and she left for England. She currently works as a research assistant in Gloomminster under Professor Adebayo's tutelage.

I had my birthday and a job interview on Wednesday. On the way to the interview, I encountered a major 4 way intersection with all lights down (cops, construction crews, the whole 9). Found the interview street but some stupid ******* was blocking the road in such a way that I had to reverse my car on a turn to get back on the street. Got around *that* and before I parked... my car starts thudding. Flat tire.

...a problem for the Dizzy that exists after the interview.

So by this point I am about 15 minutes late. Have hit so many stressors that I have topped the meter... and swumg all the way around to not giving a shit.

I walk into the interview with the calm aura of someone who's accepted that despite all efforts to the contrary, we are not always in control.

I walk out with an offer.
