“Yeah. A cheeseburger. Fries. The whole deal.” CJ spoke nonchalantly as the bar staff took her order, being sure to tell them everything. “Get me a whiskey, too. Maker’s Mark. I don’t like Jack Daniels.”

The bar staff pauses as soon as CJ says the word, the blonde’s forearms pressed against the bar counter as she leans in on the top of her toes. She follows the staffer’s eyes and sees what caused the reaction. She smirks. She knows what she is doing–of course she noticed that Jack had finally slumped into the bar after her initial comment in the parking lot. While the comment was intentionally directed it was also true. She didn’t really like Jack Daniels. Even Evan Williams was better.

Truthfully, CJ is surprised Jack hasn’t tucked her tail between her legs and run like she always had. But maybe people do change! Unfortunately for her, the blonde wasn’t one of those people who had changed. Besides, it was way too easy and way too fun to mess with her.

“Hey,” she softly utters, as if getting the staffer’s attention back on her. She thumbs over her shoulder, in the direction of Hanna, “anyway. See the cute girl at that table? Tall as fuck? She’s picking up our tab.”

The order is written down and CJ looks back over toward Jack. She slides down the bar.

“Oh hey, Jackie. Didn’t see you there.” The bartender sets down her glass of Maker’s Mark and CJ takes a drink of it. “How has Delton been. Since you decided to stay and all. Thought I’d ask.”

It seemed friendly enough. It probably would’ve been if not for the silent ‘was it worth it?’ tacked on.

Tie a noose around her neck and throw her in front of a fucking bullet train.

Everything CJ’s doing—the ridiculous dig that’s too stupid to be getting under Jack’s skin like this, her body language, Jackie—is just so… so fucking CJ. Jack has to fight to get another mouthful of her drink down around her throat closing in on itself. There’s about a third of the glass left, and only a very steady buzz settling in her head, but she knows if she downs the rest right now then this night isn’t ending in anything but a disaster.

After a brief moment, she scoots the drink out of her reach—half restraint, and half because Hanna is picking up people’s tabs and Jack almost breaks the glass with how tightly she grips it. Casey catches her eye from down the bar and pulls a ‘yikes’ face. She makes a mental note to threaten him later.

On the second Jackie of the night, Jack’s jaw clenches so hard she sees stars. She raps her fingers on the bartop and takes a breath, turning so she’s facing somewhere between CJ and the back of the bar.

“I hear the economy’s really been going up, so. Price of coffee’s gone down by ten whole cents. And that’s just in the last year.” She tries for another sip of her drink. It goes down well. “It was storming super bad earlier, though—what time did you get into town, exactly?” Jack jokes, but there’s no humor in her voice. She glances past CJ towards the table. A few people shuffle past the bar, venturing deeper inside to fill out the corners as P.J’s peak hours crawl closer. Just a couple hours of this and she can be on her way with a nice fire in her chest.

▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅

Hanna was right, it was painful obvious that Ivy still hadn’t found her footing just yet, but as the night went on she would be able to use that brain to pivot to a tune she could carry. Muscle memory you know? Drinks would loosen her tongue and inhibitions, especially with the decadent flex of rounds on Hanna, but it would slow her wits. Something, she needed about her if this reunion was going to go any other way but south. Unfortunately for Ivy it didn’t seem like it was heading anywhere else, with Anni chiming in. The way she made herself diminutive in the face of the other girls in her circle prodded memories awake from an earlier time with Hanna.

-Sometime during Ritman High-

“'Sup, babe, you wanna hear a lil' something-something?” Hanna could barely hold it together with a stupid grin on her face. The question was perhaps the most rhetorical statement that she had ever cared to utter. Before Ivy could even take a breath, let alone answer or react, Hanna fired up the firing range: “Anni got booted from the squad yesterday. I mean, it was apparently totally brutal how it went down, at least according to Madeleine Peterson -- you know, Natalie Miller's little dog on a leash. Anyway, so, Stephanie Adams and Jennifer Cooper straight up tell Anni--” Hanna took a step closer to Ivy and lowered her voice a bit. “--that she's this total loser freak and they'd never let her on even if she was prettier than Natalie, or something like that, at least. And then, someone, like, throws something at Anni, a ball or something.” Hanna sort of chuckled and cringed at the same time. The scenario sounded hilarious, but she felt sorry for Anni. “I mean, holy shit, I didn't realize it was that bad with Anni -- I mean, is it? Do you talk with her at all?” Hanna asked.

Ivy took one last look over in the mirror, attached to her locker before closing it. She immediately jumped in her skin to see a wide grinned Hanna, “Jesus Hanna!” That devious face could have only meant one thing, which almost always meant she had the latest pound of gossip at 7:15 am, it was almost inhuman. Before she could even say, “Even if I say no you’re gonna tell me anyways”, Hanna went straight into it. It took a second for her brain to start up and contend with the speed of Hanna’s tongue. Ivy would have been lying if she hadn’t grown to live for the gossip despite doing her best to discourage the source of it through her actions. Ivy was saddened for Anni, disappointed in the girls involved, and revolted that words so harmful could be said let alone tack on with a ball to the face. Ivy pressed her back to the locker, hugging her books as she looked up and sighed in defeat. Hanna’s chuckle was the only thing that made her feel better. “Honestly, not as much as I should. I mean look at me honey, drowning in everything I had planned, have planned, and have yet to plan. And this administration does nothing in the way to help” her eyes darted to the side to meets Hanna’s gaze. In that moment she had a brilliant idea with the same expression Hanna had given her, “I didn’t realize it was that bad, but why don’t I hold an anti-bullying seminar/campaign? And I can try to get closer to Anni that way? You could come, that is if you wanted to be caught dead being an ally.”

Hanna leaned in against the lockers, modestly sliding over next to Ivory, resting her head against the gal's shoulder and listening to the qualms signing from that soft voice. “Oh Ivy League, you are too pure and beautiful to have to worry about these things.” Hanna spun right up again but with a less hectic tone, more mellow in its speed. “But, of course, I'll help. Anything for you, babe, but I'm not sure if it'll work on these bitches that did this,” she continued and exited their little moment by the lockers, now standing in front of Ivy. “I mean, they really don't give a shit about anything, especially things like that. They just need to be beat-the-fuck-up, plain and simple, but nobody is going to do that.” Hanna shifted her position to Ivy's other side and leaned in against the lockers again, but with a hand's distance between them. “For the sake of doing, something, you should do the campaign AND talk to Anni privately, just to let her know that she has an ally that isn't just I WORK FOR THE GOVERNMENT AND I'M HERE TO HELP YOU,” Hanna blurted out and did tiny robot movements with her arms, chuckling at her own silliness in the process. “Anyway, I'm late for English. Cya latah, Poison.” Hanna said, playing on the name of the Batman villain 'Poison Ivy'.

Ivy was a bit disappointed in herself that she failed to follow up and keep ties with Anni, maybe then she would have been less lonely in HS. This is why she came back to Delton though, to make up for the mistakes from her younger days. Another ghost of her ghosting days appeared in the shape of Lucas, some one who could have contended to be as close to her as Hanna, but fell through the cracks. Not just him, but CJ and someone she never expected to see in Jack. Though their conversation seemed one sided at the bar with CJ all but physically torturing Jack. “Hey Jack, CJ, how are you two holding up?” The balancing act of social interactions as the host was going to make an acrobat of her yet.

It is a sly barb. CJ notices it, but she doesn’t take any mind over it.

She takes another drink, “At least you still have your sense of humor. Guess that’s what keeps you alive.”

As much as CJ wants to keep throwing residual snark back at Jack to see how she would continue to struggle, another voice hits the air–Ivory’s. CJ guesses that she’s either getting a drink herself or she wants to make sure CJ doesn’t chase Jack right out of the bar. And boy did CJ want to.

She asks how they were holding up.

A weird question. Ivory isn’t blind and neither Anni or Jack are subtle. It wasn’t 1:1 like how it was in high school, but it seemed CJ could still get people to react, sometimes even by just existing in a space. She did that in the scene in Portland, too. If anybody expected her to have changed, well, it wouldn’t take long to show them that she had gotten much much worse.

“Waiting for my food while Jack’s holding off on an anxiety attack.” CJ remarks, glibly, as she turns to look at Ivory if only for a minute with drink in hand. After slamming the rest of it, she turns back to look toward the bar staff as she slides her glass for a refill. “Unless you mean, like, in general.”

▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅

"Are you sure you can pay for all these people, miss?" The bartender fixing Hanna's drink asked as he presented it to her. He was most likely referring to CJ being a loose cannon, or Anni, or whoever starting to take advantage. “Yes, it's really no problem. Just start a tab on me -- Hanna Whittle.” She said and took a sip of the drink. It was a deliciously sweet taste of orange with just a hint of vodka. The bartender sort of froze in place for a second, taking a closer look at Hanna, as if she had turned to stone or become some hideous monster. “What's the matter?” She inquired, a bit stunned, worried that something was wrong with her credit card or, god forbid, that her makeup had been messed up by something. "HannaBanana?" The bartender smirked. It took the girl a second to realize what he was asking. She thought the guy offered to put bananas in the drink, or something. “Right, yeah.” She chuckled. "I thought that was you. I watch some of your streams, entertaining stuff." The bartender said while putting down Hanna's info for the tab. “Oh, thank you, that's so sweet of you to say.” Hanna smiled and took another sip. "First drink's on me," the bartender winked at the girl, and then moved his attention to other customers.

It was always quite something to randomly meet people that watched Hanna's streams or knew what she did for a living. Of course, it happened a lot more in NYC, which meant that anywhere else in the country naturally made a bigger impact. "Oh boy, look at me gushing over this random man in Delton," she thought to herself. Hanna's eyes lingered on the bartender for a few more seconds before interrupting herself. “Easy on the breadsticks, Lucas. You're gonna feel like shit later if you stuff yourself with those,” she chuckled as she said it. The line reminded her of that one relative in Home Alone that said 'Fuller, go easy on the Pepsi', or the kid would wet the bed. Not that Hanna thought Lucas was a child, but it was a funny coincidence to her nonetheless. “Sorry, I didn't mean it like that. What I meant was that those things always fuck me up whenever I have them. So, it's just amazing to me how anyone can eat them.” Her gibberish fired up again, mostly out of fear that she had said something insensitive, perhaps. “Anyway, perhaps you heard, just now, that I'll pay for everything here, so get something more, alright? Who the fuck knows what will happen while we're here, so we might as well let loose a little bit.” Hanna said to Lucas, holding on to that smile and friendly demeanor, while Ivory called CJ and Jack over to join the fun. "Holy shit, BANANA, you're fucking things up," her mind wandered along with the moderate chaos going on.

Hanna politely indicated to Lucas to excuse her while she nearly shouted across the bar to CJ, Jack, and all the lost souls wandering around: “Come on guys, get over here.” And then she did the thing with the hands that Scorpion from Mortal Combat does. “Get over here!” She said again, trying to put on a darker voice as well, with a stupid grin on her face. Her gaze sailed between those at the table, chucking to herself without end, nearly running out of air. Hanna would certainly appear drunk to any bypassing stranger, but she had barely had two sips of her drink so far. It was all just her way of being nervous, on edge, and slightly uncomfortable, as anyone would be at a High School reunion. She looked at Anni again while taking a third taste of her drink. “You okay there, Anni?” Hanna asked with a more mellow tone in regard to the comment the gal threw at CJ, just a few moments ago.

Okay? Did she look even the slightest bit okay? Christ, Hanna. For someone who dealt in gossip, it was as if you didn't know half of it. Of the history the two women had shared.

Though Anni would never admit it, the incident had been a driving factor for her need to fit in; to be somebody that wasn't so easily discarded without thought. Maybe it was too extreme of a rebound. An overreaction to her faith and trust being betrayed. Regardless, she had gotten it stuck in her head: if the people she cared about weren't going to give a shit about her anymore, then she needed a reason for people to give even a single fuck about ol' lonely Anni—a place where she felt she could belong to.

That said, we all know how it ended. It blew up in Anni's face, leading to four long years of torture and a resulting lifetime of misery. She tried to fight the tide—perhaps a little too hard—and paid the price for it.

"It's nothing." Anni replied to Hanna. "Just a backstabbing weasel thinking she's all that."

▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅

Wow, CJ, real funny. Jack can bet money staying away from blondie here helped to ‘keep her alive’. Even with what it cost her. Her golden ticket to getting out of Delton, washed away down the drain amongst streaked mascara and boxes of hair bleach.

How does Ivory think she’s holding up? Jack’s still as stonefaced as she ever was in Ritman, but she can feel the evident lines of a scowl tugging her eyebrows. She can’t turn her back on the conversation now Ivy’s stood right by her, so she tries her best to divert any murderous looks past her shoulder and hope they aren’t misinterpreted. She’s still trying to compute what’s happening on what is probably the worst night of her life, so she just sits back and lets CJ get her licks in.

‘Jack’s holding off on an anxiety attack.’

That pulls her back together somewhat. Anxiety isn’t a word anyone has ever associated with Jack, and they’re not about to start now. (CJ’s dropped the ‘Jackie’ and she doesn’t know whether to be relieved or pissed.) She grabs her own drink while CJ gulps down the last of her whiskey, catching Casey’s attention before he can even think about pretending to be busy with something else. The staff member refilling CJ’s glass side-eyes her and she shrugs before finishing her drink.

“Is it ‘holding up’ if you’re not really, like, holding onto anything?” Jack wonders aloud, facing neither of them while she keenly watches Casey mix her a fresh drink. He takes his sweet time walking down the bar, and when he places the card machine in front of her Jack waves him off. “Nah, you’re not extorting me anymore. Crazy lady somewhere over there—” she jabs a thumb in the direction of the Ritman table, “—opened a tab. Drinks on her.” Wordlessly, Casey glances between Jack and her company before he slides the drink over.

“Go easy,” he warns. Jack raises the glass and nods, turning back to Ivy. She quickly becomes acquainted with how the far left wall of P.J’s looks. Anything to stop her glancing at the shadow on her right.

“So, you ordering anything? Rush hour starts pretty—”

Sweet fucking jesus, was Hanna Whittle born with a megaphone in her throat? Jack all but hides her face in her drink, not willing to be associated with the e-girl bastardizing Mortal Kombat quotes in her general direction. The incident seems to dissipate as quickly as it began, and the hushed voices around the group steadily rise back to a normal volume.

“Well, you heard the lady.” Jack pushes away from the bar and gulps down some of her drink, wincing slightly. Fucking whiskey. She’s gonna kill Casey for this one. “See you over there.” It should be directed to the both of them, but Ivy’s the only one Jack even glances at before she navigates through the crowd waiting at the bar and plants herself in the first empty seat she can find at the table.

Lucas is sat with his order from earlier—breadsticks, apparently—and Hanna’s surprisingly quiet for now, so Jack assumes she just missed a torrent of word vomit. The surprisingly bitching red leather jacket she noticed earlier now has a face attached, and it’s admittedly a surprise to find out that face is no other than Anni Simcox. Besides her, the table’s empty, and it seems like about the turnout Jack expected, so she doesn’t prepare for any more surprises tonight.

“Thanks for the drink, Hanna,” she raises her glass in a mock toast.

Ivy didn’t need to be psychic to know she was casually unraveling by the amount of social cues she was meeting with awkward pleasantries. Was anyone else hot in the bar or was it just her, because the sweat was pouring out of her pits. The drinks were doing nothing to keep her cool either. The look and lip given to her by the dynamic duo of CJ and Jack immediately made her regret her choice of words. “Not the best choice of words I know, you can see I’m not as good at this as I would have been in high-school” her head cocked in response, “I meant in general, how have you guys been since we were all here last? You don’t have to lie either I know life fucking sucks.”

Ivy was surprised she let herself slip, but maybe she would seem more human that way. “I’m not sure what it’s supposed to mean, I’m just coming off perfunctory at this point. I just know the air needed to be cut with all the tension here and I needed to runaway from those breadsticks”. Ivy went to motion her almost finished Tom Collins when Hanna rallied the herd and more or less did the hard work for her. Had Hanna not been there this would have been a disaster, more so than it already was. They all congregated to the tables and Ivy took Jack’s fake toast and made it real.

“Listen, I’m not good at speeches as much as I led you all on to believe. Let’s just have a toast to us and the magpies before the meteor wiped us out. A chapter we can hopefully have closure with.”

▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅

Hanna's demeanor took a slight turn from the typical, high-octane energy fest to something less hectic. The initial rush of all the impressions and roller coaster inside of herself had made it past the first, massive drop. Anni was obviously and disproportionally moved by CJ's presence. Even if Hanna had watered the grapevine more than once back at Ritman, she was not the fucking gardener. Every little needle-pricking thing that people did to each other was just impossible to be aware of at all times. Perhaps it did not matter, though, as it was not exactly rocket science. Hanna slowly reached a hand over toward Anni, tapping gently at the table in front of her to hopefully snap the girl out of her rut. Hanna had no idea how Anni was with physical touch, so this little gesture was the best alternative. “Hey-hey-hey, it's okay. We're here now, and it's not going to be like back at Ritman where nobody gives a shit. I'm here, I give a shit. Ivy is also here, and she certainly gives a shit. Speaking of, Ivy and I are going for a bit of shopping in Portland after this -- you should totally come with us if you want. Okay? So, just let it go, this thing. CJ will come around, eventually, and it'll be alright. And if it gets nasty, I'll go berserk on her ass, alright?” Hanna said in a moderate tone, lowering her voice as Jack approached the table. "Wow, I either made it 100 times worse or better for her. I really hope it's the latter," her mind lingered before turning attention to Jack.

“You're very welcome, JD.” Hanna refired with a glistening smile. “You seem to be yourself, still. I mean, we haven't been gone all that long from this place, right? Fuck, I can barely remember graduation day -- what did we do? There was a ceremony, something-something, and then it's just BLANK,” Hanna chuckled while sweeping a plam before her face as she said 'blank'. “You look great, by the way. I wish I'd gone for something more appropriate for, well, whatever tonight turns out to be.” Hanna contemplated and quickly eyed herself from the neck down where she sat. The white top, sort of casual yet still made by some obscure NYC designer, certainly accentuated her tits and made her show a lot of skin, but it did not do much else in terms of comfort. And, the ultra-tight denim jeans glued to her legs almost made her a cripple. “Oh, here we go,” Hanna interrupted herself as Ivy took to making a proper toast for the dysfunctional team at hand. Hanna let out a modest cheering pop from her ever-so-powerful lungs, cutting into the sound bed of the place yet again, and then took another sip of her Screwdriver. “Fuck yeah, babe. Not good, but the BEST -- that's what you are. So, what do we do now, captain? We were supposed to do something, right? I forget, like I forget everything,” Hanna chuckled and forced herself to shut up, taking another sip. The alcohol was really starting to set in -- that warm, fuzzy feeling starting to spread. "Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up -- holy shit," she thought.

Hanna was apparently a streamer, according to one of the bartenders who totally didn't just wink at her. And it seemed to be quite successful for her. Good for her. Lucas told himself, genuinely happy for her, while eating yet another breadstick. He made sure to chuckle lightly at her warning, taking no actual offense to it. Even if he didn't quite understand the reference itself. Then, before having a chance to respond to her apology, Hanna excused herself from the table to deal with whatever was transpiring between CJ and Jack at the bar. But that wasn't his business to interfere with, leaving it up to other folks to handle that messy shit. Hanna was doing a better job than he would've ever done in that department.

By the time the tray of breadsticks was emptied, Lucas saw that seemingly everyone was returning to the table. And when it came time to toast, he made sure to join it with his drink before taking a sip. Despite already being tipsy, Hanna brought up a good point to the "captain"; what were they doing back in Delton? Lucas would've been very dissatisfied if the only purpose of the reunion was to hang out and have drinks at P.J's. It wasn't like the email included a detailed schedule for the entire weekend. So it wouldn't hurt to ask whether he had wasted his time and money or not. Though he wasn't going to be rude about it. "I'm also curious if there are plans in store besides having a toast at the bar during rush hour."

Anni didn't react as Hanna tapped her shoulder. The pleasantries, the nicey nice talk. She hated it. It all felt fake, like she was being lured into the hunter's trap. Anni wanted to push Hanna away, just like all the other times before. To tell her to mind her own business. But fuck—she did have a point, even if Anni wasn't ready to come to terms with it.

Getting back at everyone was her whole reason to be here, although the second CJ had arrived she had gotten so flustered that her original plans had flown out the window. The woman's mere presence had awoken some deep, unresolved issues that had been eating away at Anni since forever. Letting go of it all was a daunting, practically impossible task. This wasn't "123, abc, poof, all your problems are gone" easy, Hanna.

Yet maybe, just maybe, it was something to try. To close that chapter in her book before she reached the point of no return. Anni had already been teetering on the edge, after all. She was becoming the very thing she had set out to destroy.

She took a deep breath before responding.

"I... I actually wouldn't mind that." Anni replied, taking a sip of her drink. "Thanks, Hanna."

God damn it. Here she was, getting all "feelsy" over someone. Hanna was just trying to reach out, yet admittedly it stung Anni deep. This wasn't natural. There was no way she could get used to this. It felt like severe whiplash just accepting the fact that someone was there for her. No hidden motives, just the honest truth that they had her back.

Fuck, had Hanna been trying to do this the whole time? All those "nosy" conversations at the games. God, Anni, you're an idiot for not realizing it sooner. Someone actually cared, and you didn't even notice.

Taking a second to refocus herself, Anni looked around the bar. First to Hanna and Lucas, and then to the crowd that had formed around the counter. A toast had been kickstarted by some of them, although Ivory's idea of "finding closure" stuck out like a sore thumb to Anni. She couldn't quite shake it out of her head, not after Hanna's speech.

"Fuck it," Anni announced, fighting back the nagging feeling in her gut. She wanted to throw up, but she nonetheless raised her glass to the toast. "Not like Ritman even exists anymore. Let's get this over with."

How had life treated her?

Pretty well, all things considered. She’s sure others had done better, even amongst those of them that showed up for this whole short notice reunion thing. Reunions were usually split up in ten year gaps, allowing for greater success or greater failure to be experienced in a person’s life. Not that CJ cared. She noticed, but she didn’t care. Things were getting torn down–the town was changing, so someone probably thought it was the best idea to spring it on people that a lowkey mid-way reunion was in the books. Part of her wants to talk about her life. How things were going upward. But really, she doesn’t want to hear how well Ivory or anybody’s lives had been. She doesn’t get the chance either.

Before she can utter a one-note response Jack starts talking. Hanna screams again. Ivory uses big words and everyone heads back to the table. CJ takes her food and another drink, sighs, and follows suit.

Lucas mentions that they aren’t sure if the shitty reunion is supposed to be just a night of drinking. Hanna mentions she forgot about something. Then there’s a toast and everyone starts raising their glasses like it's a big old movie, she would’ve laughed but she has a mouthful of burger. She mockingly raises her glass as she swallows her food.

Her little speech sent a shiver down her spine and sent her skin into tiny bumps. For once she started to feel a bit more comfortable in her skin today. Her crutch being Hanna surely helped her find her confidence too. A small smile crept it’s way onto her face, while the questions began to pile up on what to do and how they would deal with rush hour. “Thank you Hanna and again thank you to everyone who showed up, I know it wasn’t easy” her gaze catching Anni’s, “That’s right it doesn’t exist anymore, thank you for pointing that out.” Another sip of her drink to pace the night. “To answer Hanna and Lucas I was thinking as kind of a night cap or the focal point of our reunion was to pry open the time capsule from our year!” Ivy had paused for dramatic applause, but knowing the crew before her it would just be a squeal from Hanna marveling at the idea and the rest of the room filled with petty groans.

Either way she pressed on, “I’ve saved us all the torment of having to dig it up really. Besides, the construction company basically said I can take it or they can chuck it in favor of a new turf field with the new mascot and everything on it” a short sigh, “It’s in my car for whenever we decided to pop the proverbial bottle. If everyone’s fine with it we can do it on the field, but let’s just wait till this place fills up a bit more before we head out?” In her head she was about to suggest what would have been an opportune icebreaker for the evening initially, “So! Does anyone remember what they put in the capsule? Or maybe you can guess who put what inside?”

Ivy turned to CJ at the bar and raised her glass once more, only to notice she had followed suite and was right beside her. “Oh! You move fast, I didn’t even hear you or the burger coming. Glad you could join us” she turned back to the circle the crowd was now in, “I think Hanna left her burn book in there personally. Isn’t that right honey?”

▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅

Hanna would lie if she denied getting a tiny rush of feel-good after Anni's acknowledgment. A genuine smirk forced itself onto the corner of Hanna's lips along with a modest wink thrown in Anni's direction -- an 'anytime, honey' kind of indication. And then, there was Ivy's toast with a bunch of questions crammed into it by herself and Lucas. CJ had returned along with half the food on the menu, which, incidentally, was exactly what Hanna hoped that all of them would do. However, Hanna did devote some of her attention to how things played out between CJ and Anni -- just in case.

The time capsule idea that Ivy had was terrific. Hanna gently bobbed up and down in her seat, rapidly but softly clapping her hands, and grinning like a dummy in excitement, letting out one of those snoring sounds as she laughed softly. “Oh, shit.” She quickly covered her mouth with both hands, eyes squinting in silent laughter at herself. Although, she recovered most ricky-tick so as to not interrupt Ivy.

Hanna's mind wandered back to that day with the time capsule. "What did I actually put in there? Fuck, I can't remember. This is what you get for being such a sperg all the time, BANANA." She thought. Hanna snapped back to reality when Ivy slapped her in the face with the Burn Book. That thing had been such a scourge back at Ritman that it was this never-ending meme in and of itself. They still do not know who actually created it in the first place, but it certainly came out of Natalie Miller's corner of the world, and the plastics. Hanna had helped Ivy to tackle that thing multiple times because it definitely caused several incidents between students and even teachers -- what a fucking nightmare. “You're such a skank, babe. Completely reckless and out of control--” Hanna retorted with a devious smirk on her lips, describing the beaut as the polar opposite of her personality traits, as a tease. “--I don't remember what I put in there, so it'll be a nice surprise for everyone,” she said, straightening her spine where she sat, taking another sip of her drink, keeping eye contact with Ivy, being generally sassy.

It was difficult to tell if Hanna was coming down from the adrenaline-induced nervosity of the reunion or if it was just the alcohol. Either way, she was swiftly becoming more loose by the second. Hanna eyed CJ's burger and instantly fell hungry. "Fuuuuck, I need something real quick," her stomach thought for her. Even the possibility of hanving breadsticks was good enough at this point. With her eyes, Hanna momentarily sought the attention of a server that could possibly accommodate her needs at this time. When one of them seemingly caught Hanna's starved look, they readied some tiny machine with a touch-screen and began to walk over to the Ritman Reunion table. All of this happened in a few fleeting seconds. Hanna's attention returned to the ragtag group by her side without much notice of having been gone.

Jack hadn’t expected her little toast to turn into one of those feel-good movie moments, but she won’t complain for now. There’s enough people around to diffuse Ivy and Hanna’s aura of good deeds between the group, so she won’t become too suffocated by it. Hanna’s compliment on her attire for the night is received with a slight nod of her head before she goes to sip her drink. She doesn’t need to tell people she wasn’t even dressing for the reunion.

Once conversation turns to the time capsule, Jack takes the opportunity to settle into the humdrum of P.J’s on a night with people she hasn’t seen in years. She never bothered with extracurricular stuff if she could help it, and especially not a time capsule. At the back of her mind, she’s interested in what everyone else locked away in there, but she’ll find out once they crack it open anyway.

The whiskey’s helping to keep her drinking pace steady. She guesses she doesn’t have much reason to kill Casey after all. It’s a good drink to get herself acclimated to her current situation—each burning sip of the whiskey notes mixed into the cocktail gets her used to the bitter taste she feels in her mouth every time she catches a glance of CJ.

A snort abruptly escapes Jack, her face dropping back to its neutral state not long after, and she readjusts in her seat. She doesn’t know how many songs have played since she got here, but there’s some real nice high tempo rock screaming over the swell of conversation right now.

“I totally would’ve tried to smuggle my stash into the capsule. Like, a next level Breakfast Club.”

The time capsule. Oh. Yeah, that was a thing. It had been one of several things Anni had blanked over the years. She had forgotten it even existed, though that was probably because she was always in the "heat of the moment" and focused on getting revenge on her former classmates. What did she even put in there, anyway?

"I probably wrote myself a letter. One of those dear future self things."

Confirmation would have to wait until later, but Anni was certain that was more than likely what she had placed within the capsule. She often found that it was easier to write out her feelings rather than talk them out, a trait that had carried over into current day with her novel writing. Books, unlike humans, couldn't talk back, after all. You could write out your anger and not be told it's "just a phase", or that your issues weren't valid. With words, they sat there and listened, letting you get your feelings off your chest.

"Or maybe not. Who knows. Just sounds like something I would've done back then."

▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅

What did she put in the Time Capsule? It was a question that CJ couldn’t quite find an answer to.

Everyone seemed to have different ideas. Anni talks about some letter, a lame letter that nobody would ever want to read. Hanna has no idea what she put in there, probably the one time in the history of the universe Hanna forgets something to talk about. Jack talks about her stash which causes CJ to nearly laugh between bites of her burger. As if the faculty would let a student put something like that into a project they were monitoring. The audacity. But then again, Jack was sneaky like that, if there was someone at Ritman who could pull something like that off she believes Jack could.

She washes down the burger with more whiskey. She can feel the burning. It feels good.

“None of it matters.” she remarks, apathetically about the capsule, “Bunch of garbage we stored away that nobody was gonna want to dig up.”

She thinks back as she snarks at the idea of the time capsule. She was here to torment Jack, not to hold hands in a circle and talk about the good old days. For CJ, she softly recalls an expensive watch she tossed in the capsule. More of a fuck you to the guy who owned it than anything else, but it was there.

“Why do you want to open it, anyway?”

Her eyes cut back to Ivory, clearly judging them for the decision.

“Ugh I know, totaaaal slut, I’m just the worst” Ivy retorted tilting her head up with her eyes rolling to the top. As much as she didn’t want to admit it, Hanna’s response to forgetting what she placed in the time capsule rang true for her too. She more or less racked her brain in those brief seconds to recall any sliver of information that would guide her back to high school. Her appearance remained ever the stoic figure. Perhaps it would come to her once she got around the table, but Hanna’s gaze remained transfixed and locked on holding eye contact with her. Ivy’s skin began to feel hot, did she know? Of course, she knew, they practically lived together at one point and that doesn’t just go away with age. Just stop looking at her she thought or would breaking contact just incriminate her more? Her inner dialogue was screaming all the way up to her eyes.

Jack finally chimed in giving her an escape and pivot she needed, “Always the rebel, does that make me the brain and Hanna, Molly Ringwald? Probably better off not picking the basket case here. I’m sure the contraband you snuck in there is still good to use when we crack it open” another sip from her drink left the watered down taste of ice mixed with a hint of gin. Her eyebrows cocked up hearing the cute token Anni left in the capsule. ”That’s great Anni, let’s hope past you was kind to future y—“ her reaction cut short to the sweet sentiment by the sour response of CJ.

“They were going to throw it out anyway. It does matter CJ, sometimes reminders aren’t always so painful. And you know what they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Did you not put anything in it?” Ivory raised her glass eyeing the waiter for a refill. ”I can’t have too many if I’m going to drive us over to the field to crack open this bad boy.”

▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅

“Yeah. I did.”

CJ’s response is brief, but still apathetic.

She smirks as the memory comes back to her. That watch–it was Brian’s. God she hated Brian. Not as much as she hated Jeff or Eddie, but they were essentially part of some of the worst experiences she had in high school. Ivory’s remark that reminders weren’t always so painful echoes in her head, a surge of resentment curdles in her stomach almost instantly. What a privileged thing to say. The kind of thing someone who didn’t have to go through real pain said to you. Kind of thing you were supposed to smile and nod at.

She wanted to grab the back of her head and slam it into the table.

She didn’t. But she wanted to.

Her head turns casually to Lucas, trying to get the convo to end. She also has the opportunity to get that residual anger out through a snarky, informal comment.

“What about you, Lucas? Family Photo? Christian Cross? Lot of things you wanted to throw away, I’m sure you put something in.”

Ivy lingered for a second. It was long enough for Hanna to notice and snap out of her little act with a cheeky attitude. "Huh, what's the matter?" She thought, returning Ivy's musings before they were both interrupted by Jack. Whatever that was, it was certainly a footnote to keep track of going forward. The thought of having done something or said something to Ivy that had put a dent in their friendship since Ritman worried Hanna for a second. Or, maybe it was something else entirely.

Hanna chuckled at the Molly Ringwald comparison. She had never been to detention before, but that was probably not the point. Anni's thing sounded cute, though. Hanna sort of wished that is what she had put into the capsule. But, fearing the worst, she probably put something stupid in there like a pair of earrings, mascara, or some other shit that had sentimental value she had long forgotten about-- "CJ..." Hanna muttered underneath her breath, layering herself with Ivy's response, as a reaction to the 'nothing matters' comment.

As the waiter approached, Hanna discreetly snagged the menu at their table. She quickly skimmed through the sections to the burgers, which, as suspected, had a juicy cheeseburger with Hanna's name written all over it. The waiter took note of Ivy's request for a refill and put the order into the tablet thingy she was carrying. “Can I get number 24? And some fries with it?” Hanna said while the rest of the group kept going with the capsule conversation. The waiter nodded and put the order down. “Oh, also, everything at this table is for my tab -- Hanna Whittle, which includes the girl here that wanted a refill.” Hanna indicated to Ivy, which the waiter had already figured out. “Guys, get something while the waiter is here,” she casually continued, fleetingly, so as to not interrupt the flow of the conversation but still make herself heard. Hanna let go of the menu to the center of the table if there was someone else that wanted to look at it, listening to what CJ had to say.

“CJ!” Hanna exclaimed, somewhat chuckling but controlling her demeanor at the same time, eyes rapidly jumping back and forth between Lucas and the blonde. “You can't just, like, mention someone's religion like that -- what tha Faackh.” She let out another snort sound while cracking herself up with a sort of breath-mixed laughter, and chucking the rest of her drink. It was clearly the alcohol talking and completely missing the point of everything. This was Hanna's biggest problem when becoming tipsy -- everything became funny.
