The moment the challenge had been issued, it had begun.
Parameters analyzed, individuals acknowledged, calculations processed. All other witches present were shifted to the other side of the assembly in one instant, and in the next a green cube was formed around Erika and Mabaa.
Independent Cube, a separate dimension that rejected any interference that attempted to impose from one side of it to the other. In other words, now no other witches could interfere with if be harmed by the fight that was to ensue.
And then, mere moments after, a second green cube formed around Mabaa.
An isolation principle used as an ultimate defense. While the Independent Cube was up, none of Erika's spells would be capable of reaching her.
And yet, Erika was smiling all the while.
"Hey Mabaa, what's the difference between a broken sword and an unbroken one?"
Erika speaks up for a moment, before going quiet.
The answer is simple. A way of form, a distinction between how they "are".
Devil's Projection operates on the following principle: The projected existence must "no longer exist," or "no longer exist in the Form that is being projected."
The broken sword still exists, but its form has changed, so the unbroken form may be projected. Suppose then, the sword were scratched instead of broken, or reforged into the same shape, or that one atom of the sword was flaked off?
The form of the sword has changed, and thus its prior form can now be projected.
Heraclitus once said "No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man." Reality itself is in a constant state of flux, and so if something were to be projected, any distinction was sufficient. A sword changes over the course of a day, perhaps through oxidation, perhaps flaking off of metals at an atomic level, perhaps a scratch is placed upon it.
Say you hold a sword, and it has existed for a year as of today. Its form has changed time and time again, so as long as the information of what it was a year ago is recorded in your mind, there is no problem if you project the image of the sword from a year ago. From 364 days ago. From 363 days ago. From yesterday. If you have taken enough "snapshots" of the sword during its life, and you have sufficient energy to create the projections, you could theoretically project a thousand swords from one, each different from the other in only the most marginal of ways.
Now...apply this to humans.
Say Erika wanted to make a projection of herself. She exists, yes, but she has an Image in her mind from the Eye of Providence, the Erika of yesterday. Since yesterday, cells have been created and died, and so her form has changed. Thus, Erika could create a projection of "the Erika of yesterday."
But this raises another problem: energy consumption. To create something with the exact same power as herself would theoretically drain all of her energy, and so would seem to be foolish.
Unless there is a spell that bypasses that energy consumption, that bypasses the law of conservation of energy itself.
This is the power of Goshintai.
With regards to the Grand Witch, the Eye of Perception was utilized in addition to Laguz's Requiem, compounded backwards by three hundred years.
It has already been confirmed that Compounding can expand the effective range of Devil's Maze and Laguz's Requiem, and in fact had done so moments earlier.
-For the Eye of Perception had been used to take an "image" of Mabaa from three hundred years in the past.
An image of Mabaa with both her eyes.
An image of Mabaa whose form "no longer existed" in this world.
Against meisters and weapons, this tactic was usually subpar because they were always "evolving," and so the image of yesterday would be weaker than the image of today.
For Mabaa it was different, though. The Mabaa of three-hundred years ago was stronger than the Mabaa of today could ever be.
"Goshintai."
A flare of power echoed out from Erika, a flash of light forming inside the first Independent Cube.
-And when it faded, Mabaa stood in front of Erika, staring down Mabaa.
The Independent Cube shielding the current Mabaa was dispelled by a wave of the hand of the old. This was the power of the Grand Witch at her peak of power, a power that was now under Erika's thrall.
There was no time to be surprised, because the instant the Independent Cube was dispelled...
-Another had been formed inside the current Mabaa, slicing her body in two.
"To the victor goes the loser's magic, the loser's abilities, the loser's mind, body, and soul...As well as the title of Grand Witch, and leader of the Assembly."
The larger Independent Cube that the fight had taken place in was dispelled by its Caster's death, a pale green light flowing into Erika as she turned to the Assembly, her projected Mabaa beside her.
"Now then, with that nuisance taken care of, let's get to business. Judge, put together a militaristic force. I want an invasion of Death City ready by a week from today."
The tragedy had begun at long last.
