Grane has an accutely strong ability to sense magic. he could sense the strength of the Phoenix Wing mages during the Council arc from around two miles outside the Council's town borders. I'm willing to bet that Dawn and Nidhogg aren't more than a mile underground, though I'm openly going to admit I could be wrong.
