Dropping RPs or going AWOL and not posting anymore is part of life. GET OVER IT.

They will get over it; and probably remember you dropped a RP without substantial cause. I know its why some people are wary of me and that's fine. Point is, action creates reputation.

It's futile to try to FORCE people to do something over the Internet. Especially RPing/Creative Writing which is just a hobby.

I think people who get into RPing to "COMPLETE" an RP are foolish.
I also think people who put Interest Checks up with the expectation that their RP will FINISH (reach the end conclusion) are foolish.

The joy of RPing is in the actual act of RPing and progression of the RP -- that is to say, developing your creative writing skills. (This isn't the only RP site I've ever joined, even though my post count here is very low lol. You have a very high post count, so I'm assuming a good percentage of those posts were of you enjoying and entertaining yourself. In which case, Mission Accomplished, you achieved the primary goal of RPing.)

The sooner the "RP community" realizes that dropped RPs are a completely NATURAL AND EXPECTED RESULT of the Creative Writing Process, the sooner we can truly begin exploring our limits as writers.

RPs that END/Complete pretty much don't exist lol.
(And there's nothing wrong with that.)

Perhaps when one bail on RPs frequently, they never get to see any finish.

But I've finished many role plays. And when I say finished, I don't mean like "Come on guys, the RP is dead, let's whip up an ending!" I mean the RP came to a natural conclusion.

That's not to say I don't agree with your statement in some form though. It "is" futile to get everyone who joins an RP to post regularly. You're going to have people lose interest or Johnny RP seeds who bail as soon as things slow down. That's why I run my public RPs with an "anything can happen" mind set. My stories don't get slowed down when "important" players vanish for months at a time, or entirely.

Say what you will about the fun of writing incomplete stories, writing ones that actually conclude are not only fun, but give you an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment.

I see that someone doesn't realise RPs can have groups of dedicated writers who follow the story to its natural conclusion without bailing out.

EDIT: if you're gonna drop a lot of RPs, you can't just moan about how weary GMs are gonna be. Hell, a lot of my recent posts have been me dropping things before they even started, and I'm prepared to deal with the consequences of that. It's just about getting your head in the game and thinking "am I still gonna be interested in this RP later on down the line?".

The real reason is because you're a total scrublord.

RPs that END/Complete pretty much don't exist lol.

But, aside from Gowi's unrelenting scrubitude, I really disagree with this.

I have one RP that finished (and another one that's halfway through). It is possible to finish an RP if you're dedicated enough, and the GM knows what they're doing. The problem a lot of RPs run into is that they... just drone on for too late, or the GM has no endgoal because they think, surprise, "RPs always die!"

People leave RPs, that's a fact of life, yeah. But, if you weed out the people with attention spans and dedication of hamsters, you get the people who stick with you (provided you keep them interested).

Saying "RPs always die" is a narrow-minded assessment.

Just gonna scoot in here but a lot of the issue isn't the fact that said RPs don't get completed or are dropped. It's that people don't have the courtesy to shoot said former partners a quick "hey sorry, I've lost interest and don't think I can continue this, peace out!" (Or something to that effect)

Yes I am guilty of this myself but damn I at least make an effort to let people know when I get to the point of knowing I'm never gonna be able to write another post for a certain RP

As others have said it's also possible to get to satisfactory endpoints with RPs, I had one with a year-long or so run time that my 1×1 partner and I came to a mutual conclusion had run its course, so we wrapped it up and started a new one in a different time period within the same fandom

I got another one that's nearly on the year mark now where we've successfully completed one "act" to its conclusion and coming up onto the conclusion of the 2nd "act" as well, and still going strong looking at a start of a possible 3rd act after a short break

So it is perfectly possible to complete RPs or reach satisfactory endpoints, or to have long-running RPs, the key is for all players involved to have the right level of interest and dedication in both plot, setting and characters.

As a side note this is largely why I prefer 1x1(x1, at a stretch) to group RPs, because communication and keeping to that level of dedication is easier between only 1 or 2 people. I find that 98% of large group RPs I join 'die' or run their course within a few months because the hype dies down and everybody loses interest, and because the plot depended on a diverse group of people to run properly it's not humanly possible for the remaining 2 players who are still interested to keep the RP running and so the group fizzles out to go do other things etc. C;

Doing this is bad enough. Doing this and then flimsily trying to justify it, by deluding yourself into thinking it's everyone else's fault for getting mad at you when you quit seemingly for no reason, seems to require a special kind of shamelessness.

If you're going to have no loyalty to RP, and no respect for the people who set aside hours and days of their lifetimes to craft RP worlds and scenarios for you (you know, the people we call "GMs" around here), the least you could do is own this opinion, and accept your actions' consequences. Trying to convince us that you're somehow taking the moral high ground in the process of fucking us over is rather despicable.

Oh, I'm so glad that's not a common mindset.

I mean-- I think I see what you're getting at, Lugia. I know I have fun roleplaying even if everyone else in the RP leaves-- but I'm goin' on my 10th year of roleplaying and nothing you say is going to stop me from feeling aggravated when it happens.

But that's not even the worst part. Your main problem is this right here:

Of course it happens. Because, unfortunately, some people are unreliable and inconsiderate. And that's putting it nicely. A good GM will have a backup plan for losers ditching the RP, but to say it's part of the Creative Writing Process? To what process are you referring??

"I'm not inspired anymore"? Is that it? Lack of inspiration? You're feeling 'bored' with the story? Suddenly have an itch you have to scratch by making a new character for a different RP, so you ditch the one you're in? Who cares, right? As long as YOU'RE having fun, yeah?

You know, forcing yourself to write is important for "developing your creative writing skills." (Unlike starting a story and never finishing it-- yeah, I'm sure everyone will love to read your half finished story from 3 years ago. If the publishers don't love it, maybe your mom will?)

What are you looking to accomplish by filling in character sheets all the time as opposed to seeing that character through a story? Focusing on their development and writing them through numerous situations and relationships? I mean, I can't help but assume that anyone who jumps ship as soon as there's a lull in the story is getting much better as a writer. When I read a book, there are some parts I'm really into and some that make it easy to put down for a while. But I still finish the story. Great thing about roleplaying is you can actually do something about those boring times. There are options.

You can write out some of your character's backstory to help get the gears turning. Or even talk to the GM about your concerns! Roleplaying is a collaborative effort between player and GM. The GM isn't psychic either-- so politely talk to them if you have concerns or requests. Believe it or not, most GMs are interested in helping their players have fun so they'll stick with the story! Crazy concept, right?

Or...

We could just do what you suggest. Delude ourselves into thinking no RP we start will ever amass a loyal group of players and never put any effort into the worlds and stories we come up with ever again.

The only way for you not to feel the salt for being ditched...

Is to become the salt itself,
and have everyone to throw more salt at you.

On a serious note, there's no way you can continue on with life as if nothing happened when someone ditched you in any RP, especially not after you put in so much effort into the world and characters... only for an ass player/partner to throw everything you've been building up into the trash.

Don't you ever look down on a creator's pride. Unless you're one of those jerks who don't have one.

When that rare spark of inspiration and creativity leads you to pour your heart and soul into an idea only to watch it slowly crash and burn from inactivity...reminds me why I stopped writing rp's for so long...Being a GM can really suck sometimes. See you all in several months.
