Heidi payed close attention to Steve's mouth as he talked. She remembered every single mouth shape he made, fit sounds to them , and constructed the sentences in her mind. She had never lip read before, but it was fairly easy to do with her brain. She sucks air through her teeth and looks away when she shows concern. "Aye, my eardrums are ruptured, but I'll be ok." It was also taking effort and memory to speak normally now, though a new side effect of not hearing her own voice was that her Edinburgh accent had come back very strong. "I can read your lips too. Here's hoping I don't have to read lips for the rest of my life. Though, I must admit, for a person who was aware of everything all the time, this silence is...calming."
She starts to head into the shelter, but pauses on the last question. "Well, we split up. Last time I saw him, he was still in the city. I trust him to take care of himself, and if he ever tries looking for me, he'll check here first after the flat. I...hope he's okay..." As she walked into the base, her face was noticeably sad. Her brain was rocketing through possibilities and scenarios. What if he got hurt? What if he got hurt because she came here instead of went looking for him?
