I love the idea behind the shape shifting, so we should go with that :P
As for the pet thoughts, it's mostly in the stays by Kir-Kon, shares his food, gets pet, played, and talk to a lot, as well as being defended if/when the village kids try to tease him. Kir-Kon may care very little for the quality of his own life, but once the king is in it, he will not let the beast's life be a bad one as far as he can help it.
I can think of a few things, maybe, that would interest the king to stay for a bit. There's always the standard of food, and if Kir-Kon comes back out later in the day to see the beast he's likely to bring some. With as smart as the king already is he should be able to recognize that there's something very different about this meat, but since Kir-Kon is eating it, it's not poison. Maybe perk his curiosity? Maybe later on have them walking together and king can "observe" the pup paying attention to tracks and stuff using his own "feelers" to give him a sense that they maybe have some basic aspects in common. I think the main point, other than worrying over Kir-Kon's injuries, would be somewhere around feeding his curiosity, seeing something that lets him know that Kir-Kon is a thinking beast like himself and maybe when the king shows curiosity, Kir-Kon would start figuring that out too and begin deliberately teaching the beast when and what he can. Just a thought :P
I think, and this one is more in your court so it's only a thought, he would possibly shrink down a bit after getting comfortable with my guy.
If Kir-Kon comes out a second time and finds the beast again, he would start going out whenever he is free to see what else he can learn about the beast, and maybe the king could start looking forward to how different the pup is to the pups he's sired.
Kir-Kon has the gash on his leg, a few still healing wounds that no longer require bandaging, the bruise across his back from the fall, and a scrape on his hand from when he grabbed the edge of the loft for to save himself a neck breaking. And this is not to mention all the scarring. Nothing to big or disfiguring, but lotsa little ones. . .
Thoughts?
