Sue“No..,” Sue thought. She didn’t think anyone would come to her. She didn’t want to, it was far too dangerous. How was she going to explain to her that they weren’t supposed to talk to them? That drove most people away, and those that dared often left broken, in one case, literally.
But then he did sign. That relieved her of her first daunting task of social awkwardness, normally involved her flailing her arms at them to get them to quiet down and pressing her ears down. In this case, the boy introduced himself as Jack. What a nice name for a good-looking boy. It was not in her interest to keep anyone close, especially one so …nice.
“What is your name?” he asked.
“Sue,” she signed in return.
“You’re smart to not talk, thank you.” As a friendly gesture, she pursed her lips, index finger to her lips, indicating hush-hush, following a smile that lasted a moment…
…before she realized the predicament she was faced by her caretakers – who would most likely tell her to stay away from anyone.
Sue returned back to looking at the crowd, though she maintained her view of Jack. She hesitantly moved aside, giving space for Jack to sit - but with no intention to reply to him. At least not... until... she doesn't know.
