The doppelganger was bringing it around behind the shapeshifter, so it would attack the shapeshifter by default, simply because it is closer.

Would clubbing him over the head enough times work? That's how video games usually handle such things and I have no reason to believe that there is a situation where blunt objects are not the answer.

Yes and no. Yes that technically it could work, but frankly it'd take more blows to the head before he starts worrying about the brain trauma than it'd take words to convince him he's acting crazy. That's not to say it won't work, but it's not exactly an option you should mix together unless Tyrael is actively trying to kill you while you're talking to him. Which he will once you're done with the ridge hounds.

Guard npcs, though most everyone b is pretty busy at the moment. I suppose someone like Khan might be around or something. Perhaps your character stumbles into the meadows where the fighting is happening?

Lyn's Hunt is likely the best mission to get in on really. It's currently happening outside the college's walls and some where in the general area.
