Everyone was at the armory.

She did it. She showed Apophis her team. Her closest friends.

Her heart warmed.

Lauren and Amy seemed to be wearing... different clothes. It almost looked like they were wearing Ben's clothes.

Or maybe they were.

"Hel...lo," she began, though everyone had noticed her quiet voice even before she spoke up again. It was a surprise, but not an unpleasant one, nonetheless. She walked to her team.

Meanwhile, Apophis stared at the team.

The three who stood closely to each other seemed... surprisingly alright. There was something suspicious behind the excited dark-haired woman's jewel-like eyes, but that could have just been him overthinking things. Apophis was never one to judge people well because he mostly put himself in situations where judgement wasn't needed.

The redhead whose name wasn't Sangue Naga, on the other hand, seemed okay. The collar could say otherwise, but hell, who was he to jump into the realm of fashion? He wore a hoodie and jeans, the most bog-standard set that seemed everything but fitting on a freakishly disfigured guy. She could probably go to places with her relatively healthy face.

Now that he thought about it, he dressed up in what could have been the most formal he could have ever worn. Years had passed since he tossed aside the damned Alt-Trin uniform. Not that anybody would remember- or should be able to remember, anyway. He looked completely different back then.

Last but not least, there was the only guy amongst the three girls. He looked like... like...

Fuck you, Noxus.

This guy was only getting off the hook because he didn't have the blond hair and the bartender outfit. Far away from Beacon Academy, a certain bartender felt a chill run up his spine and sneezed like there was no tomorrow.

Another reason Apophis wasn't trying to bite the brown-haired guy's neck off was because Sangue described him like he was Superman or something. Apophis didn't find him to look too Super, but he could already tell just by looking at the guy's face that there wasn't much he could be hiding from others. He liked that- a slight tinge of honesty was always an alluring trait.

He could also tell why Sangue looked up to the guy. He already looked like someone who’d tolerate Sangue’s shit. Also, the shield he had with him wasn't half-bad, so that was a plus.

To some, Apophis' face could come off as creepy or disturbing. Sangue didn’t find him disgusting, but that was only because she stuck to him for several years. One would think that they would be able to see the insides of Apophis’ eye socket, yet there was nothing but an empty black color covering his empty eye. The corner of his right lip twitched every now and then, and he moved around in a sluggish, yet hasty manner. Almost like a zombie. He even smelled like nothing-

On a second thought, he smelled like a human being.

If there was one redeeming feature about his looks, it was his remaining eye. It had a very pretty shade of cyan that contrasted with his red hair, but who actually cared about the color of a stranger’s eye?

Just when he thought he could come up with something to run away and eat, the brown-haired guy just happened to point him out. He cringed, his frown opening a bit.

Fortunately for everyone, Sangue perked up and nodded. The snake was just happy that they got to meet Apophis, but truthfully, she didn’t have any plans outside of just showing Apep to her team.

So she turned to her team.

Her expression softer than its usual idle form, she glanced at Apophis before telling her friends,

“He…’s… Apep…

“He’s… nice…”

A brief silence snuck in-between her words as she glanced at Apophis again before turning to her team again.

“…and… strong…”

“…and nice-“

“You just said that.”

“O-…Oh…”

Turning to Apep, Sangue glanced at her team once before fixating her gaze on him.

“They’re… my friends…”

“Uh huh.”

“They’re… nice…”

“Uh huh.”

“…and-“

“-strong?”

“…Yes…”

Apophis took a deep breath.

These guys are godsend for dealing with Sangue's shit every day.

As Sangue absentmindedly walked over to stand with her friends, Apophis felt his lips twitch again, threatening to tear apart the stitched corners of his mouth. Usually he wouldn’t mind too much about it, but as much as he hated to admit it, he didn’t want to ruin Sangue’s first day seeing him at Beacon.

Like, yeah, he looked and even was an asshole, but he didn't see any gods forbidding Sangue from being happy.

“So,” he began, deciding to fill in the gaps Sangue missed because she only talked about how strong and nice he was, “I’m Apophis, but Sangue calls me ‘Apep.’ Don’t mind it too much.

“Sangue talks about you all as if this team is everything she has, and frankly, it is. So I respect all of you for that. It’d be… nice to have you introduce yourselves since Sangue would take forever in doing that.”

Although most of Apophis’ words were usually spoken out of spite or sarcasm to people he didn’t know of well, anyone could tell that he meant his words well. He also made sure not to talk like he normally did in front of Sangue’s teammates.

That stuff was reserved for Mark’s bar.

Skyra blushed heavily and turned away a little bit shyly. "Frick...", she exclaimed when Krys had vanished. This woman... this woman
really, totally knew how to press her buttons. Well... she kinda had to... as their team leader and all. The more time Skyra spend with Krys, the more she appreciated that it was Krys that was chosen for team leader and not herself. She would have just made everything worse.
Yeah, Krysanthe was the right person for this ragtag band of... well... people...

"Concentrate Skyra, concentrate. Why does this always happen..." She sighed and slapped her cheeks with both her hands at the same time twice, squishing them hard. Every time when she started to have some kind of mental distress, that included sadness, she felt herself growing closer to her female friends. It was annoying, but not entirely unpleasurable. But she had to remove herself from Krys' presence and focus on getting her mental barriers back up.

"Krys, I'm gonna go work out. Don't expect me to take part in the 'fun activities' of today!", she hollered into the bathroom where Krys was showering.

Wearing her gym shorts and top, Skyra jogged outside the dorm building and towards the gym when she noticed that the gym was... preoccupied by the race.
A little bit defeated, Skyra was almost about to head back to the dorm, when she heard something going on at the shooting range. Right! That would be a good site to work out at! There were no events scheduled to take place there, she remembered and... yes! Gren was supposed to have her new weapon ready by now, too.
With the scars on her stomach showing clearly, she entered the shooting range to see two familiar figures.
"Good day to you two!", she hollered towards Gren and her new cat-eared friend, Emerald.
"Gren! Is my weapon ready?" She smiled from, ear to ear. This day could actually get good!

You could tell a lot about someone if you trusted your gut. The way they held themselves, the way they moved, spoke, looked at you. Information was there if you knew how to read it. Gut instinct was usually just picking up on things you don't realize you're seeing. The man was sizing them up just as certainly as Ben was him, trying to draw the same conclusions.

And when he started speaking, Ben decided he was alright. Sangue trusted him, and he pretty clearly cared. That was enough to look past everything else.

“I'm Ben. Ben Lloyd.” The Redwood native left his shield where it was and took a small step forward, resting a hand lightly on Sangue’s shoulder. ”Don't know how much Sangue’s told you, but she's important to us. We're Team Bastille. Used to be Bastion. I'm the captain.”

“I'll let them say hello themselves, but these two,”
He gestured with his other hand to Lauren and Amy. “Are our other teammates.”

“Sangue was a huge help on our last mission. I don't know what your relationship to her is, but I hope you're proud. We are.”
Sangue’s shoulder got a light squeeze before he let go and crossed the space between him and Apophis in a few steps, giving the older man a friendly smile and holding out a hand to shake.

”It's good to meet you.”

Oswald Connoly and Diamond Frost- Beacon Halls

As Diamond pushed Oswald through the hallways, the two fell into a comfortable silence. He wasn't sure about his teammate, but Oswald certainly felt a bit of weight off his shoulders after talking about his unpleasant past. He didn't harbor much shame, but but the shame he did harbor had a dramatic effect on his behavior, his motivations, and his life in general.

He wasn't glad to be pushed around in a wheelchair, but he supposed there could be worse people to deal with in this position. Shiro, for example, or those guys who'd started a fight in Armory class on the first day of school.

Speaking of people Oswald didn't mind being around, actually, he'd just spotted one as Diamond wheeled him around a corner, and gave a quick wave in greeting before realizing that Sapphire was currently talking to somebody small. Her sister, perhaps? "Oh, hey there Sapphire!"

IC: Wisteria, ???

The face that stared back at her was older, the blonde hair surrounding her violet eyes not showing the streaks of grey she knew ran through it. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. Her hands were shaking, smearing the mascara she was trying--relatively unsuccessfully--to apply. A short, high pitched burst of noise came from her mouth as she hurled the bottle across the room, turning back to that same damn haggard reflection, inhaling deeply again, the shudders seeming to leave her as the following breath of air left. She rolled her shoulders, breathed, closed her eyes, breathed, refocused, breathed. Calm yourself. The mascara is not what you're angry about.

Her fingers clenched, unclenched, fell to the sink. She looked at the twin in the mirror again. It'd have to do--no way she would be able to look more presentable as long as she stayed in this state of mind. The light purple dress--colored like her namesake--flattered her well, but she supposed she deserved the holes in her facade after all this time. A carefully controlled smile twisted her mouth, perfect white teeth barely visible in the small grin. Then, the frown, not creasing her brow as she did, only the corners of her mouth slightly falling. A far steadier--but still trembling--hand wiped the smeared mascara away.

Satisfied, she turned from the mirror, took a deep breath, stepped through the door and snatched her purse off the bed. As good a time as any, Wis.

***

Her hand clutched her purse, the gentle wind of the cool Monday morning flapping her dress to one side and her other palm to press down on the top of her hat in hopes of it not blowing away. They made an odd couple, she and the man standing next to her, old enough to be her father but still here for family day. She pulled out a small folding mirror and looked in it, at her face and then at the man again. Definitely older. Probably a grandparent.

The head office was evidently where her unspeaking companion was bound for as well, though he followed her a few paces behind and seemed to be preoccupied with something. She'd tried speaking, once or twice, and he never responded, not during the entire walk to the office. Losing your touch, there, Wis.

Her hand clenched on her bag again as she stepped up to the receptionist. "Wisteria Desree. I'm... Trying to find my daughter."

"Sorry," the woman responded, after tapping at her scroll. "No students by the name of Desree. Want to try another last name?"

"Try 'Desire'," a sonorous voice said from behind her. She whirled around, the man from earlier smiling slightly as a nervous laugh burst out of her. "And... Who are you?"

He adjusted the platinum frames on his nose, an easy grin spreading across his face. "You'll have to forgive my rudeness. Arin Glint. A pleasure to meet the mother, Ms. Desree."

Gratia Mindaro - Beacon Cafeteria (Monday, Early Morning ~6-7am)

"If they want to, I will definitely accompany them."

There was an undercurrent of another emotion, slight and almost unnoticeable, in her cold, impassioned tone. The stoic Mistralese girl's expression remained unchanged, and her declaration seemed little different to her standard icy fare, but the more perceptive would notice that certain 'more' to her voice. In fact, her boreal demeanour even felt a little brighter, her haughty sense of pride bubbling somewhat to the surface.

She bit into the banana, chewing away at its flesh and swallowing. Each and every one of her actions were committed with the same efficient, cool motions, but there was the tiniest of extra vigour in the way she engaged her breakfast. Family Day, it seemed, was something that she was willing to engage in at more than merely a surface level.

"And what of yours?" Gratia asked after a few seconds, her banana complete and peel placed down onto her nearly-empty plate.

Luke Schwarz, Monday, Early O'Clock

...

Hold on.

Was I still half-dreaming?

I blinked a few times, even stopping to rub an eye with the bone of my wrist, but my vision was the same. No murkier or sharper. This was definitely reality that I had all the way immersed myself in, and no amount of self-delusion would take me out of that.

But that wasn't right.

That couldn't be right.

There wasn't any combat listed on the itinerary, but I could have sworn I was hearing a certain energy in Gratia Mindaro's voice. Just as a hint, but when you smell the same steak for years, if the chef switches from Thyme to Rosemary, you'll pick up on it.

Salty, meaty crunchiness coated my tongue as I mulled it over. Thankfully, my body has a decent bearing on what it needs and recognized how hungry I'd let myself get by making all that food.

By all means, I was slightly flabbergasted. I'd respected a reasonable chance of a response in the affirmative, but not the barest hint of an actual change in demeanor. This was... this was a historic moment.

So historic that I had nearly forgotten her question. Hints of dere under a mile of kuu aren't a reason to be an idiot, man!

"Ah, erm... Not really. As far as I can tell, anyway. The only one that might interest them is the wrestling tournament, but I think they sent me something about a report on weapons last night..."

Oh, hey. Call back.

"And to speak of weapons; would you mind if I picked your brain on that some time?"

Krysanthe yelled a sound of confirmation back at Skyra as she showered, finishing up relatively quickly as she wanted to be early. It was a shame Skyra didn't feel like playing in the events. She expected them to a be a lot of fun, but Skyra likely didn't enjoy parent day. Krysanthe was well aware that many students weren't as lucky as her to have two fully functioning parents that loved her, but much she could do about it. If Skyra wanted to do her own thing, then dragging her around wouldn't help matters. The warm water was shut off and Krysanthe dried off, spending a few moments on her hair before putting on a pair of shorts and a casual brightly colored t-shirt. Then she picked up her red scarf and was off to where the airships landed.

Lynn and Randolf stepped of the airship, scanning the crowd of people already here briefly. It wasn't hard to find their daughter, she stood rather tall in the crowd and though she was from from the only person brightly dressed, it didn't hurt. Lynn stood just a hair or two shorter than Randolf, her long yellow hair making the origin of Krysanthe's own obvious. She appeared to be around 35 but her youthful energy made it hard to tell. Lynn's green eyes locked onto her daughter and she quickly shot a hand into the air to wave with a cheery grin on her face, hurrying over.

Randolf stood dressed professional in a nice black button up shirt and equally nice pants, a contrast to Lynn's casual skirt and flowery blouse, and his brown hair slicked back looking dull besides his wife's brighter head of hair. He was smiling pleasantly but not as over-energetic as Lynn and simply raised a hand in greeting, deep blue eyes merry at seeing his daughter again. He looked to be around five years older then his wife, The family quickly reunited with a group hug. Lynn immediately began firing off questions, "So, how've you been? I want to hear everything, how are classes, you told us you're a team leader! Did you go on a mission yet? Did you meet any boys?"

The last question was somewhat suspicious but all of them were rapid fire and filled with excitement. Randolf laughed in response to his wife's antics, his voice soothingly deep. "Now now Lynn, give her a chance to breath, I'm sure she wants to tell us all about it."

Krysanthe let out a beaming smile at both her parents, "Of course I'll tell you everything, but we gotta head to the gym, I signed up for a race." They started making their way towards the gym, Krysanthe telling her parents about how being a team leader was going, how their first mission had gone, about classes and her teachers. Not about Ebon yet though, that could wait.

It didn't take long for her reminiscing to be interrupted by a burst of static and the announcement that the race was starting. "Oh that's my cue, I'm off, wish me luck!" she said and made her way to the starting line. No weapons and one semblance use, pretty simple. Well except for the one semblance use thing. Could she just keep it on? It was technically using it once becau- BANG - Krysanthe's body shot into motion as her mind was kick-started out of overthinking into action. Straight away, jump, rope, wall. Easy. A dead sprint to gather speed, keeping up with the best of them, and she hurled herself forward, grabbing one of the ropes and swinging forward, her body arching to pick up more speed.

As she let go of the rope her semblance kicked in, making her light enough to practically soar through the air, making a substantial way up the wall: even stylish flipping as she did so, hair and scarf flailing wildly and entirely skipping the slope by a good margin. Krysanthe had a devilish grin on her face, excited by the competition and the fairly high-speed maneuver. She scrambled up the climbing wall, her finger strength perhaps not the best, but making speedy progress none the less with her ability to leap up and skip a peg or two, making the harder sections easier. Soon she'd be at the top and racing off to the next section.

Teàrlag Cirsium, "Student Counselor" - Her Office

Family Day. As its name suggests, it's a day for family. To be more precise, it's a day for students to avoid all the nasty bizzo of schoolwork and responsibilities so that they can hang out with their folks and pretend that they aren't being trained up so they can be throw into the endless meat-grinder that is fighting all those monsters waiting outside our walls. And us teachers, the ones responsible for turning them into "defenders of humanity", don't get jack on this daft little day. Preparing all the events, handling the logistics ... that stuff's all on us poor buggers. I'm real bloody loused by it all, but at least I'm only the only Cirsium here today.

Hah, I'm not so opposed to the other gels popping over for a visit, but having them around would just be more of a drag. If I'm to be a cog in an unforgiving machine working singlemindedly for purpose of cheering up the brats here at Beacon, then I'd prefer it if I could do it with a minimum of effort. Not that I have a choice in that regard; none of the students have to care about a single thing, so they're free to laze about and spend time with their beloved (or possibly unbeloved) families.

It's probably for the better that they make the most of it.

Hunting's not a happy career. They might clart it up as some noble cause, lauding it as some grand and majestic thing where you can defend all of humanity from the neverending hordes of Grimm who think we're biscuits and gravy, but they never really tell you how much of a bloody chore it is. Just fighting against a foe that never stops and never gets tired until you just give up and retire or end up as the unlucky bugger who gets chomped on. Just watching your mates drop out one by one, trying harder and harder to convince yourself that there's some meaning to what you do beyond just a desperate fight for survival. It's no wonder so many hunters just go into the mercenary biz; the dosh from doing things besides hunting Grimm is a whole lot better.

Only the idealistic or glaikit idjits who commit themselves entirely to the job.

Guess I'm the latter.

It's not like I really care about the brats or anything, but there needs to be somebody willing to keep their mental and emotional stability all okay. I get paid to make sure that they're well-adjusted enough to fight the Grimm, that their chance of survival has a few more percentage points than usual. Even if there's no real meaning to it all, even if we're all just supposed to be fuds with no other purpose than to keep humanity going for a few more years, you'd want your fuds to be working at their best, right? I might not be able to do a good job, but something's better than nothing for these lads and lassies.

Giving them the chance to see their families ... that's one of the ways we can help them. No, it's just another way of avoiding the knowledge of their fates - our fates. Averting our eyes from the truth and lying with a smile so they can happily enjoy this holiday without needing to worry about the future. It's what children are allowed to do, to think that this superficial façade we've managed to put up over the world is reality, that the consequences aren't so close that they have to start thinking about it. Or they already know that's it all a lie and are taking this chance just to be happy.

I probably would've.

We always emphasise the truth. We always pursue the genuine reality. Yet we are constantly lying to ourselves, saying that everything's okay, that we've always been at war with Eastasia. Smiling as if this world we live in is in any way safe or just, as if we're not at risk of dying because of even the tiniest of mistakes. It's just an elaborate game of charades on a grand scale, and accepting it at face value is just much easier.

We're hypocrital buggers like that.

I used to wonder what the world would be like if we just embraced what was truly genuine, but that's just an impossible dream. It's because that we're all liars that all still alive. Even if we can no longer sustain that lie, if it keeps a smile on everyone's face, we can stay a few more steps away from eternal oblivion. It's just a fact of life in a world where we could draw in predators if we just screw up even once. No surprise that we can be so feart of digging past the surface.

Is struggling for the genuine worth it, if the risk could be death?

Is the truth of this unjust world something I need to force upon others?

Then again, it's not my job to force my own ideals on these brats. I'm not so daft to assume that's even part of my contract; and there's no saying that what I do is truly "correct". Humans love to believe that their own beliefs are the genuine article, and that anyone who disagrees is dunderheaded in some way. They selfishly cling to that which is theirs, shunning the ideals of others and giving them no quarter. It's a cynical thing to say, but at our very cores it's ourselves that matters the most. We place ourselves, our belongings, our ideas, all on a pedestal, and any challenge to that seems to be an assailment on who we are. Yet the world doesn't care at all. We're just collections of flesh and guts that'll end up as tomato splatter one day, faceless creations of some unfeeling gods.

If I ever ran into those two fellas, I'd probably give 'em a hard skelp, but I don't even know if they bloody exist.

My job, in the end, is help them stay true to themselves. Or something. Call me a sook all you want, but it's not like I really have a good grasp of what else besides "help them". I don't know what's alright or what isn't, but they deserve to be happy and alive. They deserve something genuine, something real, yet also doesn't make them cry. It doesn't make any bloody sense in the slightest, but that's all there is to it. I want to help those who can't help themselves.

... Not because I care or anything. That's just what was listed in my contract, and I get paid for simmering down these brats.

I rise with a light yawn from my desk, the one made from genuine West Mistralese oak that Éibhinn sent me as a birthday present a few years ago and now upon which rests stacks of essays written by students in need of correction, a well-articulated figure of renowned model Umeko Kawaguchi, and articles about the latest scooby on Dust research that the Atlesian Security Council so kindly deigned to reveal to us foreign fellas without a pet Faunus. It's a nice table, I gotta admit, but the supposed prestige of its material only comes off as a cynical cash grab. Us gullible neds are supposed to think that because it's West Mistralese, it's seemingly just better, and so demand a bigger portion of our wallets. There's supposed class to having something made outta that wood, when in the end there's no appreciable difference to oak from East Mistral. And unfortunately, dressing something up in prestige works, and our human desire takes over, seeking that which seems brighter and shinier. It's not like I don't appreciate the gift from my terrifyingly strange older sister, but she could've spent all that hard-earned dosh a little better.

I'll have to become another consumerist slave and take advantage of a sale to get her something back sometime.

Noise draws my attention to the window. Everyone out there seems so excited, so eager to meet up with their families. I guess I'm not really that dissimilar either, but today isn't for me. It's for these brats to loosen up a tad before thrown completely into the world of adults. A moment of happiness. Maybe some poet could compare it to their families watching them one last time before they leave the nest, but I don't bloody know Shakespeare from Heaney. It'll still do them some good, maybe.

I think I'll go check up on them. Make sure they haven't buggered themselves over.

Ben. That’s right, that’s right. The guy’s name was Ben. He kept forgetting it now and then, but at least it sounded familiar to him.

He remembered Sangue repeatedly saying his name. And now that he thought about it…

Yup. She said it so many times to the point where it sounded like Ben was responsible for one-thirds of the good things that happened to her in her school life (the other one-thirds respectively going to her other teammates), and somehow, Apophis fucking forgot his name.

I deserve every single thing I suffered for.

And the team used to be Bastion, but was now Bastille. People being weeded out due to circumstances wasn’t unheard of, but it still made Apophis wonder just what were the exact requirements needed to attend Beacon. Back in his day, all he did was cleave things with any object around him and it got him to places.

If anything, the news of Sangue being useful was more of a surprise in itself. Sure, he sparred with her so that she wouldn’t be steamrolled by common dangers around herself, but he never really thought of how useful it’d be. Considering that the only way Sangue could be useful was by cutting things down, it at least showed that she put the few skills she had in hand to decent use.

He didn’t give a shit about it, but it did admittedly give him a dose of nostalgia. Some people liked his strengths, and those were back when his life was simpler.

Maybe even similar to some of those attending the academy.

The hand extended to him and the smile that went with it, however, dispelled any emotional aura surrounding Apophis. It felt odd. He had to remember that it was a student wanting to shake his filthy, burnt hand. Before meeting Sangue, getting people to shake his hand was- without a doubt- him wanting to tear his target’s arm right off its socket. He realized how out of touch he was with society, and while he didn’t regret abandoning morality, it caught him off guard for a split moment.

At least he had some gloves on. He wouldn’t want Ben shaking a hand that looked like it came straight out of that one trapdoor nobody ever opened. It was clear that Apophis was very reluctant to do so, but he did end up accepting the handshake. And he shook back, almost with a lifeless strength.

A hollow smile entered the crooked man’s face, the stitches on the corners of his lips preventing the smile from widening too much.

“Yeah,” he said, his words forced to sound civilized. “You seem alright.”

Letting go of Ben’s hand first, Apophis wondered how he should explain what he exactly was to Sangue.

“I’m neither a parent nor a real guardian to Sangue,” he explained shortly. “I’m just… someone she gets along with. She’s nothing like me, and I guess that’s a good thing.”

The left corner of his lips twitched as he glanced between Sangue’s other teammates and Ben. If he recalled correctly, the dark-skinned one was… Maurice Benghazi. And the redhead with the collar was… Baby Nazario.

…But for some reason, I’m getting a gut feeling I’m dead wrong, so I’m just going to let them do the talking.

He knew he had to cut the alcohol and listen to Sangue while he was sober sometimes.

Apophis stood on the thin line between being hungry enough to just bust out the bread he brought and being curious enough to at least know more about them and confirm what their actual names were.

Sangue remained silent as Ben and Apep talked to each other. It was fine if nobody knew that she really wanted to have Apep meet her friends. But it happened, so she was happy for that much.

It was hard for her to call Apep a “friend” or a “guardian” because of how they interacted with each other, so she never really referred to him as anything aside from "Apep."

Apep was Apep.

As she stood still, she felt the warmth of Ben’s hand envelop around her shoulder. A few moments after he placed the hand on her shoulder, the snake slowly closed her eyes, enjoying the fuzzy sensation with her idle expression. Her eyes promptly opened after he let go, and she went on to walk and stand next to Amy without a word.

Firing Range

Emerald could barely contain her excitement, actually, she couldn't contain it. She was bouncing on her toes as she adjusted the prototype gauntlets, they were certainly a bit heavier than her old weapons, but with a little practice she figured she would adjust quickly to the new weight. She aimed the weapons to try them out, it was a little harder to keep them steady than she expected, though she hadn’t completely recovered from her injuries so she assumed that was the reason.

“Okay I’m ready!” She announced, giving Gren a smile and a thumbs up. She got into a battle stance, ready to open fire upon the targets, it would like watching fireworks at th-

Her scroll made a mewing sound, she lowered her weapons and engaged the safeties on her weapons as she looked at her scroll, she had a new message. “Ooooh it’s from Diamond, let’s see here…” It wasn’t a long message, something about going out and training. Emerald quickly sent a text back, saying she wasn’t sure if she’d have time because her parents would be arriving soon. Emerald’s eyes widened, “Oh that’s right, my parents could be here at any time now!” She needed to hurry up with the weapon testing.

“Alright I’m ready for real this time Gren! Here we-“ It was about then Skyra arrived and greeted them. “Oh hey Skyra! What’s up? I'm about to blow shit up with these new weapons!”

Then in an almost comical fashion, Emerald accidently fired a rocket from her right gauntlet, the rocket promptly coiled with one of the targets, causing a loud explosion. Emerald looked on in awe. "Explosions are so pretty~"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile in the not too distant head office of Beacon academy, two faunus parents have arrived, they look both lost and concerned as parents tend to be when looking for their kid in a school they aren’t familiar with, and as a bonus they seem to be talking amongst themselves and everyone can hear them clearly.

“Dear…maybe we should give her a call?” The female of the couple said softly, sort of like honey. Her appearance screamed cat ears and likes to wear dresses that match her green eyes. On top of that she had a basket with good smells coming from it. It was like watching a scene from Anne of Green Gables, minus the cat features.

“And miss the fun of surprising her? You know how she likes surprises Ivy.” The man said, he was armed and dressed in gear that screamed ‘huntsman’ any day of the year. He certainly had the look of one who had been in many skirmishes with Grimm out in the wilderness. He had red hair mixed with feathers that betrayed his Faunus heritage as well, his blue eyes looked into his wife’s green ones. “I know you’re worried about her, hell so am I, but we have to let her grow up a little, she’s not living at home anymore.”

Ivy looked down at the basket in her hands. “I know…but Andrew…she played off her injuries like they weren’t serious…we both saw the medical report…she almost died!” Her eyes watered a bit, if they hadn’t lived in such a remote location they would have come to beacon sooner. Her poor little girl…
Andrew put an arm around her shoulder to comfort her. “I know Ivy…I’ll have a talk with her about that. We both will.”

Violet Steel – The Emerald Forest –
A mysterious camp site with mysterious people

Violet looked through her spyglass from the tree branch she was perched upon. There was no sign of Grimm yet, just the endless forest of trees and the animals that dwelled in it. She was honestly surprised, she really thought by now they would hav-

The sound of screaming deer as it was torched to death by the biggest pyromaniac in all of Remnant ruined her train of thought. His name was Igni Alev, he has big, bald, and ugly. But he also wore a gas mask so who could really judge his face? The important part was he wielded a terrifying monstrosity of a weapon that breathed fire like a dragon. So yeah, a flamethrower.

"So, who wants dinner?" Came his deep voice, masked by the mask he wore as he breathed heavily. The deer was still screaming, but it had collapsed on the ground as it burned.

"You fucking dumbass!" A female voice hissed, though it was not Violet's. "You're supposed to let me kill it first BEFORE YOU START COOKING!" Her chocolate colored rabbit ears twitched irritably as she threw her little hissy fit, swinging her grenade launcher around as she did carelessly, it was a wonder she hadn't blown herself up yet. But that was Chocolate Newling for you, a tad unhinged. The deer had thankfully stopped screaming, though it looked a little overdone.

"You two need to cool it, we'll be overrun with Grimm in no time with all the noise you're making." The silver haired lizard faunus spoke calmly, but with a sense of superiority. "It's a miracle you crack heads are even alive, your stupidity should have killed you off years ago." Silver's lizard tail twitched as she sat on a tree stump, polishing her rifle by the camp fire.

"Well that's the idea, isn't it?" The only human girl of the group asked with a cheerful expression. Cora Primrose leaned against her massive claymore, her pink hair contrasting her blue-green outfit almost painfully. "We are here to catch some Grimm, riiiiight?" Silver simply rolled her eyes in annoyance, the other two were two busy arguing and yelling not so vague threats at each other to notice Cora.

Paladin Lightbringer would have none of this however, he stepped in between Igni and Chocolate to prevent them from killing each other. "Now my friends, this is not how comrades in arms should act!" The two had a hard time arguing against this because well, Paladin was a giant of a man wearing golden armor and wielding a big, golden hammer. How would you argue with that? "When the monsters of darkness come we will be the only ones to stand against it! We must be strong and courageous! Like the knights of old we will shine in the light..." He continued to ramble on about knighthood and something about dragons.

Wilson Black, the gorilla looking Faunus and the last member of this odd group, let out an angry growl. Though a genius scientist that he was, he also had the nastiest temper of the six. He almost crushed the device he had been trying to work on despite the distractions, which only made him all the angrier. He got up and started to approach Paladin, Igni, and Chocolate, the look on his gorilla like face most terrifying. "If you...don't shut up this instant..." He breathed heavily. "I will BREAK YOU WITH YOUR OWN LIMBS!"

Violet watched this all transpire with some disbelief. The higher ups wanted her to work with these weirdos? Well no matter, she would be rid of them as soon as their mission was complete. They were almost too perfect for this job, they were performing their roles perfectly whether they realized it or not. Violet silently left the camp, heading into the forest. There would be Grimm heading toward the camp soon enough, and she would lead them straight too it.

"Ugh..." Diamond grunted, her eyes shooting upwards in disapproval. While Oswald may have had some unfathomable fascination with the blunette they were approaching, Diamond didn't feel about the abrasive Sapphire quite so fondly. In fact, she was a sight Diamond could do without. She'd rather deal with Shiro, he was fun to torment at the very least. It didn't matter too much though, they were all outsiders. It just started looking up towards perhaps getting a chance to be alone for a while and getting some quality time with some of her more distant teammates, but no, there had to be distractions.

"You know what? You hauled yourself here from the infirmary, how about I just leave you here and you use your own two hands to reach us when you feel like it. I'm going to go find Emerald, see if I can come up with some way to tell her what happened without breaking the poor cat." she said, parking the wheelchair close to Sapphire and her company and striding off to... she didn't know where. Emmy just shot out of the room so quickly Diamond had no idea where to start looking.

@ABillionCats
Flipping out her scroll, the ex-thief started to type the message to ask for directions as she wandered the hallways in an idle search. So idle in fact that she wasn't looking where she was going, stopping abruptly jsut short of ramming into someone. In the split second of panic she hit the sned button on reflex with the message unfinished:

Hey, where did you run off to? I have something important to talk-

Lifting her gaze up, she froze a bit once more. "O-oh! Sorry, I wasn't paying attention." She apologized, her eyes glued into the emerald green orbs of the obstacle in front of her. So, I see she takes ofter her mom almost exclusively. Diamond thought as the uncanny resemblance registered in her brain. What were the chances...? "Say, you wouldn't happen to be Mrs. Felicia, would you?"

"I have no problem with that but we should probably move to a better area" Cian said as she saw the one girl leave ah well probably had a reason for it as well. "I dont know about you but if we are to do this than its best to do it in a safer location lest we leave craters in the courtyard." She continued as she fingered the metal briefcase that was slung over her shoulder. "A report on weapons huh well isnt that a interesting topic" Tristan muttered aloud as he heard the whole thing "still I have no reason to refuse company of young ladies such as yourself so why not?" He said as he once more stuffed his hands into his pockets. "So you going to follow Mindaro?" Cian asked smirking a bit at hearing her guardians typical response say what you will about him his one weakness was he was never able to say no to a female.

Luke Schwarz, Monday, Early O'Clock

"I have a feeling I will soon, yeah. Plus..."

Plus, there was the fact that for whatever reason, I felt like the ones I had now weren't working. Not out of any lack of viability on their part, they're in stunningly immaculate condition for hand-me-downs...

No, the problem here was with me. Despite them being very suited to my skills, something was missing. Something didn't feel right.

I frowned as I picked at the fluffy yellow masses of eggs on my plate.

"Hm."

If it were all about "feeling right", honestly? I wasn't the best candidate for them. If these gauntlets went to somebody who they would truly fit like a glove, it would be the girl who no doubt matched out mother in skill at her age.

Yeah...

If the limiting factor was how hard you could punch, wouldn't it make sense to hand them off to a harder puncher?

Did April even have a weapon right now? If she was getting by on only her fists and such, while i didn't doubt her abilities, it seemed kind of backwards...

Besides.

This isn't Signal. It's Beacon. We were going up against deadlier Grimm with way more frequency than they were. Maybe these could carry April through her whole career, which wouldn't even surprise me, but as for me...

Well, even if I have a safety net thanks to my semblance, if my instincts told me that these weren't what I needed for the job, I had better listen to them.

Force projection was what I needed. Something that would allow me to exceed my own limitations of reach and power, to keep me and by extension everyone else safer.

Fistfighting distance wasn't good enough for somebody as slow as me against monsters.

"I think it's also got something to do with my approach in general."

Gratia Mindaro - Beacon Cafeteria (Monday, Early Morning ~6-7am)

"Then find something that suits it."

Gratia Mindaro scooped the last remnants of the yoghurt into her mouth, placing the now-entirely-empty canister and spoon down onto her plate with a clatter. There was little advice on armaments that she could provide to the other teenager if all she knew of his issues were sourced entirely from information that was so irritatingly vague as "something ... in general". She couldn't fucking read minds like some two-bit trash oracle at a festival, so if Luke was seeking a less empty response, he would need to actually say something that wasn't so utterly meaningless to her.

"The armoury likely has surplus weaponry for you to test," she continued, onyx eyes boring into his with cool intensity. "Unless you are a gibbering fool with shit for brains, doing so should at least provide you with some semblance of what weapon you are suited for."

If Luke Schwarz had found an issue with his abilities, then the path that he needed to take would be to identify exactly what his flaws were, and how he could crush that flaw as rapidly and efficiently as possible. It was an obvious connection to make, but today, she would deign to offer him that suggestion, even if he were mere steps away from coming up with that conclusion.

He had enough brain cells to do so, after all.

IC: Baby Nazario

She supposed that she shouldn't exactly be surprised by Apophis being as odd as he was--Sangue, for as much as Amy was attached to her, wasn't exactly an ordinary girl. Still, exactly how strange Apophis looked was something of a shock. The stitched mouth, the missing eye, his posture, almost like a puppet with loose strings, they all added up to one odd individual. There was something to be said for heightened senses: he wasn't undead since he smelled perfectly normal, though his handshake evidently left a lot to be desired from the limp way he extended his arm.

He didn't want it, or he sucked at it. Either way, Amy wasn't going to try for one herself. She smiled, ruffling the back of her hair with her left hand before waving with it and putting her right arm around Sangue's shoulders. "I'm Amaranth Desire, but most people call me Amy. And I guarantee you that any joke you want to make with that name has already been made 50 times over."

...Amy had to admit she was somewhat comforted by his strangeness. That wasn't to say she wasn't unnerved by him--no, far from it. But at least if the others had odd families too, she could be a little more relaxed in not knowing her own.

IC: The Odd Family, Arin Glint

"We do have an Amaranth Desire, miss."

Wisteria blinked, a nervous smile spreading on her face for a moment before being swiftly canned and contained. "H-how do you know Amy? And what's with the... the... the..." The blonde woman giggled nervously as she looked behind Arin, to the couple that had just entered.

"Our relationship is purely a professional one, I assure you," Arin responded, the slightest hint of a smirk playing at his lips. If he noticed her distress, his face didn't show it. Just that maddening smirk that implied some internal joke she didn't or couldn't get. It was infuriating. Wisteria could feel her anger fighting with her nervousness, just wanting to scream at him to answer what it was he found so damn funny about her. But for the moment--like so many other times--her fury was losing. She just wanted to not be there, not have to deal with--

Andrew. Why? Why was he here, today? Surely he didn't... And who was that with him? Why couldn't she be somewhere else, Amy obviously already had-- UGH!

***

The other half of the conversation, on the other hand, was far more collected. But that was the norm, was it not?

At the rapidly expanding expression of panic and confusion on Wisteria's face, Arin finally looked over his shoulder to see what had alarmed her so, before turning slightly and stepping backward--both so he could see everyone in the room, and so Wisteria would no longer be shielded by his form from the other two--now three--in the room. His silver eyes absorbed the appearance of the male Hawk Faunus in the couple impassively, his attention turning to the newcomer and the Cat Faunus in turn, before time slowed.

Well, to be more accurate, his thoughts sped up. He knew Amaranth could do something similar, but her ability was more sensory. His was entirely in the brain.

Wisteria was easy to analyze, as it were. The almost flower like appearance, the lower lip trying to come out but barely being reeled in. She was a little girl in the body of an aging woman, obsessed with playing dress up and sticking with what she once was, with none of the patience, or integrity that came with age. She would not age gracefully, either, if she kept worrying about it as much as she did. Of course, he was somewhat cheating with her. He had always insisted that he did his research on... professional contacts, and he had found PLENTY of information in tabloids on Wisteria Desree while following Amaranth's trail. None recently, but it did not appear much had changed.

He frowned slightly as a flurry of thought regarding the couple raced through his head. The significance of the hawk Faunus was obvious, given Wisteria's reaction to him. If he was not Amaranth's father--someone Arin had not been able to find, regardless of the intensity of his information gathering--he was a close enough facsimile to evoke a response from the woman standing beside him. For the moment, Arin would move forward with that hypothesis. He did recognize the man--even if Hunters did not have the level of fame requisite, notable Hawk Fauni caught his eye, mostly because he was unable to solve the father problem.

The resemblance was truly remarkable.

Ticking over to the woman, Arin's mind had remarkably little to say. The hawk's wife, maybe? He did not seem to recognize Wisteria, at least not immediately, so he likely had not come here with her. The conversation they were having processed quickly. The two of them were here to see another student--an injured one--not Amy, adding another wrinkle to the puzzle.

The newcomer seemed to be inconsequential in regard to the scheme for the moment. He had his own business to take care of, after all, and he could not spend all of his brain energy on everyone he saw.

His thoughts slowed again as he noticed someone begin to cross his field of vision to leave.

"Leaving so soon, Ms. Desree? You have not even seen your daughter yet..."

Wisteria faltered, but continued.

He twisted the knife.

"They will surely tell her you were here. Odd behavior, to be sure. What would people think?"

She was pinned.

IC: Parents and Friends the rpg

@Kaithas@Forsythe

Ivy looked Diamond over curiously, eyeing her over for a moment, this had to be Diamond, Emerald had described her teammates to both her parents in various emails and phone calls, and this girl fit the bill, except without the hat that Emerald had mentioned she was fond off.

Of course she didn't take too much time analyzing the girl, after all it would be rude just to stare at her silently, she gave Diamond a warm and inviting smile. "I am Ms. Felicia yes. You must be Emerald's roommate, Diamond, she's mentioned you a handful of times in her calls and letters." Every word from Ivy's mouth was sweet and very sincere sounding. Her smile wavered slightly as she gave a look of concern. "I...I heard that you kids got some serious injuries on your last mission. Are you all alright? Is Emerald alright? She told us she was okay but a mother still worries..." Ivy's eyes widened slightly. "Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to start bombarding you with questions. Here, have a cookie, I baked enough for everyone." She opened the basket in her hand and pulled out a fresh looking cookie, offering it to Diamond.

---

Now normally Andrew was one to pay attention to his surroundings, it was a thing you learned to do as a huntsman, it was like instinct. However he had barely noticed the conversation between Diamond and his wife, his eyes were fixed ahead at the older man and middle aged woman having a somewhat intense conversation in front of them. He hadn't recognized her at first, it had been well over twenty years after all, but could it be her? No, don't be ridiculous Andrew, she just looks like her. What are the odds she'd be here of all places? On this very day? He had to admit the odds were ridiculous...but then he saw her glance at him, the panicked expression in her face gave it all way, she recognized him, it had to be her.

The real question was, why was she so distressed and panicked from seeing him after all these years? It wasn't like they'd left on bad terms, it had been a one night thing, before he even met Ivy.

She obviously knew something he didn't, either that or there was some sort of misunderstanding. Either way Andrew reckoned there was no point in just staring, he was gonna figure this out.

And the best way to do that was the straight forward way, just ask. He walked right up to them. "Uh, hello there. Now forgive me if I'm mistaken, but that look on your face tells me you knew me and I knew you once upon a time. Am I right? Or am I just making an ass of myself here, I tend to do that from time to time." He chuckled nervously and scratched the back of his head.

Luke Schwarz, Monday, Early O'Clock

"Mm." I responded charismatically. "I should check it out."

It seemed that I had allowed that energy I sensed to peter off by changing the subject, as unfortunate as that was. Glancing up from my food, I found Gratia's onyx eyes boring into my skull with their usual quiet intensity.

Not that her gaze was "usual" by any normal sense of the word, but you know what I mean. Just the sort of look she always affixed you that just had a vibe of "get to the point and get the point done", or somesuch along those lines. She wasn't much for suffering through pointless chatter and roundabout idiocy, despite my best efforts at "exposure therapy".

Read: Chattering pointlessly and being a roundabout idiot.

"Going off of both a little mental review and what my gut tells me, the problem's range." I elaborated. Hopefully this would appease her a little.

I can't believe I felt I had to appease someone I decided to approach for help, but here I was making the judgement call anyway.

"It's already enough of a liability to need to get into fistfighting distance, even before you take into account that I'm a smaller guy with a shorter reach than most. Combat being a game of inches and all makes that all the worse, I would wager."

Having always been a short young man, I wasn't particularly insecure or miffed about the fact that even the girl I was talking to stood taller than I, but facts were facts. I'm no good in a fight if I can't ply my trade from further out than a couple of feet and something's stopping me from getting that close.

"After all, I'm not nearly as quick or as skilled as my sister. I move practically in slow motion compared to that girl. In-and-out movement comes to her about as naturally as you eating candy or me struggling in Language."

The drillfists really should have gone to her. They probably would have had I not decided to selfishly rekindle my desire to Hunt at almost the literal last second.

I hope she isn't too mad about it.

"So what I need is something that could make up the difference, and potentially hit harder than just the strength of my own punches. I'm currently my own limiting factor."

I didn't entirely lack pop, but a hard target might need something more.

Hrm.

Something that could smash or punch straight through...

---

@Suku

May the Schwarzes be with you!

"Sounds like a plan, then! Let's get a move on, gang!"

"Remember, we're 14."

"I'm 15. What's that got to do with anything?"

"Just important information to keep in mind, don't worry about it, sis!"

So she didn't. If there were a better example of the maxim of "be water", then you would be hard-pressed to find it.

Sometimes, days just went from bad to worse.

Damn him. Damn whoever this creep was, acting like he knew her daughter better than she did, pulling her back here, bringing attention when she just wanted to leave. "Maybe?" A nervous laugh forced its way out of her as the older man seemed to retreat into himself, seemingly satisfied with the mischief he'd managed. "But the odds are so low, never go on appearance alone, I always say--"

"Ms. Desree? Wisteria? Do you want me to call your daughter and give you her schedule, or not?"

A real frown that went all the way to her forehead spread across her face as she backpedaled. "I mean, it is entirely possible, but--It may even be likely--Maybe?"

"I'm Lauren! Sangue's best friend on the whole planet, and--aaagh--fuck!" Lauren had slipped behind the rest of her team and braced one long leg on the wall, attempting to use it as a fulcrum to lift Joyous Guard. For some reason, though, the shield wasn't budging, even with her considerable strength and near-universally active Semblance. She couldn't even be sure she was budging it. What the fuck? This is bullshit!

It looks like a Sangue, but it's built like an Amy!

Either Ben had designed a shield that was too heavy and unwieldy for anyone to use, or he had used his precious alone time in the Armory to concoct some kind of fucking magical bullshit-ass Camelot weapon that only he could lift. That wasn't fair at all! She was his best friend, his other half, his fembro! How could he design a weapon she wasn't allowed exclusive backup rights to? And after all the Aura her boobs had donated Lawnslot on his behalf, too!

Well, two can play at this game, sneaky waitman devil.

Next time I molest you, I'm spraying my hands with stickum. See if you can lift me off...

Lauren strained to lift the shield up again, a low groan building between her clenched white teeth--

"Your stance is slipping," called an amused voice from down the hall. Lauren's hands slid right off Joyous Guard as she whirled. The woman advancing had to be in her mid-to-late forties, but dressed as though she were still a woman who had just passed the cusp of thirty. Her black t-shirt was tied in a knot, revealing a familiar toned midriff and a pierced navel, and her long legs had an instantly recognizable determined stride. Bright, laughing hazel eyes looked at Lauren and then to the shield with mock disappointment.

"You lift with your legs, not with your back, beloved. You're going to give yourself a herni--"

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

shrieked the girl.

Lauren Negasi took off on a running start to embrace her mother in a flying glomp, legs configuring into a makeshift padlock around the woman's waist as her arms squeezed the life from the woman's neck, gibbering "momsmomsmomsmomsmomsmomsmomsmomsmomsmomsmomsmooooooooommmmmmmmmmssssss!" unintelligibly as the woman squeezed back. Her grip seemed only marginally less powerful than Lauren's - Lauren's back, stressed from trying to lift the shield, popped once under the pressure - and she twirled a giggling Lauren around once in the hallway before resting her chin on the girl's shoulder and looking at the rest of the students - and the grotesque guardian - assembled.

"Wallahi," she greeted apologetically, ruffling Lorena's hair as though the affectionate gesture would instill some manners in her feral young lady. "I go by Costa."
