The room was dimly lit, and it stunk of cigarette smoke. The only light source seemed to be from a single lamp, hanging from the ceiling, and the light of day shining through the blinds behind the desk. This was enough light to see the state of the room.

Papers occupied nearly every flat surface, including the floor around desks and tables. The top of a small TV was covered in them, and an old-fashioned turn-dial phone looked threatened to be overwhelmed by them. However, your attention was drawn to the desk in front of you. For behind that desk sat your possible employer.

She was a woman, who appeared to be in her mid twenties insofar as you could guess, though being in her early or late twenties was not entirely out of the question. Her red hair was tied up in a ponytail, and she wore a white shirt. Her skin was pale, and she leaned back in her seat as she surveyed you. An ash tray sat on her desk, issuing smoke from a recently-discarded cigarette. The ash tray itself was much like the rest of the room: filled with clutter.

The woman's eyes, which matched her hair, regarded you behind thin-framed glasses. She was neither tall nor short. Her appearance certainly was not unattractive, she was rather pretty to be truthful, but her expression was a focused, almost harsh one. She took a deep breath, and the cigarette in her mouth burned down further. She took it from her mouth and blew out smoke, then raised an eyebrow at you.

"You don't have to look so worried, " she began, cracking a smile, "I'm not going to eat you. I guess you're here for the openings?"

Nod.

"Well then, let's see your credentials..."

You offered her a paper, and she took it from you. She looked it over, her expression becoming serious once more. "Hmm... interesting, interesting... you think you'll make a good detective, then?"

Nod.

"Well..." she shrugged, "I was asking for new employees, and now you're here. It's not as if I see any reason to turn you away, your skills look pretty useful."

She took another drag on her cigarette, then blew the smoke out. "So, you're hired."

---

Unexplainable crimes that defy human ability.

A detective agency that only some people can see.

Deep in Kawa City, there lies what appears to be an empty lot. For some reason, this lot has been left untouched by builders. Some go to survey it, but they always dismiss it for some reason. It's simply ruled to be a place that's impossible to build on, for one reason or another. However, there are some people, some people with... gifts, that are capable of seeing what lies in this supposedly empty lot. Anyone considered supernatural is capable of piercing the veil that hides what lies in this empty lot.

The Fu Sonzai no Gensō detective agency deals strictly in cases beyond the realm of local law enforcement. Those who are able to see it go to it to have cases of an unusual nature solved. Cases that someone with mere human capability could not possibly have perpetrated.

And now, it's hiring.

---

Magi: Capable of magic, invoked by spells and symbols, sometimes in conjunction with one another. Magical prowess is passed through bloodlines, some families having more or less mana(and higher or lower quality mana) then others. Magi will have an affinity, which can range from things like fire to gravity to numbers. Affinities(which are also passed through bloodlines) are not limited to the affinity itself, but also includes things that are conceptually linked to it. For example, a mage with an affinity for fire would also excel at spells involving "consumption", "ignition", and "destruction". Magi can preform spells outside their affinity, though it is more difficult to learn. Affinities cannot be for anything entirely man-made.
Note: The most powerful mage(in terms of raw power) in this setting has an affinity for mana. They will not be appearing in this RP, and mana as an affinity is strictly off-limits. Other affinities that are off limits include Death, a totally unique affinity also claimed in this setting and absolutely broken for the purposes of this RP.
Onmyouji: Magical practioners utilizing onmyodo as opposed to western methods of magic. They are similar(magic is passed through bloodlines, they have the same affinities), yet their methods are fundamentally different. Effectively they use the same magic, but with different methods. Onmyouji use ofuda to cast spells, which can be applied to objects or even bodies for a variety of effects. Onmyouji are also adept at preforming exorcisms.
Magic Traits: Some magi and onmyouji families possess a special "magic trait", an inherent magical ability connected to their affinity. These are quite uncommon, but they still exist. They require no spellcasting, and usually give some edge in ability. The magic trait "Illusion Break", for example, passively destroys illusions as the mage or onmyouji draws close to them. It also enables them to see through illusions.
Alchemist: A sub-branch of magi focused on the transformation and alteration of matter, often used to construct Alchemical Devices. The Philosopher's Stone, the Jaws of Envy, the Fires of Heaven, all of these are devices created by alchemists. Most alchemists have very little ability to cast spells of their own and instead rely on devices to aid them. Unlike magi who exclusively utilize theurgy, this is usually not viewed as "cutting corners because you're a slipshod mage" as the production of alchemical devices has proven valuable in the past.
Homunculi: Artificial humans created via a union of raw materials and a soul, homunculi are able to be created to a variety of specifications, from creating an ideal assassin to creating someone with the power to boost abilities. They have personalities and thoughts of their own, and an infinite lifespan. Most homunculi will hit a certain age and cease to age beyond that. Homunculi are NOT common, due to difficulties involved in creating them and the inability to simply create souls meaning some kind of sacrifice must be involved. Only one homunculus permitted. I am expecting a good explanation for why they exist. The homunculus has been claimed.
Vampires: Rather straightforward, vampires are human in appearance, and must drink blood to survive. They are faster and stronger then humans, and capable of regenerating from any damage that does not destroy either the heart or the brain. The sun weakens them and causes them to fall unconscious, but they will recover when out of the sun. Vampires are frozen at the age they were turned, and cannot die of old age. Only one vampire permitted. I am expecting a good explanation for why they are working for a detective agency. The vampire has been claimed.

Now that that's over with, this RP is based heavily upon solving mysteries. And magic. Both will feature extensively in the RP. Player characters are to be employees of the Fu Sonzai no Gensō detective agency. This means that, by default, they must have some kind of supernatural ability. There is a Masquerade in place, so normal people won't know about the supernatural.

---

Basic Rules of Magic: Magic requires some form of spell to be invoked. The more powerful the spell, the longer the spell is. The length of spells can be countered with a few methods, including the use of runes, casting the spell mentally(though this method requires extensive practice and will result in a weaker spell) or storing the spell in an object capable of receiving it. Some spells may also be prepared ahead of time. Onmyouji are capable of circumventing casting time due to the use of ofuda, but their spells require application of the ofuda to a target or themselves directly.

While I did not feel "small group" was entirely appropriate, I'm looking for 5-7 players for this RP at most.

Name: Ando Toshiko
Age: 28
Appearance: She's a bit of a blatant expy. ^^;
Personality: Toshiko enjoys spending life with people she cares about, and generally makes for fairly pleasant company. However, she will change her behavior depending on the situation. When talking to employees, she is friendly, calm, and kind. When speaking with a perpetrator, for example, she makes a drastic change, approaching cruelty. In addition, it is not difficult to rouse her to anger and she has a remarkable lack of patience for someone who has taken a profession as a detective. When sufficiently angered, she will remove her glasses and and begin taking things extremely seriously. She enjoys cigarettes and seems to have something against organizing her office. Toshiko's ultimate goal is to attain immortality, as well as ensure no-one causes too many problems that interfere with having a pleasant life. Toshiko is terrible with money and spends incredibly frequently, sometimes on magical items and other times on things she simply thinks are interesting.
Abilities: Toshiko has Fire as her Affinity. As such, she is highly skilled in spells relating to fire. She is capable of casting spells by "carving" symbols in the air using a lit cigarette. Notable among her spells is an Instant Ignition spell. While it requires a full magic circle to be "carved" in the air, it will instantly ignite a target. As Toshiko's affinity is fire, she is also skilled with spells involving "consumption", "ignition", and "destruction". In addition, she has learned spells outside of her affinity. These spells are primarily wards and illusions, which she uses to conceal the Fu Sonzai no Gensō building from the eyes of regular humans.
Weapons/Equipment: Toshiko has a great deal of cigarettes with her at almost all times. Not only does she like them, but they aid her casting. She also has a suitcase, though she doesn't actually use it to store any important items... She says it houses something interesting and leaves it at that.
Brief Backstory: Toshiko was born into the Ando family, a family of magi with the goal of accessing the plane of existence the gods dwell on. Early in life, Toshiko was mentored in magic by her grandfather. When she reached her late teens, she was sent to a Mage Circle in London to train. It was here that she chose to abandon her family's goal, firmly believing it to be unattainable. While her family was initially outraged by her decision, they eventually relaxed and came to accept their daughter. This was, in part, because Toshiko's sister had not displayed the same desire to give up. Deciding to pursue the goal of immortality, Toshiko returned to Japan and founded the Fu Sonzai no Gensō detective agency in an effort to ensure pleasant life wasn't disrupted. Also to make money.

I like the sound of this. I'm interested, just a question before I start making a character. How difficult would you say it is to make a Philosopher's Stone to make the Elixir of Life? Because I was thinking of maybe having an Alchemist who was quite old and lived a long life via the elixir, and he joined because he needed something new. At any rate I'll have a character in the next few days most likely, not tonight though, got work in a few hours.

Impossible. ^^;

There's only ever been a single Philosopher's Stone. It's the Philosopher's Stone, not a philosopher's stone.

There are various ways of gaining immortality that are all varying levels of complex and not exactly easy, which is why Toshiko's current goal has yet to be met.

We've also got an alchemist character getting planned already. ^^;

Alright, wasn't sure how we'd be going about that. If it would be like Full Metal Alchemist or what. Think an Alchemist would be able to make a way of extending their life? Because now I'm liking the idea of a couple hundred year old guy who just joined out of boredom haha ^_^

While there are various paths to immortality(none of which are clear-cut), this isn't like FMA. In addition, we do already have someone who's been talking to me about using an alchemist and planning their character out. ^^;

Name: Iwajima Jun

Age: nine years old.

Appearance: [] definitely the appearance of a reliable supernatural detective!

Personality: Jun can at times be incredibly focused, serious, and mature, which is only natural for someone who has worked hard enough to nearly master certain areas of Onmyoudo at such a young age. On the other hand the fact remains that he's still a child despite his high level of skill and his tendency towards hyperactivity is made worse by an overactive imagination fed by a combination of living in a magical world and ready access to media.

Abilities: Possess a high degree of skill with Onmyoudo, his affinity being the number 9. This allows him to use a variety of spells and techniques with his ofuda so long as they ultimately have something to do with the number nine either conceptually or concretely. He also has a surprising amount of martial arts expertise for someone his age, due to being raised to fight yokai.

Weapons/Equipment: Has his trusty detective's trenchcoat, though the only thing unique about it is that its pockets have ofuda on them that allow them nine times as much storage space. mainly used for carrying ofuda.

Brief Backstory:
Jun was a son of a powerful family of onmyouji who primarily made their living combating rogue yokai and other supernatural creatures. Toshiko knew his family from the time when she was in training and owed them a few favours for reasons she'd rather not mention. Because of his family's work, Jun was strictly trained in onmyoudo and related lore before he even started primary school, even to the extent of being given the Gazu Hyakki Yagyo in place of ordinary picture books. However his entire family died under mysterious circumstances. Under previous instructions his father had given him just in case anything ever happened that left him on his own, Jun sought out the Fu Sonzai no Gensō Detective Agency and has been living and occasionally working there part-time ever since, hoping to become a real detective some day and solve his family's case.

Well I'm back from work, before I go to bed I have a question. If my character had mage parents but he decided to follow the path of alchemy, would he still be able to cast spells? Obviously at a lower level than an actual mage, but more than a normal alchemist perhaps? At the cost of being not as great in his alchemy since he spends some time honing his magic in a way which is not related to alchemy. Just a thought, I hope I'm making sense, I've been up all night. Hope there's a response when I wake up, night.

@Dblade26: Accepted.

@duskshine749: Well, with that kind of setup his parents probably wouldn't be too happy... but if you want to go with an alchemist I'd really recommend waiting and seeing what the alchemist we're already going to have(I've been discussing things with the player privately) will be like.

Since the cast is only 5-7 players(just over the "small group" limit), it's good to not have too much overlap. In addition, alchemists are much less common then onmyouji or magi in Japan so their numbers would be smaller there, so it's unlikely there'd be a whole lot of them in one small group like this.

Name: (Ando) Akemi

Age: Actually six, physically and mentally fifteen.

Appearance: Younger than she looks in both meanings of the word.

Personality: Almost completely void of emotion in normal situations, you'd have to wonder if Toshiko made a mistake in creating her. As it turns out, Akemi simply doesn't show it very well. She's actually somewhat shy, even if you'd never notice her discomfort, and loves cooking. She's definitely got her childish points, and treats Toshiko like her mother (which is more or less accurate).
For some reason, the homunculus finds cars terrifying.

Abilities: Created for the purpose of protecting Toshiko, Akemi's notable skills are simply straight-up combat, with an emphasis on making sure the attacker can't cause problems again making her find it rather more difficult to simply subdue someone. Despite being equally good with her sword or unarmed, she prefers to cut things even though this adds in the difficulty of hiding a weapon when travelling around. As a homunculus made to fight, her physical abilities are beyond what a human could ever get by training... as is her appetite.
Aside from combat skill, Akemi is a good cook and efficient cleaner, which is a good thing for the agency itself, otherwise the food quality would probably decrease to 'what can be cooked solely by boiling water' and grime would build on everything. That's what Akemi expects, at least.

Weapons/Equipment: Her sword's magically reinforced, because you never know when something soft and fleshy is going to turn out to be as hard as steel when the supernatural is involved.

Brief Backstory: Created several years back as a safety net, when it wasn't certain that the Ando family would simply accept their daughter ignoring all their plans, Akemi's original purpose as a bodyguard against retribution turned out to not be needed. Still, with nowhere else to go--and at the time looking like a child--she stayed with Toshiko, getting interested in cooking and happily taking better care of the adult mage despite their relative life experience. Even after coming back to Japan and starting a detective agency, she's kept it up.
The maid outfit was her idea.

First off when is this set? I'm guessing modern day, but it would be rude to assume. Next, I was considering writing a Homunculus. Made during 1942 in a batch to fight in WW2 (or other arbitrary date that fits with the setting of the RP). 'He' (gender is rather pointless as a Homunculus, correct?) survived, but knows he is on borrowed time due to his expiration date.

Thoughts? I didn't want to get too far into it if my Homunculus idea doesn't fit for now.

The RP is set in modern day, yes. But given the secrecy of magic it's very, very unlikely they'd be made for World War 2, and especially not on a mass scale. Since they're replicas of human life that require a soul in order to function, getting that soul is the reason they are purpose-built rather than built on a large scale. That and the assembly of raw materials for the body often proving to be a somewhat complex process that requires care. They also don't usually come with expiration dates, as homunculi are built to freeze at either an optimum age for their purpose, or just to freeze at some age where they will function well, and then cease all aging. If a homunculus does die like that, something was done wrong.

And we already have our single homunculus, as well. ^^; Since, while they're not super-rare given how useful it is to have a purpose-built person who has been "programmed" for loyalty and can be "programmed" do do all kinds of things a human cannot, they're not common enough that more then one would be in a single small agency like this, unless Toshiko was actively seeking them out.

Let me know how it is/if I need to fix anything

Name: Zeke Pascal
Age: 112 (Appears 25 at most)

Appearance:

Personality: Zeke is a romancer, he loves to love. In his 112 years he has loved and lost so many times, but he can't stop himself. Some would call it lack of self control, Zeke sees it as him over-committing to relationships. Zeke enjoys food and cooking more than that, it doesn't sustain him in the slightest when compared to blood, but he enjoys the taste more than anything and has discovered that a particularly rare steak can be useful as a light snack.
He loves his bike, being one of the few things that has lasted the decades Zeke has been alive.
For the past ten years Zeke has been going through a mid-life crisis and is re-living the 50's, taking out his old Greaser clothes and rediscovering his love of cigarettes.
Zeke occasionally gets into a depression if he reminisces about his past, his loves more specifically.

Abilities: Zeke has the traditional powers of a Vampire, superior strength and speed, regeneration and immortality. Biologically Zeke's senses have been enhanced and has become immune to minor illusions and after years of practice has mastered persuasion.
Immortality has the side effect of giving Zeke an insane amount of time of which to pursue whatever skill that takes his fancy. In the past he has been a mechanic, a carpenter, a bartender, a boxer, a stage actor and at one time he worked as a journalist.

Weapons/Equipment: A 1941 Crocker Motorcycle, heavily tinted sunglasses for the rare times he has to go outside in the day, a hip-flask of chilled blood, a pack of cigarettes, a battered notebook of loves lost, a comb and a silver knife.

Brief Backstory: Zeke was born to a bog standard family, no great tragedy and no real troubles, beyond growing up through the great depression and prohibition periods. When he was 24 Zeke worked as a mechanic, he wasn't bad at it, but he did have a bad habit of having a messy workplace. One day, as all stories do, Zeke was working under a particularly rich man's car when the the jack keeping the car up suddenly broke, and he was crushed underneath the steel chassis. Before Zeke lost consciousness he heard a muffled voice say
"Why'd you mess up my car?" Next thing he knew he woke up on a morgue table with a rather regal man with a snow white moustache standing over him.

"Well now that you're up, you can fix my car Zeke!" Zeke must have looked extremely confused so the man jumped into an explanation "Zeke you died under my car and made a real mess of it. I did this so you so that you would repair it. I am a Vampire. I resurrected you as Vampire, so now you will have... issues in sunlight. I'll give you a handbook later. Now fix my car" lifting Zeke up by his collar the man dragged him to a police impound lot and forced Zeke to repair it. Once Zeke was done the man thanked him and drove off into the midnight, leaving Zeke to figure out what was going on without the help of that promised notebook.

Years later Zeke managed to keep his 'eternal' life running for over 100 years despite other magical forces trying to shorten it, the 90's was particularly rough since Buffy the Vampire slayer made his life more difficult than he anticipated. Now the 21st century Zeke was tired and longed for simpler days and led him falling into a mid-life crisis of sorts, he wanted to do something worthwhile, to actually help people that won't kill him for his trouble, especially after a decade or two of achieving little besides staying alive Zeke stumbled across the Fu Sonzai no Gensō.

Bios:
Name: Enoch Roswell
Age: 25
Appearance:

Personality: A flirtatious individual who has an uncanny talent of sensing when women (beautiful women specifically) are in a time of need. Enoch is still able to retain a professional attitude while working though he still may throw a few flirtatious comments every now and again. He does however respect Toshiko and won't flirt with her. Due to his past as an ex-criminal, he does have slight trouble keeping his hands off valuable objects and tends to be stickler with money. Though because of his shady past he knows how the mind of a criminal works and know's the trade like the back of his hand. He is very sociable and charming though at the same time he is deceptive and clever, which is what he uses in his interrogations though if that doesn't work he isn't above anyone else to perform less than...ethical methods. It is worth noting that he likes to be free and hates being restricted by responsibility.

Abilities: Enoch's affinity is the cat. When these spells are activated, many passive abilities are unlocked, such as acute night vision. He is able to see in darkness as if it was sunny. His sense of hearing increases drastically, being able to pick up frequencies that humans normally can't and noises from a greater distance. Enoch's sense of smell also increases as he is able able to pick up the faintest of smells. And obviously, he is able use cat claws in combat. The magic circle of this is carved on his back. A magic trait that's been passed down his family is Illusion Break, a passive skill that allows a person to see through illusions.

He is very skilled in hand to hand combat and weaponry though where he truly shines is his extensive knowledge of different types of crimes and the know how of how to perform them with ease. As a trained thief, his is also very stealthy and is able to sneak by without a sound. He is exceptionally good at forgery to the point where others can't distinguish the real thing from the fake.

Weapons/Equipment: Throwing knives, smoke bombs

Brief Backstory: The Roswell family was notorious as a family of master thieves who have the ability of magi. Enoch was the next to be the head of the family since he was the first born son and thus was made sure to be molded into the perfect thief and a powerful magi. Though they spoke of great plans for the young boy, Enoch had no interest of being the head of a crime family because he valued his freedom too much to be tied down to his family's desire. At 18 years old he was an infamous figure in the crime world due to his first class skills as a thief though he grew more worried that he would be brought into the position of the head of the family soon due to his father's recent illness. Enoch ran away and was deemed a traitor by his family and they searched for years to find him and bring him back by any means necessary. The young man was able to out smart them all and covered his tracks as he fled to Japan, prospering as a thief until seven years later Toshiko had caught him in one of her cases. Rather than turning him in, she gave him the option of either coming to work for her or be thrown in jail. Despite his hurt pride, he took her offer and became a detective.
