Diego was slightly annoyed that the guard had been half asleep. If only he could be paid to take naps! Nevertheless, he repeated himself, providing more details and speaking more slowly.
"I am Diego Lumu... nevermind. I'm a messenger. I've been sent to warn you of a wicked massacre. Several guards lie dead or dying in the street. If you act quickly, you may be able to save a few of them, but I'm almost certain it is far too late. More importantly, you need to protect the people and warn the king. I don't know what or who killed them, but it must have been powerful and I think it used magic," he paused to take a breath, " You should go and alert the others. I'll just collect my reward and be off," Diego added. A simple reward for a simple task.
Now that he was thinking about it, it might be best to get out of this damn place. The kidnappings had gone up to a somewhat concerning level and although nobody would be desperate enough to try and kidnap him, he knew that guards were getting more alert, which certainly didn't help. He also owed a ridiculous amount of money to that mafia boss, probably more than anyone. Not to mention that, in general, he was running low on luck, food, and resources. He was thinking of heading off to a larger city farther south, but he needed a horse. Hopefully, the reward would be enough to cover for most or all of the horse. It would be much easier to commit crime in a more populated place.
