@DMZ Although the technology section of the codex isn't up yet, the "Earth" and "Humanity" sections should give you a reasonable estimation of how advanced the technology will be.

Have you read the OP? The whole goal of our character's is to prevent expansion onto other planets.

As for technology, with advanced filtering capabilities which would likely be present in the future water will be completely recyclable (read up on the ISS' water supply). As for food, genetically modified crops have already proved to be the way of the future in the mass production of food, as long as we limited food-waste we wouldn't have a problem sustaining a larger population (American throws away 40% of its food).

Except the population is like over 2x the population is today. We may throw away a lot of food, and we may be able to make more, but with the amount of people, damn, food production would struggle with keeping up with the needs of people. I suspect that food shortages in poorer areas and even in some lower middle-class areas might not be unexpected or uncommon. Even the rich's feast may be equal to a middle-class meal at a restaurant that enjoys large meal portions.

@WilsonTurner Yeah, but I'm just basing this on what I see today. This takes place four thousand years in the future, farming techniques and waste recycling might be advanced to a level that I can scarcely imagine.

Think of a society in which all the nutrients are filtered from human waste to nurture the next generation of crops, which are produced in multi-tiered tanks which occupy a fraction of the space of conventional fields and do not need natural sunlight or any of the other limiters on our current fields? Well, they'd be able to make more than twice as much food. It may sound like fiction, but this is fiction.

Of course, there'd still be problems like you say, I'm just playing the devil's advocate to the normal issues of giant societies.

Well, I didn't suggest people colonize other planets, rather they harness their resources and bring them to Earth. I believe I already read in the OP that our drones have been actively travelling through the universe.

No matter how much we progress in technology our planet cannot sustain our ever increasing population. That's a simple irrefutable fact. Thomas Malthus, a revered economist, calculated that human population tends to grow exponentially whereas our ability to feed ourselves tends to grow linearly. I could make you a diagram to explain it if you like.
It's not just the way to make food, clearly in the OP there's no room to make it. The entire planet is one giant city, which is also nonsense since our current population can fit in a city size of LA. There's plenty of room for people on the planet.

Well then. I'll set the record straight.

Water supply is taken from the oceans and filtered/purified to be drinkable. There is enough water from lakes and oceans and ice to sustain the world, considering that today, we're sustaining and we only inhabit under 30% of the space on Earth today with 7 billion people. Considering the population has doubled to 14 billion, we'd be sitting at under 60% total occupied where the Earth is 70% covered in water, we'd still have a surplus if things are looked at in that perspective (not real math but good enough to convey the point). Combine that with recycling and yes, water is a non-issue. Food is also massed produced and since a good chunk of the population is more machine than man, not everybody requires food.

Resources that have been exploited and depleted have been replaced with effective alternatives and artificial materials.

Considering that the entire population ISN'T in LA today, then there's no reason to suggest that some massive exodus to one spot occurred at any point either. People like space, nations like boundaries and not everywhere in a city is home to individuals. Industrial sectors, economic centers, political centers aren't the same as residential centers. Lots of space is devoted to manufacturing, recycling and powering the massive platforms surrounding the Earth.

Now, regarding this argument that is brewing. I understand the skepticism, but please remember that this setting is still a work in progress and others are free to provide their input to help flesh out the world. We don't have the ability to look five thousand years into our future and see how Earth and Humanity is going to end up so this setting is fantasy and doesn't need to be realistic. I'm explaining at a capacity to make one think 'I can picture this' without having them go into the physics and logic behind it since there shouldn't be. How would Coruscant in Star Wars be logical? And that's like a super-sized version of this setting's Earth. Please, everybody, read other's posts neutrally to not get the wrong idea.

My additions were meant to be proposals to you so it is up to you whether they are implemented or not. Thank you for elaborating on your thought process, I didn't see it that way.
