Name: Justin Oliver
Alias/Nickname: N/A
Appearance:
Age: 22
Race: Human
Personality: Polite and friendly, albeit a bit… Absentminded, from time to time. As though at least part of his mind is elsewhere. Generally only when first approached, however. As soon as he focuses on something or someone, they (or it) have (or has) his absolute attention. Far from shy to speak his mind, he nevertheless manages to seem like a background figure in the doings of the Tower. This stems from a single fact; Justin doesn’t see much sense in drawing attention to himself. Earning an epithet like “The Unstoppable”, or “Lord of the Library” or some such is all well and good, but it does little to augment one’s efficiency. It actually does the opposite, from time to time, by hampering one’s ability to blend in and amping up their target’s desperation.
That is not to say, however, that Justin is one to hide. Despite his largely relaxed nature, Justin has a hotheaded streak. Threats or insults tend to reveal the steel hiding behind courtesy, and he can be a bit overzealous in completing his tasks once he set his mind to it.
Biography/history: In Angel’s Landing, it’s common knowledge that the lower you go, the further out from the center, the poorer the people get. The higher the crime rate gets. Outside the paradise of the rich is the hell of the poor. Above-ground, at least, the situation is livable; but below it are the catacombs and ruins of a city conquered dozens of times over. A philosopher might go on about what that says of the human (or any other race, for that matter) condition, but chances are that few in the slums have read their works. This was where Justin grew up, surrounded by the worst Angel’s Landing had to offer.
That’s not to say it was a bad childhood. His parents were caring, and as generous as they could be with what they had. They taught him to read early on, kept him healthy, and made sure he was educated. But in Angel Landing’s slums, you learn how to take care of yourself. And you learn fast, if you want to go through life intact. For anyone who showed even the most modest sign of wealth, it was worse. Justin’s parents ran a small shop, selling almost anything they thought could turn a profit. It wasn’t a highly profitable business, just enough to keep itself and his family afloat, but it was like a beacon for would-be thieves. By the time Justin was twelve he had been present for six attempted robberies, one successful one, and two cases of breaking and entering. By the time he was sixteen he had personally had to fend off three robbers while minding the store. Defending himself, and the store, got easier as he grew older in large part due to his skill with magic and arms. His skill with a weapon was passed on by his father, using a well-worn shotgun kept under the register. The magic, on the other hand, was all self-taught. Methods learned from books he dug up at the library, spells he tested and tested again until he got them right. Wild Magic, mostly, but he had had some success in dabbling with Exandra’s domain.
But while he grew stronger, the streets grew rougher. Or perhaps their shop just drew more attention by holding the robbers at bay. When he was seventeen, members of a local gang started leaning on the business for ‘fees’. What the fee was ranged from visit to visit, sometimes it was for insurance, sometimes for overhead or any one of a dozen other reasons, but there was no secret regarding what it actually was. They were refused every time, no matter how ‘insistent’ their requests became, but the tension continued to build.
Until the day he came home from errands to find it on fire. His parents were, thankfully, alive; unconscious and left to burn behind the register. Not without injury, however; both needed medical treatment, his father critically, from injuries sustained during their struggle with the assailants.
Once they were safely in the hospital’s care, Justin walked back to the shop and wasn’t seen again until he checked himself into the hospital a full day later.
In the months that followed, while his parents recovered and past the end of their recovery, they were moved into a home in a better neighborhood. Justin visited them often during the early weeks of their adjustment, and still visits them often. He obtained an apartment on the border between the middle class neighborhoods and the slums, and started making a name for himself. Exactly what he started as is a little unclear, depending on who you talk to, but what it became was a certainty; Justin became a private investigator. One who took any job, dealing with theft, kidnapping, conspiracy, or murder, and ascertained the perpetrator and brought them to justice. One way or another.
His recruitment into the Knights of the Star, in truth, represents an expansion of that goal.
Reason for recruitment: Justin joined the Knights for access to better resources, support, and an expanded ability to act upon the crimes and injustices of the world.
Strength of Will: Greater
Magic:
Wild:
Conjuration:
-Summoning: Justin is capable, provided he can concentrate for a few moments, summon his armor to his person as well as a selected weapon as needed. Doing so with any great frequency is highly draining, so he uses this only when necessary.
Abjuration:
-Defensive fields, of varying strengths, that Justin can someone as needed for enchant an object with.
-Healing, limited primarily to either small injuries or lessening the severity of a critical injury.
Force:
-Fireballs, one of the most basic of Force magics, are his primary use of this type.
Channeled:
-Oath of the Impartial: In keeping with Exandra’s focus on the law, good or bad, Justin is capable of invoking the deity’s authority in creating a binding oath or contract, with a breach in that agreement punishable by a sentence laid out in the agreement. Also useful for creating binding terms of engagement with an enemy.
-Persistence of the Just: Exandra’s influence can be invoked to heighten Justin’s physical attributes (speed, strength, and stamina) significantly while in pursuit of a target. Doing so for too long will leave him feeling drained when the effect wears off.
-Solemn Judgement: Like all adherents to Exandra’s will, Justin possesses the ability to summon the deity to arbitrate a matter of judgement. Obviously this is not done lightly.
-REDACTED
God relations: Exandra and Orcorum, with varying degrees of allegiance to them both. Their realms are both pillars of his life, and he tends to channel their domains into all he does.
Tech:
-REDACTED
-Railgun Autorevolver: Propels projectiles using a miniaturized railgun system to impart great forces upon the comparatively small projectiles. Features a removable cylinder, allowing him to reload and switch between munitions types with relative ease. Generally carries standard rounds, armor-piercing, and hollow-point. Each cylinder holds nine rounds, and rotates the next bullet into position after every shot.
-Vibrosword: Longsword that vibrates at high frequencies to increase its cutting power.
-Vibrospear: A spear roughly as long as Justin is tall, with vibrational technologies built into the tip. The entirety of it is constructed from highly durable metal, enabling its shaft to be used defensively and as a staff weapon.
-Body Armor: Exceptionally lightweight, matte gray body armor. Covers the vital organs in the torso, as well as the non-jointed portions of all limbs with armor. The segments on the torso are composed of carbon-infused steel plate, while the segments on the limbs are composed of carbon ceramic plate. The space between plates is composed of a skintight kevlar/nanofiber weave thick enough to stop the shrapnel that might get between major plates. While reasonably defensive in its own right, the light weight prevents many layers from being incorporated. Magic used by the adherents of Exandra is used to project a protective field a short distance off of every major plate, adding an additional layer of defense before they are worn down and attacks may strike the armor beneath.
-Augmented Reality Glasses, linked to a slim, high-powered laptop. Used to compare scenarios and evidence to archived cases, analyze environments, catalog data, and provide notifications regarding messages and locations in real time.
-Laptop
Possessions/items/property:
-Loft in Angel’s Landing’s middle-class district, contains both a large library (the contents of which are saved to his laptop), his office, and many of his belongings.
-Unmodified motorcycle, sufficient for rapid transit.
Skills: Justin, as required by his line of work, is highly observant. It actually is this fact that gives him his somewhat absent minded demeanor; with the exception of when he is focusing on something specifically, he is generally trying to take in as much information about his surroundings as possible at the same time. When focused, he can pick up on details that would elude all but the most trained eye. His deductive reasoning skills are excellent as well, augmented by his repository of reference materials.
His skills in combat and magic are nothing to scoff at, either. Though not the most physically powerful, he is adept at both long and mid range combat. Once things close to hand to hand, however, things tend to get dicey. Melee and ranged are more his forte. Given how many species could overpower him with natural strength alone, he tends to rely more on wit and maneuverability to win the day if it comes down to a fight.
Magically, he does best with Conjuration and Abjuration magics, as well as those he channels from Exandra. Though he has some degree of skill in other types, their uses are limited for him. He is constantly trying to widen his repertoire, but doing so is relatively slow going when trying to self-teach out of a book.
Misc: Nothing as of yet.
