The heroes were soon at the Lavaridge Gym. "Who wants to take on Flannery first?" asked Shiranui.

"You can go first." Liam offered.

[James Davy]

"Lance, what do you think?" Shiranui asked.

[pkken]

"You should go first, I wanna see flannerys battle style" Lance said

[James Davy]

Shiranui nodded and was soon about about to start facing Flannery in battle.

"This match will be a 3-on-3 single battle with no time limit," the official stated, "Only the challenger can switch Pokémon. Begin!"
"Slugma, go!"
Shiranui scanned Slugma with his Pokédex. "Slugma, the Lava Pokémon. Slugma does not have any blood in its body. Instead, intensely hot magma circulates throughout this Pokémon's body, carrying essential nutrients and oxygen to its organs."
"Electrike, I choose you!" Flannery sent her Slugma out and Shiranui responded with his Electrike.
"Begin!"
"Slugma, Light Screen!"
"Electrike, Electro Ball!" Electrike sprung into action and created an orb of high-current electricity. The orb was launched and Slugma was electrocuted into a one-hit knockout.

"Impressive strategy taking advantage of Slugma's speed," Flannery commented, "Try this one on for size. Go Numel!"
"Electrike, return; Hoshi, I choose you!" Flannery switched the downed Slugma for her Numel and Shiranui switched Electrike for his Staryu.
"Numel, Sunny Day!"
"Hoshi, Scald!" The Staryu pointed its uppermost limb at Numel and blasted out some boiling hot water, inundating Numel. It took a full minute of waiting for the damage to set in and Numel fainted.

"I expected you to use a Water type at some point in our battle. Torkoal, go!"
Shiranui scanned Torkoal with his Pokédex. "Torkoal, the Coal Pokémon. Torkoal generates energy by burning coal. It grows weaker as the fire dies down. When it is preparing for battle, this Pokémon burns more coal."
"Hoshi, return; Electrike, I choose you!" Flannery switched Numel out and sent in Torkoal and Shiranui switched his Staryu out for his Electrike. What came out was still glowing with a bright white light. Shiranui was overjoyed that Electrike was evolving. Electrike grew in size and the glow subsided to reveal a Manectric.
"Manectric, the Discharge Pokémon and the evolved form of Electrike. Manectric is constantly discharging electricity from its mane. The sparks sometimes ignite forest fires. When it enters a battle, this Pokémon creates thunderclouds."
"Torkoal, Overheat!"
"Manectric, Electro Ball! Mega Ring activate!" Shiranui activated the keystone on his Mega Ring and the Manectite that was worn as a collar started glowing as well. An orb of energy surrounded Manectric and shattered to reveal what looked like a lightning bolt in canine form. Mega Manectric conjured an orb of electricity from her mane that was even more powerful and launched it at Torkoal. Torkoal was electrocuted into a one-hit knockout thanks to the large disparity in their Speed stats.

"You've shown excellent skills in battle and for that, I award you the Heat Badge," Flannery congratulated.
"Thanks Flannery," replied Shiranui, adding the Heat Badge to his collection. He noted to himself to give Manectric a grooming and talk with Hoshi about evolution.

Liam went next. Marshtomp came out first. Flannery sent out Slugma. Marshtomp used Water Gun and scored a critical hit, KO'ing SLugma. Number went out next. Marshtomp used Muddy Water and defeated Numel due to a 4x's weakness. Marshtomp evolved into Swampert. She next called out a Torkoal. Liam recalled Swampert. Blissey came out in Swampert's place.
"Blissey, Metronome!" Metronome turned into Thunderbolt. Torkoal received the shock and used Overheat. Blissey was hit with the fire attack, and was not happy.
"Doubleslap!" Blissey gave Torkoal five good, hard slaps. Flannery ordered a Lava Plume. Liam called for an Egg Bomb. The egg went soaring and landed on top of the lava flow, resulting in an explosive double knockout. Since Flannery had lost three Pokémon, and Liam had only lost one, he won a Heat Badge.

Lance stepped up next and smirked, "let's go ludicolo" Lance said, ludicolo was thrilled to battle. "This is our first gym battle so let's get this win" flannerys sent out slugma, "water gun" Lance said, ludicolo cocked his head back shooting a powerful stream knocking slugma, easily making slugma faint.

"That's a nice ludicolo" flannerys said recalling slugma and sending out numel. Lance kept ludicolo in planning on completing a full sweep, "numel use ember" flannery ordered, numel shot at ludicolo. "rain dance" Lance said opening an umbrella, as it started raining. Ludocolo let out an eery smile as he started glowing in power. Swift swim activated, "water gun, point blank" ludicolo disappears moving around extremely fast, next appearing in front of numel. Firing a shot at numel knocking the Pokemon back koing it, "nice tactic but Let's see what you do against Torkoal, she sent out Torkoal, Ludicolo was still on the battle field, "Torkoal sunny day" flannery said, the rain disappeared and dried up the gym, Lance put away his umbrella. "Watch out ludicolo here fire attacks gained a boost. "Torkoal lava plume" as the ground began erupting ludicolo jumped into air. "Flame thrower" ludicolo was hit with a point blank flamethrower falling to the ground, his water type affinity prevented him from suffering super effective damage. "Ludicolo water gun again" Lance said ludicolo shot a stream of water, Torkoal countered it with a flame thrower making a think cloud of steam. "Rain dance then water gun" ludicolo began dancing and rain started pouring, the steam subsided from the rain dance, clearing the battle field up. "Put everything you got into this" ludicolo jumped into the air, clenched his fists, and cocked his head blast letting out a powerful stream of water at Torkoal knocking him into the gym wall, a super effective critical hit. Ludicolo hit the floor smiling, "our training paid off ludicolo" lance said high fiveing his Pokemon. He then collected his badge returning to his friends.

"I believe by now our Pokémon should be strong enough to face the Petalburg Gym," stated Shiranui.

"Yup, and that is also where the next contest is." Liam stated.

"Yeah, shall we heal our Pokemon and get going?" Lance asked

"Lets." Liam said.

Lance goes over to the Pokemon center healing ludicolo, after ludicolo is healed he rubs the pokemons back massaging him. After fighting 3 back to back battles at the gym it must be strenuous on ludicolo.

Liam began planning his next appeal.

While Shiranui's Pokémon were healed, he had been planning his next appeal as well.

"Are we ready to move on?" Liam inquired.

"Ready" Lance said returning ludicolo to his pokeball.

"Before we leave, I need to address the Donphan in the room. How shall we get to Petalburg City?" asked Shiranui, "If we trek there the easiest way would be to go south from Mauville City, turn west to Route 103 and go past Oldale Town to Petalburg City. We can also fly there or we can get a psychic to teleport us there."

"Teleportation might be easiest." Liam stated. Outside the center, Spoink, who had been watching the heroes' gym battles was starting to freak and made the window rattle before falling off the ledge before any of the heroes, who, as a side note were currently were the only humans in the center besides Joy had time to see it.
"Did you hear something?" Liam inquired.

"I heard it," answered Shiranui, "I think you have another follower."

"How do you know it's for me? It might be for one of you guys." Liam stated. He walked over and opened the window. He leaned out and pulled the dizzy Spoink inside and bounced it on the floor until it regained consciousness and could bounce by itself.
