Meanwhile, the dwarves had formulated a plan to steal real weapons from the armoury, and Thorin was pulling blades and spears from the wall, he handed an armful to Kili and looked at his nephew in concern. "Are you sure you're alright?"
"I'm fine, I can manage." Kili insisted, though when he got to the stairs, his leg gave way struggling under the weight of all the heavy weapons, and he fell, the weapons crashing down the staircase with him and making a loud noise.

This alerted the guards to the dwarves being there and they quickly cornered them and took them into custody. "Freeze!"

After being captured, the dwarves were forcefully brought before the Master. "What is the meaning of this?!", the Master demanded in annoyance. Maleficent pushed her way through the crowd, and stood at the corner of the crowd of people, next to the house of the Master. Perfect to be in the company eyesight. "We caught ’em stealing weapons, Sire", Braga, the cheif of the guard, reported. Now the fae was dissapointed at them, especially at the twins. She breathed deeply through her nose as she tensed at the report, shaking her head in dissapproval. "Ah! Enemies of the state, huh?" "A desperate bunch of mercenaries, if ever there was, Sire", the man named Alfrid spoke up to the Master.

"And what have you got to say for yourselves?" the Master demanded.
"Hold your tongue!" Dwalin snarled as he stepped forward. "You do not know to whom you speak! This is Thorin, son of Thrain, son of Thror!"
There were several gasps and murmurs from the crowd around them as they gawked at Thorin in surprise, who nodded his head and stepped closer to the Master too.
"We are the dwarves of Erebor, and we have come to reclaim our homeland." he declared loudly and confidently.

Upon hearing this revelation, the townspeople began murmuring amongst themselves. "I remember this town in the great days of old. Fleets of boats lay at harbor, filled with silks and fine gems. This was no forsaken town on a lake. This was the center of all trade in the north!", he shouted for all to hear before turning to face the people, who were gathered around them. "I would see those days return. I would relight the great forges of the dwarves and send wealth and riches flowing once more from the halls of Erebor!", the crowd was cheering now, and Maleficent wasn't liking it. Even if she knew that Kili and Fili were following their uncle, it was not going to end well for the townspeople, and clearly, Thorin wasn't in his right mind at the moment. She could sense it.

"Death!", Bard's voice shouted from amongst the crowd as he made his way towards Thorin. "That is what you’ll bring upon us: dragonfire and ruin. If you awaken that beast, it will destroy us all", he tried to warn the dwarf Prince, but he seems to be unphased. "You can listen to this naysayer, but I promise you this; if we succeed, all will share in the wealth of the mountain", the crowd looked pleased to hear this. "You will have enough gold to rebuild Esgaroth ten times over!", cheering was then heard. "All of you! Listen to me, you must listen! Have you forgotten what happened to Dale? Have you forgotten those who died in the firestorm? And for what purpose? The blind ambition of a Mountain King, so riven by greed, he could not see beyond his own desire!", Bard sternly told the people of Laketown, wanting them to see te true picture of Thorin's plan.

"Let's not, any of us," the Master rose his voice to shout over everyone's clamouring, waving his hand to get their attention, "be too quick to lay blame! Did you forget that it was Girion, the Lord of Dale, your ancestor, that failed to kill the beast, hm?!" he sneered at Bard.

Thorin glared across at Bard and walked right past him to look at the Master. "I speak to the Master of the Men of the Lake! Would you see the rich days of Esgaroth return? What say you?"
"I say unto you," there was a long pause and for a moment Thorin panicked that they would say no, but he let out a relieved breath when the Master yelled for everyone to hear, throwing his arms out in a welcoming gesture, "welcome, welcome and thrice welcome!"

"You have no right, to enter that mountain!" snarled Bard angrily at Thorin, who just stared back at him seriously.
"I have the only right." the dwarf prince growled.

Maleficent, in the distance, in front of the crowd, was devastated at hearing this. This wasn't right, and even she knew about that. That mountain will become Thorin's undoing, as well as the horrid fate for Laketown. Taking one long glance at the twins, she looked down and shook her head in devastation before walking off into the crowd.

The next morning, as the company was getting ready to leave for the Lonely Mountain on a barge, they had the weapons provided as they loaded supplies along with armor.

Maleficent wasn't going; for the sake of the townspeople, she wasn't going. She would rather die with them, rather than see it crumble from a mountaintop. For the twins, why was there no shame within them for see it happen. This wasn't how she wanted it to be. Not for her, not for them. For her to believe that this will be her last glance to see them, she sat about a foot away from them on a step of the pier, and watched them with sadness and hurt.

"You do know we’re one short? Where’s Bofur?", Bilbo asked when he noticed that there was one missing. "If he’s not here, we leave him behind", Thorin told him. He seemed to be in a rush, and who could blame him? "If we’re to find the door before nightfall, we can risk no more delays", Balin said to the Hobbit for a matter of reason.

Thorin stuck his arm out to stop Kili from boarding the boat as well.
"Not you. We must travel at speed, you will slow us down." he said firmly.
"No...I'm coming with you!" Kili protested in disbelief. "I'm going to be there when the door is opened, when we first look upon the halls of our fathers, Thorin..." he got more and more desperate as Thorin just shook his head.

"Kili, stay here and rest, join us when you're healed."
"Uncle, don't do this!" Fili jumped to his brother's defense. "We grew up on the tales of the Mountain, tales you told us, you can't take that away from him!"
Thorin sighed and looked at the blonde twin in exasperation. "I cannot risk the fate of this quest for one dwarf, not even my own kin. One day you will be king and then you will understand." he said.
Fili narrowed his eyes at Thorin and went to get out of the boat to stand with his twin, but Thorin grabbed his arm to stop him. "Fili, don't be a fool. You belong with the company." the dwarf prince growled.
Fili wrenched his arm free and stepped back onto the dock. "I belong with my brother." he said firmly.

Maleficent looked up from her devastating period when she heard an argument amongst Thorin and the twins. To top it off, Kili looked saddened. What was going on? What did Thorin say to them? As usual, curiousity killed her and she managed to stand from where she was upon the dock. "I’ll stay with the lad. My duty lies with the wounded", she heard Oin say as he walked off the barge and joins Kili and his brother upon the dock. The trumpets began to announce the Master as he steps onto a platform and the crowd cheers.

Back in the Masters house, Bofur is passed out drunk under a table when he hears the trumpet. "By my beard, is that the time!?", he shouted with slurred speech before he rises until banging his head on the table. He then rushes out to join the dwarves on the dock. "Wait!"

"Go now with our good will. And may your return bring fortune to all!", the Master announces before the crowd cheers with the company setting off on the barge down the lake. At the same time, Bofur pushes through the crowd, but when he reaches the dock, he sees the rest of the company has left, and is too far down the lake for him to reach.

While this was happening, Maleficent approached the remaining dwarves and placed a hand upon Kili's shoulder, again, soothing him from his despair.

"I can't believe he would just leave us like that!" Fili growled angrily. Bofur looked to the side hearing Fili's voice and smiled.
"Oh, did you all miss the boat as well?" he asked. Just then Kili groaned loudly and fell down again, his leg now too weak to support his weight.

Meanwhile the other dwarves steered the boat up the river towards the Mountain.

"Kili?", Maleficent saw him fall from unbalanced weight, and he did almost look like he was going to pass out. Managing to catch him, she held him as if he was a child, cradling him. Moving his ebony black hair from his face, he was in pain, she thought. "Come on", she told the others as she held Kili in her arms, carrying him closely against her chest. Her motherly instincts were kicking in now.

"Wh-What do we do?!" Fili asked worriedly as he practically ran to keep up with the fae. He was clearly very concerned for his brother.

The fae went to the bargemen's house, knowing that his place was best for sanctuary. As Bard opens the door, he was not pleased. "Please, Bard, we need sanctuary", the fae was now begging. "No. I’m done with dwarves, go away!", he was about to close the door, but she stopped it with one hand. "Bard! Kili needs help, and this is the best place to do it. There's nowhere for us to go", she heard whimpering in pain, and she held him close, giving him a sign that she was there.

Meanwhile, at the Lonely Mountain, the company searches for the hidden door. "Anything?" "Nothing!", Thorin was now looking at the map. "If the map is true, the hidden door lies directly above us", Bilbo then finds a large carving of the previous king on the side of the mountain. "Up here!", he shouted to them. "You have keen eyes, Master Baggins", Thorin told him, relieved and astonished.

Groaning a little to himself, Bard couldn't turn the obviously injured dwarf and his distressed companions away so he let them in. Sigrid and Tilda quickly cleared their dinner table so Maleficent could lay the dwarf down, using some sacks of nuts for pillows for Kili to rest his head on.
"I need herbs, something to bring down his fever!" Oin called to Bard who frantically searched through what he had.
"I have nightshade...feverfew..."
"They're no good to me, do you have any kingsfoil?"

Together, the dwarves climbed up the staircase and stood on the rocky outcrop, looking at the face of the mountain before them.
"Right then," Dwalin grinned in glee, "we have a key. Which means that somewhere...there is a key hole." he repeated, as he laid his hands on the stone, looking for the keyhole.

"No, it’s a weed. We feed it to the pigs", Bard explained while he frantically searched for other medicine. "Pigs?", Bofur then gets an idea. "Don’t move", he told to Kili, which Maleficent didn't really think it was necessary. She knew how to heal, thanks to her mother, but she wasn't sure if she could do it. She wasn't good at it either, and sometimes, it becomes a disaster. But this was her godson in need; she needed to do this. For him and his brother. She just needed them to believe in her, or at least give her some faith. The fae was so conflicted at the moment, she collapsed to her knees. "He needs elvish medicine", she softly confessed. "I can't do this. I'm not good enough"

Looking at the setting sun, Thorin was convinced that they were on time. "The last light of Durin’s Day, will shine upon the keyhole", he looks over to the sun light shining on the mountain’s wall, but they couldn't find the keyhole. "Nori", he told him. Nori goes over to the wall, and places a glass against it, using a spoon to tap against the wall, in order to see if he can hear where the hidden door is.

"If we don't do something he won't be able to walk again!" Fili protested frantically. "Or worse, he could die!" it was quite unlikely since there was no poison in the arrow but Fili wasn't all that knowledgable in those things so he didn't know any better and he was worried about losing his brother.

"It's not here!" shouted Dwalin in frustration as he began to bang against the wall with his fists and shoulder. "It's.Not.HERE!"
"Be quiet!" Nori snapped at him as he tried to keep tapping with the spoon but Dwalin was making it very difficult for him to hear the echoes back. "I can't hear with all yer thumpin'!"

"Don't you get what I'm saying!? He needs elvish medicine! I am an elf; for that kind of healing, I'm under that", the fae confessed loudly for him to hear, but she immediately regretted for using that kind of voice on her family. She manages to stand and looks down at the pain-stricken Kili with sad eyes.

"Break it down!", Thorin was beginning to panic, and the sun was going back down fast. The dwarves started using their weapons to hit against the mountain wall frantically, before they lost the sun light completely. "Come on!", they continued to hit the wall with their weapons, but to no avail.

"Then do something! Don't just sit there!!" Fili shouted back at her, even more frustrated.

Frantically, Dwalin and Nori began smashing at the rock wall with their weapons, but all it did was break the weapons.
"It's no good, the door's sealed!" shouted Balin in frustration. "It cannot be opened by force, there's a powerful magic on it!"
The light had by now almost fully faded.
"The last light..." Thorin repeated frantically as he turned numbly to look at Balin. "Th-That's what it said...what did we miss...Balin..."

Maleficent was looking around, and she moved herself to see Kili's wound on his leg by moving the binding out of the way. As soon as she did, she felt the young dwarf jolt in pain, not to mention that he was almost screaming. Where is the Kingsfoil? It was a nasty wound to see, about two inches. She had to at least draw down the pain a little before it got worse, something to delay for the Kingsfoil to come. Taking some of the feverfew, she worked quickly by putting it in water. "Hold him down", she told the other dwarves.

"We’ve lost the light. There’s no more to be done. We had but one chance. Come away, lads. It’s over", Balin told his comrades as they all began to walk away, dejected for their task to fail.

Fili nodded and firmly placed his hands on his brother's shoulders to restrain him. Even Bard's daughters, Sigrid and Tilda came forward to help.
Meanwhile Bofur had snatched the last bit of athelas from the mouth of one of the pigs, but he was completely unawares of the Orcs stalking along the rooftops, looking for the dwarves.

Silent and dejected, Thorin tipped his palm horizontally and let the key fall to the ground, leaving with the rest of them.
"Wait!" Bilbo protested, trying to get them to stay. "You can't give up now!"

"Menno o nin na honnen hon i eliad annen annin, hon leitho o ngurth", Maleficent chanted while putting the feverfew upon his leg, pressing it there tightly. She felt Kili jolt, but she had to do this for him, and she repeated as the fae desperately recited the chant with her eyes closed. She opened her eyes as she looked down at the young dwarf, watching him.

As the others were leaving, Bilbo stands by the mountain wall, alone. "Stand by the grey stone. When the thrush knocks, and the setting sun. And the last light of Durin’s Day will shine", he turns from the wall while pacing. "The last light. The last light", he looks up and suddenly the moon appears from behind the clouds in the sky. He looks back at the wall and sees a thrush trying to crack open a snail, rapping it against the wall, then the moonlight hits the wall. "The last light!", he joyfully recalls.
