Sigrid left the others holding Kili down as she heard a noise outside. She thought it was Bard or Bofur coming back. "Da? Is that you?" she called, though she screamed as suddenly an Orc appeared there, blade swinging towards her, and slammed the door shut on it, though the Orc only pushed it open again.
Shouting out loud, Oin picked up an empty bowl from the table where Bard had scattered the herbs and threw it at the Orc, having no other weapons to use. Bane quickly rushed to help him so that Fili, Tilda and Sigrid could stay near Maleficent and Kili.

The wall suddenly then revealed a keyhole shaped dent in the stone, and Bilbo gawked at it in amazement, pointing to himself before he suddenly yelled as loud as he could. "THE KEYHOLE! Come back!! It's the light of the moon, the last moon of autumn!" frantically the halfling began to search for the key on the ground, though he couldn't see it anywhere. He shuffled his feet in agitation as he looked. "The key, where's the key..?!" he heard a loud clink and his heart sank as he watched the key bounce towards the edge of the overhang, though it was then that Thorin suddenly reappeared, his boot stepping on the string and stopping the key. The other dwarves weren't far behind him.

With Fili joining in to fight them off, Maleficent shielded Kili with her dagger coming into play as she clawed an orc in the face with her sharp finger cuffs. Outside, Bofur is attacked by an Orc, and just as he’s about to be killed, an arrow is shot from the back into the Orc.

Thorin begins to insert the key into the keyhole within the mountain wall, and unlocks it. Pushing it open, the company stares at it in awe for a moment. "Erebor", he gasped as he looked what just presented itself before he steps further inside. "I know these walls. These halls. This stone", he touches the stone wall as he walks further inside. "You remember it, Balin. Chambers filled with golden light" "I remember"

Sigrid and Tilda had ducked underneath a table, which Fili had turned over. "Stay down!" he told the girls, tackling another one of the Orcs as Tauriel appeared through the window to join in the fight.
Kili groaned loudly in pain, the wound stinging even more now with the feverfew herbs on it.
"You alright?" Mel asked Bofur, helping the dwarf to stand.
"...Fine, fine." Bofur nodded, a little confused as to why an elf would be here or help them.

Bilbo stared around him in awe, noticing a carving above the doorway. "And what's that?" he asked, pointing.
"The throne of the King." answered Balin.
"And above it?" Bilbo added.
"The Arkenstone."

Legolas appears through the door, and began using his daggers to kill off the orcs, who were attacking the children. To get out of the ensuing chaos, Maleficent quickly and carefully moved Kili off the table, and to the bed nearby. An orc was about to hit her from behind, but she was quick to turn around and fend it off, to keep it away from the injured Kili. However, one of them manages to escape. "Oakenshield has gone!", he told Bolg in Black Speech, who was nearby. "Fall back! Regroup at the bridge!", the leader ordered as the orc pack retreats. "You killed them all", Bain gasped in astonishment. "There are others. Tauriel, come", he said to his comrade before beginning to leave.

"The Arkenstone. And what’s that?", the hobbit asked them, a little curious now. "That, Master Burglar, is why you are here", Thorin told Bilbo from behind while the dwarves look upon him; he suddenly realized the task ahead of him.

Tauriel hesitated slightly, then hurried after him. "What about your cousin?!"

"Why are you here?" Bofur asked Mel warily as he tried to dodge around the she-elf.
"To help." Mel answered.
"If you wanted to help you'd get out of my way." protested Bofur. "I have to get back to Kili! He's wounded!"
"I know, and it's my fault. I'm sorry, let me come back with you. There will be more Orcs. I can fend them off." Mel offered. "They are after your leader, Oakenshield."

Balin walked with Bilbo to the beginning of the tunnel that led down into the main hall where the dragon was sleeping.
"So let me get this right, you want me to find a jewel?" the hobbit looked at him.
"A large, white jewel, yes." Balin clarified.
"Well, is...is that it?" Bilbo frowned. "I mean, I imagine there's plenty of those down there." he pointed down the tunnel as he said it.
"There is only one Arkenstone." Balin insisted. "And you'll know it when you see it."

Kili was moaning in pain as Maleficent killed the last orc that was alive. "We’re losing him!", Oin told the fae as she sheathed her dagger. In time, she finds Bofur arriving just in time with the Kingsfoil. The fae gasps in astonishment and relief as she takes it from him. "Athelas", she looks back at Kili before looking at the plant. This was the time to finally help, but she wasn't sure if she could do it right. She hesitated.

Legolas didn't have time to answer as they were chasing after the Orcs through Laketown, and kills a few during the pursuit.

"Right", the hobbit followed him before they stopped halfway down the steps. "In truth, lad. I do not know what you will find down there. You needn’t go if you don’t want to. There’s no dishonor in turning back", Balin reassured Bilbo as there was slight fear being apparent. "No. Balin, I promised I would do this. And I think I must try", Bilbo sounded determined, which made Balin chuckle. "It never ceases to amaze me"

Tauriel sighed and shook her head as she raced after him, shooting down a few of the Orcs herself. She slowed her pace as she looked ahead and saw most of the Orcs riding away out of the town on Wargs. "Legolas!" she called ahead to him, trying to warn him. Bolg and two other Orcs had stayed behind, presumably to delay the two pursuing elves while the other Orcs got away.

Mel hadn't been far behind Bofur and she looked at Maleficent urgently. "Well, what are you waiting for Saeril? If you don't help him he could lose that leg for good!"

Bilbo turned back as the dwarf laughing confused him.
"What does?" he asked.
"The courage of hobbits." Balin answered as he nodded and smiled. He then turned and began to walk back to the others, though he stopped as he remembered something again and turned to look over his head. "Oh and...Bilbo. If there is...in fact, a live dragon...down there, don't awaken it." he advised seriously.

Maleficent looked at Mel, then at Kili, then at the Kingsfoil. "Help me. Hold him down, this will hurt", she finally said after she took a deep breath. She was desperate to see him well again, and she will not lose him at this time. Taking the Kingsfoil in some water, the other dwarves moved the squirming Kili back onto the table. Removing the feverfew, she pressed the weed against his leg, applying pressure to it. "Menno o nin na honnen hon i eliad annen annin, hon leitho o ngurth", Maleficent chanted after a breath as she repeated the same thing with desperation in her voice. She looked down at the young dwarf, watching him, as she recited the chant. "Menno o nin na honnen hon i eliad annen annin, hon leitho o ngurth"

As the two elves turned a corner, Legolas stopped Tauriel with a gentle hold of her arm as he noticed the orc in the distance before them. Taking Orcist in his grasp, he twirled it and put it in defense stance.

As Bilbo walked down the steps, he heard Balin's warning and once he turned around, the old dwarf was gone from the stairs.

Mel nodded and put her hands on Kili's shoulders firmly, restraining the dwarf when he yelled out painfully and thrashed around. "Stay...still...!" she growled through her teeth at him, "Stay still! It'll be over soon."

Tauriel stopped when she felt Legolas' hand on her arm and looked ahead to see the Orcs too. Narrowing her eyes, she nodded at him and drew her daggers, lunging forward when they were within striking distance.

The chamber was eerily silent as the hobbit reached the bottom of the stairs, and he wondered if there even was a dragon down here. Surely, he would hear it if there was? A beast that large had to make a lot of noise. Foolishly, without thinking, he knocked on the side of the wall, whispering. "....Hello?" as he tried to peer forward and see if he could see anything that would alert him to the Fyredrake's presence.

Maleficent sighed after she stopped her chant. "He must rest now", she said to the surrounding individuals before she retrieved a wrapping bandage for the cut on Kili's leg. "Thank you for the help", the fae said to Mel as she began wrapping her godson's leg.

As they crept closer to the orc, two other orcs sprung out in front of them. Legolas managed to stab the one while letting Tauriel take the other.

Bilbo goes to knock on the wall, but he stops and looks around for a moment before continuing to walk further inside. "He’s not at home. Not at home. Good. Good, good, good", he was relieved for a moment as he looks upon the sea of gold. Walking down quietly through it, he starts looking through a pile of gold for the Arkenstone.

Mel nodded slightly in response, releasing her grip on Kili's shoulders once the dwarf had stopped struggling.
"That...that light..." the dark-haired dwarf asked groggily as he tried to sit up to look at Maleficent "..what was it..?"

Tauriel leapt backwards to avoid the slash of the Orc's blade and drove her dagger into it's neck, turning abruptly to look for Bolg. "We can't let him get away!"

Bilbo began to sift through the various clear and pale white gemstones that he found as he looked through the treasure hoarde. Picking up a particularly large one, he tossed it aside angrily when it didn't match what the dwarves had said on closer inspection. When the stone clattered loudly against some of the other gold, he jumped and hissed frantically at it, as if it would help keep it quiet.
"Shush..Shush, shush!!"

The fae noticed Kili stirring as she finished dressing his wound, but she had to lightly and gently lay him back down onto the table. "Lie still", she told him before removing the Kingsfoil from the table and getting rid of it. "Whatever light do you mean?", she asked him after hearing him. She didn't know what he saw, but she wanted to know what it was. Moving back to the table again, back to his side, she looked down at him.

Legolas took his run, and jumped at the orc with Orcist. Proceeding to stab him, it became apparent that he missed his mark, resulting Bolg to throw the elf Prince into a pillar.

As he looks around, there was too much to go through in the sea of gold. "Arkenstone. Arkenstone. A large, white jewel", Bilbo mumbled to himself as he looked at the piles and piles of gold. "Very helpful", he walks through the mountain of treasure, and as he picks up a gold cup, it releases a pile of gold to slide down, which reveals the eye of Smaug as he sleeps under the gold.

"That white light..." Kili frowned in confusion, repeating what he had said before. "There was a white light, around you...you were...glowing."
"Shh, you just need rest." Mel said to him gently. "He's probably just seeing things." she mumbled, running a hand awkwardly through her hair. "Look, I'm sorry for hurting him...I didn't mean to hurt him, I was trying to help. That Orc was going to hit him with an arrow, and they've been known to poison the shafts, I was trying to shoot past him to deflect the other arrow, I didn't think it would hit him."

"Legolas!" Tauriel called out and tried to go to his aid, but two more Orcs jumped out at her and blocked her path, forcing her to battle with them instead.

Bilbo's face paled as he suddenly realised how close he was to the dragon, quickly setting the cup down and trying to crouch down so he would be less noticeable, or at least he hoped...The hobbit grimaced as the dragon rumbled loudly, and more gold slid down towards him as the dragon moved in his sleep.

Maleficent paused in her tidying when she heard Mel confess about the source of Kili's injury. "It was you?", she asked aloud, until she pondered. "I did try to stop that arrow, but apparently, I thought that the Morgul arrow actually hit him. I was ashamed, guilty, for not protecting him", she softly admitted before looking back at Kili. "At least it was just a regular arrow, and not something more", she exhaled before looking at Mel. "He and his brother opened my eyes for the first time. All my life, I didn't feel ready to watch children, not in personal. Their mother trusted me, and she gave me her blessing to watch her two boys. But I fled when they were just babies", Maleficent shook her head. "Since then, I regreted it; leaving them", she watched Kili as he rested. "They were the light to my darkness", she carefully let her fingers brush against the young dwarf's hand, holding it lightly.

Bolg threw Legolas against another pillar, and restrained him as he was almost about to bite him. Luckily, the elf Prince headbutted him, and made him collide into one of the pillars.

Bilbo tried to quietly sneak past the sleeping Smaug, but the dragon awakens. Quickly, the hobbit uses the ring to turn himself invisible. "Well, thief...", the creature growled as it took a sniff. "I smell you. I hear your breath. I feel your air. Where are you? Where are you?!", Smaug looked around to find the intruder.

A faint smile appeared on the young dwarf's face as he fell into a light sleep, now exhausted from everything that had happened to him.
"Yes, it was me." Mel ducked her head guiltily. "Like I said, I'm sorry; I was only trying to help, it was never my intention to hurt him."

Tauriel ducked to avoid another swipe from one of the orcs, and threw a dagger to try and help Legolas, but her focus was more on the orcs she was fighting and her aim was off, only grazing the large Orc's cheek as the dagger flew past them and imbedded in one of the wooden pillars holding the houses up.

Bilbo quickly ducked behind a stone pillar as well, hoping the dragon definitely wouldn't find him now.
"Come now, don't be shy. Step into the light." the dragon purred as his fiery gaze swept the room in search of this strange smelling intruder. "There is...something about you." the dragon admitted as he snaked his head around, following the allure of this object, that he could feel was in the creature's possession. "Something that you carry...something made of gold. But far more...precious."

"It's okay, I forgive you", Maleficent said to her as she only turned her head halfway while looking at a the corner of her eye. "If it wasn't for you, he would have suffered much worse now", the fae sighed as she turned to face the she-elf. "Thank you", she finally said slowly as she gratefully hugged her. A hug of thanks.

Legolas stumbled a little until he found that Bolg was gone. Following his trail, he leaned himself against a pillar and felt something dripping from his nose. Seeing it on his hand, he tended at the sight of it, already slightly angered. Seeing the Orc retreat on an Warg, he made up his mind. "Tauriel!", he shouted before advancing to a horse.

"There you are, thief in the shadows", Smaug growled after seeing Bilbo, unintentionally reveal himself.

The gesture had surprised Mel and caught her off guard. Elves in general were not used to expressing affection quite so physically and as a result it was rather awkward for her, though she attempted to return the gesture in order to be polite.

Tauriel was not far behind him, stopping to watch the Orc retreating on a Warg. "Are you alright?" she asked him in concern. "What do we do now? Do you plan to follow them?"

"I-I did not come to steal from you, oh Smaug the unaccesibly wealthy!" Bilbo quickly tried to excuse himself, hoping he could appease the dragon with flattery and avoid becoming the Fyredrake's next meal. "I merely wanted to...gaze upon your magnificence, to see if you were as great as the old tales say." the hobbit whimpered fearfully as the dragon growled loudly and stepped around the pillar so that the hobbit was aware of exactly how vast and large Smaug truly was. "I did not believe them!"
"Well, do you now?" the dragon asked as he stood tall and proud before the hobbit.

Maleficent released Mel from her grip, knowing the stiffness coming from her. "Apologies, for being born in Fangorn, our greetings and giving thanks were not common like the rest of our kind", she explained with a nervous smile. "But, really, thank you", placing a hand on her shoulder to replicate the common way of the Elves.

"Just feeling...strange", Legolas admitted to her after he just saw his own blood. "It's not over yet", he replied after they both jumped on the horse, and advanced in the same direction as the orc.

"Truly. The tales and songs fall utterly short of your enormity, oh Smaug, the stupendous", Bilbo stammered as Smaug made a growl with a purr. "Do you think flattery will keep you alive?", he asked the Hobbit. "No. No" "No indeed. You seem familiar with my name. But I don’t remember smelling your kind before. Who are you and where do you come from, may I ask?", the fire-breather took a sniff of the air. As Bilbo goes to answer, he spots, at the corner of his eye, the Arkenstone in the distance.

Mel cleared her throat awkwardly and nodded, placing a hand gently on the fae's shoulders. "My apologies, you simply caught me off guard, Saeril."

Tauriel glanced back over her shoulder at the town as they rode away in pursuit of the escaping Orcs, part of her worried about whether Mel was alright, and she was also concerned about what the other she-elf would do when she realised that they had left her behind.

"I...I come from under the hill." Bilbo answered carefully as he tried to subtly inch towards the stone.
"Under hill?" the dragon questioned, looking partially puzzled but otherwise interested by the riddle-like way in which the hobbit spoke. If there was one other fatal flaw in dragons other than their vanity, it was that they loved riddles.
"And over hills and under hills my path has led, and through the air, I am he who walks unseen." the hobbit was forced to stop moving as the dragon's head lowered towards him, he could smell his breath and he almost choked it was so foul.
"Lovely titles." drawled Smaug. "What else do you claim to be?"

Maleficent smiled small, as she heard Mel's apology. She nodded once before letting go of the other she-elf. Looking back down at her resting godson, the winged elf gave a sigh while watching him sleep before kneeling down slowly and giving a gentle kiss to his forehead. Her life was almost complete now, and having both of the twins in safety.

"Barrel rider", Bilbo answered immediately to the psychopathic creature. "Barrels? Now that is interesting. And what about your little dwarf friends? Where are they hiding?", Smaug asked him with another low growl. Bilbo tries to pretend that he doesn’t understand what the dragon was referring to. "Dw...dwarves? No. No, no. No dwarves here. You’ve got that all wrong" "Oh, I don’t think so, barrel rider. They sent you in here to do their dirty work while they skulk about outside" "Truly, you are mistaken, oh Smaug, chiefest and greatest of calamities"
