Kili quickly drew his bow and shot at one of the Wargs before it could get near Maleficent or his brother, while Thorin cut down the other with Orcrist.
"Warg scouts!" Thorin announced as he pulled his blade free and looked at the others. "Which means an Orc pack isn't far behind!"
"Orc pack?!" Bilbo repeated, looking flabbergasted. Had they not been through enough already with the trolls?!

"Who did you tell about your quest, beyond your kin?", Gandalf demanded of the dwarf Prince. "No one" "Who did you tell?!" "No one, I swear! What in Durin’s name is going on?", Maleficent had guilt in herself; it was her fault to command Azog to attack Moria when she was under the Necromancer's control, but she wasn't the one who actually told him at that time. "You are being hunted", Gandalf exasperated. "We can’t get far. You have no ponies", Maleficent pointed out. "I’ll draw them off" "These are Gundabad wargs. They will outrun you!" "These are Rhosgobel rabbits. I’d like to see them try", Radagast gave a smirk.

Leaving it to Radagast to keep the pack away from them, Gandalf led the group of dwarves across the plains, planning to take them to the secret passageway to Rivendell. There they could get Lord Elrond to read the dwarvish runes on the map and tell them what it said of the hidden doorway.

"Stay with your brother", Maleficent suddenly told Kili as she had an idea to her mind while beginning to walk away from the group. "Where are you off to?", Fili asked her in alarm. She turned her upper body to them. "I am a fae, Fili. I have some pull around here", she winked at him before taking flight, in order for them to have eyes and ears in the air.

Kili seemed a little nervous at the thought of Maleficent leaving their sight but she was gone before he could protest further. The dwarves kept running until suddenly they found themselves trapped behind a rock, with a Warg and its rider perched on the top and sniffing around as if it could smell their scent.

As soon as she was flying above them at a great height, she noticed the orc above them as they hid. With anger flaring in her eyes, she gave a high-piercing screech before she charged. Dive bombing in flight, she violently collided with the orc rider head-on, making the warg tumble down the rock in front of the dwarves. Unfortunately, the squeal of the orc's death caught the attention of the others who were chasing Radagast. "The Dwarf-scum are over there! After them!", Azog ordered to them in Black Speech. "Move! Run!", Gandalf shouted to his dwarven companions. "This way! Quickly!", the fae followed while in flight as she continued to knock some orcs off course during the chase.

The dwarves quickly followed Gandalf, having no other choice unless they wanted to be run down by the Orc pack. The group quickly became trapped between a strange rock formation and the pack that had caught up to them. Gandalf was nowhere to be seen as he had run into the hidden passageway that led to Rivendell.
"There's more coming!" shouted Kili as he spotted even more Wargs running towards the group.
"Where is Gandalf?!" Thorin shouted, not seeing the wizard.
"He's abandoned us!" Dwalin growled as he hefted his weapon, preparing to fight the orc pack to the death.

As the orcs get closer, Gandalf suddenly appears from behind the large rock. "This way, you fools!", he yelled in order to get their attention. "Come on, move! Quickly! All of you!", Thorin shouted while standing near the small hole. One by one, each dwarf jumped, except for Kili. "Kili! Run!", the young prince turns and makes a run for it as the orcs get closer. Wickedly close they were, Maleficent swooped down and picked him up in flight. Flying towards the hole, she picked up Thorin in the process, and they all dropped into the hole.

Kili grunted as he slid down the steep slope and landed at the bottom, dusting himself off as he staggered to his feet. "Th-Thanks..." the young dwarf gasped as he looked up at Maleficent.
The dwarves all froze as a horn sounded above them, followed by hoofbeats and then the sounds of battle.

Thorin and Kili leapt back as an orc rolled down the slope and landed at their feet. Poking it with the end of his axe, the dwarf prince discovered that it was dead. There was an arrow sticking out of its chest, which Thorin pulled out to examine it, his face forming into a scowl.
"Elves." he growled in disgust.

"I cannot see where the pathway leads!" called Dwalin from up ahead where a pathway was. "Do we follow it or no?!"
"Follow it of course!" Thorin shouted back to him.

"I did tell you that I wasn't leaving you behind", the fae told Kili while her wings were folding back in their proper place on her back. "I think that would be wise", Gandalf nodded in confirmation since it was the only way to go that was safe at the moment. Following the path in the tunnel, there was a waterfall with a small city in the distance. "The Valley of Imladris. In the common tongue, it’s known by another name" "Rivendell" Bilbo gaped in astonishment at the great city before them. "Here lies the last homely house, east of the sea" "This was your plan all along, to seek refuge with our enemy", Thorin growled in anger while already feeling betrayed.

"You have no enemies here, Thorin Oakenshield." Gandalf scolded the dwarf sharply. "The only ill will to be found in this valley is that which you bring yourself! We have a map that we cannot read, Lord Elrond can help us to read it! Now, if this is to be successful you shall leave the talking to me or Maleficent as we will need to be tactful and need a small degree of charm, which it seems you dwarves certainly lack in the presence of the Fair Folk."

"I will assist you, Gandalf", Maleficent spoke up, to just break the tension. As they enter Rivendell, they are met by some elves. "Mithrandir", Elrond's right hand man, Lindir, greeted to the wizard. "Ah, Lindir" "We heard you had crossed into the Valley", Lindir spoke in Elvish. "I must speak with Lord Elrond" "My Lord Elrond is not here" "Not here? Where is he?", that was until the hunting horn was heard with the returning elf war party coming towards them. "Close ranks!", Thorin shouted as the elf war party surrounded the dwarves. "Gandalf!", the voice of Lord Elrond sounded as he rode up on his horse. "Lord Elrond, my friend! Where have you been?", Gandalf asked in Elvish. "We’ve been hunting a pack of Orcs that came up from the South. We slew a number near the Hidden Pass", Elrond responded back in the same language while getting off his horse. "Strange for orcs to come so close to our borders. Something or someone has drawn them near", he spoke back in the Common Tongue. "Ah, that may have been us" Elrond's gaze turns to the winged fae. "Saeril", he spoke in astonishment before stopping a few feet in front of the female. Maleficent kept her ground, but slightly bowed her head in respect. "Lord Elrond, call me Maleficent. I would much prefer it", she said to him in the Elvish language in a kind tone. She would much prefer "Maleficent" as her name since "Saeril" was her birth name. "Why do you come?", he spoke back to her in English again. He was clearly suspicious of her since he has heard stories and even witnessed her cause terror on other Elvish kingdoms.

"It is a long story, my friend." Gandalf spoke up to Elrond, quickly coming to Maleficent's defense. "One which we may not have the time for now. At least not at this very moment. We require your aid."

Narrowing his eyes at the female, he then notices to see Thorin stepping up. "Welcome Thorin, son of Thrain" "I do not believe we have met", the dwarf Prince gave a small growl under his voice. "You have your Grandfather’s bearing. I knew Thror when he ruled under the mountain" "Indeed? He made no mention of you" Elrond suddenly says something to Thorin in Elvish. "What is he saying? Does he offer us insult?", Glion spoke with a little bit of anger within him. "No, Master Gloin, he’s offering you food", Gandalf reassured him. That was until the dwarves turn and discuss amongst themselves. "Ah, Well. In that case, lead on"

Later that day, the dwarves all sat around the elves' dining table. Some complaining that the food wasn't of their taste and that they would prefer meat rather than "leaves". "Kind of you to invite us. I’m not really dressed for dinner", Gandalf spoke as he walked with Elrond to the table. "Well, you never are", they seat themselves at the head chair.

Changed into something lighter and more Elvish-like, Maleficent had on an elbow-length off-the-shoulder brown dress that fell to her ankles as she made herself appear at the walkway of the dining area where everyone else was at. There were no shoes on her, and she preferred to walk barefoot, letting the sun warm them. Her headdress was gone, so she let her hair flow free. Noticing what appears to be an elvish flute nearby. She delicately picked it up and lightly played a few notes until she was actually playing a song. It was a song she knew and learned as a child. Till then, she was with the other instrument playing Elves, having her eyes flicking to Kili time to time.

"Change the tune why don't you?" complained Dori eventually as the dwarves began to get tired of the Elven music. "I feel like I'm at a funeral!"
"Can't say I fancy elf-maids myself," Kili was boasting to the other dwarves he sat with, which included his brother, Dwalin, Bofur and Dori. "That one over there's not bad though." the young dwarf grinned suggestively and nodded in the direction of the elf he had meant.
"That's not an elf-maid." Dwalin had smirked at him, and Kili's face turned bright pink as the elf turned around to reveal that, as Dwalin had predicted, it was not a female elf.
"Oh, very funny!" Kili grumbled, mortified with embarrassment.

Elrond was examining one of the swords that Gandalf and Thorin had taken from the trolls’ cave. "This is Orcrist, the Goblin-cleaver. A famous blade, forged by the High Elves of the West. My kin", he explained before delicately giving the sword back to Thorin. "May it serve you well", he says before taking Gandalf’s sword. "And this is Glamdring. The Foe-hammer, sword of the King of Gondolin. These swords were made for the Goblin wars of the First Age. How did you come by these?", he asked the wizard. "We found them in a troll hoard on the Great East road, shortly before we were ambushed by orcs" "And what were you doing on the Great East road?", the lord asked again.

Later that night, Gandalf, Bilbo, Thorin, and Balin met in the Halls privately with Elrond. Thorin showed the lord the map to Erebor. "Erebor? What is your interest in this map?"

"It's purely academic." Gandalf interjected quickly before either of the dwarves could say anything to give away their real intentions for the quest. "As you know, these types of artifacts sometimes contain...hidden text."

Raising his eyebrows, as if he were not entirely convinced it were the truth but had no choice but to believe the wizard's explanation, Elrond walked to the edge of the cliff which the small group stood on, where a crystal like table stood.
"These are Cirth Ithil, Moon Runes. They can only be read by the light of the moon at the same day and time that they were written on."
"Can you read them?" Thorin asked softly, almost holding his breath for fear that it was the wrong time. If they could not find out what those strange runes said they would never find the Hidden Door and retake Erebor from Smaug.
"Fate is smiling on you, Master Oakenshield." answered the elf Lord mildly as he glanced sideways at the dwarves. "The same moon shines upon us tonight."

Elrond places the map on a stone slab right under the moon, and as the moon’s light shines on the map, it reveals the runes. ‘Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last light of Durin’s Day will shine upon the keyhole.’ Elrond reads the runes. "Durin’s Day?" "It is the start of the dwarves new year, when the last moon of Autumn and the first sun of Winter appear in the sky together", Gandalf explained to Bilbo. "This is ill news. Summer is passing, Durin’s Day will soon be upon us", Thorin's voice quickened thinking that it was going to be too late. "We still have time" "Time, for what?" "To find the entrance. We have to be standing at exactly the right spot, at exactly the right time. Then, and only then, can the door be opened" "So this is your purpose, to enter the mountain", Elrond concluded in grim. "What of it?" "There are some who would not deem it wise", the lord answered before giving the map back to Thorin. "Who do you mean?" "You are not the only guardian to stand watch over Middle-earth", he answered as he turned and left.

As the other dwarves settle in for the night, they were cook their own food they brought. Bofur was cooking a sausage until he heard the table Bombur sat on, creak. Having an idea, he throws his sausage at Bombur. "Bombur!" as he catches the sausage, the table underneath him breaks and crashes, making all the dwarves laugh. Maleficent heard the laughter while she was just walking in, gracefully and slowly, into their room. The fire was warm, she could feel, and the summer air was decent.

She stopped at where Kili was seated, since he was on a lounge that was behind Bofur, smoking from his pipe. Gesturing him to move his feet, she allowed herself to sit down with her bare feet curled upon the lounge with him, with just a few feet away. "Nice night", she commented to the stars.

"Mhm." Kili grunted in agreement as he puffed a breath of smoke out of his mouth. "Very nice."

"With or without our help, the dwarves will march on Erebor." Gandalf proclaimed to Elrond as he followed the elf lord along the path. "I do not believe that Thorin Oakenshield thinks he is answerable to anyone. Nor, for that matter, am I." the Grey wizard spoke firmly.
"It is not me you must answer to." Elrond corrected him as they stopped in the place where he usually held meetings. On the balcony stood Lady Galadriel, as she turned to face them, she smiled and spoke softly to the wizard.
"Mithrandir, Gwenwin în únodui (It has been a long time)."

"Have you ever seen, with your own eyes, the Lonely Mountain of Erebor?", the fae asked the young dwarf while her eyes were fixated upon the sky with the summer wind calmly breezing around them. After a moment, her head turned to see Kili.

"Age may have changed me, but not so the lady of Lorien", the wizard slightly joked to the Lady of the Wood, making her smile. "I had no idea Lord Elrond had sent for you" "He didn’t. I did", the voice of Saruman responded behind Gandalf. "You’ve been busy of late, my friend"
