Humanity is at the edge of extinction.

It has been six years since the world fell victim to the infection. It ravaged the planet like a wildfire, turning people into murderous cannibals that wanted nothing more than to kill and eat anything that moved. The infection at first took a day at the most to turn somebody. First you get tired, then a fever, then your coughing up blood. By the end of the day your killing your loved ones. But through a bite, the infection is much quicker. After being bitten you have an hour, maximum. You'll get a horrible fever almost straight away. Your insides will burn and you will quickly develop a lust for blood. The infection turned people against each other, and where the infection hadn't completely destroyed once great countries, the survivors did. Great island nations were the last to fall, Australia and Britain the last beacons of hope in a world gone mad. It has been five years since Britain collapsed, the overwhelming number of desperate migrants attempting to get in couldn't be stopped, and they brought the infection with them. Australia couldn't sustain itself after this, and the country erupted into a brutal civil war. The fighting brought about chaos, and with chaos, the infection. 4 years ago, the last stronghold in the world fell and all cure research was destroyed.

Six years on from the original infection in the year 2022, things have only gotten worse. The infected rule the night and savage raiders rule the day. Food and water is sparse and guns and ammo even more so. Electricity is a thing of the past, and so is Human decency. With things as they are, would you survive our extinction event?

Setting

Our story takes place in Amsterdam. A once great city known for its beautiful canals, amazing scenery and its red light district. Now it is known for nothing. The city was among the first to fall around the globe and most of its 800,000 residents were trapped inside. The water of the canals runs red with blood and the streets are painted the same. Weapons here are hard to find, and ammunition for them even harder. The only thing in abundance here anymore? The infected.

Information

-The infected aren't slow, shuffling zombies. They can run, climb and jump just like we can.
-They have all the senses we do. They can see, smell and hear us.
-At night all of their senses increase. They can see in the dark, sniff you out much better, and have an increased sense of smell. They are also much stronger and more aggressive at night.
-While zombies will kill and eat animals, animals can not and will not turn into zombies.
-Food and water is harder to find now, and while some plumbing systems still work, all water from taps and such is infected. Bottled water and rain water is uninfected.
-Guns and ammo are much rarer now and will be very hard to find. I don't want your character running around with an AK-47, a sniper, an RPG etc. all at the same time. Make it believable. Sure, your character can have an assault rifle, but how would he/she have got it? Is it in good condition? How much ammo do you have? Things like pistols and hunting rifles will be more common.
-Small things can kill. Illnesses that we wouldn't worry about now would be lethal unless treated, small wounds could get infected and kill you. Think about things like that.

Personality: Darren is a no-shit taking, fast talker who can get around most situations either through a smooth tongue or fast feet. If you get close to Darren, he's loyal and honest. But his honesty is brutal. Darren helps out those in trouble but leaves as quick as he comes. He can't get tied down, or his morality as a normal human will make him wind up dead. At least in his opinion. Damien can be quite the cynic but he is also resourceful, having a keen eye for stuff he can find and gets a good ain from it too.

Bio: Darren doesn't like talking about his past, but what he will tell you that he travelled all around Amsterdam, using the rooftops as his streets. When it started, it all changed. Parents, Dead. Sister, Dead. Since then, he's planned to survive ever since.

Past Occupation: Unemployed.

Weapons: AK-47 with three mags in case things get hairy, but he's got his katana for good use.

Inventory: Rope, Bandage, Swiss Army Knife, Duct Tape, Flashlight, Batteries, some food.

Other: Darren knows a lot of parkour and uses this in his advantage to get around the streets quickly. Very much the scout of the group. He's a speedy little bastard. He also never takes off his face wear. Anonymity was important to him, especially if he ran into bandits.

You might want to include occupation, so we knew what everyone did before the outbreak, it would also most likely tell us what they were good at. Inventory may also be handy, for other things other then weapons. It's nice to be able to keep track of things in there, atleast I think so myself. Physical Shape is also something i'd recommend, just so we know what shape others are in.

@BilboTheGreat There are 200,000 legal weapons in The Netherlands, regions with the most weapons are the provinces where hunting is populair, which excludes our starting point for the most part. Then also a lot of those 200,000 legal weapons are owned by members of a shooting range so to speak, they often own multiple weapons. Hence a lot of those weapons would be distributed amongst them.

Then there's also illegal weapons, which is in the 100,000 range by estimates. The most common weapons, would be pistols/revolvers. I am uncertain of the placement of automatic rifles, though i'd place hunting rifles above them in terms of how common they would be. Though the influence of the unknown illegal arms complicates that some what.

Appearance:

Standing at 5'7" with a lithe frame, Maxine has a body of a graceful dancer. Her straight orange locks and bright brown-green eyes are the most prominent features one can recall about her, alongside her pale but freckled skin. Max has very little muscle, her body not suited to fighting zombies and other humans alike. Instead, Maxine prefers to act like a fox, sly and quiet - in and out without a sound. Her dancing background also gives Max the ability to be flexible, allowing her to squeeze into tight corners in case she needs to hide. Maxine also has a tattoo on her wrist, a result of a drunken night out with friends before the whole world-going-to-shit situation.

Maxine prefers to have her hair tied up and out of the way, either in a ponytail or braids of sorts - depending on how much free time she has that particular morning. A light-weight parka and old faded skinny jeans are Maxine's regular outfit, along with worn out converses.

Maxine also speaks with a distinct Scottish accent, an obvious hint to her heritage.

Inventory:

A simple waterproof backpack, stolen during the first few days of the apocalypse years prior. Within it, Maxine carries two bottles of water, along with some stale crackers that she only eats when desperate for food. She also has two shirts, three sets of underwear, one pair of jeans and some shorts and two pairs of socks, along with some extra female hygienic products.

Somewhere hidden in her bag, Maxine also carries two torches, with some spare batteries and a lighter. She also has a thin, ripped blanket that she carries for cold nights.

Weapons-wise, Maxine carries nothing other than a Bowie hunting knife, usually concealed in one of her many parka pockets. She also carries a medical kit; complete with various bandages, painkillers, disinfectant and a scalpel.

In her jacket, she has a crumpled picture of her family which she rarely leaves out of her sight. Maxine considers the picture her most prized possession.

Maxine is kind to a fault. She loves helping people with their problems, often pushing her own to the back of her mind. This trait was her main motivation to study medicine and become a doctor. Maxine is not she, nor is shy quiet (verbally at least) but can act more like a mother figure to those she cares about.

She prefers to keep her secrets to herself, her selfless nature often making her keep quiet about any problems because she doesn't want to burden people. Maxine rarely asks for help, her reasoning being that she 'wants to be independent.'

Her optimistic nature can often make Maxine very gullible. She prides herself on her people-reading skills, but often her judgement is clouded by her optimistic view on life.

Maxine's skills heavily rely on her dancing background. She cannot fight, preferring the sneaky-stealth method to avoid any confrontation. She is light on her feet and flexible so stealth is the best way for her to survive. However, while she prefers to avoid confrontation, it doesn't mean that she hasn't been in any fights, she knows how to use her knife well enough, thanks to her medical background.

Biography:

Growing up in Scotland, Maxine had a very normal childhood. Everything was picture perfect: happy parents, energetic siblings, beautiful house, perfect. She was always encouraged, from a young age, to have a hobby, which Maxine eventually chose dancing - ballet, to be precise.

It wasn't long before Maxine's parents decided to move to Amsterdam. For reasons unknown, Maxine barely questioned it as she was thrust into a new environment. Still, Maxine's perfect life never changed. Gathering many friends, Maxine was soon off to university, studying to become a doctor when the apocalypse began.

Hurrying back home, Maxine found her parents lying in a pool of blood, her older brother hunched over their bodies and her younger brother missing. She never approached him - and for good reason too. After looking at her brother's decayed appearance, the girl barely managed to behead him using scattered kitchen appliances. It was then Maxine decided that once she found her younger brother, they could escape Hell together.

Six years later, she's still looking.

Name: Alex de Fries.

Age: 31 years old.

Appearance:
(The gear he is currently wearing has been stolen from a deceased police officer, since then he pretends to have been an officer himself in order to make people more trustworthy of him. Not only that but people surely expect a former police officer to be able to handle a firearm well, probably better then themselves.)

Physical Shape: In his youth Alex favoured playing soccer with his friends over going to the gym, as the experience was more fun and competitive. As he got older he no longer really had the chance to play soccer and thus shifted his attention at going to the gym, favouring staying in shape and having noticeable muscle tone over actually maintaining and developing a six-pack or more. The Apocalypse has tested his staminia and certainly increased it as well. Fortunately however, cycling everywhere and having regular workouts provided him with the healthy base he needed to be able to survive in this new world.

Sexuality: Hetrosexual.

Personality: Alex can be quite sociable and has no problem engaging in conversation or talking infront of groups, he however enjoys his alone time and often takes a few hours of the day for himself so he can relax and read a good book. History is his passion and it's only fitting that he himself, is old fashioned as well. Because of this he is always the gentlemen, looking out for women more so then he would for a man.

This goes in line with his hesitation to fight a woman, whether that be through words or with physical violence. His attitude to men is much different, he expects any man to take care of himself and he frowns upon men that express their emotions rather then keeping them bottled up inside.

Alex is lucky enough to have an aura of natural charm and a bright smile. He treats everyone nice and with respect, actively listening to whoever is talking to him. Yet if someone annoys him he will be quick to ignore them and should that person find himself in a situation where they need his help, he will simply watch them fail and extreme cases, die.

Background: After the outbreak of the infection in his country first started, the government attempted to set up quarantine zones. The quarantine zones did not manage to hold back the spread for very long and in most cases the quarantine zones were breached within a week. All and all, quarantine control in such a dense country surrounded by other dense countries proved to be rather difficult.

In the early days of the outbreak, Alex stayed in his home town, content on reinforcing and securing his own house. Believing that the government would be able to contain and eliminate the virus and the people that carried it. Soon however, it became evident that this was not the case and that all the larger cities had already degraded into anarchy.

Once it became abundantly clear that The Netherlands was no longer safe, Alex started considering other options such as England, Ireland, Iceland. There were supposed to be safe an free of the virus, yet the transport to England had almost ceased to exist. Airports certainly weren't an option anymore, the only alternative would be crossing by boat. Unfortunately, that would require finding a boat. One in working order too, that wasn't an easy task anymore.

In the end, a lot of time and supplies were wasted on finding a boat, whether it was in working order or not. But by then England had already decended into chaos, it was no longer the safe heaven it once was, or atleast that were the rumours that made it back to The Netherlands. Alex, now discouraged and facing a boat that required repairs to function, simply decided to abandon the boat and his plans to travel to England.

With all safe havens in the world gone, there was nothing left but try and survive in the place he already lived. For the past six years he just been moving from place to place, scavenging what he can and just attempting to find somewhere safe to settle down.

Past Occupation: History professor at a university, and amateur historian.

Inventory: Alex still carries his phone from before the outbreak, savouring the pictures on it but keeping it off for most periods of time, attempting to preserve the battery. He also carries his old wallet, filled with money, small change, his identification, drivers license and various other things that no longer hold any meaning in this world.

Police belt that still holds a pair of handcuffs, keys, a primary flashlight with no more juice in the batteries, secondary flashlight, baton holder without a baton, disposable gloves and mask, taser and a bottle of pepperspray.

The backpack on his back contains two large bottles of water, five variations of canned food, a roll of tinfoil, a half empty bottle of deoderant, a full tube of toothpaste, toothbrush, two journals in which he can write down his thoughts or notes on the infection, a small box of pencils, pencil sharpener, a packet of condoms, razor, shaving cream, three sets of clean underwear, four pairs of socks, two shirts, one jacket, two pairs of blue jeans.

Weapons: Steel pipe with a double tee pipe fitting fastened to it. The double tee has one large steel bolt tightly secured on each end, resembeling a sledgehammer but at the size of a hand held axe and with only a fraction of the weight that an actual sledgehammer would be. The materials required to craft the weapon are easy to find and require little technical knowledge to assemble, which makes it the perfect melee weapon, favouring the ability to knock down and force back enemies over inflicting pure damage like a blade would.

Walther P99Q semi-automatic pistol that has unfortunately suffered a malfunction and despite looking fire ready, is unable to preform. Lack of knowledge and experience on weapon maintenance has prevented its user from fixing the issue. The weapon in its current form can only be used as a last resort melee weapon or to intimidate Humans that do not know about its defective state.

[Shoe Thief]

Name: Hank Miller

Gender: Male

Personality:
Hank is a survivor in basics. He will do what ever need be to survive. If he needed to he would sever one of his own limbs if it meant he would survive. He comes across as a grumpy old man when encountered with people but holds a soft spot children especially. What he doesn't have a soft spot for is people who take from others with out a just cause.

Bio:
Hank grew up as a traveling electrical engineer. Primarily he would do several side jobs to help increase his personal pay. Once the outbreak hit Hank was forced to stop traveling when he made it to Amsterdam. Though work was plentiful as the economy collapsed around him. Once it wasn't Hank started resorting to what ever means necessary to survive. Using his strength, his experience, and what ever he may find of use, he survives. Now he holds up in a small encampment inside a small apartment complex.

Former Occupation: Traveling Electrical Engineer

Personality: Hunter was fairly young when everything went wrong. Or in his case went right. Despite having strong morals about human beings he likes or about people he thinks needs help, he can have a very dark side to him. He would definitely do some pretty... intense things if he was in the situation.

Bio: Hunter was a young teenager when things went wrong. With no idea where to go in life he just lived with his parents outside of Amsterdam. Who in turn once the outbreak hit, went to the city for protection. After the city fell and he lost connection to his parents Hunter lived scavenging anything he could to survive. Using his parents firearms to protect himself he soon became a deadly killer, despite no real combat skill or any real strength. Now he just sleeps where ever seems safe for the night.

Personality: Tessa is a cold, intense, person. She's closed off, and it takes a lot to earn her trust. She's very harsh, critiquing everything she sees. But while she puts on an Ice Queen facade most of the time, when she's among people she trusts, she's a caring person, and while she rarely laughs anymore, sometimes you can see the hint of a smile. She values loyalty above anything else, and sees any form of betrayal as an extreme offense.

Bio: Tessa had been looking forward to a fun filled trip in Europe, researching all the historic places she'd learned of in class. Instead, she found herself fighting for her life. When the virus finally broke out, Tessa and Charlie were separated from their class. They moved from place to place for a few years, but now they've holed themselves up in an old hotel, and Tessa hopes that they might actually be able to stay there.

Personality: Charlie is a good guy. He really is. He cares about his friends, and he's loyal to them, and he'd do anything for them. He tries to find the silver linings in every shitty thing that happens to him and his companion, although there often aren't any. He's extremely resourceful and very smart. He's charismatic and is great at getting people to like him. However, despite his charming qualities, he's wiling to do what ever needs to be done to survive.

Bio: It wasn't supposed to go like this. Charlie had been on a school trip, visiting Amsterdam from America, when the outbreak had hit. He'd been studying history one minute, and the next he was fighting for his life. He and his friend, Tessa, were separated from the rest of the class, and they've been working together to stay alive for the past six years. They're extremely close, and consider each other family. Charlie really just wants to get back to America, and try to find his family, although he doesn't foresee that happening anytime soon.

His main weapon is an old, antique sword that he and Lilly found in an abandoned house. He's kept the weapon in good condition, and it slices through the zombies like butter. Inventory: Charlie's backpack is almost bursting with items. He's got plenty of canned goods, and some other snack foods, as well as a roll of bandages, some rubbing alcohol, a few spare bullets, a picture of his family, a few changes of clothes, and 3 water bottles.

Personality:
Chilled to the point of appearing unresponsive, nothing appears to fluster or stress Henry. Nor does he get excited or worked up about anything much which might lead some to assume he is devoid of emotion. The truth of the matter is that he feels everything shallowly, as if from a distance or as if it were happening to another, and he thus has time to examine and understand his feelings; albeit with a facade that seems false and slow at times.

His neutral expression is a mild smile and there is no wrath or danger in his eyes. At his best he is empathetic and warm, especially with those younger than him or he feels responsible for; even in his worst moods he is not a violent person and would rather avoid conflict than further it.

Bio: Henry followed a fairly normal life in southern England, enjoying good academic grades in a Grammar School which also prided itself on its sports achievements. His education was varied but Henry excelled in subjects such as History, Religious Studies and the knowledge-based sciences of Biology and Chemistry. Lacking a stocky build or significant height, Henry was unable to make much impact on the rugby field (his school's most prestigious sport) and turned to others like Badminton and Hockey.

With his high achievements he was able to attend Exeter University (for personal reasons he chose not to attend Oxford or Cambridge) and studied History and then gained a teaching degree the year after he graduated.

In the end, Henry ended up in Amsterdam on a school trip to visit various historical sites around the city during the initial outbreak. His group were in a museum at the time and were trapped in a single exhibit for the Napoleonic Wars. Henry made it out in an attempt to find help but quickly returned when he realised the extent of the situation; his young charges were nowhere to be found.

Past Occupation: History Teacher (High School/Secondary)

Weapons: A replica of a cavalry sabre (circa 1800) newly whetted from the Amsterdam Museum and matching sheath (plain red leather). Henry may not be great with this but his fencing lessons from university are still fresh enough in his mind and body to be useful, especially against unarmed opponents.

Inventory: A few cans of tinned food, a portable gas cooker (nicknamed 'Pocket Rocket' - it's about half a foot in length and fits onto a gas canister, unfolding to provide a base for a small pan to sit on), a travel tube of shower gel, a 2l bottle of water and a collapsible funnel (to filter water into the canteen he also carries).

Other: The children from his school trip are definitely gone but the trainee teacher (Rhiannon Jones) was nowhere to be found and is never far from Henry's thoughts.
